  • In this episode we take the best looking Toyota Tacoma trim, the Limited Nightshade Edition, into the mountains to how capable this urban-targeted 4x4 truck really is. Can Ryan make it to the trailhead and back or will he be spending the night digging the Toyota Tacoma out of the snow?

Granted it was a used truck but look what a 5 year old truck costs now. We paid $76,000 for our new home in 1982. Some trucks costs that much now. Homes are a little higher too though lol.

      I work as a Toyota mechanic and the truck owners are the most meticulous and picky customers of the bunch. I once did PDI on a special order TRD pro Tundra, plus the installation of Duratrac tires and a levelling kit. The owner comes back the next day and complains about the ride quality. I was able to fix it by lowering the tire pressure from spec. He comes back a week after because there was an imperfection on some trim piece which me or my managers could not find. Then he criticized us because of the water marks left from washing his truck after service.

Since my last vehicle was a Hummer H1, I was concerned that I was making too big a sacrifice for comfort over utility. However, since I now have a bad back, it was a sacrifice I had to make. You've reassured me I can still drive across the farmer's hayfield to get to my deer stand, and I can also drive down a paved road and hit a pothole without my spine vibrating out of my body (like it did with the H1). The lack of supply and demand must be really pushing up the price? I don’t know, for 2021 I don’t think I’d shell that kind of coin now for the lack of features the Night Shade offers. Glad I got my taco when I did. For that price you’d think they’d equip it with at least the TRD Off Road options w/CCont.

      uhm, not really. because what he explains is a front locking differential.
      E:
      4-Auto is RWD until there is slip, it then >automatically< engages 4-wheel drive as long as needed
      4-High is just that, 4-wheel drive, power at all wheels at all times
      4-Low is lower rev-range for better power distribution to the road, i.e. you're stuck, crawling, etc.

You really have to dig out the snow and make sure the tires are in good contact with the traction board. Just so you know even though the tacoma doesn't have a rear locker it still applies the brakes to the spinning wheels, meaning that it's the same as having lockers in this particular scenario. Obviously for rock crawling you have to spin the wheel for it to engage so it might not be ideal but it's basically like having lockers. It does this front and back and yes it's not as good as lockers but it still does the job.

    Right tires makes all the difference. Got my '17 Taco stuck in my driveway in 8" of wet snow. About A week after i bought it. Pulled it out with my '01 Taco. Goodyears vs Cooper STT Pros. Those pros will go anywhere. Never had a problem again after i put them on the '17.

    I bought a 23 Tacoma TRD Off Road, double cab with the Premium and Technology plugs and a 6’ bed on 2/29/24.
    It was the dealerships loaner pickup and had only 6K miles. The dealership added running boards and a hard Tri-Fold tonneau cover.
    During the first week of ownership I installed a K&N cold air intake, window vents and mud flaps.
    The Only thing I hate is the black factory leather interior. So I contacted Katzkin and had them make me TRD Red Leather seat covers with black trim and stitching. After Katzkin removed the black leather and installed the Red Leather, I sold the black leather seat covers to a friend who owns a 23 with grey cloth interior. Now he’s happy with the Black Leather and I’m happy with the TRD Red Leather.
    I’ve also added some TRD RED trim pieces to the interior.
    Next will be a FlowMaster FlowFX “turn down exhaust system.
    After that I’ll drive to Bonners Ferry, Idaho to have an Overland Torque Tune downloaded into the computer so that the torque begins at 2K RPM, instead of 3,500 RPM. This will also Stop the transmission from “hunting” for the right gears.
    Once this is completed I’m having my White Tacoma 2 toned in Barcelona Red metallic that follows the body lines on the lower sections of the exterior body panels.
    I think that Bronze wheels would look great after the 2 tone is completed.
    When the factory tires need replacing, I’ll go with the Faulken Wildpeaks.
    There’s a Forest Road that goes from Malaga to Ellensburg that a few of us will drive over this summer.
    Ryan, what road do we take from Ellensburg to I believe North Bend? The friend that I’m selling my black leather to wants to take that road from his place to Ellensburg and then we’ll go over Blewitt pass to hit some roads up and around the ski resort, as there are some good fishing spots up there.
    There will be 4 of us guys who own TRDs that want to have a weekend of 4 wheeling, fishing and camping.

    I have a Limited Tacoma with some Wrangler Duratracs and it's a mountain goat in the snow, I've never been stuck. In most cases a true 4wd system with high and low range is all that one needs. Might have been more beneficial to put the traction boards under the front wheels since that is where all the weight is.

    Love the look of the truck, but I would have it sitting on BFG KO2 tires before I even picked it up at the dealership. (As I did with my current TRD Sport)
    Thanks for taking us along on the review, helps my decision making my next '22 Tacoma.

      Same. I'm getting a TRD Sport in a little over a month and am setting it up with Falken Wildpeaks on TRD Pro bronze wheels right away. I think with capable tires the Tacomas are much harder to get stuck. I grew up in Buffalo, New York and drove cars with rear wheel drive most of my younger years without issue. Even when I moved to a VW GTI, I still never had problems.

    I think when you placed the traction boards (or MaxxTrax) the spiked side is toward the pavement so the spikes can grip the ground for better traction.

    4H on any vehicle can be used as standard and on any road surface, that’s why is called high, motorway too when it’s raining for example,it gives you more secure handling, 4L and 4L lock is where front and rear diffs are locked and inner and outer wheels will rotate with the same speed , only should be used on gravel and mud and snow. 👍❄️🚗

    • @nicolec7290
      @nicolec7290 2 роки тому

      Not sure that is true

    • @michaelbabak
      @michaelbabak 2 роки тому

      Yes you can use 4H on all surfaces at any speed and 4L is for slow speeds because it reduces your final drive ratio. The diffs don’t lock in 4L. Only TRD offroad and pro come standard with locking diffs. You can lock your diffs in 4H in those models as well though.

    I don't think the traction control turns off on low range, but instead the stability control turns off. All wheels were turning very well at low range so crawl control or rear locker wouldn't have added much. Even from the video can see that the traction control was still working. If about to get badly stuck, one thing that could also do, is to drop the tire pressure a little. It makes it easier for the tire to bite. But great video!

    I have the 2020 TRD Sport and live in a city with serious winters. The first thing I bought as an accessory was a set of Winter tires with a 3PMSF - three-peak mountain snowflake - symbol. As a matter of fact all my previous vehicles (which were cars) had this equipment as a minimum. Taking a truck with all season tires, with an empty box, up a ridge mountain road, with a foot of snow almost nullifies the 4x4 option. If you didn't have the shovel and traction boards you would qualify for Sr. amateur status. As of now it's Jr. ranking for you.

    Enjoyed watching your video. I own a 2020 SR5, 4WD, double cab, 6ft bed. I too would have been on my edge going where you went in that snow. That 16 " bottom clearance filled up quickly as that snow got deeper. Maybe different tires would of done better. But overall,, you got freed up and you were able to come back down the mountain. I'd still give it high marks.
