- Dusk is not only a love letter to fans of classic shooters, but it's also a great place to get into arena shooters in general, through its accessible mechanics, balanced difficulty curve, and brilliant level design and atmosphere. It succeeds its inspirations by a country mile, and that's something worth celebrating. Go play Dusk!

Hey! Glad the video is getting such a warm response. Wanted to address a couple of things people mentioned in the comments.
First off, yeah. This video spoils Dusk rotten. I should've warned everyone in the beginning. My intent was to analyze Dusk for those that have already played it, and for people new to this game...not exactly fair to spoil its majesty, is it? So I apologize.
"Dusk is not an arena shooter" is another comment I tend to see. And you're right! I apologize for making it seem like that was the game's core identity. What I aimed to explain was that mechanically it attempts to condition the player to movement unique to that genre. I mentioned that strafe jumping in Dusk was designed so that anyone can use it without difficulty, something that inherently isn't true about games like Quake III Arena considering the practice it takes to get really good at it. That can be seen as rewarding of course, and I'll agree with you on that one. It's been a long time since arena shooters were predominantly available when it comes to multiplayer shooters though. Dusk aims to bridge the gap between new and longtime fans of the genre. That's what I tried to get across. It also does this in certain levels too, most notably Erebus Reactor. That level is unquestionably one giant arena, so there you go. AND the game's multiplayer component turns it into an arena shooter...basically I wasn't entirely wrong. But that's not ALL of what Dusk is. Well aware of that, and I tried to convey that. Sorry!
Thanks for reading this. Love you all, and thanks for watching!
why the fuck cant we play it i grabahan
What about the fact they had STEPHAN FUCKING WEYTE as tge final boss, the voice actor for Caleb from Blood, one of the many inspirations for DUSK. GOD TIER
This is a great video, I just have one question...why do you include failed takes? Its always jarring and it doesnt really add anything other then an odd interruption.
It's a great video
You can kill a boss with soap so it’s a decent 9/10
Use the soap, cleanse them of their sins.
Plus, it's damage when thrown is OVER 9000!*
*Actually, it's exactly 9000
Chozo Ghost, Now it’s over 10 million.
just make sure not to drop it
Would be a 10/10 if it was tide pods.
8:44 - I died !! xD
Just so you know the bunny hoping doesn't take any skill at all. Just saying.
That's the point. It's integral to the game's movement. If it had a steep learning curve Dusk wouldn't be the same game.
Dusk is incredible and Andrew Hulshult deserves the Nobel Prize for the music
Called grammy award.
@@novakastmusic Yes I know, I was making a little joke there bud
I think him getting a part in doom eternal and possibly the next id games is as nobel prize as it gets
DUSK is my GOTY 2018 and nothing will change my mind, proof that high-budget AAA titles are nothing compared to some good ol' creativity.
Yeah. But the last season of The Walking Dead from Telltale released in 2018. So.......
Based on everything you just said, the home scene and the Jakob boss fight, I think I may have at least somewhat of an answer to what the story is. You and Jakob are the same person, well not the same person, but same in the sense that I think he was just like our character, fought through the cult only to reach the end and be bestowed with the dark god's power because all that fighting proved him worthy. He fighting the same way you do and having a similar arsenal I feel subtly references this, both you and him were most likely insignificant normal people at some point, but in the end you become harbingers of death and destruction, which appeased him. I mean your character used be a normal guy with a normal life, Jakob was most likely the same way until he ran into the cult. Only scene I can't decipher the meaning to is you impaling yourself again on the very sickles you were on at the beginning.
@The Xenomorphian it could be a representation that he brought himself there, that he left his family to pursue this treasure and that in a way, he put himself on those sickles. Being impressed by his power, the demon under dusk bestowed him with the power of champions. A normal man was turned into a killer much like I think jakob was, until the next one who is worthy comes.
"Complete the circle"
There's this theological theme of sacrificing your weak self for being better at something or as a person in the future.
"Memories fade and crumble"
"Who you were is insignificant, who you are now is inconceivable..."
Judging by these two lines Dusk Dude sacrificed his past and self in order to become something greater. Not by his own decision though, more in the sense that this is what Nyarlathotep envisioned for Dusk Dude. It's also a nice piece of foreshadowing that there's most likely not gonna be a happy end for you.
Jesus had the luck to die after being put up on a cross, Dusk Dude doesn't even get that novelty after being put on two meathooks.
@@noahraab2429 Very good point and observation there and after playing the game more, I have to agree.
The game does a great job of making you feel like no matter how many cultists and horrible abominations you mow down on your warpath, you are still way out of your depth
You can also Telefrag the Guardian.
I did that accidentally yesterday lol
easier said than done
We need a Dusk 2. This game was absolutely incredible. Amazing video. Couldn't agree more.
ULTRAKILL
@@zaidlacksalastname4905 Its not even the same game design
@@str8apem88 Game design is different from game universe or story
@@zaidlacksalastname4905 ultrakill is almost entirely different
Dusk is what Blood 2 should have been.
im not really an FPS fan at all but this looks pretty sick. i will say though, this video seemed almost as fast paced as the game itself, yet it similarly didnt sacrifice any of the detail or depth needed to keep it interesting. great video!
Something I want to point out is that I think the lack of frequency and spacing of when wendogos are used is masterful. During my first playthrough, it seemed like I had always JUST forgotten about the threat/possibility of them being around at the very moment that they were re-introduced.
This game has the most amazing ambient sound design I've ever heard in my life.
it's the only game to ever give me goosebumps from ambience over and over again and keep me so engaged it's not even funny
Reminder that Cero Miedo is the gentleman's way to play Dusk.
You told me to play it but I'm doing homework. Eh who needs English, I'll learn about story telling through Dusk
what happen to my comment D: I don't write it again..-.-
TL;dr version: Dusk great
and maybe tell your audience to buy Dusk BEFORE spoiling the whole game :p
Bro, it's your fault if you don't watch a spoilerless review.
Yeah stupid
I also appreciate the little things like the dedicated cigar button for quick smoke breaks, the reload button doing sick weapon flips, the fact that your vertical look is unlocked when you jump so you can do flips, and so on. This is such a great game.
Why am I not playing it right now?
Finals :/
me 2 :(
hope you're playing it now
mac port :(
I've been following this game since 2016 at Quakecon.
I fell in love the second I tried it out, even though it was just one level. Ended up becoming friends with Andrew and David, very chill, humble dudes. \m/
I'm gonna make an in-depth review on it as soon as the physical copies are released :D
Good video, but you definitely need a major spoiler warning
This video is talking about the design of the game, spoilers should be expected. That's like watching a 'making of' documentary then complaining that they spoiled the story, watch the movie first then the 'making of'.
I'd be interested in hearing your interpretation on the last few levels of the game. When I was first playing, I kinda dismissed the Homecoming level as not much more than simply Jacob trying to mess with Dusk Dude's head. However, as you stated, the storytelling in the game is so deliberate and intentional that I doubt an entire level with such a personal connection to the protagonist was just thrown in there for such a trite reason.
My theory now is that Dusk Dude has some sort of personal connection to the town of Dusk and may have even lived in the area at some point (hence why his home is affected by the corruption). We know that Dusk Dude has a very personal vendetta against the cult, to the point where he's willing to go through literal hell to track down the leader and even go toe-to-toe with a Lovecraftien deity in order to eradicate them. I heard one theory that maybe he was trying to hunt down Jacob in order to intentionally prove himself worthy to the deity and take control of the cult himself, but I'm not so sure about that since many of Jacob's lines (as well as the narration in the graphic novel) hint that Dusk Dude doesn't actually know what's going on or who he's really up against. I think at some point Dusk Dude either abandoned his family to hunt down the cult, or possibly the cult even murdered his family and he came to Dusk in order to seek revenge before getting captured.
However, I also like your suggestion that Dusk Dude himself might not be so innocent (I mean, he does callously mow down a couple thousand people by the end of the game so he's clearly got something going on upstairs, even if they all are evil cultists). I'm just wondering how you came to that conclusion.
Sounds similer to the Blood game.
I read somewhere that dusk dude is actually just a treasure hunter that left dusk town long time ago. And only came back after hearing that something happened while also looking for some loo, only to end up on some cultist meathook. This is why your morale (armor) are made up from treasures
I've been using Steam since 2014, and (I'm fairly certain) the last game I bought myself on Steam was Gmod, way back in December of that year. Nearly every game I own on Steam that costs money has either been gifted to me or I got it via trading TF2 keys for a Steam key.
Until a couple of days ago. Dusk is the first game I've actually bought for myself on Steam in about 5 years, and I certainly don't regret it. Played through the campaign twice already and played a few endless rounds. It's fucking fun.
Haven't touched the multiplayer yet. It scares me. I'll get around to that eventually.
This game
Amid Evil (which I haven't played yet; want to wait until it's fully release to preserve the suspense and my initial reaction to it)
Ion Maiden
ProDeus (but that title needs some serious tweaking at the moment)
2019 is gonna be a great year for PROPERLY-DONE 90s-style FPS titles!
Also, small gripe about this video: Calling DUSK an Arena Shooter is incorrect. The only aspect of this game that is an Arena Shooter is Endless mode. Arena Shooters would be more along the lines of Serious Sam and Painkiller
Games like DUSK, Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Half-Life, etc. could all be categorized as, for example, Corridor Shooters
We also just had Project Warlock which was received well.
Imagine Dusk with just a wee bit higher budget.
The Blood remaster as well by Nightdive Studios!
This game does have arena sections, like E2M6, E3M9 and a lot of smaller sections of other maps, but I do like how it refrains from locking you in an arena a little more than DOOM 2016
i hated the guardian boss at the end of episode 2 because of the arena hes in.
for a game that has such a great emphasis on movement and speed it puts you into claustrophobically narrow corridors way too often.
Im curious if your opinion changed bc for me i love speedrunning in the tight halls and flicking my shots to hit buttons
Is-is that texTURE FILTERING?? AOOOUAUGHGHHHH
jk tho you do you
Nah, I like dusk, I really do, but It's really not that great in terms of gameplay or story. Sure, you can bounce around and go crazy, but that's hardly more viable than sitting in a corner and picking off all the enemies one by one. The guns are satisfying, and the enemies have unique designs, but there is no thought required in engagement. Pick a gun, shoot it till they all die. That's all it boils down too. It's also super annoying how enemies spawn or teleport behind you often. It's cheep.
"Loading gibs" lol Man that takes me back. I fuckin love it
great video, you nailed all the points about why DUSK is so good. It keeps the quick save/load mechanics also which helps when things get rough. few things though :
- you didn't mention the soap bar that one-hit kills bosses
- the crystal of madness - if you throw one at enemies, they go crazy and attack each other.
- I thought the pictures on the wall I thought were David the developer and his family. I like how this and many other questions aren't answered, and left up to the player.
he did mention the soap lol
@@ahbeef oops
I totally should've mentioned the Crystal of Madness. I used it a lot to break enemies up in Episode 3. Thanks for bringing it up!
@@LiamTriforce What about pressing R to flip the weapon?
yeah the pictures in the house are david and his family but the cult leader/ big john faces are dave oshry the owner of new blood
Shit I beat the game on the second highest difficulty and I didn't even know you could hover with the crossbow
I was waiting for a video like this to come out this game has inspired many of my projects and I can't wait for coop mode and the switch port cause then I can play it with the friend I've been persuading to get it but obviously I have to get a switch in order for that to happen.
this is a great video. I'm using this as a reference for making my arena shooter that's in development right now. Old-school style level design and aesthetics are what's inspiring my project the most.
Really
I feel like dusk suceeds where doom 2016 failed. Dont get me wrong, i love doom 2016, ive beaten it on the hardest difficulty, but its unmistakably modern, even as it tries to be old school. I mean come on, there isnt even fucking strafe jumping.
J o l l y G r a p e f r u i t the new doom is different for sure, but I still enjoy it. Did you beat it on ultra nightmare or nightmare?
Cosmic Cretin from what I’ve read, engine limitations made it hard. Eternal should be better in that regard from what I hear
playing nüdoom for the first time and wholeheartedly agree.pretty cool game but nowhere near as fun as this. just gotta adjust my expectations to appreciate the arena battles, upgrading, and loads of unnecessary story
"There wasn´t even fucking strafe jumping". Yeah, because DooM was always known for its Strafe Jumping . Especially Classic DooM. And "loads" of unnecessary Story ? What, the 2 or 3 times the game takes control away from you for a couple of seconds ? I guess the meeting with Hayden could qualify as "unnecessary" Story, but thats just one time; and not "loads".
My main gripe with DooM 2016 is that it often felt more like Painkiller than Classic DooM, with all its closed combat-Arenas. But then on the other hand, Painkiller is to this day one of my favorites. Nevertheless I´d like to see more combat taking place in Classic DooM-Style. And the level-design taking more inspiration from DooM I and II as well.
That's because the new Doom is a re-imagining, not a nostalgic successor... It took the identity and thematic design that Doom had developed over 20+ years, which is the viscosity of hard-pressured combat, something that became more of the staple representation of Doom in a lot of the successful .wads and overhauls like Brutal Doom. Mick Gordon teaches you this with the soundtrack alone. Doom 2016 didn't fail in _anything_ it was aiming to succeed in... except for replayability, modding and multiplayer. Dropped the ball there. But it's painfully immature to still think DOOM2k16 was meant to replicate what the original was in conceptual game design. What, you think they were fucking idiots? You think they didn't know, one hundred percent, what they were doing with the level/game design? Come on.
Thank god for UTube or I would have never heard of this game. It is pretty tight but, the overall difficulty is low... However, exploring the levels and trying to squeeze out every secret spot is worth way more than the price of admission.... Solo Indie developer makes a sleeper hit that puts the big publishers to shame for their lack of vision and artistry???? Surprise, surprise, surprise.....
This is my favorite game this gen and you did a good job explaining why. It is sooooooooooooooo refreshing to see an fps game not take the Half Life style and take control away from you to tell it's story. DUSK is like, here's awesome action and here's bits of story if you want to examine it. Western indie devs are killing it this gen. Cosmic Star Heroine, DUSK, Lost in Vivo, A Hat in Time and Guacamelee 2. Fuck, indie games can be great when everything comes together.
Strafejumping looks like Return to Castle Wolfenstein/Wolf Enemy Territory trickjumping 😎
nice seeing you here
@@connorvogt4520 ah hey! Found me in the wild. Ah man this comment is 2 years old whoa! Cool
14:54 FNAF "Hold up"
This is an annoying trope today of never telling the whole story, just hints then leaving it all ambiguous.
Their other game Amid Evil also features gorgeous levels, although the game mechanics and level design are simpler than in Dusk.
My nose started bleeding as I was watching this.
This game really rules, one of my favorites in the last five years. Soundtrack kicks ass too.
Damn looks cool but weapons are ugly as my life
i didn't see this when the game launched but i was following the game for a year or so before dusk launched its first episode and have talked to the devs at both quakecon 2017 and 2018 and can vouch that they are some cool dudes.
for those wondering why armor is morale see below
also the "beta/original" story THAT IS NOT USED is described by david below
"12:46 PM] David (Dusk Dev): tl;dr version was that the whole game area was a cordoned off abandoned Chernobyl-like disaster area where they were researching mystical magical lovecrafty ruins things discovered underneath rural farmland, but everything went completely nuts. There was no cult or anything like that. And you're going in there because there's rumors of ancient gold + treasure still sitting around from the ruins."
I think morale also effects movement speed.
@@h4724-q6j it doesn't it is just armor your movement can be affected by the walk/run key though or bhopping
the dichotomy between too good not to play vs too spoopy to want to try is very real.
welp, time to spend 20 bucks. good video as always!
It has been ported to the switch 3 days ago
Dusk was an insane game that I thoroughly enjoyed. Single player games need to be made like this. Amazing story telling, map design and enemies. God, I need more of this!
This game is fucking sick. I also love how UA-cam thinks its Quake.
Well shit, m8, I think you just sold me this game.
just 100%'d the game on DUSK HD mode earlier this week
totalllllllly recommend (+seeing all the secrets this game has to offer)
Bought the game while it was still in early access, and holy shit, episode 3 was definitely worth the wait. The level design, new enemies, the atmosphere and the new sword, it was just amazeballs to experience. Well im off to play some more Dusk, hope you all have a wonderful time playing it for the first, third or the fiftieth time.
Yeesh, I know its all about that gameplay but this makes HL1 look next-gen. That shotgun has less polygons than it holds shells.
The gameplay really does make up for it
6:28 Me in the bathroom be like
Also BTW you can telefrag the Guardian with his own projectiles.
One simple thing about the ending mah bro. If Nyalotothep trusts you?
Yeah, you are F********** to no end. If you were evil before, now you are gonna be the WORST!
Been playing Dusk while I wait on my other all time favorite shooter, Maximum Action, to be stabilized
those fucking invisible wyverns still haunt me to this day 9/10
I remember seeing this game first back in 2017 and immediatly go to the store to get a steam gift card so i could get it on steam for myself
Looks interesting. Do have it on my wishlist for later storage. Looking at it right now, though might be too fast for my eyes to really enjoy. I don't mind fast, or arenas, but this seems to be a little in excess of my physical limits.
You'd be surprised what you'll be able to do by the end of the game
If Rocket Jump Ninja can still play with no issues as he's nearing 40 (and made a video on this exact subject) then you can too.
Well against such encouragement, what choice do I have but to try in the future. And watch this other video later for this guy's opinion.
@@PersonWMA also triforce seems to be playing on Cero Miedro the games Hard difficulty where projectiles move much faster than the easier difficultys
Also, thank you! I may not have ever discovered this game had it not been for you.
Of all the reviews of this game on youtube you did the best one hands down. You really have an understanding of games and its a thrill listening to you. Great job
I’m just gonna say it. This game is better than both Doom and Duke Nukem. Obviously they have hindsight on their side and can improve on the design of those games and obviously I’ve played the latter two more because they’ve been out for 30 years, but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s a masterpiece. I’ve run through this game probably a dozen or more times since 2019 when I first heard about it compared to the doom trilogy and Duke Nukem, which I’ve only played through once or twice since then. It’s like the Super Mario Bros 3 of first-person shooters. Mechanically, it’s a near-perfect game.
"but in the level homecoming, the game implies something rather interesting about the character you control. the game brings you back home....no enemies around-" *blows up enemy*
What about Cultic? it's great!!! I had a blast finishing it! I couldnt help but start again two weeks later, it's really good, best old school shooter imo but you got me intrigued, I may try Dusk too! :)
Biliniear filtering? You fucking monster. 0/10. OKay, in all seriousness this is a great vid. DUSK is a masterwork and I hope David does more. Also eyy, I've been on Saturday Fragnights too :D Maybe I'll run into you, if you see something about Fennecs in the name its probably me :)
I've been trying to decide what to play for spooky season. I sorted your videos by oldest today, saw this, and now I'm gonna re-play Dusk. Thank ya!
Strafe jumping? Ive tried it. I just sorta feels like you wiggle your cursor about to gain speed. Its not the smooth, satisfying feel that is strafe jumping at all. Feels more like they tried to combing bhopping and strafe jumping together.
The weapons are the worst thing about Dusk. They feel great, but the arsenal is kind of bland except for the crossbow which is excellent. I too find it difficult to find anything to criticize about Dusk. Nitpicks is about all I can manage.
This game is a masterpiece. I bought it day one on switch and I also ordered the physical copy from limited run games. This is easily in my top 10 first person shooters of all time. The order changes depending on my mood
Ive played every quake halflife and doom game and many others Like terraria csgames etc yall know who got a steam library with over 30 games and dusk is up in my top 5 to diskribe what i like i only need 10 words:
skill based fps games on or of line lol rofl
last game i finished just b4 new years fucking love it
The physical version is available now on Limited run games website. Sadly the soundtrack is not available on CD..
I accidentally demolished the Guardian in under a minute on my first playthrough by tripping through a portal and telefragging him
Dusk legitimately has the best video game OST I’ve ever heard. Every track fucking slaps.
There's so many retro shooters, how does it compare to say Ion Fury/Project Warlock/Amid Evil/Wrath Aeon of Ruin?
14:38 theres no mystery here at what its implying just listen to the houses ambience.
the ambience is a mix of fire sounds and screaming of a child and a woman il let you reading figer it out.
The slide move is goated. It should be standard in fps games, and it seems like Ultrakill and Selaco took notice
Ultrakill and Dusk are actually published by the same people
I accept your apology for your voice being different than the last video. it took me a while to forgive you but I think I have reached that place in my heart now.
7:00 this man is the only thing in any video game to make me uncomfortable, the introduction fucking spooked me good and i felt uncomfortable seeing them for the rest of the game
I would know that strafe jumping is so good, i made a video where i speedran one of the mid-game levels, erebus reactor, lol
I just discovered this game only recently and I'm absolutely HOOKED
"Isn't popular" Gets gold for Early Access game
12:00 i love this video and its analysis but please for the love of god do not enable bloom, it does not work for this game in the slightest except the final boss fight
Totally agree, great game mechanics and hidden secrets to uncover
I loved this game to if you have a soft spot for first person shooters like doom or quake dusk should be up your alley
Don't knock Doom 2016. Everything about it is awesome.
This game needs a grappling hook and better level design for multiplayer.
Im so disappointed in you
I cant believe you didnt talk about the music

Dusk made NewBlood Int. SOOOOO much money hahahaha
there might be sequel too!
Glad I heard about this game. So much fun. Would recommend to anyone at twice the price. Definitely NOT a cheap nostalgia knock-off

Dusk is the best modern retro shooter ever made !
go BUY it
DUSK is the shit! 90's FPS design exemplified!
Woooooooah great game but serious spoilers for real though!
The same guy who made this also makes horror walking sims
besides doom eternal, dusk is hands down the best FPS I've played in years and easily one of the best FPS I've ever played. I always come back to playing it
And you gotta admit. This games is alot scarier than DOOM.
My only complaint is I'm not a big fan of the moments you lose your flashlight because I have trouble with dark lighting in games. But there's usually stuff like torches you can find and the flash light is never gone long
In the dev stream, David mentions that the broken flashlights have a clear purpose of letting you enjoy the more darker levels with coloured lighting.
Have you played ultrakill? I think you would love it
Is frag night still a thing or am I late to the party?
Tim was right though because Quake Champions is faster with the right champion, just saying.
