She said "hold my tea." She's English. 😉
Maxwell did a great vocal imitation of Kate's performance, but this is her song. She puts her whole heart into every word.
Kate's song was written for a movie, and it's about a man waiting in a hospital for his wife to give birth--and the birth is high risk and both the baby's and his wife's life could be lost. Kate is a woman singing from the vantage point of a man, and she's empathizing with the man who has been rendered powerless. He must stand outside and wait, incapable of doing anything, as his wife now holds the responsibility of saving her life, their child's life, and the man's life by not devastating him. All the man can do is feel agony and worry, realizing that he could lose his wife and expected child and also realizing how much pressure his wife has to do her job, which is to preserve life. Kate's writing is both empathetic and demonstrates that she understands what a man would feel in that situation and also illuminating, helping men to understand the tremendous risks and responsibilities that only women bear. And her musical arrangement and vocal performance convey all these thoughts.
Nothing against Maxwell, but this woman Kate's work is a much greater accomplishment.

Beautifully said. Besides the raw emotion that comes across in the original, there's something that just doesn't feel quite as powerful about a man lamenting how hard it is for him, even while acknowledging the woman having to do the brunt of the work, as opposed to a woman, bearing that burden, and yet still having the love, compassion, and empathy to acknowledge how difficult it is for the man to feel so helpless to bear any part of it for or along with the woman he loves, and the range of emotions involved in those moments.

The other singer has an undeniably powerful and controlled voice, but none of the fragility and incredible resonance that Kate Bush can put on when she pushes her voice, as if a second voice is falling from the sky to resonate with the foreground accents. , as if she embodied several characters.

First time hearing Maxwell's version (don't know him). Kate wins for me because she's singing in various octaves throughout the entire song, always switching it up, and is more powerful at times and much softer at times. She shows much more range and ability with her voice. I was loving Maxwell's version but it just stuck to the same key most of the song and I thought some parts were overkill and took away from the meaning of the song. He did a good version and glad he is introducing Kate Bush to his fans.

It was for a dramatic, life threatening, birth scene in a movie with a predominantly white cast. I also want to say that Kate’s enunciation comes through more clearly in her version than the Maxwell‘s enunciation does for me. I spent most of his version trying to understand what he was saying, until he started using his deep chest voice toward the end, and then came back to his falsetto and I did understand him there in his falsetto as well. But for the most part the emotions don’t really come through for me. The melodic choices, which I understand were very characteristic of R&B back in the late 90s/2000s, they affected the impact that the song and it’s the lyrics and melody were supposed to have. At least on me.

I actually DO feel his version -- especially the LIVE ACOUSTIC he did for MTV. He credits her & it's more of a HOMAGE rather than completely different. And, he DOES get me in "the feels" with chills -- he just adds his own "flavor" with a bit of neo-soul styling (he doesn't overdo & go crazy with the runs over-done) and a bit more percussion/ rhythm. He left the song in it's original key/ register and even style/ tone -- ethereal angelic but with a bit more bottom tone ooomph at end.

Not a contest. An original masterpiece written by Kate and reproduced for a broader audience with Maxwell. I always get the frissons when I listen to Kate’s version and though Maxwell can hit the notes, I do not get the frissons, it sounds disconnected from the meaning. Kate knows what the message of the song intimately and uses her talent to tell her story; it’s all heart ❤️

I’m listening to Maxwells right now as I’m reading this, and I feel like he does tap on the emotions at moments, but then slides in and out of it because he still trying to add his gospel/R&B stylings to keep it different from the original. So the impact isn’t quite as intense as what I feel from Kates version. So he has a nice version which he sings with some emotion, but she has an epic version that she sings with powerful emotions.

This is from the man's perspective, of the helplessness and fear he's feeling that his woman won't survive a difficult child birth. P.S. It has a happy ending, by the smile on the nurses face as she taps him on the shoulder.

Maxwell's clearly a very talented singer, but there's really no comparison. His version is polished and note perfect, Kate's is vulnerable and shaking. His take is somebody that misses somebody in his life that's gone, Kate's take is caring about what somebody else is going through, even though she is the one she should be worrying about. Maxwell sung the way he sings every song, Kate tailored this performance to the nuances of this specific song. There's no question who the winner is.

  • @dalee72

Good choice as the winner because I feel that Kate Bush's voice has more sense of vulnerability and emotions! Kate Bush's character survives at the end of the music video.

The fact that she's a woman singing her perspective gives the song a special meaning... Not to mention the deep video. But personally, Maxwell's version is simply beautiful. And his voice shows his level of talent, very artistic. So it really depends on the perspective.

I'm pretty prejudiced when it comes to this equasion. I am Kate's fan since her debut in 1978. And how she delivered this one, is so outstanding. But I am respecting Maxwell's atempt. He did add something to the emotion, even though that is quite impossible regarding the original. But at the same time he lost me with all his decorations. Yep, the original prevails easily.

Coming at this from the opposite direction; I'd never heard of Maxwell, let alone his version of this song. So I gave it a listen and you know what? Wow he's good. But it reminds me of those recordings made by classical orchestras of pop songs: they hit all the notes perfectly and in all the right places, technically faultless. But they always fail to capture the emotion and depth, and you can't really put a finger on why that is, but they just leave you unmoved.
