- When you need to add aftermarket amplifiers to a car audio system you need a way to convert the factor "high level" signal to "low level" for rca connection you the new amplifier. This can be done with a "line output converter" (LOC for short) or a "digital signal processor" (dsp for short). What is the difference between these devices? What is best for you? Let's discuss!

Everytime that I think that I have car audio info figured out, I come to this channel and get smacked with new knowledge.
This is very accurate jaja
yes.
Yes
I just came here to confirm some info and got schooled.
Very Accurate
This man really knows his stuff and produces great videos. I just wished these videos came in a decaf version for us novices to follow easier.
hahahahahaha!
Lmao
The more you watch the more all these videos begin to make more sense
gets easier with time, but also youtube has a slowdown feature that works pretty well ^^
Its kind of mind boggling thats a lot of information to consume. I really like your video though.
absolutely perfect timing with this video, I have been watching a bunch of yours and audio Control (presented by you) videos to decipher what I need for my new custom setup
When The Jedi Car Audio Master speaks I listen & learn, thanks Mark super awsome content as always.
Really appreciate the videos. Your style of teaching should be used as a example for other youtubers. I feel like I go to a 10min Audio class when I watch your videos. Thanks again I'm so close to buying a AudioControl DSP! 😁
Audio Control has had it going on since the mid nineties. That is my first experience with them. They were great then and still are now, even more so! Did a real good job of explaining the differences in LOCs and DSPs Mark. Ought to be easier now for the folks to make choices!
I went with a JL TwK88 when I decided to make the switch to an active setup. So far I've been really happy with it.
Is that LOC expensive? How many channels?
I'm using the Hertz H8 DSP. Watching your videos over the years gave me more knowledge & I'm very grateful for that. I think I'm going to change my Hertz H8 DSP to Audiocontrol DM-810 DSP base on the fact that it seems to have more features & I love the idea of the Accubass.
You wanna trade my dm-810 with your hertz?
You did an incredible job explaining the Loc I appreciate this video because I watched other videos and didn't have a clue what they're talking about
Thanks for the great info just picked up that Lc7 because of your vids
I put my factory radio back in my TSX. I went with the LC2i & used the factory woofer wire for the input signal. I only needed to add a subwoofer amp. I also added a bass knob (not from Audiocontrol), in one of the knockout panels on the dash.
The bass is better than I thought it would be.
I first went with a lcq1 in my '18 jku when I added a four channel amp and focal speakers along with a Rockville db14 and 2 ten inch subs (stock head unit). I found tuning too overwhelming so I switched to a lc7i and it sounds awesome.
JL Audio Fix 86 and it’s worked well with my setup
Mark.... you’re a good guy! Thanks for all your videos man
Recently purchased a VXi amp for my system. Loving the DSP that comes with it.
Robert Reynolds love the display interfase. So intuitive. I have the twk.
This is an excellent explanation of use of DSP vs line Out converters!! Thank you team:!!!
I have a Helix P SIX DSP MK2. Great addition to my system...
Great video! You answered all of my questions I had about them both. Thank you !!!
I started with the lc2..now I'm using the lc7 and I have no complaints but I can see the glory of the tuning capabilities of the DSP!!
another tremendous CAF video. very helpful and well-done.
Great video, thanks. If I had 1/4 of your knowledge, that would be great. In the middle of a 14-stock-speaker Bose integration, smh. Nightmare. Using lc2i, 2 JL and 2 Memphis amps, focal/Kenwood excelon/JL speakers. Your videos were SUPER helpful for wiring and selections. Was able to utilize knu conceptz quite a bit.
Mark... This is perfect timing and a great informative video.
I've been planning my build for a 2019 Ram 1500 with the Alpine system. Based off this video I now know that I need a DSP instead of simply a LOC as I plan to upgrade all the speakers and add subwoofers. Thank you sir, this has been very helpful!
I’m running the LC2i shown here in my 2017 Tahoe with the Bose factory system. It works great with the JL amp. Couldn’t be happier!!!
I am using the lc2i on the Bose system in my 2013 Cadillac, on a incriminator audio ia20.1 and a stereo integrity hst12mkll, and I am well pleased with how well it blends together.
Thank you for all your videos, really helps me out. I appreciate it.
You do a great job explaining topics. I am trying to figure out a change for my upgraded 2014 F-150 Sony system. I upgraded the speakers then upgraded the head u to to Sync3 but lost ability to use the center dash speaker and surround sound. It seems upgrade wiped out my surround sound feature though I gained Apple car play. Now I’m thinking about replacing either the Sony/ford DSP or adding a LC.. This video helped me understand more about the differences.
Installed the lc2 because I wanted the stock look on my caddy DTS love it and now I have that bass with clean sound and look
Helix DSP Pro Mk2 in one vehicle and JL VXI in the other. Both are great as is all the Audiocontrol products. We definitely be trying out the D amplifiers from them soon.
Man.. you are a standard of how UA-cam videos should be done
Alpine pxa-h800 dsp. That is a badass DSP! So much control. Dead quiet in the soft music and clear and controlled loud music. Perfect sound after time correction, x-over and equalizer settings. So happy with it!
Does it have reverb settings like concert hall in the old dsp's?
@@bsmbBI don't think so but I've never added reverb to music so I've never looked for it.
This really helped! Thanks for the knowledge!
man you're carrying the car audio industry on your back
That’s the truth!
I installed the LC2i in my wife's 2013 Mustang GT, and I have absolutely no complaints about it.
I actually watched this because I have the same car, good to know. What speakers are you using?
@@toddmichon I installed Rockford Fosgate Punch series 5.25" components in the doors and rear deck. The subs are two 8" Kicker L7s. Amps are one Rockford Fosgate Power 400-4 and one Power 1500-1bd.
@@brianwalters5911 Sounds nice, a little more than what I plan but anything is better than stock. :)
@@toddmichon Absolutely. I can't leave any vehicle stock. I always upgrade the stereo system, appearance, and performance. It's an expensive addition. 🤣
Audio control and all of their difrent products are not exactly the most cost friendly items. BUT they are in my opinion some of the best out there!! Absolutely love their stuff. It looks awesome simple clean and compact and sounds amazing. Just the 2 channel loc you would not think would make that much of a diffrence but they do! I had a standard whatever brand in my car and it worked just fine. Wasnt active or anything, I switched to the audio control and it was shocking the difrence it made. Not going to run anything else in my cars anymore!
Fun this video posted today as I'm installing a lc7i today. lol
Thanks, bro.
U just saved me a ton of money.
I had the Lci6 in my Bmw with pro idrive non amplified, I specifically bought it for the summing feature & although good it wasn’t quite good enough. The bass would roll off quite quickly. Changing to a Dsp made a big difference I’m my case.
The audio control LOC only go down to 35Hz.
I have an LC6 in one car and an LC7i in another, both doing the job very well of adding subs and components to the factory media system. I would like to get a DSP for the next SQ build I do, I feel all that extra control and processing needs the hardware down stream to make it useful.
audison f8.9 dsp it was the best choice for me .my car had stock sound system i managed to install the original subwoofer and center speaker ,everything controlled with the audison
Audio Control stuff rules. Dig that they are a sponsor.
Running LCQ-1 has an easy to use eq sounds great.
Great video 👍....I currently have a JL Audio FIX 86 with a RD 400/4 and RD 500/1 .....❤❤❤my system!!👍👍
The RD amps look great.
@@andrewthetruth working out great for me 😎
I'm running the jl fix and the jl twk. Love those things!!!
Why do you need both. How would just the JL fix sound without the JL twk.
@@devinwright1467 it sounds plenty find with just the fix, but the twk allows for fine tuning, time alignment...basically anything and everything I could ever want. The twk is my dsp, the fix is more of a line out converter on steroids...together they make a harmonious union. The twk just picks up where the fix stops
Currently have lc7i in my 08 Acura TSX. But I also just picked up the JLAUDIO Fix 86! So debating on installing that.
I run a Hertz h8 dsp in my car. Using time allignment and crossovers :)
The LC2 pro looks pretty sweet!
I chose a DSP--integrated into the amp. Jlaudio VXi.. 1. SPACE 2. One part--vs-LOC+amp 3. Networking of the amps..
When will you do a audio install utilizing VXi technology?--(I can provide you the car for ya.. hehe).. YOUR work is Amazing..
Phase 1 - LOC just to get in some emergency bass. Phase 2 - DSP when ready to rewire everything.
FYI....I have used the LC2i in both my 2018 Kia Forte and 2020 Kia Soul. Signal Sense doesn't work as there is always a signal/current in the speaker wires for some reason and the amps nor the LOC will turn off. This is no fault of Audiocontrol, but just want it known that Signal Sense isn't always an option depending on your vehicle I'm sure. Btw, the LC2i works great otherwise.
Yeah some systems require use of the remote turn on. AudioControl is releasing a new pro version of the LC2i soon that has more options for this.
At a 3rd of the cost of a DM810 and right smack in the middle LCQ-1 by audio control is a great option that's what i bought vs the LC-6 or 7i allows you to tune your music old school with knobs but not as much feature as a DM810
Great video! Answers many of my questions in a clear, understandable way as I’m researching the two options. Thank you!
A question: If I want a little EQ adjustment in the LOC format then would the DQ-61 would be a nice middle ground between an active LOC and the DSP?
I ran a LC7 a few years ago and was impressed by its performance. My Lancer's system needs a dsp and my Malibu SQ build will have the TWK 88. My first dsp, i really look forward to real time tuning capabilities. From this build out it will only be DSP's for me!
Alpine e800-dsp all in one amp and dsp solution. Set everything up initially, now need to go back as it’s all been run in, so will need tweaking again.
It’s great to be able to do it, but starts to eat your life trying to get it perfectly smooth lol
I would love a dsp. Just don’t have the money for it now. But as I build system I will be having it so I can add later. Will be running a 1200 and a 2500 amps with all new speakers and a pioneer deck. Second battery.
I have a PAC AmPro in my Hellcat because of its plug a play integration.
Simply adding a 12” Rockford subwoofer and amp to stock system in my ‘18 Nissan Rogue. Using the PAC LP7-2 LOC
Great vid
Can you make a video showing us your own car and its sound system please?
I have an 18murano with mono amp and 2 10' subs in the back... Going in this weekend to replace the 4 speakers in the front with stock head unit.. my sound guy was saying that I might need a dsp but will try to use a new eq/loc that he's used successfully lately... Let's see how it goes
Hey bud I'm a recent subscriber to your channel your videos are very helpful I was curious if you might be able to answer a question for me I'm running 3 comp kicker 12s is there a certain box style you would recommend for those to get the lowest bass sealed ported band pass etc ...any suggestions would be appreciated
Simple question. i think.
Dsp vs a few old school high qaulity manual slide or dial equalizers, stacked together?
If you dont need or want time alignment.
You can tweek on the fly from the drivers seat.
Just as good as a dsp??
I had to use dsp. Right now have T4 components running active. I realized that I didn’t like the passive crossovers set points. Right now I have a dsr1 but saving for a bitONE HD
One of trucks is new and I'm just adding some subs so I'm just using a pac loc, but my older truck use to be an spl vehicle an I'm thinking of going back and redoing it. This time with a dsp.
Thank you for the video. I have an old school DSP/Epicenter, made a huge difference.
Looking to add a 5 channel Infinity amp to a Bose factory system. It has HLI and says crossovers built in.
Is it still better to run the LC7 and RCA/LLI, or are their HLIs just as good direct ?
Thank you
I currently have the Mosconi 6to8 v8 but am switching to the 6to8 Aerospace on Friday.
I'm running a LC7i to an epicenter to my mamo amp and a 4ch JL amp
i was looking for a digital amp.. Till I saw this. I didnt know it was digital up to the point of still going back to RCA for transmission of amp. I would have thought by now (i'm 29 started with car audio early 90s) that we would be runnning fiber optic or the optical at least .. thanks for the video.. first install where I actually wanted to use stock radio on 2018 car
Neither just get you a high end Alpine with built in everything and a DSP and call it a day that’s what I did and I love it 3 way active is where it’s at. I’m loud yet still sound amazing at half volume, benefits of huge power being used sparingly everything is run easy so no distortion. I’m running focal KRX2 61/2’s the last generation not the newest ones off a DC audio 175.4@2 ohm so 250watts a channel or more lol 😂. Been going strong for 3 year but I do got the gain on channels 1-2 for the tweets turned to zero but it’s still loud. Now the mids are taking the whole 250 watts and loving it, amazing woofer. They are keeping up with 2 DC LVL4 12’s in a custom box from cherry man customs.
I currently have the LC2i installed just for a 12" sub in my 06 Lexus GS300. I tapped into the subwoofer channel of the oem amp to feed the signal to run this LC2i that goes into the 3k mono block amp. I just purchased 2 sets of components to replace what i have in the car now with a matching amplifier. My factory system has 4 6.5" mid-bass in the doors (rear doors have additional 1" tweeter each). dash has 1 3" center speaker, 2 2.5" or 3" full range and 2 1" tweeters. rear deck has 2 3" full range and used to have a 10" sub but i replaced that with a 12" in a proted box ( Thanks to CAF for the design of my ported enclosure!). what id like to know is what will i need to do to be able to add my 2 new sets of components (4 6.5" midrange/midbass and 4 1" tweeters) with amp to my system? i dont care about the other speakers in the car. Center and 3" full range will be removed . Also not really looking to go with the dsp. Any guidance will be greatly appreciated. .... Forgot to mention that my new mids and highs amp has built in OEM line converters up to 9v.
I use a Mosconi 6to8v8 DSP. Have thought about going to the AC 8-10 unit though.
I've got a couple classic imports with factory Clarion cassette stereos that still work and i'd really like to add a bluetooth functionality. I like that the LC8i has a aux input available but it would really be sweet if they offered a LOC with integrated bluetooth so i didn't have to run a separate BT receiver. Thanks so much for the explanations.
Go purchase an AudioControl D-6.1200, and you can power your whole system. You will need to order a BT24, but you will be amazed by what you get.
Off topic question/video request: Wondering how to put together a brazilian style audio system. Maybe a “How to” video/tutorial on this type of system?
Also, unless it has the additional features you talked about that these AudioControl ones do, buying a LOC is usually a waste of money since most amps sold these days have built-in basic LOCs.
Do you need a loc when the amplifier your installing has a sp line input on the back?
ARC AUDIO PS8PRO and HELIX DSPs are amongst the best available.
I have a question. I am planning on putting in an aftermarket amp and subwoofer as the stock one isn’t that great. I have 2 tweeters, 2 midrange speakers and a subwoofer in my cars rear deck. Which should I tap into for the input on a line output converter? Should I use all 3? Or would the signal going to the factory sub be enough.
Hi
Great channel. I have a quick question. I have a 2017 Ford Fiesta with a factory radio that doesn't play flac files , however I do have a Audison Bit 10 and Hertz Dieci splits which gives the car good sound quality, do I still need to install an aftermarket radio to play flac files or do I rely solely on the DSP to provide all the sound quality that I need? Thanks.
Hey, Thanks for all the great videos, do you make custom sub enclosures for sale? I want to add a small sub on my wife’s suv and love your work. Thanks.
he offers sub enclosure build sheets / blueprints on his website, some for free.
Wow that’s is great
Mark, can a regular head unit w rca's through inputs 1 -4 and digital audio player though digital coaxial inputs on this DSP?
I have a lc6i and for me it adds a ton of power to my amplifiers. I don't like that I can't use rca on the input side tho. Sound is definitely way better with it too.
Hello-I have a 2017 F150 with the non Sony Sync3 system. I'm thinking of adding a 50x4 Prime amp to my factory door speakers and a JL microsub powered by another Prime mono amp. I plan on keeping my factory HU. Will the LCQi be what I need to get a nice clear well balanced sound stage and retain all of my functions and door chimes back sensor etc?
Great explanation of these devises. Would you pass or buy on a used $90 lc7i ,I think it's a great deal but how can I go about testing it before I grab it
I have 2 questions, I will be installing my LC7i here in a week or so once I figure out the wiring of my 16 outback w/ harmon kardon system. What will I run into when it comes to splicing my high, mids and lowes, but leaving them connected to the factory speakers? Any degradation to the stock speakers? Will I have level issues through the LOC?
2nd since there is only summing on the first channel, should I still connect to the sub channel for accubass even though the amp will not be getting the full range signal from the the LOC? Or can i splice in mids to the sub line to help with that?
OK A 3RD! I noticed the LC7i RCA output voltage is rated higher than the input voltage for the RCA on my 1200.1 kicker amp. Is that an issue? I never knew that was a thing until I learned passive LOC have a low voltage which limits the amps ability to push a good signal to the sub which is why I started looking at active LOC's in the first place. I dont want to destroy my new amp.
As much as I want to upgrade all the speakers, the budget is limited, so I went with the LC7i until I get further into the build and it's a great starting point for my 2016 outback with the harmon kardon amp I think. But as you can tell, it leaves me with worrying about the levels of the input since they are all set to the HK equalizer. I want the best sounding system I can have currently and that means getting my JL Tw5v2 to sound the best it can with this current configuration.
Thanks!!
How did you go installing the LC7i? Based on my experience with a 15 WRX STI with premium audio, you could probably just connect the unit in parallel with the midbass drivers for the purpose of adding your own sub since the head unit doesn't seem to high pass the door speakers. Actually I couldn't believe how bad the standard tune on the premium audio system is. Not even a way to control the sub level independently.
I have a bluetooth receiver give rca signals to the ampflier on my 15 outback.Because I think a high-low
converter degrade the quality of sound a lot.
Awesome video. Liked and subscribed. Based on your video, I think I need a DSP instead of a LOC. Can you confirm? I have a convertible Mustang with an aftermarket sub powered by its own amp, and I have 8 speakers that I upgraded to Morel and they have their own amp. Thank You!
Im piecing my mobile audio system fir my 2018 Honda Civic Type R which like most new vehicles has it’s integrated infotainment system. I bought Audison AV 5.1 with the digital card to connect to the Bit one. The factory infotainment rear output diagram shows two coax digital output but not sure if I can use one for audio. Can you help me with this?
I'm using a LC7i which even it is overkill for my system because all I need is an LC2i but I got it for $60 so I'm taking advantage of the Accu Bass and Active LOC for my Skar DNR. I'd rather have the DM-810 but certainly am not going to pay $550+ for one.
I recently installed new door speakers and tweeters in my 2021 Honda Ridgeline sport. They sounded weak so I added a kicker key200.4 with dsp built in. I set it up in biamp mode to set the front sound stage but it still didn’t sound very good. So know I have purchased the audio control LC7i to feed into my kicker key. I have yet to install it and am curious if you think it will make a very big difference? Also should I continue to run the kicker in biamp mode or do you think I should wire it as a true 4 channel amp with the tweets and front speakers running parallel plus the back door speakers? I’m hoping this gives me the best of both worlds with the LOC, auto DSP and amplifier built into the kicker key…. Thanks for your videos!!
Can I use an analog to optical converter from head unit to dsp to try an eliminate rca noise? I'd use the ADC at the head unit RCA and run a toslink cable to the DSP then RCAs from the DSP to the amp. Have slight static and whine that I have not been able to resolve after years of checking grounds, and replacing components along the way. I've tried every other remedy known to car audio except for powering the head unit directly off the battery.
Great information I recently upgraded my factory head unit to a Kenwood DMX7706S and swapped out my stock speakers with JL GX608C component speakers in the front door (6.5" speaker with tweeter and crossover) and Alpine S-S50 5.25" speakers in the rear doors (I know, they did not have JL 5.25" speakers so went with Alpine). I would like to add a 4 channel amp for the these speakers and a 8" or 10" sub-woofer with Mono amp down the line at some point and wonder if a DSP would be a good investment for this setup?
Alpine doesn't suck. You would benefit from a DSP vs. the head unit in sound quality, yes. Since you don't already have an amplifier, it would be cheaper to get an amp with the dsp built in. The JL vx700/5i is the best option because it will run everything you mentioned. It will serve as your mono amp, 4 channel, and DSP, all in one.
any input would be appreciated, thank you
I have a 2005 Jeep Library any idea where I can install two amp’s in the truck. And a bass 12” inch sub?
i have the ability to flatten the EQ from the sync 3 system to getrid of the bass roll off. should i still use the LC7I that i bought and just not use the ACUBASS?
Hi Mark, I have a factory unit with 4 speakers (no premium sound), don't want to replace it, yet I want to add a powered subwoofer (Cerwin-Vega VPAS12ST).
Which Audio Control LOC do I need? Do I really have to install an amp if I am replacing the factory speakers with component speakers? Can you please advice?
Best regards.
Also, a 6 channel amp outputs 1-6 front stage 3 way system output 7-8 for rear fill and 9-10 for the subwoofer(s)?
Hello man I really enjoy you knowledge about car audio..I have a question I have 2014 Honda Accord sport ..I'm keeping my factory head unit but I'm replacing my 4 stock speakers and I have a four channel amp for them ..and I have a two channel mono amp for my subs ..will this dsp would be good for my set up ..thanks
Is there a way the LC7i can be set up to sum at least two of the inputs to send to the channel 3 output. The Sub output on my factory amp only plays 50hz and down and the other speakers cannot fill in the 50-80Hz frequencies properly so would also like to send the door woofers input to the output 3 for the sub to play, then apply a low pass filter on the amp. Is this possible?
Just installed my Lc7I. Used your wire ferrule suggestion. I feel so refined lol
Great video Mark!!! 👍👍👍 How would you compare the AUDIOCONTROL DM-810 VS the ROCKFORD FOSGATE 3 SIXTY.3 considering both are DSP'S??? In your opinion Mark which one is better to buy and why??? I personally think if a person is doing a real high end sound system they are better off using a DSP instead of just a LOC!!! They will get more out of a DSP then they would by just using a LOC!!! I guess if it's something simple and a small install then a LOC is ok to go with!!! When your going to be running multiple amps then that's when a DSP is much better to go with i believe!!!
Lc7i is great for my install needs just wish my car would function properly so i can run my mids and highs. Right now it only runs my sub
When using the LC7i will the fade and balance feature still work from your factory stereo?
If you wire correctly yes
How can I determine what is the Sony Sound System on a 2015 f150 factory amp output signal wires to splice and add a LC2I for an aftermarket amplifier?
