These armies were easily the greatest of their kind during their respective periods and dynasties.i doubt any other empire could have survived and prospered in all aspects(economically, culturally, technologically and of course through military expansion) for over a millennia while in a sate of everlasting war on all sides. When the byzantines were in their MANY golden ages, literally no army could stand against their might, discipline, cunning, valor and their unshakable willpower through faith. Not even the seljuks could, for Manzikert was the result not of some form Seljuk brilliance nor of Byzantine incompetence, but of a roman commander refusing to assist on the emperor's flanks to further his own political agenda. The most consistently brilliant generals were birthed from the womb of The Eastern Roman Empire and the armies of Rome would gain their emperor the prestige of being considered the most powerful sovereign in the world throughout many periods.Unlike every single other empire, which crumbled once their golden age began to fade and were never able to recover, the byzantines could never be kept down for long no matter what the odds. The armies of Justinian,Leo III,Constantine V,Nikiphoras Phokas,John I Tziminskes,Basil II ''Bulgarslayer'',Alexios A Komnenos,John II Komnenos,Manuel I Komnenos and Constantine XI Palaiologos proved this time and time again.

The Greeks are older than the Egyptians (Minoan civilization and cycladic civilization) Also these greek philosophers you mentioned didn't believe in the ancient gods so they weren't pagan. About the copies greeks invented everything even the Egyptian pyramids were made by Greeks. Also the Greeks had many philosophers and inventors. Egypt didn't have such philosophers and inventors ( also Egyptian philosophers never existed and if they did they are very few). You should start reading history and then comment showing how much you hate Greece which spread the Greek civilization across the world and that's why now humanity is civilized

"formidable foes" - because they never fought us without help from third part countries (Serbia, Magyars, Kiev Rus and Armenia)
To the other comments I can say only this - The Eastern Roman Empire had nothing to do with modern greece so you just can calm down. And of course we didnt like the byzantines supervising the world order, because this empire had no values. We wanted peace, but the Byzantines did not stop attacking us. They even hired Russians, Serbs, Magyars and Armenians to fight against us.Do not forget that if the Byzantines did not go against the Bulgarians in the year 680, we would not have taken over the Balkan territories of Byzantium.AND DO NOT FORGET THAT THEY HIRED THE ARABS AND GIVE THEM TERRITORIES IN THE BALKANS SO THEY CAN LEAD MORE WARS AGAINST BULGARIA. It is only their fault that they invited the Arabs to their chambers.

@Русский Киборг The dreams of landing in the warm seas, which the Russians have never experienced, fascinated you. The Russians never got Istanbul. Finish your dreams in this impossible Constantinople. Do ignore the Russian documentaries. Be respectful, be a guest, we do not want a visa to see your ancestors. What more do you want? Don't be greedy.

I suspect he meant that the Ottoman Turks were (sort of) mercenaries of the Arab Muslims, and had converted to Islam before they became a persistent foe of Orthodox Christian Byzantium.
