The weapons in Doom are so afraid of wasting the Doomslayer's time that they reload themselves...

Hell yeah, snake!
METAL MUSIC STARTS PLAYING IN THE BACKROUND
I think the ability of carrying all weapons at the same time is just as important as no reloading. When I saw a gameplay video on YT, the guy used the technique of switching between weapons to reduce the "cooldown" even further. As it turns out, even with guns not needing to reload, there are still lags between two shots, especially for the super shotgun and gause canon. But switching to another weapon is faster than that. So the guy killed a mancubus in about 2 seconds with 4-5 different weapons each shooting once. I tried that technique and it was not only faster, safer, and infinitely more satisfying.
I think my only gripe for the game was not enough variety and brutality for mancubus glory kills. I want something like shoulder tackling right through its belly or pounding its whole meaty body into ground like a hamburger.
Clocker eh?
thanks for the paragraph i'll take it into CONSIDERATION
87you87tube I agree with the Mancubus variety. I think the same applied to the Cacodemon kills.

For some reason im fine with this games exposition and story because listening to Haydens voice is soooo soothing. God its just too good. Im ready for Eternal
It's so calming

THIS!
The story of DOOM 2016 is a beautiful example of how to handle GENERIC THEMES! The story of the game (Up until the reveal of the Night Sentinels and Argent D'Nur) is the epitome of generic as all fuck, but it handled it to such excellence that it's fun to witness, and oh my god the little lore entries are simply masterful; seeing the entries drift towards insanity the higher the access level gets is sublime.
I honestly found Hayden's voice hard to listen to and very grating. Well, at least other people enjoyed it lol

I'm deathly afraid you don't understand why doom guy gave a thumbs up in the lava

did you know that the kickass theme of DOOM 2016 remake was made using a chainsaw and a synthesizer, they'd record the sound of a chainsaw and then stick the audio through a synthesizer, and it sounds badass
That is very impressive and thank you for the newfound knowledge
The theme was made with a 9-string guitar. The chainsaw was used in 'Hellwalker'. Get your facts right
@@lilstjimmy isn't that still the menu theme? you sure you know what he's talkin about? because technically every ost in doom is a theme for the game plus he didn't even mention the specific music
Also there are literally pentagrams in the soundtrack
@@SWY1356 he was referring to the theme, which is "At doom's gate"
The chainsaw isn't "risk vs reward" it's "cost vs gain". That's because the chainsaw is a guaranteed kill, and also it has a lot of range (like berserk).
About the range: I know the chainsaw is a melee weapon, but when you use it you "jump" to the closest enemy in the direction you're looking.
Yeah it feels like "risk vs reward" is just an autopilot term that gets thrown around because people know that it denotes good game design.
Though admittedly there is an aspect of risk vs reward in using glory kills, at least on Nightmare difficulty, since they leave you exposed for a second after you do them.

The glory kill/chainsaw mechanic is my favorite part of Doom 2016. Instead of cowering behind cover or scouring for health packs and ammo all the time, when you're on the ropes, this game tells you to *whip out a chainsaw and charge the biggest monster in the room.* F-ing awesome.
Its far from the truth to say theyre force feeding you plot, its not harmful to let the player chill at the end of a level. 2016 did incredible with the balance of plot and action
I believe the reason why they mad us sit through sam's and olivia's monologs was to make the players not like them that much more.

I thought Doom did a good job telling its story
One of my biggest complaints of games today is that it is mostly one big cutscene and like %20 actual gameplay Like Death Stranding
Despite me loving both Death Stranding and Doom, both are terrible in how far they go with each. Doom doesn't do enough while Death Stranding does too much.
Eh it’s a matter of taste. I like both, but it depends on how I feel day to day.
I really like the way told it's story. It was spot on imho
MrZozue yeah I thought it was the perfect amount of exposition to gameplay ratio. The story made sense and never took too long to explain, and it was actually pretty interesting! Hearing about how the demons think of the doom slayer was really cool

Hello, fellow Splinter Cell fan.
@@anthonykay1580 Hail!👍
As far as plot goes, DOOM actually did it fairly well; in a way it's like the first Star Wars movie, in that it's designed to reel you in and get you engaged. The lore about the Doom Slayer and Hell is really interesting and unique (there's strong evidence that he is indeed the original Doomguy, something that Eternal will without a doubt answer), and subtle/wordless moments like him punching every screen that had that megalomaniac Hayden's voice on it or him saving VEGA from complete atomization really helped define his personality. It's showing without telling.
When it comes to the story and how it's presented to the player, you could do far, far, far, far worse than DOOM...*glares at Death Stranding and The New Colossus*...a whole lot worse.
New Colossus's story was top tier but I agree that Doom did alright
His saving Vega from its self sacrifice spoke volumes about his personality. It showed he has honor, respect, and genuinely values those who place the wellbeing of others above themselves. He could have let Vega die, but he didn't. Doomslayer decided Vega was more valuable then just a tool despite being an AI, he was a comrade in this war. Really, comparing Hayden and Vega tells you so much about the worldless beast that is Doomslayer.
@@thomasallen9974 Yeah exactly. I can't wait for Eternal to explore VEGA and the Doom Slayer's dynamic.
@Cerberus Doom lore is awesome and I can't wait for Eternal to go even more in-depth

Everything you said about the game in this review is on point, though i cant say much about the multiplayer as i only put about 3 or 4 hours into it. Great video.
Honestly, yeah, it can be a little iffy on the graphical side *occasionally* but the gameplay still feels so good. I got it about a week ago, at the time I’m writing this and beat it just yesterday. *doom is the only game where when all the enemy die you aren’t relieved your disappointed there wasn’t more*
There are actually ten possible upgrade points per level, not five.
The one thing that bothered me about this game were the upgrade points hidden in secret areas. If you don't find any secrets, you'll be in an objectively worse position down the road, whereas in the original games secrets were nothing but a small help, since they only contained supplies and maybe early access to one of the weapons. What this means is that some people (like me) end up feeling like they HAVE to find every secret in Doom 2016, unless they want to go around underequipped.
It's not that terrible in practice, but the feeling is there.

Nobody ever mentions that Warhammer 40K: Space Marine had many of the mechanics that DOOM 2016 later perfected. In that game there was no cover system, because Space Marines don't hide, and you got health back by executing enemies, because executing the will of the Emperor is all you need to fuel yourself. I see a lot of that game in DOOM and I find it hard to believe they didn't get at least some inspiration from it.

Just got this game on Switch. My first Doom game and I have next to no experience with FPS games (other than splatoon 2 which isn't an FPS but I have 400+ hours in) and I agree with just about everything you said here. The game is fun as hell and feels great to play even in handheld mode.
I think doom 16's bosses are really underrated, I don't play much old school shooters but I've never seen bosses that rely on careful movement and dodging like the ones in doom do, its almost like a character action game. They're so good that the reimagined gonarch and nihilanth battles in black mesa took cues from it
The bosses are fun but honestly too easy. The core gameplay was more challenging than the spider mastermind and the cyber demon is the only challenging one. Also I wish there were more even if they are on the easy side

Liked the video but wanted to throw in something, The five weapon upgrade points in the top right hand corner is you're combat rating, getting all five means you ripped and tore every demon in a level. The ones you get for challenges and exploration just add to those five, so you can earn a total of 10 total weapon upgrade points per level. If you kill every demon, unlock the two exploration points, and the three challenge points. Since there are five for combat, two for exploration, and three for mission challenges.

The modern games with cover and Hp regeneration aren't lazy. Well now they kind of are because of how formulaic they became, but they're actually overdesigned without thought.
And in doom eternal you are a Roller coaster of death that stops when you run out of ammo in the middle of a hoard of demons
The only enemies the Doom 3 spawned in those “tight hallways” are mostly imps and/or maggots. If they were gonna throw a larger enemy into the mix, you could tell by through the environment.
Longer hallways = Pinky or Tentacle Commando
Arena-like areas = Hell Knights or Mancubi
