2021 Toyota Tacoma Review - Old School, Truck Fun (at a Cost)

- The 2021 Tacoma is a segment leader in sales, however, behind the wheel, many argue that the Colorado, Ranger, Ridgeline and the Gladiator have a leg up. Is that true, though? Better yet, does that matter? Watch my full length video with both transmissions to find out.

ADDITIONALLY, I said that manual models do not get a hill hold feature, however, it appears that some TRD Sport owners say that their truck have it but Off-road owners and Pro owners say that their trucks do not have it!

Big thanks to Royal South Toyota in Bloomington, Indiana, for loaning me the Tacomas used in the video!

I have a 2008 Taco with 257,000 mi. and it runs like a champ. No replacement parts yet. No fluid leaks. I can't wait to get a new one as I just bought a Honda passport. I am just amazed at how Toyota builds such reliable vehicles.
yep, my 2009 trd has 305,000 still runs great. No replacement parts either....the older 4.0 may be the best.
Informative and entertaining video man! Great job!
I love my overprice taco 21 4x4 sport army green ! As my first manual it was surprisingly easy to learn and very fun! I don’t regret it one bit
I test drove the one I waited 6 months for yesterday. Biggest let down. I’ve been driving a 1986 M/t Toyota pickup for years. That transmission feels 100% better than the 2022. WTF happened with Toyota. Is there no quality control in Mexico OR WHAT. clanky clunky and rattling is the way I can describe it. And cheap as hell. Mechanic at dealership is supposed to check it out. No way in hell can I drive a truck that sounds and feels like that one. Very upset about it. Sad thing is what the hell somewhat affordable truck is there that 1/2 way decent
I cant wait to get my TRD off-road!
Informative review! Good job
Thank you!
You fooled me into thinking that I'm watching a high-budget auto review. Subscribed.
That's the goal, thank you!
Love my overpriced 2021 Tacoma !
lol same.. i almost got the 2021 bronco sport.. until i saw a new one being flat bed back to the stealership and i was gone!!!
Sell it for more than you bought it
Great review of differences in trims. I love my daily driver 2020 TRD Off-road 6MT.
Do you have noise from the transmission?
@@mikebb9769 not that I’ve noticed
@@TerryOwensBansheePA I picked mine up yesterday. I was hesitant from others saying they’ve heard noises. Anyway so far so good
Hello Haley! Happy new year and Merry Christmas! Best wishes in you life and stay healthy :)
Dope review as always mate!
Thank you, I am not clear on who Haley is but I wish you a merry Christmas and happy new years as well!
@@Realistick Sorry pal, somehow thought your name was Haley, my bad. And thanks!
That's alright, it's Tyler!

Off road tacoma manual transmission with 5 foot cab is awesome regeneration 2021 tacoma truck…👌🏻✅
Im subbing because you said “...Christmas or whatever you celebrate.” , and “holy shit”. Well done.
You don’t get a Tacoma because it’s the fastest or best performing or it’s the most technologically advanced. You get it because it’s a fantastic off roader and in 15 years and 300k miles, that Tacoma will still be driving as smooth as it was when you bought it, when the Colorado or the canyon or the ranger or the Jeep are in the junk yard
My feels and sounds like a shit can. Worst m/t I ever drove. Big let down
@@mikebb9769 I’ve never driven manual before. I wanted to learn but I’ve never had access to one to learn. As for me, I’d be coming from a corolla so anything is pretty much an improvement on all aspects except reliability
@@swimmer8585 I don’t doubt it’s reliability. I don’t think anyway but it is a horrible transmission. Loud and very cheap feeling for a 40k+ truck
@@mikebb9769 Its not a performance truck. Its an old school truck you buy for its reliability. I'm hopefully gonnna pick one of these up or a 4runner when the price of cars goes down
@@swimmer8585 I know exactly what it is. Ive driven many M/T trucks in my life time. I not a kid. The transmission feels/sounds like shit. Do yourself a favor. Buy a 4runner. At least they are made in Japan and there is quality control. My came from Mexico and it is garbage.
The Sport and all the non-OR trims apparently have a hill holder. Can it be disabled?
I don't remember seeing a button to disable it so my guess is that it does not disable unless you let it time out
Maybe I am the wrong person to answer this I've had 12 toyota trucks but I have seen all the midsized trucks in it's class and I still believe it's the best looking truck on the road and I have never had any of my trucks in the shop for anything except oil changes no warning lights on the dash in my opinion they are reliable
That's definitely one of the reasons why I want to buy one of these!
When do you think the stick will go away? 2022 or 2023, if the next model doesn’t carry?
I think it will probably be 2024 and I don't think it will be kept around then. I think it will probably stay around until then though!
Love that jacket LOL
It lights up too but I didn't want to distract any viewers lmao
😂😂
Who cares, the hood scoop looks good. And the manaul transmission is what keeps half of us around
your best video is honda crv 2003
I was able to get my 2020 trd o/r in december of 2019 for 37. I feel like i stole it now lol
Wow. I'd buy the SR5 with a manual transmission right away. Simple no nonsense truck.
Think again
Run ECT and it makes shifting much better. Most people that own these use that religiously.
Or buy a real transmission with the 6sp manual
I love my 21 Tacoma off road, but 0-60 has never factored into my buying the last 3 tacomas. Their throttle management is garbage. I usually drive in sport mode.
It is a truck so I would not expect high performance from 0-60 mph. Anything that is less than 9 second is already fast enough.
The main issue in the powertrain is not the 0 to 60, it's the power band. You have to be higher in the rev range to tap into the power, which is less than ideal when under load.
He’s so cute
Team MT cars >>> 💯💯💯
Ordered an off road last week. Hopefully it will last.
Of course it will last. Best reliability, period!!!
My OR has treated me well so far
I ordered and off road manual Feb 2nd. Up to 5 month wait. 🤯
@@bradbutler4213
I ordered mine 12/14. It’s supposed to go to build this week. Hopefully 🙏.
Get it yet?? I got my black 2021 off road last week!!! Already at 300 miles
People buy the Tacoma for dependability and reliability not for power. I will go with the manual.
I agree, but the powerband on the 3.5 is more annoying than that of the old 4.0 so it has to be mentioned.
Some people nitpick like old nags gave my son my original 04 tacoma excellent condition for a 2021 no vehicle is perfect but I wouldn't have any other truck
Some people do nitpick, others critique where necessary and give credit where credit is due
Trying to get an idea of when you’re sitting inside how tall are you ?
My bad, I usually put that in the video, I must have edited that out, i'm 6 foot 3!
messy roommates 😂
👀not naming any names
@@Realistick hhhmmmm 👀👀😂
The manual does have hill start assist...
Toyota says otherwise, I did some more research, some folks say that the TRD Sport does have it but the Off Road and Pro do not have it. Do you have a TRD Sport?
Only the Sport has it, also it came on the 2016-2017 SR 4 Cylinder 5 speeds but that configuration was discontinued after 2017.
Need a Chevy Colorado review!
pfffffff
Junk
I hate to say this but the ranger is a better truck. Also everything in this segment is less competitive overall than Ram and F150s. Its not even bating fullsize trucks in MPG. You gotta really want some adventure to pay the asking price for these. That said I LOVE the exterior of the current tacoma but other than that everything else is hard to justify.
Reliability is unsurpassed with Toyota.
No offense but you sound like a car guy reluctantly reviewing a truck. 0-60? who cares?, it's a TRUCK not a sports car. It's like knocking a porsche because it can't haul sheets of lumber.
A ton of truck guys care about acceleration, including myself, considering I own a tacoma. It's obviously not the most important thing here and i never alluded to that. However, It's about the only way for me to legally and feasibly give people a number in regard to acceleration.
step down to the sport.
Comments about on road suspension on an Off Road trim level seems pointless. Don't buy the Off Road trim if you want better road handling, buy a TRD Sport instead. Also, replace the brakes if you don't like them... This truck is infinitely customizable for exactly what you're looking to achieve with it. Buy it for reliability and value. Also, 99% of humanity is shorter than the reviewer. They are building the truck for the most likely scenarios, not the outliers.
Ah yes because the people that buy the trd offroad don't drive them on road most of the time. And yeah let's assume people that buy these are actually going to do a disc swap, that's a given. Hell, there's a modification for every shortcoming so there's nothing wrong with the tacoma...
I own a 2nd gen tacoma (bought last year after failing to secure a new one), I'm sure you own one too, but I review cars/trucks to try to help people who don't own one. Someone my height or over 6 foot might care to know about the interesting driving position. People do care about brakes, and suspension feel in all models. Especially since a vast majority of people don't actually modify their trucks. It would also come off heavily biased, which I feel is the case with a lot of reviews.
@@Realistick yeah this guy is weird. I bought a TRD OR because there's so much construction and potholes where I live. Having a stiff suspension like the sport would defeat the main purpose of me getting a truck. I could've kept my sports car, but it's stiff suspension was undrivable where I live.
Also, I don't want to buy a vehicle and immediately start changing stuff out. I mean yeah it's nice to have that option and if the brakes really annoyed me I would swap em, but I don't pay $45k for a vehicle and expect to start changing parts out.
