These are not call-outs to people in the studio, but call outs to memories of people in the studio. People who pass through our lives, give us "moments of pleasure" and then disappear. That is the "gift of time", moments that enrich the tapestry of our lives as we go. For Kate, a lot of the providers of such moments were naturally other musicians, dancers, studio engineers, etc. But we each have our own collection.

One of the most beautiful songs ever, as Kate looks back on her life in remembrance. The "George the Wipe" reference is a studio technician that apparently erased a complete tape of one of Kate's recordings by accident (although Kate's friends have said she was pulling a practical joke on the guy, thus her lyrics "Oh God I can't stop laughing, this sense of humor of mine, it isn't funny at all"). Kate wrote the line "to those we love, to those who will survive" for her mother Hannah, who was sick at the time of recording (who later passed away). At the end of the song, she mentions several people in her life who had died: "Maureen" was Kate's aunt, "Bubba" was one of her dance partners, Gary Hurst, "S'Murph" was her guitarist, Allan Murphy, "Teddy" was John Barrett, a sound engineer at Abbey Road studios where she recorded Never For Ever (they used to have chair spinning contests in the control room to see who would get sick first!), "Michael" was famous film director Michael Powell, whom she met on a snowy day in New York City shortly before his death from cancer in 1990, and finally, "Bill" was Bill Duffield, Kate's lighting director on her 1979 tour, who died in a tragic fall through a stage trap door just before the tour started.

Her reaction is very very interesting. She gets it. On an emotional and intellectual level. He seems lost. Men are always behind the curve on these things. I say this as a man in his 50s. Trust me. We can be very lost sometimes. That's okay too.

Sorry Mr. Hanier. I didn't mean to disparage you in anyway. You're probably well ahead of the emotional IQ. She's with you after all :)

The most gorgeous , wonderful song. The words and orchestration is so moving. I always shed a tear where Kate sings, " every old sock meets an old shoe" by her mum,,, salt water fills my eyes.

All the people she calls out at the end are close friends and family who have died. Bubba was a dancing partner of Kate’s who died of AIDS; Smurph (Alan Murphy) a session guitarist who also died of AIDS; Michael a film maker, one of who’s films Red Shoes is based on, and who is also referenced as the man in New York with the walking stick; Bill was a lighting technician who died during The Tour of Life in 1979.
However, the song isn’t sad, and Kate herself doesn’t see it that way. Instead it’s a celebration of life and the people she has known.
    Hauntingly beautiful.

It was a time to look back for her in those days. She split up with his longtime boy friend, her mother was diagnosed being very ill and died soon later, some of her closest companions had died (e.g. Alan Murphy, see above). But as you said, she found a way to celebrate their common moments of pleasure in a wonderful song!

She has this recurring theme throughout her career of kind of like stopping where you are and taking in that moment because it is fleeting.
I think her most emotional songs have come later in her career e.g. This Woman’s Work, Moments of Pleasure and my favorite of them all A Coral Room.

See when she says “together we tripped from the stage into the pit” reference to bill the lighting director. What do you think? He was on the stage looking for his lucky hat. There was a panel missing he didn’t see the gap on the stage…He died by falling 17 feet and died a week later. 😔

Thank you guys - this is just such an awesome track all about those people who had impacted Kate's life, and almost all of whom were no longer with her. Those remembrances whether they were things those people did or what they said were triggers for happy memories. Incidentally "The Case of George the Wipe" is all about an unfortunate tape operator who accidentally wiped one of Kate's songs before it got to the "The Dreaming" album - she found it funny, others didn't!!

Malcolm Lawrence I heard she found it funny because he didn't actually erase it. She made him think he did. That's why she said her sense of humour wasn't funny at all. As if she felt guilty about it.

All the people she mentions who appear at the end are friends and colleagues that sadly passed away. All people Kate had a strong connection with. And of course her beloved mother was also very ill at the time and would pass away shortly after this was released. Incidentally, the gorgeous arrangement for the song was done by the late and brilliant Michael Kamen.

It’s more than cute, it’s real musical art! And by a historic musical genius. This song describes moments and memories she has had in her real life with close loved ones before they passed away. Doesn’t get much better, especially on paper. Cheers!

If you did enjoy these 'Moments Of Pleasure' where life is celebrated by revisiting cherished moments she had with deceased loved ones, I suggest 'A Coral Room' (2005) and 'Among Angels'(2011). The last one was was also performed during her 'Before The Dawn' live shows of 2014. These three tracks share a common theme. In the most beautiful way.

Also- I’ve also never been able to get into Kate Bush really at all, though I’ve wanted and *tried* to in the past... I just simply never could. Until now! Nice sound this one.

Yeah, we're learning so much we didn't know about Kate's music. Cynthia wasn't a fan but, these last few have impressed her. I was hooked since I saw her perform Wuthering Heights before I was a teen. But I only knew her hits from the 80's.
