Finally a honest review from an owner’s perspective. This truck will always be highly sought after for it’s simplicity and reliability and capability. No turbo, no hybrid, no plug in.
My dad has had his 2020 tacoma for 3 years putting 110k miles on it and passed it down to me and neither of us had had any issues with it, easily one of the most reliable and well aging trucks on the market
Your dad gave you a blessing most men don't receive. It builds character for a young man to save up working to buy his own car. Don't lose out on that lesson. Work hard and pay him back.
@@alexanderbarrera9140 it is a blessin, and my only responsibilities for now as a 15 year old is getting good grades, and work as hard as i can in everything i do.
@alexanderbarrera9140 I was going to say, lucky af, at the same time I'm more than likely twice the man from earning these things myself. Like you said, it builds an insane amount of character earning and buying your first pos vehicle.
Speak for yourself. Many of us hand really bad experiences owning a 3rd gen Tacoma. It isn't nicknamed the "turd gen" for no reason. It was rated least reliable midsize truck for at least the first 3 years it was out for a reason. Howling diffs, rear diff failures, oil leaks, engine failures, high pressure fuel pump failures at low mileage, electrical issues, crooked beds, front diff vibration that was an issue that was never addressed in the 2nd gen Taco, etc.
I traded in my old Nissan Frontier in 2016 for my Tacoma TRD. Best decision going to Toyota I've ever made. In all these years I've only had to do regularly scheduled routine maintenance, and the biggest out of pocket expense was buying a new battery after 6 years, and new tires. Gas mileage is great, between 19 - 23 MPG consistently and 3 factory recalls, one a probable loose bolt in the rear differential, frame needed to be recoated and the biggest one was when ONE owner complained his Tacoma would "leak" in the rain. They determined it was a defect in the gasket for the third brake light. The recall was that they completely removed my interior, even though I had NO LEAKS, replaced the third light gasket then completely cleaned, and disinfected the interior, and put it all back together like it was never disassembled!
I bought my Tacoma (TRD Off Road double cab) new January 2019. I love this truck- very solid…I have just under 250k miles , many in 4WD. Absolutely zero issues other than routine maintenance- I have changed my oil every 4500-4900 miles (all at my dealership). I still have not replaced the rear (drum) brakes!
@@gsdlvr123 that’s awesome!! I used to drive around 40K/year but since I’ve purchased my Tacoma it’s really scaled back. I have a ‘21 with just under 15K 😅. Idk what’s worse for vehicles, time or idleness, but I’d sure like to get to 250K!
@@Andrew_Quintero sitting idle is rough, but 10-12 k miles a year is great. My wife doesn’t work and she puts very little miles on her vehicles. Her current daily driver is a 22 TRD Pro 4 Runner, lime Rush. I drive a lot as our property is far away from my main office and we take my truck when we visit our kids. We are now empty nesters and I’m going to retire soon, we own a horse farm and these vehicles are terrific to get around our property. Good luck.
I just came home with a brand new 2023 Tacoma TRD 4 Door 4x4 Long bed 3 days ago. This is my first brand new off the Lot truck I've ever bought. It had 8 miles on it. Man I love this truck. This things got everything and it's gonna take me a month to figure out what all these buttons and knobs do. I scooped it up because I didn't want a 2024 turbo 4 cylinder.
I have a 2021 TRD 4X4 Off Road that I bought new, and I still have not figured out all the buttons, I remember that after the first year the dealer told me that if I did not buy the remote start feature (monthly fee) that it would automatically be turned off. Well it is 2023 now and I did not pay for that, and it still works, I live in a cold climate state so remote start is great. Do not buy that feature because it will still work, at least mine does.
@@rayberger2694 I have the Toyota App and it lets you remote start with that. Plus, I learned ( from UA-cam) how to Remote Start my Truck with the key fob. You hit the Lock button twice quickly until the truck Barks twice, then hold it down a 3rd time until you see all the truck lights start blinking and then it starts up
@@Jeff-fc3tw I spend a month up in northern Idaho when I was a young man, A place called Bonners Ferry. My friend took me skiing up there, Lots of Snow, What is funny is that back then I had a 1982 Toyota 4X4 A yellow one with locking hubs. I wish I still had that truck.
Just purchased the last year of the 3rd Gen Taco's. Glad I got the last one before the 2024 update. All the kink problems should be gone hence its the last year. I am happy to be apart of the Taco gang !! (2023 TRD OFF-ROAD TACO)
I have a 2019 TRD Sport with manual transmission. I purchased this truck new and have almost 90,000 miles so far. Have had zero issues with this truck. Front brakes at 70,000 miles. Otherwise just regular maintenance. Plan on keeping this truck for a long time.
Great Truck. I had 4 of these trucks and sold them for great trade in value and had one with 6 years 289K miles and still running. I have the Luna rock colored 2023 Tacoma, TRD 4x4 Off Road and its simplicity makes me love it more. I'm 6 foot 1 inch and very comfortable. I traded a 2019 Tacoma with 40k and got 36K trade in for my new truck! I noticed those who say "long term review" is 1-2 years, but I will tell you 5 years is a true blue honest review, but the only problem is all other trucks don't last that long or already have major issues. This is a OFF ROAD, so it's not necessarily fair to ask for it to be a smooth ride, it's not designed for it. My tires are Toyo and they are great! I make U turns at lights as well as cars or similar trucks. I will like to say that I will never own another type of truck, but unfortunately Toyota will not make V6 Tacomas after 2023. This truck is a TANK and DEPENDABLE. (period). I have NEVER had to struggle to tow under 6K and the transmission is a smooth as silk. If you don' love this truck, you're looking for a truck for a whole different purpose as a reason. I had 4 Tacomas and NEVER, EVER broke down or EVER had one single issue. DEPENDABLE.
I traveled alot for my jobs in Florida averaging 30,000 to 35,000 miles per year. I generally rolled out at either 2-3 years for a new Tacoma. Over the years I owned 7 of them from 1989 to 2007 and never had any issues at all on any of them. Strongly built, tough, and dependable. vehicles. Just pull your scheduled maintenance. When I needed to pull a heavy load I traded my 2007 Tacoma TRD 4X4 in ( begrudgingly) for a 2005 GMC2500 HD Duromax diesel 4X4 crew cab. It had 31,000 miles on her. I drove that tank for 16 years and now has 317,700 miles on her. I am pretty maticulous with maintenance. That old Cecil the deisel still gives me 17-18 mpg hiway and thats a 7,000 lbs vehicle. Traded her in for a new Tacoma SR5 4X4 V6.... added side chrome bars, picking her up a two days. Hope she gives me the same great service as my others.
I just bought a 17 off road edition access cab with a 6 foot bed. I use it for my landscaping business and sit in it all day on my mowing day. I'm 6 2 and I'd say it's not that uncomfortable. I got the truck with only 28k miles and plan to use it till it fails
I have a 2022 with 37,000 miles. Most, and I mean 20,000 plus miles, are off road. I live in a mountainous state. I hunt and fish and camp in the back country. This beast has had zero issues. I have put it through the wringer. The TRD package gives me all the capability I need to get in deep and pull off world class Elk hunting trips. I tow a camper trailer a lot. I have never had an issue. With better off road tires than what came stock, a miller/cat plate system to protect the transmission oil pan, and an OTT tune, this thing does it all. If you are thinking of a good truck that has real world off road capabilities, you cannot beat a tacoma trd.
Awesome. I have a 2006 Tacoma standard cab 2.7 manual transmission and 253,000 miles and only regular maintenance and a few small fixes no problem fixing it myself. All the same equipment still other than regular stuff. Tires. Brake rotors. Wiper blades and batteries. Oh I replaced the stereo myself and added an amplifier. Tough Trucks. I've been driving the heck out of it it's entire life and it's still running strong. Same clutch alternator fuel injectors fuel pump and the rear brake shoes I'm gonna take a look at them tomorrow 😅. Good Day
I'm at 246k with my 99. I've had to replace a few things along the way but I've driven it hard in the desert heat around NV. Most of the repairs have been in the past couple years and usual wear. The engine is strong. With the prices right now I'm inclined to just keep driving it.
I kinda have a Unicorn with a 2019 manual Trdpro Tacoma voodoo blue with 32000+ miles. I'll be keeping this truck, she's still a looker and also paid off with zero issues with low miles. Love the 6 speed manual 💙
Same. I just bought a 6spd off-road and it has all the tech I will ever need…and man is she a looker after getting paint correction and ceramic coating done.
Top Gear had a video where they tried to kill one of those old Toyota pick ups. The first thing was putting it out where the tide would come in and cover it. And another dropping it from a building that was being demolished. All banged up it still started up and ran although slowly at the end of the video.
I'm in the market for a new or slightly used Tacoma & have been doing tons of research. If this helps others, the only years that you want to avoid, that is consistent with other videos is the following years . . 2007, 2009, 2016, 2017. The best years I researched was the 2010, 2013, 2015 & the 2019. I hope this helps others who might be in the market for a Tacoma like I am.
What engine? 3.5? 4.0? 2.7? Also which transmission 5 speed Auto? 5 speed manual? 6 speed manual? You didn't really narrow anything down or give any nuance...My 09' reg cab 4wd 5speed 2TRFE has been bulletproof approaching 200k miles
2016 SR5. Just a couple hundred miles away from 100k. 7yrs of ownership, and she's never failed me. Imma keep her till the wheels fall off. The only thing that got me was the 3rd break light leak, but that was covered by a recall and if you happen to have paid for it you can get your money back.
I have same truck, 07 as well, California one so no rust. It just keeps going. Dealing with some sun bleaching and fading , the paints real thin… but that and the small rear leaf springs are about the only niggles I have! Can still get 20,000 plus for it and I bought it new for 30k in 2007
2023 TRD off-road, Leather, Snugtop cab, custom 1200 W audio installation, Diode Dynamics and Morimoto LED lighting upgrades, Stage 1 tuning, it never ends! Luv this beast ❤
My 1st tacoma was a 2001 SR5 4 CYL....TRADED to Toyota 18 yrs. Old a d 189k miles. I have been driving my 2nd which is a 2014 TRD Sport TRD 4x4....I have just hit 75k miles..just oil change and follow recommended fluid service changes...my tires...battery..wipers are the only items I had to Change...oh and I will never go electric
I had a 2013 Tacoma that I loved until a semi-truck tagged me in the passenger side. The truck tipped on its side and I went for a heck of a ride down the highway. My truck was totaled, I walked away with a couple of bruises and small cuts. I love my tacoma! I just got a new one and I am looking forward to new travels.
22 TRD Off Road, purchased new 18 months ago. 25000miles, no issues at all. 10000 Mike trip from Ontario to Yellowstone, Grand Canyon and back thru Colorado. Towing a small camper. Another 8000 mike trip across Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador. Lot of gravel roads, hills, curves. Again towing a camper. My 3rd Taco, these things are little beasts for durability
I have towed my 2100 lb camper with the 3rd and now with my 4th gen trd off road. Honestly the 8 speed tranny with the 4 cylinder turbo is so much better.
I purchased a 2023 June 2023 and this is my third one. I had a 2019 and didn’t get it undercoated and rustproofed. I got the 2019 in April 2019 and two years later, there was so much surface rust, I bought a 2021, both were TRD Sport models. I loved that truck but never really used it, so, after buying 2 different Mazdas and a Jeep Cherokee, I went back to Toyota. This one I’ll keep even though the mpg is not very good. It’s not made for towing more than 4000 pounds through the mountains and use the ECT button if towing at all times or you’ll burn the transmission. Just fyi, the only Jeeps that are true 4WD, are the Gladiator and wrangler, the others are all wheel drive, another reason I dumped my Cherokee. I looked at and rented a 2024 for one week, gave it the Mercedes Benz challenge and it didn’t do so well. Toyota ate it by putting a 4 banger turbo in. Most people start the truck and go not giving the turbo the needed time, same as shut down, park, key off, that’s that. These will start to hit the service departments on a hook after 12-14 months of everyday driving. The Tundra’s are already stacking up in the service lane. Anyway, if you can grab a new 23 still, I’d get it, cuz these 24’s well, they suck!!
I owned a 2000 Tacoma MT V6, I owned a 2016 Tacoma MT V6, and eventually I realized as great as the truck is I need a full-size truck and I went with a 2021 tundra Trd pro double cab and the tundras the greatest truck ever made. I should’ve gone to a tundra long time ago.
I've owned the 2005 traded with 24,000 miles, 2008 traded with 20,000, 2011 traded with 99,000 Bought the 2020 TRD Offroad 4x4...I have loved each of my trucks and the only issue I ever had with any of them was the clutch pedal squeak when pressed. I currently have 35,000 on my 2020 and have not had and issue or any complaints at all. If offered a Corvette, I would trade it in for another Tacoma!
Just got my first truck (always been a sports car guy but have a young family). It's a 2023 white SR5 4x4 (w/ tech package) with 5 miles on the dash. I'm not used to the way it drives but for $350 a month I'll take it lol. Thank God it takes 87 oct because this get around the same mpg as my 2018 is350 fsport did. Also has ZERO ass.. I also hear it's pretty expensive to give it some oomf but the resale value along with the reliability is Tier 1.
@@chrisdrives8204 well I'm having a problem not modifying it with new parts everyday lol. I now understand how people go full-blown overland. Never been an off-roaders (from LB, Cali) but it seems like not taking a Tacoma off-road is like not letting a fish swim lol
Yea man, just got a '23 Tacoma also. I was getting 16 mpg on premium in my '13 car which also popped up with a 7k repair bill last month. You would think truck people would be used to low mpg but I guess us performance car guys have it worse. I plan to go drive on soft sand this weekend and test out the 4x4.
Yeah, it is thirsty for me as well. I can get around 12.5 l/100 km if I drive freeway mostly with 55-65 mph speeds. Once go faster, it is more like 15.5-17 l/100 km. Hopefully this truck stays as reliable as everyone says, cause if not, dont see much point of keeping it being that thirsty these days with gas prices around $1.50 per 1 liter
You got any mods? I reliably get 10l/100k on the highway at 110km an hour. My personal best is in the mid-high 8's on my daily commute. V6 base model. 4X4.
I have had several Tacoma's over the years. Best Mid size by far. No issues as reported in this article with hunting for gears. For the record I have had two full size RAM's and while they where good the Tacoma's is by far the best. My recent Tacoma 2021 Nightshade. Abosulutley love this truck. Ther is no wonder they reatin a hifg resale vale
I have a 2017 SR5 2.7 and it'll get 28mpg highway . I traded a 2014 SR5 in on it with the big difference being getting in the driver's seat. I'm 6 ft 2 inches and my head hits the top of the door frame often which it didn't in the 2014. I'll be keeping the 2017 a very long time and enjoy it.
@@chrisdrives8204 The seats comfortable but getting in the truck is the problem. I'm 6 ft 2 in and have to watch my head getting in . Love the truck. Quiet compared to others.
One common issue not mentioned is the timing cover can leak, especially on earlier 3rd Gen models. If you're outside of warranty, it can be upwards of $3k to fix.
To anyone not willing to do it themselves maybe. I can do a full timing belt, tensioner, and water pump replacement with new seals on the crank and cams in an afternoon from watching a youtube video. $300 cost off Rockauto. Stop getting ripped by the dealers and mechanics.
@@Adam_Newman if you purchased one aftermarket, probably. I don't know of any offered by Toyota as they're usually 5 years or 60k miles for the power train. That being said, I had the Toyota platinum warranty that was good until 110k for me and everything was covered.
@@chrisdrives8204 One Hub/bearing was replaced...can happen. The rear springs were kind of weak. One element of the leaf cracked. I replaced with new aftermarket rear Leafs. I think towing our RV 10 000 kms across Canada came into play. The aftermarket springs were much better for ride quality and better for towing. The rear drum brakes would seize on me when i would go to my camp...the mud and water would lock them on. After dragging the rear wheels in 4 lo back and fourth, they brakes would release. The mud flaps were too long and when reversing, was easy to rip one off. Toyota addressed that issue in the gen 3 Tacoma. One other failure after many years was driver heated seat burned up. Estimate to repair was $2 000. I said no thanks. The radio had issues with the screen going blank...due to excessive corrosion for the antenna base and mounting hardware. The hardware was replaced 3 times. So, the cost of repairs over 8 years was around $2300 CAD....That is not terrible. Way cheaper than any GM or FORD we owned. The power train of gen 2 Tacoma is bulletproof.
@@nicholaspetre1 Tundra has 46 000 kilometres or about 27 000 miles. It is excellent. Had to replace front rotors due to excessive corrosion. Will buy hi performance next time. Battery went dead a 6 months and windshield cracked. Both replaced under warranty. That's it in 3 years. Very impressed so far. Best fuel economy is 12.1 to 12.4 litres per 100 kms. That is pretty good for a v8 truck. If driven hard well ya it's real thirsty. This truck will out live me. Towing is great with the 5.7. So much power and torque.
Got me a new to me 2021 Tacoma TRD with the leather and sun roof package a week ago and the guys at work laugh because I got a mid size but I couldn’t care less. I love it and I know I will as long as I own it.
I was always a Tacoma wannabe, having owned Nissan's for over 30 years (I couldn't justify the extra 5k at the time for a Tacoma). Bought my first Tacoma in '21 (TRD sport w/6sp manual), (manual transmission were no longer available on Nissan's) . I was EXTREMELY disappointed in the GUTLESS Tacoma compared to my Nissan. I added a Jet pedal commander, exhaust, cold air intake and had a guy throw in a custom tune in the ECU, Now she runs like it should have. Aside from that I love the truck, PERFECT!
I previously owned a 2014 Nissan Frontier and now I just bought a 2023 TRD off-road. But I would definitely recommend the Nissan Frontier to anyone looking for a good solid cheaper truck as they last over 300k pretty easily, I like both Tacoma and frontier as they are reliable and capable.
Are used to love Nissans, but their quality has gone into the toilet in the last 15 years. I’m glad you had success with your frontier. But I would do research online before I buy another one. 1:15
I wonder if my taco is considered long term enough. My 2010 taco has only 353000 miles and the darn thing’s still running strong, and hardly has any problems, besides replacing the alternator once and tires and brakes and routine maintenance. I had a nissan frontier and it couldn’t make it pass 100k and I junked it. I love my taco.
I bought a new 2022 Tacoma and my number one issue is with the transmission. It all has to do with the CAFE standards. I have owned a half dozen Toyota's and never had one shift like this. I hope a tune fix comes out from Toyota in the near future.
Yup tranny is rubbish. Downshifts when going down hills for no reason and winds engine. Hard second gear up shift sometimes. Toyota says this is normal operation. It’s annoying
I got a 2022 Toyota Tacoma sr5 with the v6 4x4 6 speed auto 4door and there is a slight like diesel clunk coming from the engine area it doesn’t do it often at all but it’s when it’s going in a uphill and you need more gas and accelerate and it makes that noise before it downshifts
Still drive my 05 Tacoma everyday. Only time it didn’t start was when it was out of gas since the fuel gage stops at quarter of a tank. Chalk that up to operator error
Only thing I slightly regret is not getting cement color. I got mgm which was my second choice. Also wish I had heated seats I got really good seat covers for my fabrics seats tho people think it’s real leather
I got a 2021 2WD TRD Off Road and love it. No issues. My sister's 2017 Audi seems to break once a month to the point she's looking for a Toyota to switch to 😂.
Great long term review. How long did you rent that truck for. Ive had mine for almost 5 years, the longer ive owned it the more I love it. My only complain is occupant fatigue on rides over 5 or 6 hours. Unlike my wifes camry where you will get some great sleep as a passenger because it is so comfortable. Regardless, it has fit my every need even though i bought the base model 4cyl. They hold up great and being a bot slower it will make the perfect first vehicle for my son when he turns 16. He is 13 now and has driven it quite a few times. He can see well out of it and the overall drivability has given him confidence to be comfortable driving. He has fallen in love with the truck as well.
@@chrisdrives8204 putting long term in the title is misleading. I guess if your holding your breath for a couple of days, that might be considered a long time. As long as you get the views, eight?
@@jkosh2046 not really. This one is not new so I provided comments on this exact one and information about long term reliability and the experiences of others.
I’ve got a 2019 trd off road 4x4 2.5 “ lift fox shocks leather JBL wheels tires, 171k 3 sets of tires 3 windshields 1 battery original brakes. Looks and runs like new. Bought new. Best truck on the market. Period 🤘
I'm very excited to see the refresh with a turbo 4 cylinder for this truck. I think one of Toyota's issues has been that they haven't kept up with increases in fuel economy and capabilities like the other manufacturers especially on their bigger vehicles. The V6 with the 6 speed was great when it came out, but you'll get better gas milage and power from basically any other mid size or half ton truck from another manufacturer since like 2019ish within the same price point. Yes the reliability is virtually unmatched, but if I save enough on fuel over 100k miles of ownership to replace the engine or transmission, do I really want to sacrifice power and capability?
An actual truck engineer explained to me that these 4 cylinder turbo-prop Tacoma engines to be release in 2024 are not reliable in the sense they will not last as long as traditional Tacomas due to the fact that all turbo engines must work significantly harder to put out the power and torque then a V6, therefore they simply wear faster (25-35%). So, while they are going to be better on gas mileage, remember you can get more of something without giving up something and for turbos that is longevity. For me, I'll stick to a V6, no thanks!
You will never save enough in gas to buy a new engine, that’s why these non turbo engines are so sought after now. The 24 is nice no doubt but that engine won’t last half as long as this 6 cylinder in the 3rd gen. And the older one was even more reliable.
@@kentjax3622 I've heard the same thing from several other reports. The Turbo increases the heat & stress on the engine and wears out engine parts. I have a 22 TRD OR with Manual trans. Main use is for pulling a small camping trailer (2500 lbs) and off main road exploring. I am a previous Tacoma owner from years ago.
I had 93000 on a 2016 ac went out 4 times and it leaked the interior was soaking wet on passenger side recall issue fixed the leaked but it still had a mildew smell. Driver seat uncomfortable it sat really lower and not very adjustable. Overall decent truck mechanically , I just didn’t like the ticking coming from the direct injection at first I thought it had valve issues. Timing chain was a definite plus.
I agree with the review for the most part. I think you would be more correct in saying the stock transmission tune is absolutely horrendous, but this is an issue that can be greatly improved if not completely remedied with a simple aftermarket tune. Toyota, you should be ashamed.
2016 tacoma trd offraod with the electronics package, crawl control and all the goodies. 1 owner (me) I have 152,000 miles on it so far and nothing but maintenance so I'd say that's pretty dang good. Considering all the problems the ranger and colorado are having before they hit 100,000 miles!
That's odd. I've got a 2023 trd sport 4dr 4×4 Auto SBed & I average 23mpg with my winter wheels n tires (1 size higher) STUDDED at that. Less intown. Flat routes & back roads I can get 23mpg @ 50mph on cruise control. On i95 I've never had it above 65mph on cruise control..... Came with 265/65/17 stock wheels & dealership tires.. Winter tires 265/65/16 with highway Artic Claw studded tires. The 16'inch wheel & tires are larger by 1 inch height & probably heavier. As soon as they wear out I'm going 265/70/16 lighter & probably better for suspension. Lift = I did that on my 2020 2/1. Loved the looks BUT had issues with alignment (could have been bigger tires as well) so I had alignment every 6 months to be safe. Live & Learn... These are my experiences. Thank you for reading. Have a wonderful day
Sold my 2009 Tacoma manual transmission in 2022 with 198,000 miles. Had the rust issues and finally the clutch went. Still got $5500 for it. Replaced it with a 2022 manual transmission tacoma off-road. By the way, absolutely love, love, love your “Chris invests” channel!!!
Kicking the tires on 2013 Taco Limited with 89K miles, one owner, clean carfax, but being sold by a dealership for $25,500, it is immaculate and well taken care of. I wanted a pick up to use for transporting light cargo and medical equipment, both city and highway miles and I of course understand the Toyota reputation for their longevity and have test driven all of the new mid size trucks, Ranger, Colorado, Canyon, and Frontier. For $4 or 5K more than this I could buy one of those used as well or new base model, possibly. Real dilemma deciding since they all offer good things but all have their flaws. I really need a cargo mover that will last and a vehicle that my 18 year old son can drive and make delivery runs with me. I am older so he would end up with whichever vehicle I choose. I can’t stomach those cargo trucks like Ford Transport. New they are insanely high-priced, used they all have extremely high mileage. Thoughts in buying and using the 2013 Tacoma for light cargo duty?
Maybe you should change the title since its a RENTAL. I have had a 2008 TRD sport 4x4, a 2016 TRD Sport 4x4 Long bed, and now a 21 TRD OR Premium 4x4 Long bed and absolutely love it (all trucks bought brand new). I will keep my '21 till it dies in 25-30 years (when the 4th gen Tacos have all died long before, mine will still be going). Nothing wrong with better mileage and power in the 24's, except adding the turbo... The life span is going to be drastically reduced. Im not willing to spend $50k on a truck that is only going to last 100k miles. But, thats the way we are heading. Its the "throw away" generation. They dont fix stuff anymore. Just throw it away and buy another.
This is a great big nothing burger. Driving around in the Tacoma for six months. Is it going to tell you anything. Tacoma’s are amazing. With proper maintenance. They run forever. And 0:02 any expensive malfunctions are very rare.
I had a third gen tacoma. The issue I had with the truck was that it was gutless on the highway. It kept downshifting over and over while in cruise control. Freaking annoying. No get up and go from a stop light or a stop sign. I had a first gen, a couple of 2nd gen and one third gen tacoma. I currently own a 5th gen 4runner. Good trucks, very reliable and dependable. I hope Toyota did it right with the 4th gen 4 cylinder turbo. We'll see.
If i was to get a Tacoma I would get the extended cab and regular size bed, not the 4 door with small backs seats and a baby bed. Get an SUV or car if you carry people, get a practical truck if you need a truck. Don't get a truck that does neither well while getting poor mpg
I love my tacoma. This truck is built for one purpose, and that's to be used and abused while still being reliable as ever. This truck is by far one of my most loved trucks for it's simplicity. All that extra bullshit electronics you find in most Ford or Chevies isnt there. Later down the line this can be a huge money saver as electronics are so expensive to replace when they go out. I love everything about this truck; however; the only problem i have well... nothing. The reliability of this truck is on a whole different level. You can take this to the ends of the earth and back with no issues.
It seems like that automatic transmission searching for gears thing the computer starts to understand the way you drive and it begins to shift better after 15,000 miles
@@DdDten completely normal for it to sound like a diesel. The sound is a result of the self-cleaning direct fuel injection systems activation. They have both direct injection and secondary port injection to reduce carbon buildup that other direct injection vehicles suffer from.
The one thing I don't like is it only getting a turbo charged 4 cyl. That motor is not going to last as long. That sucks. Guess I'll just have to install a crate motor if I can find one.
1 thing I dont like is how low the dash and steering wheel sit….also the roof line is to low….but these are knit- picking things I’d change if I could,,,still a great truck…
I dont like the shifting , on the highway its constantly going between 5th and 6th , also when you have to absolutely gas it, it tachs out and then you have to tap the gas to get it to shift basically a new truck also. and the rotors are warped , wobbles at 70 when tapping brakes.
I'm reminded of the horse-drawn wagons in 19th century mining operations. Most had teams of six mules or horses to pull the loads of rock and ore from the mine pits. Imagine the mining company announcing it would save money and reduce the need for more animals by placing just two horses or mules on each wagon. Yeah, it would not be long before they are dead. That's what Toyota is doing. Their Tacoma has been a great truck, but it has increased in size and weight. Now comes the government EPA, whispering in Toyota's ear or maybe twisting their arm, and Toyota announces they will offer only a 4 cylinder engine for this vehicle. But it's okay, they say, they will crack the whip on that engine by putting a supercharger on it. Well, it won't be long before that engine dies an early death, because it will require much higher RPMs to get the same power that the long-lasting V6 provided.
I've owned 2 Tacoma's. Never a issue here. Maybe if your an aggressive driver & think it's a V8 I could see it. Not once have a noticed a issue. The truck will adapt to your driving habits if your driving it like it was designed for. 5 star rating for Toyota IMO
I own a 2023 Tacoma sr 4x4 double cab. It currently has 5,700 miles. My complaints so far are an off center steering wheel which was fixed properly, only after my 3rd trip back to the dealer, the engine ticks oddly, last week I took it intonthe car wash for tge first time and a rubber piece on the roof about 3 feet long flew off as there was nothing holding it down, it clunks, often times won't go into over drive an on the interstate 75 mph speeds I'm only get 12 mph and I don't tow and I baby it. My old, made in Japan Tacomas were great. This made in Mexico Tacoma is a desaster. Oh and I nearly forgot to mention my $99 rattle can spray paint job full of imperfections and thin paint. Needless to say I am very unhappy.
Never buy a first model of a new gen, the gne4 with the turbo is untested. I just ordered a 2023 trd offroad with the off road package, tech package, and led headlight/drl and tail lights for 41,343
Engine and transmission have been around in Toyota's lineup for 3 or 4 years now and seem fairly stable. Rest of the build definitely still a question mark though.
I had a First year Tacoma(95) and only thing that went bad was the right side license plate bulb other than that 100% nothing went wrong just did oil changes and changed tires. Id leased it and at the end it was actually worth almost5K more than the buyout so I bought it at the buyout price.
Currently, no one on the planet knows what the 5 year resale value of a 23 Tundra will be. KBB is merely guessing. The gen2 Tundra had legendary reasle value. The gen3 is still a mystery.

Finally a honest review from an owner’s perspective. This truck will always be highly sought after for it’s simplicity and reliability and capability. No turbo, no hybrid, no plug in.
Absolutely, a great truck all around!
No kidding,no fancy bs,just a quality truck,love it.
Unlike the new Tacoma hahah
I have been driving toyotas for 46 years.you cannot beat them.i have a 2023 tacoma on its way now
Is it an honest review tho? It's a rental car. You can see the "no smoking " sticker.
Any issues bloke
TRD what ! People think TRD covers all of the trucks. It don’t, TRD sport , TRD OFF ROAD , TRD PRO. Which one do you have?
I bought my Tacoma (TRD Off Road double cab) new January 2019. I love this truck- very solid…I have just under 250k miles , many in 4WD. Absolutely zero issues other than routine maintenance- I have changed my oil every 4500-4900 miles (all at my dealership).
I still have not replaced the rear (drum) brakes!
Excuse me, how many miles in 4.5 years? 😮

Good luck.
That's baby miles my 03 Nissan xterra has 456k miles and still runs better than most vehicles these days!!
I have a 2021 TRD 6 speed manual and actually love it. 33000 miles and have not had any problems or issues.

Just purchased the last year of the 3rd Gen Taco's. Glad I got the last one before the 2024 update. All the kink problems should be gone hence its the last year. I am happy to be apart of the Taco gang !! (2023 TRD OFF-ROAD TACO)
Ditto!
I did the same thing. Theres gonna be a lot of videos of upset Gen4 Taco owners for the first couple of years, especially as they work the issues out.
Same I just got mine a month ago before the new 4 cylinder engine comes out
lol. Same. Starting to feel like the 2023 trd tacoma was the most sought after truck of the year!
DEPENDABLE.
Was the 289k one a gen 3?
Just purchased a used '20 Pro. I'm 5'11 and the seats are fine for me. Very happy with my purchase
Congrats, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
I'm 5'8 and it gets uncomfortable after 2 hrs... but I'm fat 😂
I’m very pleased with my 99 Tacoma 470000 and still climbing.
Don't sell it!!
Lucky!
Same. I just bought a 6spd off-road and it has all the tech I will ever need…and man is she a looker after getting paint correction and ceramic coating done.
You’ll get tired of that manual eventually
I’ve got the 6 sod auto in my 22, just WAY too much traffic and gridlock on my area for a manual
Tacoma's are nice but my late 1980's Toyota truck works just fine, simple, easy to work on and reliable!
Those are tanks 👍
I am looking up the same kind of Tacoma, new or slightly used I’ve seen similar mentions of years to avoid, so this is very helpful thank you!
If you are still looking. I do have mine for sale. However it is a 2016 4cyl, RWD, double cab. Fairly bare bones. But good on gas and moving furniture
2016 SR5. Just a couple hundred miles away from 100k. 7yrs of ownership, and she's never failed me. Imma keep her till the wheels fall off. The only thing that got me was the 3rd break light leak, but that was covered by a recall and if you happen to have paid for it you can get your money back.

My truck was totaled, I walked away with a couple of bruises and small cuts. I love my tacoma! I just got a new one and I am looking forward to new travels.

Tacoma is the best midsize pickup truck in the world I loved
We have one in my family
And yes the Offraod version is worth every Penny extra. Better wheel, tires, suspension, and lighting right out of the box.
I own a 2007 Tacoma with over 600k miles she’s been great no major issues.
600,000? WOW!!!
There were reports of excessive gear hunting in the third generation. Whats your experience? How did it do with towing?
I've owned the 2005 traded with 24,000 miles, 2008 traded with 20,000, 2011 traded with 99,000
Bought the 2020 TRD Offroad 4x4...I have loved each of my trucks and the only issue I ever had with any of them was the clutch pedal squeak when pressed.

So what was it in the long term review that was different than I thought it would be?
The no smoking sticker means it's a rental car
Yeah, it is thirsty for me as well. I can get around 12.5 l/100 km if I drive freeway mostly with 55-65 mph speeds. Once go faster, it is more like 15.5-17 l/100 km. Hopefully this truck stays as reliable as everyone says, cause if not, dont see much point of keeping it being that thirsty these days with gas prices around $1.50 per 1 liter
That’s worse l/100 than my Trail Boss with a 5.3. And with a smaller tank than my Chev, I’d be filling up twice a week. That’s nuts.
Im getting 20mpg and i average 80 -85 on the highway and 45 -50 on main roads

One common issue not mentioned is the timing cover can leak, especially on earlier 3rd Gen models. If you're outside of warranty, it can be upwards of $3k to fix.

My 13 was dead reliable the 8 years I had it. Barely any major issues. Was at 170 000.kms when i traded for my 20 Tundra
What were the issues you had?
How is Tundra doing? How many miles on it? What is the overall impression of Tundra?

Thank you for your videos. Did you think to make video about comparison of 3 Tacoma generation?
Have this same setup in Lunar Rock, I'm 6'3 and plenty of head room, glad scooped up a '23 late last year, love the Truck!
Tacoma Is the best... Best liability and resale... Regardless of some flukes...
Does your truck's engine always run a bit hot? The temperature gauge reads just over the halfway mark.
No never over half
Also wish I had heated seats I got really good seat covers for my fabrics seats tho people think it’s real leather
do you like gray over silver?
I got a 2021 2WD TRD Off Road and love it. No issues. My sister's 2017 Audi seems to break once a month to the point she's looking for a Toyota to switch to 😂.
2016 107 k , 100k Highway miles , never abused , please don’t low ball , I know what I have 😂 . Best mid size truck 🛻
12000 miles isnt even breaking the vehicle in yet.
I cant imagine getting another vehicle if you need something offroad and reliable. 34k 2021 TRD Offroad and zero issues so far.
Had this one for a few days but have had them a handful of times. They are great trucks! Thanks for watching 👍
@@chrisdrives8204 just read the comments, it was misleading. Maybe not intentional, but it still was.

Would you buy the 24 Tacoma?
Im lookn forward to the 24 as well. Arent they using the turbo 4cyl in other toyotas or lexus’ now?

I've heard the same thing from several other reports.
Love my 2020 tocoma. Will keep it to half a million miles
I agree with the review for the most part.
I think you would be more correct in saying the stock transmission tune is absolutely horrendous, but this is an issue that can be greatly improved if not completely remedied with a simple aftermarket tune.
Toyota, you should be ashamed.
A sprint booster set to red 5 eliminates the lag and searching for gears in my 2021 automatic. The lag is built in for economy numbers. Simple fix!
That’s a rental?
2016 tacoma trd offraod with the electronics package, crawl control and all the goodies. 1 owner (me) I have 152,000 miles on it so far and nothing but maintenance so I'd say that's pretty dang good. Considering all the problems the ranger and colorado are having before they hit 100,000 miles!
I Put 32s on my 23 with a leveling kit i get 12 mpg in town driving 🤦♂️ i wish i would of just got a full size truck
I’ve driven my 04 Toyota 15 years normal wear and tear over 300,000 miles still runs like new
Kicking the tires on 2013 Taco Limited with 89K miles, one owner, clean carfax, but being sold by a dealership for $25,500, it is immaculate and well taken care of.
Check for frame rust
It's a super honest review, unlike the paid UA-camrs who say the same shit and copy each other.
Thanks for watching 👍
Wow, What year Tacoma is that?!?!
2016 114,000 miles I love it still
This is a great big nothing burger. Driving around in the Tacoma for six months. Is it going to tell you anything. Tacoma’s are amazing. With proper maintenance. They run forever. And 0:02 any expensive malfunctions are very rare.
Thanks for sharing
I have a 2016 Off Road and hardly any issues
Absolutely dead on right about being over a certain height. I’m 6 3 (lean) and it feels like I’m trying to crawl into a bird cage in these things.
I am happy with my 22 Tacoma SR access cab with a v6
Glad to hear it
It seems like that automatic transmission searching for gears thing the computer starts to understand the way you drive and it begins to shift better after 15,000 miles
love my 21 tacomaaa never selling
Don't blame you 😂
Love my 21 as well but am really shocked how sluggish it is and loud idle clacking sounds like a diesel. Dealer says normal
@@DdDten completely normal for it to sound like a diesel. The sound is a result of the self-cleaning direct fuel injection systems activation. They have both direct injection and secondary port injection to reduce carbon buildup that other direct injection vehicles suffer from.
My 2018 TRD Sport just hit 50k. No issues so far just a bit of a hog on gas.
I’ll stick to my 2021 V6 3.5L Taco TRD SPORT forever
Only good thing with a Tacoma is the resale value and reliability. It’s the only reason to buy
Exactly! Reliability is huge, especially if you offload.
Great video! Thank you. Most people who buy a Tacoma will do so for a nice looking and reliable truck.
Thanks for watching!
All Gen 3 Tacoma's need to be regeared It's the best bang for your buck. Gas mileage is awful in these vehicles but they are reliable.
I dont like the shifting , on the highway its constantly going between 5th and 6th , also when you have to absolutely gas it, it tachs out and then you have to tap the gas to get it to shift basically a new truck also. and the rotors are warped , wobbles at 70 when tapping brakes.
I like the no smoking sticker you added to your tacoma
I didn't want to take a chance with the four cylinder turbo, so I just bought a 2023 Tacoma. And I sold my 2007 Tacoma which had $238,000 Mi for $10K
Nice truck, I don't blame you
I just got a 19 Tacoma, seems loud and theres metel filings on the dipstick. Not much but a bit, 84000kms. Anyone hear of this?
On the fence now with the 2023 6 cylinder with the bad reviews of the transmission.
It's not a big deal
I've owned 2 Tacoma's. Never a issue here. Maybe if your an aggressive driver & think it's a V8 I could see it. Not once have a noticed a issue. The truck will adapt to your driving habits if your driving it like it was designed for. 5 star rating for Toyota IMO
I love this last model. If I had the money I would grt one before they are all gone and only the duel turbo 4 cylinder is all you can get
Great review!
I just ordered a 2023 trd offroad with the off road package, tech package, and led headlight/drl and tail lights for 41,343
Nice I'm sure you'll be happy with it
Engine and transmission have been around in Toyota's lineup for 3 or 4 years now and seem fairly stable. Rest of the build definitely still a question mark though.
How much off msrp did you pay?
I had a First year Tacoma(95) and only thing that went bad was the right side license plate bulb other than that 100% nothing went wrong just did oil changes and changed tires. Id leased it and at the end it was actually worth almost5K more than the buyout so I bought it at the buyout price.
Currently, no one on the planet knows what the 5 year resale value of a 23 Tundra will be. KBB is merely guessing. The gen2 Tundra had legendary reasle value. The gen3 is still a mystery.
I loved this video!
What a nice city 👌🏻 where was rhe video filmed?
Naples, FL...Thanks for watching!
