Adding water to the paint per se is not bad since the paint contains water (from the name itself, water-based 😆). Do you mean not to add more water? She used 10% water, should she have put 5% add instead?
When you said "reduce". I believe you cant use lacquer thinner, or paint thinner to a "water-based" paint.
You can add "Floetrol" to ensure none of brush marks left behind

The wood grain popped up like that because of the water you added into the paint. It caused swelling in the wood. Reduce or don't add the water and then it won't have the grain raise up plus you won't have to apply so many coats. Hope that helps everyone. It turned out beautiful.

She didn't remove original finish and then put 2 coats of shellac on it before painting. Seems unlikely the water would have seep into the grain. The grain was likely already raised from long term exposure to humidity.

👌🏼 another great product that works well is KILZ bonding primer. 25 a gallon but it also repels water and mildew and coats ikea type glossy furniture, plastic, metal. It also makes it so you barely use any paint. Thanks for this! ❤

The degreaser spray and a scuffing pad to start as a “ wet sand “ ( would have taken the same amount of time with a better prepared surface ), wipe it down with a clean damp rag. A can of rust oleum primer and a can of rust oleum topcoat and you would’ve been finished by lunch. The paint would last for 20 years.

I’d rather people buy painted wood furniture than buy cheap shit that was made in a factory that will end up in a landfill in 10 years. You’re right, eventually someone will decide to remove the paint from this piece, and it will still be a perfectly good piece of furniture when they do. If someone went to TJ Maxx or Hobby lobby trying to buy a little side table like this, it would cost them over $100, and it would be made out of shitty press board.

I see your technique : use shellac In Place of sanding ,
Thin the paint to eliminate brush strokes .
Spray topcoat to save time and money.
I think it came out great .
    * note to self: when using a light color over wood and eliminating primer .. don’t thin expensive paint SOOO much. I’m sure it didn’t bug you to do four coats on a small piece , though .
