You got the meaning right. In the song she looks back on her life and laments about different joys and sorrows. The "George the Wipe" reference is a studio technician that apparently erased a complete tape of one of Kate's recordings by accident (although its been said that Kate was pulling a practical joke on the guy, thus her lyrics "Oh God I can't stop laughing, this sense of humor of mine, it isn't funny at all"). Kate wrote the line "to those we love, to those who will survive" for her mother, Hannah, who was sick at the time of recording (who later passed away). At the end of the song, she mentions several people in her life who had died: "Maureen" was Kate's aunt, "Bubba" was Gary Hurst, one of her dance partners, "S'Murph" was her guitarist, Allan Murphy, "Teddy" was John Barrett, a sound engineer at Abbey Road studios where she recorded Never For Ever (they used to have chair spinning contests in the control room to see who would get sick first - Kate always won because she knew how to pirouette and move her head!!), "Michael" was famous film director Michael Powell (director of the movie The Red Shoes), whom she met on a snowy day in New York City shortly before his death from cancer in 1990, and finally, "Bill" was Bill Duffield, Kate's lighting director on her 1979 tour, who died in a tragic fall through a stage trap door just before the tour started.
Gosh you are a real Kate Bush geek just like me.. I was lucky enough to see her at the before the dawn show in London in 2014 on my own sat four rows from the front and I went for a meal with fans from around the world in the church opposite the Hammersmith apollo before the start of the show.. May I ask you where your from please.. Jamie thanks
@@jamiegrieve5875 You're very lucky, I wasn't able to go to any of her BTD shows. I've been a fan since I first saw her on Saturday Night Live in December of 1978 (I was 18 years old then). I've probably read every article in those old Homeground fan magazines and on Gaffaweb and watched every interview available on UA-cam, so I'd probably do well in a Kate trivial pursuit game!! :) I'm from Boston, but currently am in the Austin, Texas area
It's always interesting to see such a devoted fan-you couldn't have picked a better artist. We love what you brought to us Kate-the world is a better place because of people like you ♥
This song makes me tear up every time. All those people she mentioned in the song were real people she had moments with during her life that have passed away.
She’s singing to people she’s lost. I love the line ‘to those who will survive.’ Maybe you have to be a certain age, but as you get older, more and more people in your life are gone many years. It’s bittersweet.
This is a very personal song, which can be interpreted by anyone, the snowstorm swirl is breathtaking. The orchestration on this is beyond belief. Her and Bowie set the tone for the creative geniuses which have come since from Britain.
If you don't know Kate Bush.. she is one of the most successful and influential female artists from the UK. Maybe try out one of her biggest hits "Running Up That Hill."
Kate the great. Can't wait. Personal favs Blow Away, Pull Out The Pin, Breathing, Deeper Understanding...You know what? I have too many to list. Shout out to the bass player, Danny Thompson on Pull Out The Pin. Spectacular work.
I heard that album when it came out in 1985..It was introduced with cool videos at the time... Didn't understand the whole album at all.. But at some point I really got it... cause Kate's albums need time to grow on you. (And I say Kate with no disrespect cause there is only one Kate for me in the world).
I'm new to Kate Bush and I mean seriously taking the journey from the beginning. I haven't acquired this particular album yet, nevertheless, I've seen this video several times and now it nearly brings me to tears. If it's about what it feels to be...it's so lovely and precious.
I envy you and the journey you are about to go on but then you probably envy me because I have had her in my life since the 70's ! Watch the video to Sensual World
The unsung hero of this song is Michael Kamen's masterful orchestration that backs it all. Kamen was a film composer and prolific collaborator with several different musical artists from Kate Bush to Metallica before his death in the early 2000s.
It’s from an album called the red shoes. It’s a concept album about red ballet shoes that are possessed. Once on the occupant can’t stop dancing. Therefore her twists and dancing are the red shoes making her dance. She’s had them on for a while and is nearing the end. Her body can’t do it anymore. Hence her reflections on her life in this song. She sees on the people she lives and the memories connected with them. Very very powerful song by Kate. Extraordinary!
All the people she mentions are real people in her life that have passed. I know Bill at the end was a lighting crew member that was killed during her first concerts which really affected her
You got it right thats how it is when this was first out i had a wonderful friend we cried when we heard this sadly my friend has passed, this took me right back to 1993 young foolish friends x
Thanks, George, for suggesting it. Kate is one of the greats and you ain't heard quite the diversity and intensity of what she can do yet. This a beautiful somber piece about loved ones. I have so many suggestions to make, but the first that comes to mind is GET OUT OF MY HOUSE for something more different and quite stunning.
The video when she is swirling in the snow, oh my God. Toyah Wilcox said the first time she heard this song, she had to park her car in a lay-by because she couldn’t see for tears.
Kate Bush wrote " The man with the child in his eyes" when she was only 12yrs old, finished it when she was 15 then recorded the song when she was 17. Now please tell me how that's even possible? Kate Bush is no ordinary human that's for sure !!
I would say if I was comparing her with anyone it would be Mozart. The Man with the Child in his eyes is not just a song, it is an orchestral masterpiece and written by a 12 year old girl. If you take the words from that song and just listen to the piano, it is worthy of Chopin.
I have been enthralled by Kate Bush and her enormous talent since she began collaborating with David Gilmour in the 1970s. She's unique and uniquely gifted! Some don't know that she self-accompanies on her magnificent Grotrian-Steinweg studio grand piano. She's also a superb dancer who, like Bowie, studied movement and mime under Lindsay Kemp.
Oh, I'm glad you finally got to Kate Bush. There is so much throughout her career that you have to experience and she is all over the place. A true original. This is one of her most straightforward songs. I can't wait for you to experience more from her.
This song reminds me of the Red shoes, and what's left at the end when the drive of life has left nothing but exhaustion of our own life. We can fade while remembering some moments of pleasure💃
just found u guys on youtube, thanks for reaction to Kate Bush, whose music has profoundly impacted the music landscape back in the day and continues to inspire many artistes. Btw u remind me of the actor Chris Evans (Captain America) 😆
This is part of a long form video, kinda like Beyonce's Lemonade, called The Line, The Curve and the Cross. It's a retelling of the Red Shoes. It's from the album The Red Shoes.
Seemed to me like she was falling & remembering moments in time & passed loved ones. You can see cracked ice she is about to hit at the very end of vid.
love Kate so much, hmmm, there is that thing, love, so more than the highest musicality and originality isn't it ? something about honesty and vulnerability , and that's very powerful , and kate does this over and over .... maybe its the elegance too ? because thsi isn't Tori Amos, its not Patty Smith ... perhaps Amy Winehouse is on this level, ok I'm just rambling, lovely reaction
Too bad the official video version with a somewhat disturbing intro monologue showing just her eyes rotating against a black background was left out here.
Are there restrictions for not using the official video. The writing on the screen was a distraction to the video story and the song. I love the song but the writing on the video distracted everything else..
Hey Paddy, we are definitely more likely to get copywrited using the official video, and we do prefer seeing the lyrics to help w/ our analysis. Sorry that it distracted you!
@@SightAfterDark There is a prequel to the song, please listen to it 🥰 Loved Kate since forever but this song just makes me feel Human. All my strengths and frailties, a connection.

Oh wow. That's actually really sad :( this song is a lot deeper than we realized!
And it is mainly about her mother passing

Kate bush needs a lot more recognition, she was ahead of her time and did what SHE wanted.
Absolutely!

She's amazing completely original and never bettered

great reaction....Kate Bush has such a great catalog !

The best female British singer IMO by far. Totally original, captivating, and memorising in all her performances. An amazing talent.
She's half irish trough her mother. It only matters in the context of her musical influences.

This is something special. As a long time Kate fan right from the start, it's nice seeing other people really get it.
All the people she mentions are real people in her life that have passed. I know Bill at the end was a lighting crew member that was killed during her first concerts which really affected her

I think this song is about people in her life who had died by then. Those are the names she calls out at the end.
Such a simple and beautiful song.
