An unbelievably beautiful and powerful work of art like nothing else.. A journey as big and intense as the universe.. Surely this must be Kate's Magnum Opus... Thanks for watching! 🥰
It doesn't matter how many times I listen to this suite, I hear something new that I didn't notice before. A true masterpiece which still sounds new today. Glad you loved it
Awesome Ray, I hope the same thing happens with me! Oh yes, a timeless suite of music for sure, didn't even think about that. Thanks so much for watching 🙂

Brandon, the evidence is in your expressions. Kate has drawn you into her spell. 🪄You’re under enchantment. Smitten. Compelled. Head over heels in love.
When my family had a cottage on northern Michigan, I left three CDs there to listen to by my small fire by the lakeside under a carpet of stars: Hounds of Love, Passion by Peter Gabriel and Mickey Hart's Mystery Box. All three are magical CDs and always elevate my mood. Thanks for playing all of Hounds of Love. :)
You're welcome! I think it was apparent how much I connected with it on first listen. So much that I love about music was presented in these 7 songs. Just so special and in a category all its own...💖
Am pretty delighted with your beautiful words of praise for such a mind-blowing 2nd half of Hounds Of Love: Nineth Wave.. This has loooooong been an absolute sacred album to me, for sure! As a Gen X'er, I've lived through many MANY incarnations of music: vibes, trends, etc.. & having fronted rock bands for many years, Grunge & 90's was my souls home. But Kate's been through my soul since I was a tiny child, hearing & seeing Wuthering Heights for the first time in my bedroom with my dinner on my small lap watching music TV. So I NEVER take lightly anyone's opinions of Kate, she's a beloved & untouchable to me lol. As you said of dear Tori (whom ofc i love, too) she was first! 💯.. & the women i'm especially drawn to today, have her running right through them, like: Florence Welsh, & FKA Twigs, to name a couple! Kate's one of those once in a lifetime artists who's not only treasured by today's gens, but beloved by everyone in the know, from Stevie Nicks to Tupac to Lorde, & beyond... & Hounds Of Love expresses musically: exactly why. 2 things came to mind when I heard your feedback.. Watching you without me. To me, her "ghost" seems almost like herself in her deliciousness trying to stay afloat, ASTRO traveling back to her home. Just my thought on it. Hello Earth's monk choir was an existing piece from a gorgian folk song, which was used in 1979's Nosferatu vampire movie. I remember myself, recognizing the piece from there (raddest vamp movie imo). I read somewhere once, that Kate built the song around that piece of music. Anyways, just my 2 cents😊 Keep up the good work I now look forward to watching more vids. Cheers
Hello fellow Gen X'er! I know what you mean about the 90s being such a special time. So happy you enjoyed my thoughts on this masterpiece The Ninth Wave. I can tell that music has completely and deeply enriched your life from early on till now. I feel the same, and this channel is just amplifying it all so much now! Thanks so much for your support and for the wonderful comment 😊
...so happy to see you reacting to this, Brandon! - knew this suite well, but haven't listened to it for a while... and just found myself sobbing through the whole thing again... its so, so good - a true master piece... PS. the helicopter at some point is from the same tape as Pink Floyd's on 'The Wall' - It was David Gilmour, who discovered Kate at the tender age of 16 and helped her to produce a demo tape, which then got accepted by her future record company. Being supported to almost do anything she likes for her first album, she became a shooting star in 1978, topping the British singles chart right away for 4 weeks... the rest is history. Love and adore you, Kate 💖
Hello Jörn! Yes, completely satisfied that I finally chose to do this suite today. I can certainly relate to the tears....what she presents here is so profound, almost beyond words. I had known that Gilmour helped her and I saw them perform together, but cool info about The Wall connection to this album! Thanks so much for stopping by for this masterpiece!!
Me too, my belly was shaking and tears falling, I love how Kate just let her music talk for itself, I know people want to see more of her but Im personally glad she never doesn't do chat shows etc...she special, I met her once, she was kind, sweet and had time for me, not at all glitzy.
@@retroreactions.... In fact, it's the first album I bought with money from my first salary. 2 musical discoveries changed my vision of music: Kate Bush with this album, and Mike Oldfield with his 70's albums (Tubular Bells, Hergest Ridge, Ommadawn, Incantations).
Definitely one of the greatest works of music ever IMHO, a masterpiece as is the entire album! And Dream Of Sheep and Hello Earth often causes tears to well up and I'm not exactly sure why, it's like a cocktail of mixed emotions, just the shear beauty combined with the innocence and sadness and desire for peace, the loneliness, and it's probably triggering memories of both good times and bad times, . . .maybe even the pain that I so desperately want to create some music that is this moving, creative, and grand but knowing I likely never will . . . .
So I see we have the same response to songs 6 and 11 😌 You explained it so exquisitely. This suite has elements that I utilized in my own songs back in the day and it's SO inspiring. That's 1 big reason of several as to why I connected so deeply with these songs...
@@retroreactions.... And both songs use some of the the same or at least similar content. I'd probably need to put both tracks in a DAW so I could line up the similar parts to analyze but, I'm fine with just enjoying the listen without getting too technical about the compositional aspects! ;-)

Seriously though, I've enjoyed the Mistress of Weird since finding "The Dreaming" on cassette in the early 80's. Her creativity deserves the redux it is getting!
It takes courage to listen to this suite. I'm impressed you did it. Thankfully, you reaped the rewards that The Ninth Wave has to offer. Is this Kate Bush at her most creative whilst retaining accessibility? I think so. Shout out to Del Palmer, Kate's long-time intimate friend and collaborator who sadly passed away a few months ago.
For sure. I knew it would be amazing, but didn't quite expect all that depth and intensity! I think I did pretty well in taking so much of it in...just brilliant and beautiful. RIP Del...they certainly both were better people for knowing each other personally and professionally.....Thanks so much Gill....🙂
Aww... I did not know he passed away :-( He was always so loyal to Kate's art, even when they split. I never read anything, but gathered alot of The Red Shoes Era was about him
If I remember this was recorded on her 5th album "Hounds of Love" great work overall, it's always a discovery again, even if I already listened to it before. This music is very experimental even if she flirts with pop music, Kate touches every kind of deep styles, electronics to folk and more. You can hear how much she cared about every little aspect of the instrumental track as well as every voices and lyrics aspects. She simply recorded this work like an audio movie, you can literally see the music. Surprises everywhere. 😎🎶🔉Always a pleasure to re-listen again this masterpiece. Kate Bush had always a real charisma in her voice. It is probably one of her more achieved work. Wonderful!
Yes, the diversity in just this suite is insane! It completely shows that this was a labor of love and I know it took quite a while to complete rightfully so. See the music...YES. Glad you love and appreciate this as much as I do now...
This has just become my favorite reaction to the suite. Just beautiful! I love the sound of the Morse code in Watching You Without Me (wasn’t mentioned so wasn’t sure if you picked up on it. Also some of my favorite lyrics Under Ice - Silver heels (ice skates), spitting, spitting snow.
Hello Ollie! So flattering and rewarding to hear that wonderful compliment!! I knew going in that this was a very special piece of music, so I tried my best to do it justice with a first reaction. Glad you liked 😊 I'm pretty sure I missed the morse code, so I will have to listen again for that. What perfect music, and I know she has so much more!! Peace and blessings...
It's tough to hear, and so I say with love and kindness , that pain, heartbreak, nightmare we all go through also comes with spiritual growth and blessings. I believe at the end of Hello Earth as she emerges from this nightmare she whispers " Deeper and Deeper still, in the darkest depths, there is a light " Thank you for the great and intelligent reaction.
I simply adore the last three songs. In The Morning Fog is so lovely but way too short. I always wished it was longer, so I would put the needle back and listen to it 2 or 3 times in a row. Anyone else do that as well? I hope so.
I agree The Morning Fog is far too short. I wish she built it into a huge euphoric climax. Probably why it's my least fav on the album but it's still a lovely song.
Love how you suddenly changed the background to "beautiful light", thanks for that, perfect for the last song. "Hello Earth" is my very favorite from the ninth wave. I imagine her "slowly fading" from life and to me it's like "her soul her spiritual self is rising" and becoming "one with the universe" (temporarily) and she is looking down at earth seeing it from afar and the "storms' she is warning them to "head for home". Then the next (and last) song "Morning fog", she is rescued and she sings of how grateful she is to "be alive" she 'kisses the ground" and tells her family and loved one "how much she loves them". Beautiful and what a story Kate told us, so creative, a genius..
Thanks for acknowledging the backdrops. This epic piece could not just have a single or simple backdrop for my vid! Hello Earth is so special (as you may have seen, that one had me crying the most!) Your analysis/interpretation of songs 11 & 12 are simply perfect! Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and for watching today 😌
Interesting tidbit of information: the inquisitor's voice is actually Kate as well, pitched down... i guess recorded at higher tape speed and then slowed down.
Aw, thank you SO much Lynnette for that amazing gift!! So kind of you. And those kind words are another amazing gift. It's so rewarding to hear that you enjoy my channel and my wide taste in music. You can see I'm passionate about music, and this channel is very rewarding in multiple ways. I appreciate all your support! Peace, love and blessings to you 😊 💙
When I first listened to it with 16 when it came out I was very tired, fell asleep and woke up to the sound collage of Waking The Witch - I was so terrified, that I had to stop the record and only could continue half an hour later. Then came this soft part and brought me back on track again :D Jig Of Life is still one of my fav Kate songs together with Get Out Of My House - you really have to do that one.
Congratulations for finding one of the most valorable gems of music. i found it 39 years ago when i was 13 and until today i have never heard anything comparable. i write this while you are experiencing Hello Earth and i am curious about your face at the end of the song....
Incredible. Just that. There are references to some of Kate's favorite horror fils on this album, too - Under Ice was inspired by Omen II, there's a section in Hello Earth which features in Klaus Kinsky's Nosferatu and, of course, there's the sample from the trully brilliant Night of the Demon opening Hounds of Love. Incredible.
Hello. I love that Kate includes dark (even horror) elements in her music, yet can weave them seamlessly with joyous, soothing and lively music as shown here. She's fearless and in her own special musical lane. Thanks for watching!
Well Brandon. You are on Fire! this week and featuring one of the most innovative pieces of 70s music from the goddess that is Kate Bush has taken us into a realm that is above description. Having said that you did a marvellous job in describing this piece of music. Well done my friend - well done. All the very best. Dave✅✅
Thank you so much Dave! Realm above description is completely accurate. You know I tried hard for this one, I knew it was such a special suite of music, but boy did she make it easy to completely draw me into this world.... I appreciate your comments so much..
I borrowed Hounds of Love because a friend said it was wonderful. I had heard and liked Running Up That Hill but was not expecting transformative art like the Ninth Wave. You must wake up!
You definitely need to feature Kate more often. She has such a unique voice! I haven’t listened to this album in years….great to hear this again. 😊 I’m still petitioning for “The Man With the Child in his Eyes”. It’s one of those songs that I’ve loved for years….the only downside is that it’s way too short. I watched part 1, but waited to comment after part 2. What will it take to see the Epic Quadruple Platinum Award!! Lol
Yes! I mean this fully lived up to my preconceived notions and beyond... Glad you revisited it with me today. Thanks for the reminder on "Eyes". So much Kate to go! Someone mentioned that the "Aerial" album from 2005 was amazing in case you haven't heard it. I think triple platinum is my top limit, or so I think right now haha... I supposed if a song ever makes me pass out it will earn the quadruple platinum.....and that would be a really longggg reaction 🤣 Happy Wednesday bud...an amazing soulful voice on the menu for tomorrow!
Hello Earth is my favourite, a real masterpiece, to call it a song seems so wrong, it's much much more, it's like a movie soundtrack, an ethereal almost religious experience. I really think that Kate Bush will become more famous after her death, studied and appreciated as a musical genius of her time, like Mozart and Beethoven. Remember she doesn't just write and sing her songs, she also has a massive input regards arranging and producing them.
Hi Brandon and thanks very much for reacting to the legendary 'Ninth Wave.' The album it is taken from 'Hounds of Love' (1985) is one of the all time truly great albums, and 'The Ninth Wave' is one of the most extraordinary, flawless pieces of "popular" music ever recorded. Kate does a live version of this on her live "Before The Dawn" album which is a live recording of songs from her 'Before The Dawn' concerts which was the first set of live concerts she had performed in 35 years(!). Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin fame had attended those concerts and some years later described his experience on Instagram and wrote very enthusiastically about her "genius." Band members of Metallica have spoken on several occasions about how Kate Bush was one of the people they were listening to while they were recording 'Masters of Puppets.' Given that 'Masters..' was recorded between Sept and Dec 1985 and 'Hounds...' was released on 16th Sept 1985, it is fairly certain that it was 'Hounds of Love' and 'The Ninth Wave' that they were listening to (although one can easily imagine them also listening to 'The Dreaming' 1982 or 'Never For Ever' 1980). This album and 'The Ninth Wave' rightly been eulogised and revered ever since it was released. That Kate Bush produced it as well as everything else she does this album defies all logic. The albums confirms that yes, she is one of the all time great vocalists with one of the all time great voices, and yes she is an all time great song writer, and yes she is an all time great producer, and yes she is an all time great music visionary ... but beyond all of that it doesn't just impress you, but it touches you in a very deep manner and places her firmly among the immortals. That the same person performed the vocals on 'And Dream of Sheep' and also the demonic witchfinder in 'Waking the Witch' is mind blowing. And in that regard I smiled at your reaction to her growl. To get the full blown Kate Bush growl I think you will get a kick out of: "Breathing" (the album audio version) her nuclear war finale to 'Never For Ever' 'Pull Out The Pin' - a Vietnam war song from the perspective of a North Vietnamese fighter tracking down a US soldier 'Houdini' - a the widow of Harry Houdini attending séance 'Night of the Swallow' - a song about smugglers and the disintegration of a human relationship 'Get Out of my House' - inspired by the Stephen King book 'The Shining' 'You Want Alchemy' - about bees (yes, about bees) and how they can turn roses into gold as they make honey 'Aerial' - the closing number and title track to her 2005 double album And then there is the quite remarkable 'Rocket's Tail' featuring David Gilmour of 'Pink Floyd' fame and is one of those songs that only Kate Bush would even attempt, let alone succeed in achieving as she uproariously and wonderful does on that song. Thanks again I really enjoyed these two videos on 'The Ninth Wave' very much indeed.
Hello Tommy! Thanks so much for watching and for the wonderful comments 🙂 It's great to read about other huge legends being inspired by her music. I'm sure the list is long... I've added all your suggestions to my list. So glad you enjoyed my reactions to this masterpiece suite!
Yes, thanks for that Brandon, very enjoyable, glad you liked it too, I promise you it only gets better and better, and deserves all the accolades, it is a masterpiece. It still transports me back to the day it landed, I was at Uni at the time, ran down to my record shop and bought it and played it over and over all day as people dropped in. I had a big room but by mid-afternoon my memory is of people hanging off every available surface, there were literally dozens, it was a listening party, I was sitting on the floor industrially rolling 'cigarettes-de-la-hote' (I think I was using the largest block of resin I've ever held in my hand, I came prepared, and it was acceptable in the 80s...) using the album cover to roll on of course, with my headphones on! How sociable of me. I was so stoned that at one point I thought it was actually me under the ice... Anyway, as you might imagine, it went down well with everyone, Kate was the coolest thing on the planet that day, it did feel like everything she had done before had been leading up to this point, and there still is nothing quite like it 40 years later and countless listens. I know she performed a version of this in her 2014 stage show and the video for And Dream Of Sheep which was made for that show is worth a check (as a 'new vocal') but on the whole I'm glad there was never any other video material so our imaginations could go wild. Tbh a lot of the story you read wasn't generally understood for years, certainly it wasn't chez moi all those years ago, there was a lot of puzzlement that day, bafflement even, there was a lot of mystery to it, but it makes so much sense once laid out, I've learned so much of that since watching reaction videos here recently... maybe I'm just slow on the uptake 🙂
Hello Sophia! You're very welcome. Wow thanks for sharing that most vivid and epic memory from back then. I live to hear stories like that from my viewers! I did see several comments on another site about that 2014 show, so of course I will have to search it out 🙂 Yes, I definitely had the luxury of reading a full and thought out description/interpretation of the story in 2024 before listening...something you couldn't have had in 1985. I was 10 years old at that time and hugely invested in music already, but I'm glad I didn't hear this back then because it would have had nowhere near the same impact as now, after living so much life and experiencing such a musical journey... Thanks for stopping by and for the wonderful comments!!
@@retroreactions.... So much gained in that time, not just the access to hearing the music, but also as you say interpretations, lyrics, etc, information that wasn't available, it's difficult to appreciate. We had to go with what we had, the music, a couple of music mags, and word of mouth down the pub. The very idea of sharing reactions instantly with someone over the pond from my perch in Edinburgh would have been... well, my mind was already pretty blown that day, I think I said... anyway, over and out, it's late here 🙂

Interesting tidbit of information: the inquisitor's voice is actually Kate as well, pitched down... i guess recorded at higher tape speed and then slowed down.
one of the few perfect albums
I just absolutely love how you get into her songs! Lyrics and musical layers...sigh
Thank you so much for doing this!!!
You're very welcome, thanks for watching! 💙
Thank you for sharing. I just love what you do and your taste in music.
Aw, thank you SO much Lynnette for that amazing gift!! So kind of you. And those kind words are another amazing gift. It's so rewarding to hear that you enjoy my channel and my wide taste in music. @@retroreactions.... You are most welcome 🤗 I love meeting kindred music people 😁

OK if you enjoyed that, then I highly recommend the second disc of Aerial. It's a suite as well. And equally as beautiful.
Thank you for your heartfelt and intelligent reaction to this masterwork.
Thanks Michael! Agree 100%. Hmmm, let me go look.... do you mean all the tears that are flowing lol, or me being overwhelmed with emotion? 🙂
@@retroreactions.... I was curious if i am the only guy who can´t stop the tears while i´m hearing this song...🤭
Incredible.
@@retroreactions.... My pleasure. I appreciate and admire the work you do
Beautiful reactions, thank you ❤
You're welcome! Thank you so much for watching and for the compliment❣
I borrowed Hounds of Love because a friend said it was wonderful. I had heard and liked Running Up That Hill but was not expecting transformative art like the Ninth Wave.
You must wake up!
She doesn't pass, she is rescued in the morning fog and has a fresh outlook.

Welcome down the kate rabbit hole she's wonderful
Hi Brandon and thanks very much for reacting to the legendary 'Ninth Wave.' The album it is taken from 'Hounds of Love' (1985) is one of the all time truly great albums, and 'The Ninth Wave' is one of the most extraordinary, flawless pieces of "popular" music ever recorded. Kate does a live version of this on her live "Before The Dawn" album which is a live recording of songs from her 'Before The Dawn' concerts which was the first set of live concerts she had performed in 35 years(!). Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin fame had attended those concerts and some years later described his experience on Instagram and wrote very enthusiastically about her "genius."
Band members of Metallica have spoken on several occasions about how Kate Bush was one of the people they were listening to while they were recording 'Masters of Puppets.' Given that 'Masters..' was recorded between Sept and Dec 1985 and 'Hounds...' was released on 16th Sept 1985, it is fairly certain that it was 'Hounds of Love' and 'The Ninth Wave' that they were listening to (although one can easily imagine them also listening to 'The Dreaming' 1982 or 'Never For Ever' 1980).
To get the full blown Kate Bush growl I think you will get a kick out of:
"Breathing" (the album audio version) her nuclear war finale to 'Never For Ever'
'Pull Out The Pin' - a Vietnam war song from the perspective of a North Vietnamese fighter tracking down a US soldier
'Houdini' - a the widow of Harry Houdini attending séance
'Night of the Swallow' - a song about smugglers and the disintegration of a human relationship
'Get Out of my House' - inspired by the Stephen King book 'The Shining'
'You Want Alchemy' - about bees (yes, about bees) and how they can turn roses into gold as they make honey
'Aerial' - the closing number and title track to her 2005 double album
And then there is the quite remarkable 'Rocket's Tail' featuring David Gilmour of 'Pink Floyd' fame and is one of those songs that only Kate Bush would even attempt, let alone succeed in achieving as she uproariously and wonderful does on that song.
That 'electronic surprise' is a morse code S.O.S. dit dit dit dah dah dah dit dit dit
The very idea of sharing reactions instantly with someone over the pond from my perch in Edinburgh would have been... well, my mind was already pretty blown that day, I think I said... anyway, over and out, it's late here 🙂
Its a shame that 100 million people recently listened to Running up that Hill but none of them appeared to want to explore further.
You seem to be getting later Brandon, or do you not put your clocks forward in the Spring like us over here in UK?
Yes, just my schedule. I really need to improve on that. Thanks for the feedback my friend..
