It's fair to call her something approaching a genius. How many 13 year olds could write The Man with the Child in His Eyes? She's in her teens and writing music of the kind that established artists are writing in their 2nd album when they've found their voice.
She's a storyteller and many of her songs are inspired by a literary narrative. According to Wikipedia, Cloudbusting takes its inspiration from the 1973 Peter Reich memoir A Book of Dreams which Bush read and found deeply moving, the song is about the very close relationship between psychiatrist and philosopher Wilhelm Reich and his young son, Peter. It describes the boy's memories of his life with Reich on their family farm, called Orgonon, where the two spent time "cloudbusting", a rain-making process which involved using a machine designed and built by Reich - a machine called a cloudbuster - to point at the sky. The lyrics further describes the elder Reich's abrupt arrest and imprisonment, the pain of loss the young Peter felt, and his helplessness at being unable to protect his father.
Kate ended her 2014 concerts with this song, it was a great way to end the show; the whole audience and band chanting along in unison. I'll never forget the experience of being in the same space as Kate, seeing her for real with my own eyes. There was an amazing love between Kate and her audience, it was magic💖
When I first heard this album in 1985 (no kidding), 'Cloudbusting' and 'Running up that Hill' were my instant favourites. The rest of the album took some time to chew, but now it's my favourite Kate Bush album. (Did I mention I'm a fan of hers?)
@MäkirannantörmäI'm not sure, but you seem to refer to the Diamond Dogs-album by David Bowie(1974).. not a bad choice in that. Lots of dogs involved on both of the album covers..
Fun fact, Kate Bush pioneered the use of the headset microphone. Her first major concerts used a lot of dance, movement and props so she couldn't hold a standard microphone as she needed her hands free. So she's a bit of a tech wonder as well.
Just call her what she is Guys she’s a genius and no female artist comes anywhere close to her in the UK and beyond hey just an opinion and everyone likes something different she certainly delivers that 🌍✌🏼
Kate Bush is a genius, a true original and something of a pioneer for women. She was the first woman in the UK to have a self-written #1 song and #1 album. Kate has always stayed true to her vision.
Donald Sutherland once told he originally refused to be part of a music video, he said to his manager to decline. Later that day somebody knocked on the door of his hotel room. Donald opened the door, and there stood this tiny woman in front of him. It was Kate Bush who wanted to convince him to do this. Fortunately she was successful.
This song makes my heart melt every single time. And the video is really touching. Kate Bush is a musical genius (I don't say that lightly) and I highly recommend the album 'Hounds of Love'. You won't regret it.
Her voice is so beautiful you’d know it was was her within 5 secs of hearing it. So sweet. Such unpredictable phrasing. There’s a hypnotic feel on many of her songs too. Great submission.
This was the encore for Kate's London concerts a few years back. To hear the whole audience sing along with the 'yay-ee-yay-ee-oh's was a deeply moving experience.
This song has taken 30 years to unpack, genius.Sutherland had visa problems in Britain so volunteered his time. The best money Donald never earned. He must be proud of this one.
She was actually considered a musical genius at a very young age , she did after all write over 200 songs before she was 17 including "The man with the child in his eye's"
Kate Bush is not only a Singer she is a Songwriter, Producer and Musican . Hounds of Love is one of the best Albums. NEXT Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel Don't give up
I think this is my favorite Kate video and song. This is my first time I ever saw Donald Sutherland. Hugh Laurie was in her Experiment IV video which is wild.
Around the time of the release Bush sent Peter Reich a VHS copy of the music video. Reich was immediately a fan. He later told Dazed magazine "Quite magically, this British musician had tapped precisely into a unique and magical fulfilment of father-son devotion, emotion and understanding. They had captured it all."[
Her albums from Never Forever onwards are all essential listening for anyone who appreciates real art and innovation in music, made by an artist who so obviously makes music because they have to. Many imitators followed, but she's still in a class of her own.
I would say ALL her albums, right from the start ("The Kick Inside" and "Lionheart" included) are essentiel listening. Those 2 albums were written (except 3 songs) from the age of 13 to 18 which makes Kate Bush a remarkable and rare pop artist, and are surely not anecdotal or trivial compared to those that will follow. "The Kick Inside" is one of the most impressive debut albums EVER, don't you think? Personnally, I exclusively listened to this album at the time it was released, and I still see it as incredibly unique. "Lionheart", released the same year, is commonly seen as a pale follow-up, which I much disagree with. There was an obvious evolution, especially for the Lyrics. But I agree with the fact that from "Never for Ever", things became more and more fascinating. "The Dreaming" and "Hounds of Love" are just masterpieces.
@@cuckoofan Yes, I have all of her albums, obviously.(and some 2nd tries too and Aerial)... 'Lionheart' wasn't a strong album as a whole, but it contained 'Wow' and 'Searching for Peter Pan' at least. 'Kick inside' was a very strong debut album(as you said and if I say I have the vinyl, you know I'm vEery OLD), and besides the obvious famous tracks I'd like to mention 'Moving' as my favourite track. Kate makes music you remember rather than forget.
Yes that is Donald Sutherland, Kiefer Sutherland's father playing with Kate. And it's about Wilhelm Reich's son Keith'd memories. The song is pure magic.
kate was my first great love in music. I listened to her music for hours and always found new things that fascinated me. she has enchanted me for years and she simply remains my favorite. the way she plays with the notes and dances to them is unique. the somewhat different music made me dream and feel good. thank you kate for the beautiful wonderful moments i had listening to you^^ her magic is still there
Absolutely one of the Classic 70-80's rock alt/tunes from a major Chanteuse of that era. Kate Bush is an acquired to taste to some, but loved by many. Her collaboration with Peter Gabriel on "Don't Give Up" is emotionally uplifting and her songs "Deeper Understanding" and "Rocket's Tail" are some of my faves you may want to listen to when you're in a downlow mood. Thanks for the tunes guys....Cheers
KATE THE GREAT hit everyone of us like a beautiful angelic force as if from a dreamworld in 78. she quickly became the best progressive female creative artist for many years afterwards. Her talent only grew and evolved throughout the 80's. The DREAMING is her most progressive and avante-garde. This is not just a song. This a story and a masterpiece that stands the test of time. It takes Kate Bush's unfathomable talent to do this (with a little help from the impeccable one and only Donald Sutherland)
Most of Kate Bush’s songs have complicated lyrics, with a story. Not at all traditional love songs and such. Not that she doesn’t talk about love. She’s really a poet, singer, dancer, musician and artist all together.
This album, both sides, is a masterpiece. Kate Bush is a musicologist like Brian Eno, David Byrne, Ruyuchi Sakamoto and David Sylvian. Decades later this album is still one I have to listen to from start to end without breaks and one I always get new meanings and hear new things each time I listen. She is also one of those artists of artists. She is a dancer, choreographer, writer etc... so her musical compositions feel 'well thought out" like you said.
@@PjRjHj I mean she doesn't just use her voice to sing and transmit words and ideas. She uses it to make sounds and voaclisations like birds and animals. You could remove tracks made by musical instruments and replace them sounds she is able to make with her voice.

An interesting fact a very few people know it seems: Patti Smiith was also inspired by Peter Reich's "A Book of Dreams" in her song "Birdland" from "Horses", 10 years prior to the release of Kate Bush's "Cloudbusting". Both songs are so interesting in their own ways.

The first Kate Bush song I ever heard was "Jig of Life" from this very album. Heard it back in my small Midwestern town on a College radio station. From that point on I was hooked.
Kate Bush is amazing. She's extremely talented and has a great voice. I love her musical arrangements. She was one of a few 80s musicians who used the Fairlight CMI a lot for creating special sounds. "Running up that hill" was the most played Kate Bush song in clubs those days. I love the hunting synth sounds in her songs that fit into 80s music. And last but not least she's a very attractive woman. :)
The cloudbusting machine was designed and fabricated by HR Giger and co,, and is very beautiful. The actual cloudbusters were much, much smaller, and had several thin pipes that pointed straight up at the sky. A note on the song: this was a special mix for this short film, while the album mix is shorter. The extended section comes when Peter (Kate) and Reich (Donald Sutherland) are in his study, through to where the men are coming down the steps. If you want to understand Kate, you have to realize she is a storyteller, very filmic, and knows exactly how to make the music and lyrics work to enhance the story.
There's also at least one house remix/sampled song using the phrase "ooh, I just know that something good is gonna happen"; wish I remembered who did it so I could find it now. Anyone??? :)
@@heathermaysloan it is called Cloudbusting: the Orgonon Mix. Originally, there were 12-inch singles of four of the songs on side one of Hounds of Love. On the b side of each 12-in single were shorter extra songs. A long time ago a box set called This Woman's Work was released, and it included two CDs of all the singles through the Sensual World album, as well as all of the albums up to and including that one. Then in 2018, Kate remastered all of the albums and all of the singles and released a box set on her Fish People label. You can actually buy a four CD set of the singles on her website or Amazon. It is called The Other Sides.
@@mosaics2024 omg, thank you! I thought the single I was thinking of was not a KB remix but a different artist sampling - in like the the early 90's...but definitely will look up the Orgonon Mix! Peace :)
Kate Bush is fantastic. She was listening to her older Brothers Prog albums like King Crimson and Pink Floyd and later discovered by David Gilmoure.(Pink Floyd) If you want to listen to an extraordinary voice i can recomend Mari Boine she's a Sami and very spiritual. Check out (Brother Eagle) live in Oslo Nrk(they dont block). This music takes you to places you never have been. You are the best.👌
If you really want to experience the magic of this song, is to listen to it near or at the beach early in the morning when the waves crash the shore. Her music is nature. Being that listening to her outside really brings a oneness with the all. A brilliant talent. Iam glad I found her music, so long ago.
This is Kate when her lower voice was gaining strength. She, like Joni Mitchell, started out as a light soprano. This is a chronological list where you can hear her vocal development. Oh yes, the videos show her dancing skills: The Man With the Child in His Eyes, Feel It, Wow (Version 1 video), Hammer Horror (live at Hammersmith-Odeon video), Babooska (video), Army Dreamers (video), Pull Out the Pin, Houdini, Get Out of My House, Running Up That Hill (video), And Dream of Sheep, Jig of Life, This Woman's Work, Moments of Pleasure (video), Lily, and Ne T'un Fe Pas. There is no one like her. She and Joni hold the standard for singer-songwriters, male or female. Both, completely different from each other, are artists of the Highest Order. I hope you can sample some of these, ideally as listed! Happy Listening!
Cynthia, I have a feeling that a sampling with the ear, may be turned into a physical sample, or is that what you really meant, or am I completely off track?
This is a very deep song with a lot of backstory. This song was inspired by Peter Reich's writings about his relationship with his father Wilhelm Reich, whose theories and opinions were suppressed by the FDA back in the 1930's. He was jailed for two years for contempt, literal tons of his publications were ordered burned by the court. He died after about a year incarcerated, of a heart attack. Donald Sutherland is Wilhelm Reich in the video. Kate is Peter. It is a great video. The song of course is phenomenal. "You looked too small in that big black car to be a threat to the men in power." Yet in reality, he did seem a threat to then, they jailed him, and destroyed his work. Very powerful song.
That's my new Kate Bush favorite. She's collaborated with Peter Gabriel on several occasions. In addition to their duets: "Don't Give Up" and "Another Day," she also adds vocals on Peter's "Games Without Frontiers" (she's singing "Jeux sans frontières") and "No Self Control."
She produces her own records too. She knows exactly how something should sound. This song was used very successfully in a long sequence in a Handmaids Tale - the video is on you tube, type Handmaids tale Kate Bush. They’ve used at least two of her songs.
Hmmm. Where to begin? And here's the rub: where to end? This might not go so well. I read the excerpt of Peter (played by Kate here)Reich's book in Rolling Stone, several years before this, may have read the book itself shortly thereafter, chronicling his childhood and the efforts of his dad, Wilhelm (Donald)Reich to make it rain for stricken communities, some of which professed faith in and gratitude for Reich's methods and efforts and seeming results. Peter eventually succumbed to mental health issues, apparently as a result of drug use. Reich Sr. was persecuted...I don't think there's any other more appropriate term for it, by the government. Much as Nicola Tesla was tailed, his every discarded jotting on a restaurant napkin dutifully collected and archived, so too were Reich's writings scooped up and filed away. His, though, have been widely discredited by the scientific establishment later, whereas Tesla is prototypically synonymous with mad visionary/genius. I also had a copy of Wilhelm's 'The Mass Psychology of Fascism' in my collection for years and really came to regret finally having passed it on...oh, about two US elections ago. William ('Naked Lunch', Steely Dan)Burroughs was said to have an orgone box, a bed, a writing desk and chair and little else in his longtime room at the "Y" in New York, I think. My sister-in-law, something of a counter-culture celebrity at one time, shepherded Burroughs around Vancouver for a day prior to an appearance at the "avant-garde" gallery she worked with, and took him to the zoo. She also asked in her inimitable rasp if he really hated women. Just because of having shot his wife accidentally in a narcotic fog? I don't know, it's been years since I last tried to read him. I love Kate's Dickensian urchin look in this video, that ginger thatch. 😁 This is the album following 'The Dreaming', which was the first, iirc, recorded at Peter Gabriel's studio and largely utilizing the Fairlight (q.v., heeheehee). I have always found it a more daunting listen and simultaneously more "mature", serious and pointed, though at what, I couldn't pin down. Why would you?
It's a shame that so many geniuses of their time are both discredited by the Scientific establishment and also ruined by the combined efforts of the government and corporate/banking interests.
Thanks so much for your reactions; it was fun watching you check this out. KB has a pretty deep and diverse catalog and, judging from the responses from everybody () I’m sure folks would be interested to see what you think of her other music. [BTW, this was the first time I saw the video. Besides the shock of seeing Kate in Mom Jeans 😉, it was not-surprisingly interesting.]
I like how. it ends with a steam train whistle. A steam train, of course, does create a 'cloud' of steam. Steam trains also have a nostalgic or romantic image and this ties with the regular, relentless, 'driving' beat of some other songs on the Hounds of Love album, particularly the song Hounds of Love itself, Running up that Hill, and Under Ice.
She is also supported by David Gilmour, Peter Gabriel and the German jazz bass player Eberhard Weber, among others. Gilmour appears to have "discovered" her. Gabriel sang with her and Weber played bass in in some songs. Her lyrics are good literature, too.
You should review her album 50 Words for Snow, it's her last album to date apart from that live one she put out, IMHO it's her best work thus far. Nice one Jeff !
She's my musical hero!🎶💚

Also, Peter Reich is gay, so "the sun's coming out/your son's coming out" has a wonderful double meaning.

Peace :)
@@heathermaysloan You're welcome. I'm an expert on all things Kate, so I can answer most questions!
H R Giger dedigned the Alien in Alien Movie RIP
This is a beautiful clip and song......absolutely mesmerising. The whole 'Hounds Of Love' album is brilliant.
Kate Bush is a genius. End of sentence. She can do no wrong.
Re-worked version of the original. A true classic from my youth. Kate Bush has a special place in my musical heart.
Kate's a Great artist (paused watching The Beatles Get Back movie part 3 for this)
That means she’s really great!
@@SightAfterDark Really, really great like you wouldn’t believe
1:25 -- they relax into realizing what a genius and goddess Kate is!
Kate can certainly act and I really remember watching this video in 1985
She is amazing!
Kate Bush is fantastic. She was listening
to her older Brothers Prog albums like
King Crimson and Pink Floyd and later discovered by David Gilmoure.(Pink Floyd)
If you want to listen to an extraordinary
voice i can recomend Mari Boine she's
a Sami and very spiritual.
Check out (Brother Eagle) live in Oslo
Nrk(they dont block).
This music takes you to places you never have been.
You are the best.👌
You are too Rolf. Thanks for the history!
Know one compares to her she in a universe of her own love her
Would love to hear your thoughts on Kate's 'This Woman's Work'. Beautiful and empathetic.
I get teary eyed every time I hear that song.
I can only think of two female artists that I would use the words Genius .
KATE BUSH AND MADONNA !!
Blew all of us away when it came out.
It is Donald!! Yay for you! Canadian with housing close to where I come from. LOVE KATE!!
Thanks for watching Josaphah!
If you really want to experience the magic of this song, is to listen to it near or at the beach early in the morning when the waves crash the shore. Her music is nature. Being that listening to her outside really brings a oneness with the all. A brilliant talent. Iam glad I found her music, so long ago.
This song is just one of a wonderful collection of songs on Hounds of Love album. It's Kate at her best, great song and a video to match.
Much respect to the unknown(?) prop maker who built that "rain machine".
No doubt!
A rain maker...yeah, thats what England needs to most ;-)
😆
My favorite female artist. Thanks, cats.
Thanks for watching!
Supercharged artistic talent. ‘The Hounds of Love’ leaves me speechless (hence the brevity of this comment).
Thanks so much Cynthia; never thought of sampling, but hey there’s an idea!
Cynthia, I have a feeling that a sampling with the ear, may be turned into a physical sample, or is that what you really meant, or am I completely off track?
@@davehagi9883 I should not have used the word sample. I meant listen to the whole song if possible!
@@cynthianavarro4316 I guessed that.....Peace.
Totally agree - only Joni is on a similar level. Both are unique and phenomenal talents!
"You looked too small in that big black car to be a threat to the men in power."
Yet in reality, he did seem a threat to then, they jailed him, and destroyed his work.
Very powerful song.
Thanks for supplying the song info. I was just about to when I spotted your post.
Wow how tragic!
Reich fled Nazi Germany where his books were burned, and came to America where the same happened.
Thanks for the info Edward!
such a sad story. fantastic video clip.
They have a whole chem trail in 1986 with a cloud machine to cover it. Kate Bush, man
Thoughtful. You nailed it.
She produces her own records too. She knows exactly how something should sound. This song was used very successfully in a long sequence in a Handmaids Tale - the video is on you tube, type Handmaids tale Kate Bush. They’ve used at least two of her songs.
Thanks for the info Adrian!
Love Kate Bush!!
You have to listen to the Dreaming. Kate's masterpiece.
This is the album following 'The Dreaming', which was the first, iirc, recorded at Peter Gabriel's studio and largely utilizing the Fairlight (q.v., heeheehee).
Filmed in beautiful Oxfordshire (my county!) and where Kate lives now apparently.
It's Kate Bush. Thank you. End of story!
☺️ thanks for watching Jeff!
Kate has spoken about she knew of the cloudbusting machine which Wilhelm Reich (1895-1957) said he had invented and which he said could make it rain.
Crazy good stuff here love you Guys
This is my daughter's and my song.
How sweet! Thanks for watching David!
I like how. it ends with a steam train whistle.
Great info Thomas, thanks!
You should review her album 50 Words for Snow, it's her last album to date apart from that live one she put out, IMHO it's her best work thus far. Nice one Jeff !
@Baby Hunn That just made my day !
@Baby Hunn she is the best Baby ! Thanks for the link.
Thanks John!
I've been a fan since the 80's. She is awesome and yes that is Donald Sutherland
Woooow ! Lindo🌟
Si!
OK you've got my attention.
Yay!
