  • One of the biggest challenges with installing an aftermarket audio system into a new vehicle is retaining factory warning chimes, voice, nav prompts etc without having them be amplified and excessively loud, or without losing them all together. How was I able to get a high quality digital output out of my factory radio to send to my aftermarket digital signal processor and amps? Here's how!

    This video is exactly what I’ve been looking for. I just recently had an after market amp with DSP installed and specific sounds were amplified like crazy including my TURN SIGNAL.
    To my dismay this problem seems to be common but without having any solutions.
    This by far explains what I think my issues are.

    I tried to use the optical output for my 2012 Optima. I found the wiring diagram for the Infinity amplifier and took the digital signal out of the harness by cutting the wires before they came to it. I soldered on an RCA connector and connected that to my DM-608. It worked, but the function of the factory volume control was gone, as it controlled the output of the stock amplifier. A solution could have been to utilize an ACR-1 to control the output of the DM-608, but eventually I just used the full range signal given to the rear door speakers. For me, the headunit was lower priority, as I use a direct RCA to a Pioneer XDP-100R, which sounds fantastic.
    Great video, I've been interested in how this is accomplished for a while!

    That's a curveball for those installers that have not been active in the field for a while. Sheesh, car audio much like auto security is getting more and more complex. There needs to be more credit given to knowledgeable installers.

    Surely, if we can grab "chime" signals with these things, we can also in theory interrupt them and replace them with...other sounds. C'mon, you know you want spaceship noises when you leave the key in the ignition, and thumping bass for a backup sensor alarm! ;D

    Is this better or worse than the IDatalink Maestro stuff? I have a newer F-150 with the Sony system and had planned on picking up the signal after the stock dsp and sending that to the DM-608 I have. iData shows their AR will work for my truck but AC says they are still a couple months away from having everything ready. So if this is as good or better I'll just get this now.

      Depending on what vehicle you have you can use these on no Bose units. Pac claims they arent compatible, but they are. At least with the GMs they are. I have a 2018 Silverado with the Mylink but no Bose and I still use the Pac Ap4-gm61. Have had it installed since September with no issues.
      Look up Pac Ap4-gm61 in the UA-cam search and watch the video by 5 Star Car Stereo on the Amp Pro installed in a non Bose vehicle...

    I own a 2019 Durango with the 7in unconnect which is pretty much basic no subwoofer. However while I'm installing my system which consists of 3 amplifiers and a dm-810 I notice that when a speaker is disconnected from the uconnect system it literally shuts the output from that channel off and the only way to get it back is shutting off the power and reconnecting a speaker. This makes installing amplifiers impossible since it shuts off the output once the speakers are disconnected. However I have ordered a ampro hoping that it's the solution even though their website says that you must have a premium sound system and 2019 isn't listed as compatible. If anyone has the solution for this any comments are appreciated. Thanks

    • @CarAudioFabrication

      Contact AudioControl, they have a device called the LGD that can be used to trick the factory amp into seeing a load and thus keeping the input on.

    • @darrenbare9348
      @darrenbare9348 5 років тому +1

      @@CarAudioFabrication I got the Lgd but they only work if I disconnect them from the dm-810 turn the stereo on then plug them back in to the dm-810. If I leave them plugged in and turned the stereo on they do not show any output. It's almost like when they're plugged in to the 810 The resistance value must change which causes the stereo to not have an Output. So my next option is to buy some resistors and try them by themselves.

      This is what u need, except you need the Pac Ap4-gm61 Amp Pro model. I just did this upgrade to my 18 Silverado and my 18 Terrain Denali... worth the $350 price tag... but if ur just trying to simply add a subwoofer/amp Google LLJ Customs. They make a Bose bypass harness & ANC defeat harness that allows you to add amp/sub w/o any cutting/splicing and without the ANC causing problems. This is about $120-175. But it doesnt give you the options the Amp Pro provides as it's just 2 harnesses, but if just adding subs then it's a cheaper option.

      Yep. But like any hobby, it requires money to do it right. You can still have fun for cheaper, though! This video is more for people who are taking a deeper dive. For example, in high school in the early 2000s I spent all my money on cheap equipment and it was awesome. Once you age and get more money, you can start diving into this stuff. Money is all relative.

    • @CarAudioFabrication
      @CarAudioFabrication  5 років тому +7

      That's just your opinion. The ability to get completely flat, high quality optical out, retain all chimes and factory features, have a noise free signal, and keep the factory head unit is a HUGE VALUE.

      I think that most of y'all forget that Mark does high quality audio installations, not some "cheap DIY, save money and watch your car burn to the ground when you decide to save money by not having a fuse in your power cable" mumbo jumbo. You can get better (than stock) audio for cheaper too and I'm sure Mark has covered in his videos how to do it professionally. You should always remember that you get what you pay for; The PAC Audio unit was cheaper than I thought given that it retains all the factory features and plugs in to the stock harness making the installation easy and clean.

    • @csmitchell1113
      @csmitchell1113 5 років тому

      Not at all a waste. I went from an Audiocontrol lc2i providing signal to a Dayton Audio DSP-408 and swapped to an Amp Pro to provide signal to my DSP and the sound difference is night/day. These units fix the factory signal out to your amps/dsp. If you want to run active and use a DSP it's a must to have a clean/flat signal to provide to your DSP if you really want to correctly tune your system. Plus the ease of install and not having to cut/splice any wires is well worth it. You can pay $100s even $1000 for a new Head Unit or add 1 of these for $350 and basically turn your factory HU into aftermarket quality...
      Ignorance is bliss however so if u want to spend $1000s on a system, speakers, subs, amps but cheap out when it comes to providing a proper signal to those amps than by all means go ahead... it's your money being wasted.... Itd be like buying a $100K sports car & running 87 unleaded...

    Hey Mark.
    I have a question about the gain knob on a car amp and why it is not a volume knob (as most people think).
    I'm not sure that I got it right, so maybe you can correct me.
    The gain knob is not a volume knob because you find the sweetspot where there is no clipping / distortion, no matter how high you set the volume on the headunit.
    Once the gain is set, then you dont touch it anymore.
    Is that correct?

    • @MrAlexH9121
      @MrAlexH9121 5 років тому

      yup, it actually doesn't make sense to adjust it using oscilloscope or multimeter, yes it would match the headunit voltage UNTIL you adjust everything like lpf,EQ and so on because that will make the headunit voltage change, so gain is pretty much a voltage adjustment so that the gain of the amp raises equally to the volume of the headunit, to much gain results in amp raise it's full power before headunit reaches it's high and preferable volume so the amp distort

    I have a 2013 Dodge Dart with the Uconnect system as well. A simple converter from the factory subwoofer to my amp should work? I want to run 2, 10” subs on a 1000w amp.

      @jeremysmith4473 5 років тому

      If you have a factory premium audio you may have three different things to overcome 1) the factory crossover points may not be what you want with your subs and the converter cannot help that 2) the factory amp may be load sensing and shut off the channels to the sub if there is no load present so resistors may be needed and 3) some factory amps lower the bass the louder the volume goes to protect the sub meaning your signal would be lowered as you turn it up.

    when using the optical output for the PAC AmpPRO AP4-FD21, would you still use the RCAs for they system or does it take the place of them? I'm installing the JL Audio VX700/5i in my Ford Explorer. I see the Digital-Input for the amp accepts 2-channel digital audio signal from any optical (S/PDIF) digital output, with a sample rate up to 192 kHz. How does that work if I'm using all for channels plus the sub output as well? I'm referring to the tuning portion of the speakers? Thanks for any clarity you can provide me in this and if it's necessary with this app and my setup .
    JL Audio VX700/5i
    Focal Performance PS 165FX (front speakers)
    Focal PC 165F (rear door speakers)
    PAC AmpPRO AP4-FD21 Aftermarket Amplifier Interface
    JL Audio 8W3v3-4 (Sub)
    PAC APA-TOS1 (optional if it provides a better signal )

      You would be using the processor to differentiate the signal to the proper speakers when using optical. Volume would have to be controlled from the processor as well since an optical signal doesn’t send volume info. You would most likely lose the ability for fading and balance from the HU.

    Why don’t aftermarket manufactures like Kenwood and Pioneer make double din head units with TOSLink outputs? Only one I can find is this ugly Stinger head unit. I would like to run optical from my head unit to my DSP.

    @caraudiofabrication mark I am doing a similar install into a 2015 grand cherokee I am using the dm-810 and I want to order the pac module my question for you is when getting a text message with the phone blue toothed to the factory radio it reads "text message from (name)" very loudly and annoyingly before any upgrades will the module be able to turn that voice down also (it is a factory non-amplified system) from what I've been reading online I cant get a straight answer,
    thank you

    Hi Mark, How would I set max volume for the head unit when using the optical out of my Amp Pro? I'm going into an Audio Control DSP DM-608 and when I turn volume all the way up I never get a clip light.

    • @codester_d
      @codester_d 3 роки тому +1

      You wouldn’t be clipping as it’s just a digital signal. If it was analog first then it’s possible. No volume info is encoded into the signal either. It’s just 1s and 0s.

    Hi Mark,
    I’m also doing a Grand Cherokee speaker build. I saw in the videos for the GC that you had a Meastro AR and a custom DM-Link to the DSP. Was there a reason you changed to the PacPro system?

      You can use it and send signal straight to amps, no DSP needed, but obviously better performance if you do

    Hi...
    Sir there is some confusion in my mind about sealed and ported subwoofer enclosure, as I got sony xplod xs-nw 12002 subwoofer for my car but there is recommendation in manual for sealed enclosure, so what would be the best?

    • @inkdreaper874
      @inkdreaper874 5 років тому

      Depends on the subwoofers you use and music you listen to. Sealed, usually gives a clean, "bump" bass. Ported, usually gives more of a "boom" bass. Also, depends on how much room you have to play with. Ported boxes are larger than sealed. Moreover, back to the type of subs you use. Smaller woofers will usually give more of a "bump" bass. The larger the subwoofer, the more "boom" bass you will get. There are alot of variables involved with installing a sound system to your vehicle. Hopefully Mark will be able to clarify your dilemma.

    Hey Mark, does this still play the warning chimes and bluetooth calls through the same speakers as factory? I think the calls play through the center channel.

    • @csmitchell1113
      @csmitchell1113 5 років тому

      Yes and it gives u the ability to control how loud the chimes are. Some vehicles have settings that give u some vol control over chimes, but very minimal. These units literally let you mute the chimes if you so please. But everything plays thru the same speakers & works the same way it did before installing the unit.

    You can get optical out from a head unit to the DSP and Amp. Is it possible to get fibre optic connection to a speaker?

    Hi Mark, when using pac amp pro toslink to DSP, are you only getting left/right signal correct? So would be setup as mono and not stereo? If using the rca are you getting stereo?

    • @CarAudioFabrication
      @CarAudioFabrication  4 роки тому +1

      Left and right is stereo, you only need left right in car, its not like you are watching movies.

      CarAudioFabrication....I’m thinking about this the wrong way...if using the pac to dm810 with toslink is it you lose the ability to fade front to rear from head unit. Installing pac amp pro in Jeep Gladiator and wanting to add the dm810 and use the toslink but I thought you lose front/rear fade....affecting listening to say XM?? Love your channel too BTY...

    • @CarAudioFabrication
      @CarAudioFabrication  4 роки тому

      Yes you lose front to rear, but you could have different presets on the DSP that have the level of the rears reduced.

    Hey, Mark. So, the AmPro for Chevy Silverado only works 100% with the factory Bose system. You can still use it with the non-Bose system but apparently you run into funkyness whereby you lose stereo for AM/FM/Sirius/XM because you have to "sum" the channels (something that I don't really understand, yet.) They talk about it here, ua-cam.com/video/qhgWUylbQpY/v-deo.html. Do you know any way around that?

    hey mark, can you make a video on the installation on the navtv zen-v for the audi s3 or similar audi cars? its a brand new unit and is very pricey but its the only unit that works on the newer audi cars, MOST-150 systems. its an all digital optical output like your car. there was another company, mobridge, who no longer wants to support audi's newer cars and if you look up zen-v for the audi's there is little to no real information on the installation. you would be the first to really give us audi guys a showing on this unit. www.ceoutlook.com/2018/03/27/new-amp-interface-audi-porsche/

    Wow, I thought the microphones would be for hands free cell phone use, not to ruin someone from trying to upgrade their OEM stereo. What a bunch of BS from automakers who simply fail to offer a really good audio system in their vehicles. Most of which cannot compare to aftermarket radio stereo or surround sound systems. Or how about simply adding some insulation to stop road noise instead of fancy electronic gimmicks. What a joke, and thanks for the heads up!
