The return of the Byzantine empire and its capital Constantinople to Christian rule is a dream and a goal that can never be put aside. The Ottomans and Islam wrecked the pre-existing rich culture of Anatolia. Constantinople was a Christian city for 1,100 years and then fell under the shadow of Islam during the past 570 years - barely more than half the time of Christian rule. Thus, there is always a prospect of a reversal during this century and beyond.

indeed, they referred to themselves simply as "hoi Romaioi", the Romans! This is btw also the reason why the region around Ravenna was called "Romania", then later "Romagna", the land of the Romans! It was the western peoples that usually called the eastern roman empire as "Bizantine", from Byzantion, the old name of the eastern empire capital before it was refounded by Constantine in 330 as "Nova Roma", and later called, indeed, Constantinople.
True, the Eastern Roman Empire never called itself the "Byzantine Empire". This term was NOT coined by western peoples as one of your responders said. It was coined by responsible historians who noted that the East Roman Empire had evolved into a Greek state from having been a Latin one. By the end of the heroic Emperor Heraclius' reign the East Romans clearly saw themselves as Greeks not Latins and so the use of a different name marks this important change. The historians chose Constantinople's original Greek name as an appropriate name for an Empire which had transformed its own nature to being in essence Greek. Its intent is for greater clarity not disrespect. Also, please note that art historians label early Greek art as Archaic, the best known period of great art as Classical, the art made during and after Alexander the Great as Hellenistic, and lastly the art that flourished for 1000 years in Constantinople as Byzantine. I really doubt early Greek artist called their work Archaic, that men like Phidias called their art Classical, that Greeks called their more dramatic and emotional art following Alexander Hellenistic, or that Greek artists called their rich, stylized art as seen in the Hagia Sophia Byzantine. We do. It gives us a clearer understanding of the art by associating it with the time it was created and with the purpose of understanding why it was created. Likewise, Americans call the time before the Revolution the "Colonial Era", the period before the Civil War "Antebellum", and the period of industrial expansion in the late 1800's the "Gilded Age". I doubt Americans used these terms when those times were happening. So, please understand that such terms are often used in many other instances and used to make clearer the period being described. Thank you, Richard

@@steveweatherbe Its finances weakened due to wars and plagues. If the Turks were the lethal pneumonia, then others were the carcinogens of smoking. Byzantium steadily shrank. I can only imagine what role a strong Byzantine Empire could have been had it thrived two centuries longer. Would it have had influence upon the aesthetics of the Protestant Reformation? The Greeks have been excellent sailors and traders. Imagine Orthodoxy establishing itself among peoples of the Americas.
Dear Monon, History is more complex than that. The East Roman Emperor sent word to the Pope begging for help against the Seljuk Turks who had taken most of Anatolia. The Pope had no army but he had a plan. He preached a crusade to push back the Turks and take back Jerusalem. His intended audience was the French nobility who spent much of their time fighting each other. Why not fight the common enemy instead? He had hoped that such cooperation with Constantinople would bring about the reunion of the Eastern and Western Churches. Much territory was won back for the Byzantine Empire and Jerusalem was captured. There were later crusades that didn't end the same way. I think it was the fourth crusade where the Venetians would finance it and the French knights would fight it. A Byzantine prince told them that he was the true heir to the throne and there was a lot of money in it for them if they got it back for him. The crusaders went to Constantinople and got him on the throne. That's when he told them he had no money. They were so angry that they had been had, they attacked the city they were supposed to defend. They killed, destroyed, and stole for days. When they were done, Constantinople had a Latin Emperor and a Latin Patriarch and much of the remaining empire was in the hands of Italian mechants and French nobility. I doubt Pope Urban had this in mind. This terrible event I think is still etched on the minds of many Orthodox Christians. Eventually, the Greeks expelled the Latins and won back small bits of the empire, but years of wars and death had taken their toll. Much of Constantinople was empty and it was the city walls that protected what remained. Protected until the Turks learned about canons. You know the rest. It is sad to realize that during this time, there was a church council going on in Italy. It was attended by many bishops from both East and West, by the East Roman Emperor and by the Pope. The Emperor conceded to the supremacy of the Pope and with the bishops in agreement, it looked as if unity was coming at last. The people of Constantinople refused to agree to it because they would not accept the Pope's authority. No help came. Historians doubt that the Pope at this time could have been able to interest European knights in another crusade. The fall of Constantinople was a terrible loss. Its causes included the fourth crusade and other things, too. Long years of war, plagues, population decline, and declining finances contributed to the end. History is seldom simple. I hope I have helped you to understand this terrible thing. I must also say that I personally feel guilty because it was my ancestors who attacked Constantinople instead of saving it. I am so very sorry for this.
It's just a Greek mentality. Is there such a thing as if that were the case? Hz. If Adam had not eaten the forbidden apple, humanity would not exist in the world. Are you a child then? If you had not licked the ass of Russia and England (replace Russia with America today), you would not have gained your freedom in 1821 and you would still be a province of ours.

Haven't seen the movie, but I think it can be quite interesting. Tirante el Blanco or Tirant lo Blanc is a medieval Catalan novel by Joanot Martorell, inspired supposedly by the life of Roger de Flor, commander of the Great Catalan Company of mercenaries who fought against the Turks alongside the Byzantines until they were betrayed by the emperor's son.

We fought against Catalan company, for many times. They tried to robe and conquer orthodox monasteries in the Greek coast,on Chalkidiki, where we have monastery on our own - Hilandar.Because of that, every monastery in that region were fortified. We send volonteeres to fight and defend it.

From Rome to Rome, the will, strength and mission are transmitted - to finally unite everything into one state. Let's hope that the monk Philotheus was not mistaken and the Third Rome will not repeat the fate of the former ones. We must do everything in the power of everyone, so that Rome does not fall
If you are saying that Russia must unite everything under itself and that that the Russian patriarch should be regarded as the new Ecumenical patriarch then you blaspheme. The Russian patriarch can throw his considerable weight around because half of Orthodoxy is Russian. The Ecumenical Patriarch is the first among equals and it was within his rights to give Ukraine its own Orthodox Church. The Russian Patriarch wants to hold onto his power even into schism with Constantinple. Perhaps he learned sych ruthlessness working for the KGB. Shame on you.

Don't fall for the agenda of those who sought to aggrandize themselves falsely by imposing the term Byzantium on the Christian Roman Empire. There never was a Byzantium, what was was rather the Christian Roman Empire (Orthodox), which had Constantinople as its capital, as opposed to the pagan Roman Empire, which had Rome as its capital.
The images are not Constantinople however one can recognize Palermo's "Palazzo dei Normanni and Cappella Palatina." Splendors left to us by Normans Kingdom of Sicily wear the Byzantine, Greek, Jewish and last and not list the Islamic people have left their passage of time. The music beautifully blends in. A master peace, the video show the actual building still standing in Palermo, a small reflection of Constantinople.

Exactly! Everyone blames Islam and Turks for the destruction of the Eastern Roman Empire. But western Catholic countries destroyed the Eastern Roman Empire under the name of the crusade and influence of the Vatican at 1204. Turks came 250 years later to take over the weakened city, just the shadow of the capitol of the Eastern Roman Empire. Empire was anymore just a city, and some land around Trabzon today.
Today Catholics around the world will proudly come to fight for Orthodox Constantinople and Orthodox Hagia Sophia. You have a huge army at the disposal of our Patriarch of Constantinople, HH Bartholomew. We Catholics will gladly shed our blood for our Orthodox Patriarch

I just came across this clip. Didn't know about this movie. I see somplaints here that the setting looks anachronistic and culturally mismatched in certain respects. I agree, but I find it useful to keep in mind that the movie is based on a work of fiction written by a 15th-century Valencian knight. As such, I have no problem with the idea of the aesthetics reflecting his own "mental theatre", so to say, representing the world of Byzantium as the writer might have imagined it.

Until very recently, people in the West have had little or no education about the Byzantine Empire, and what little they had been led to believe, has been largely inaccurate, and negative. I'm so happy to see that people are finally beginning to learn what it was, how great, and how important it was. My big disappointment with this video is the Westernized music! Byzantine musical theory is quite different, utilizing true modes that include microtones, polyphony rather than hamony, a totaly different musical notation; and very beautiful instruments that are quite different. It's very beautiful and very powerful, but quite different. It's a shame that the music in this video is so Westernized.
I appreciate your input however if somebody wants to listen to the original, ecclesiastical version of the hymn, there are many videos on UA-cam that do just that. On the other hand, if somebody wants to listen to a more creative, symphonic, westernized version, orchestration and interpretation of this hymn they can enjoy this one. That's the beauty of music and of the arts in general.

The Ottomans and Islam wrecked the pre-existing rich culture of Anatolia. Thus, there is always a prospect of a reversal during this century and beyond.

The great lost empire.
Even though from far away, I could understand that their art and costumes will forever be the treasures to humanity.
There never was an entity that called itself the 'Byzantine Empire': they were, and called themselves, the Eastern Roman Empire.
indeed, they referred to themselves simply as "hoi Romaioi", the Romans!

If Constantinople had not been destroyed and plundered by the Catholics, the Turkic peoples would have had no chance to take the city and there would be no Ottoman Empire. Oh fiddle sticks. Constantinople authored its own demise. The Catholics didn't destroy it.
This is just beautiful

It is believed it was created in 626ac when the Avars attacked Byzantium and the army was away fighting the Persians.
In Greek Orthodox church the Hymn is sang for 5 Fridays before Easter!
It’s the Roman Empire as such, or the Eastern Roman Empire or the Later Roman Empire to distinguish it. “Byzantine Empire” is just historian’s slang devised afterwards.

@@LordByron1821In facts the Venetians planned it by deviating the mob directing it to Constantinople instead of the Holy Land. To say Catholic (If you use it for the Orthodox Church why not Catholic?) Religion is a excuse not a fact. Those that gained from the sack of Constantinople wear Venetians others nothing.

Shame on Europen chivalry! Shame for the deceit and destruction of the Christian capital Constantinople in 1204.
Shame on Russian Orthodox☦️ shame on Orthodox they are not supporting Benentize soul.

Fun Fact: Christian Crusaders destroyed Constantinople. Yes, the Ottomans ultimately conquered it but the true beautiful Roman city was destroyed by European Christians.
Yes it is true but they were Italians , Italians were always Jealous Constantinople was better than Rome they refused to lose the title of the capital of the empire, some years later the Pope closed the crussaders order for Heresy.

It’s not “Tirante el blanco”, the book was written in catalan, so the title is “Tirant lo Blanch”. It’s the greatest work of catalan literature from the middle ages, and it’s ironically a “fanfic of byzantium surviving”, like an average EU4 run.
