i'd really like to see this test with both trucks on the same tires... let's take the tire out of it. I think we can all agree the tire Toyota puts on the Taco from the factory isn't ideal.
@Maui Chris exactly what I was thinking. I'd like to see that slippery off camber hill climb again on the same tires to see how much difference the front locker on the Bison is worth.
Put some Falken Wildpeaks or KO2s on both & then duke it out. People in general just don't understand how important having good All Terrains. Experienced Off-Roaders do. I've done some serious off roading with both trucks & its all personal preference & KNOWING how to use the vehicle & picking lines.
@@David-rx2to exactly one comes with front and rear lockers, longer suspension travel, two different engines, choice of two-door or four-door, winch bumper, a rear bumper with recovery points, sliders, and a full set of skid plates.
@@Tiovergudo Toyota specifically stated it's not a snorkel. It's a high positioned air intake for desert. I mean I think we all know why they say that though. 😂
So the Bison has a rear fancy bumper and shocks but the it will drag and hit the shock mounts on everything due to the stupid mounting location , and hit the spare and rip off/ smash the exhaust pipe because of how low they hang (literally looks like the pipe is like 10” below the bumper at 6:55) Makes Sense!
9:41, "I'm not using crawl control" and then at 10:00, "I'm going to disable crawl control". I'm confused. Did you enable crawl control between 9:41 and 10:00 and withhold that information from the viewers? Or you choose not use a feature that could have helped you get over hill or is there another way to interpret what you said?
you mean the truck with the mud terrains (duratracs are quasi mud terrains) did better in the mud than the truck with all seasons? shocked face. Toyota needs to put some real tires on its TRD pro models.
Toyota used to put on their TRD models BFG All-Terrain tires but for some reason went with Goodyear for their 3rd Gen lineup which is honestly sad but if I HAD to guess, most people that buy a TRD PRO or Off-Road most likely aren't going to use it for what it was intended for.
My 2019 trd pro came with duratracs as a dealer option and ive taken it through all kinds of mud and hills with no problem whatsoever. Mine is also a manual 6 speed, its a beast off road
In the Toyota going up the hill you said "I'm not using crawl control." Then when it wasn't making it up the hill you said, "I'm takin it out of crawl control." ? So, did you start with it or without it?
Like it was it 4 low?...perhaps ..crawl designed for slow steady approach...in mid of climb...when tires normally start sipping cause of weight and gravity...🙆
I think he turned off ATRAC and not CRAWL CONTROL. There is usually a button to turn off ATRAC. When the truck feels the vehicle slipping sometimes ATRAC comes on. Some Toyota/Lexus vehicles don't give you the ability to turn ATRAC off.
@@colinp446 I have 2 serious custom toyotas, a tundra and a 2018 forerunner but my offroad champ is a highly modified canam x3. Because as good as the x3 is, an strictly manufactured built offroad utv it still needs mod to run like we run plus offroading any can happen and does. You always need a solid platform and after that it is up to you to build you vehicle to take the abuse of the terrain you roll in
They actually offer a decent nitto tire on the 4runner. Either way, the reality is that people who actually off road would replace whatever tires it comes with because they come with 30 inch tires. You gotta go with at least a 32 and a lift. If it came with 32s out of the factory I bet tires would be more relevant on the tacoma. As it sits people are going to throw out those small wheels regardless of the tire. But yes it's actually pretty pathetic that they don't already come with a better tire.
@Jim Bond Ford ranger at the top spot? Just seeing that gave me a good laugh and made my day. I don't know what you're smoking but it must be messing with your brain. Ranger and number 1 spot shouldn't even be in the same comment considering there shit reputation lmfao.
Fast forward to about 23 minutes. This is why I will never own a Ranger or Ford 4x4. My 93 Dakota was going strong at 300k miles when I got rid of it. A manual shift for the 4x4 that did what needed done. Didn't smoke, knock, or use oil. I can't say I've seen anyone have that kind of quality or durability for any Ford, Toyota, or Chevy. I'm a Chevy guy and would not buy any push button or knob shift for my next 4x4. I guess I'll buy a old used truck. P.S. if your truck rusts I've had 2 get 300k miles and not be rusted out its your fault. You didn't take care of it. The Dodge had no rust on it I used it for snow.
You will have to move to Europe - all midsize trucks (Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara, Mitsubishi L200, Mercedes X Class, VW Amarok) come with a manual transmission as standard.
@@thivakarsaravanamuthu4744 I'm sorry to inform you people are actually leaning towards the Frontier more because you can build a better offroad package for way less than a Brand new Offroad truck stock the jokes on you and Gas is the same across the Board anything with a V6 will eat gas stop being ignorant seriously
yup, as will Jeeps. Not to mention, when spending 40 plus grand on a truck its nice to get one that retains value cost less to own since they dont break at 100k yeah chevy thats you
Better test drive the ZR2 Duramax first. It may shock you. I drove one last week and it felt extremely sluggish and weak, and the old 6-speed trans. was clunky by today's standards. I was very surprised and how much I disliked that truck.
@@4-LOW although acceleration is not good when you are towing anything it feels a ton better than the 3.6 does. Z71 is rated at 7000lbs and ZR2 is rated for 5000. But with the diesel I wouldn't hesitate to hitch 7000lbs for short runs. The 3.6 on the other hand I get nervous just getting over the 4000 lbs mark.
At 308hp, the 3.6L is a blast to drive. Super responsive. 0-60 in 6 and 1/4 mile in the 14s. Super fun truck with lots of capabilities. Mine’s an 18 z71 and I picked it over the Taco because of the engine and tow capacity. The Colorado feels more roomy too. Both are great trucks... we’re a Golden Age for autos. Enjoy it while you can!
So somebody further down the comments was saying the ZR2’s Independent front suspension could not have a real front locker locker, so I looked it up! It is a true Eaton E locker in the front and rear.
It's like when people ask me which bourbon is the best. Everybody's tastes are different, so my favorite probably won't be theirs. If you like Chevy buy a Chevy. If you like the Tacoma buy the Tacoma. I think they are both great trucks. I have the Tacoma and the factory tires on the Tacoma really do suck for off-road.
I replaced the original tires on my Toyota trd offroad with bf Goodrich ko2 tires and it made a huge difference. Places I had trouble getting through are so much easier now. I did loose about 1 mile per gallon on the gas mileage though.
the factory tires are controlled by dot regulations and price. if you are going to off road in mud , you need to pick your own tires. so you are correct.
Not too many truck buyers are going to be interested in this kind of extreme (see what I can do) type of terrain. I'll take the reliability, resale and manual tranny of the Tacoma.
I drove both trucks extensively before I made my purchase. To be clear I drove the ZR2 duramax , not the bison and the TRD Pro. In the end for me I chose the the ZR2. It was just more comfortable for me to drive. It pulled better and felt more solid. I’ve owned Chevy and Toyota trucks in the past. I think they’re both great in their own right. ZR2 just got it right this time for me. Can’t go wrong with either IMO.
Either one would be cool to me. Hard to choose they both have advantages and disadvantages. I guess overall I would probably choose the Chevy to get the front and rear locker and better tires stock and more skid plates. I have a Toyota right now and it’s awesome and I love my manual transmission so I like that Toyota still has them .
@Michael Anthony -- Agreed. This link is not from a competitor to TFL, so I hope they don't mind my posting it. Watch the whole thing, it's worth it. It's an offroad rally. It's in a different language, but narration doesn't matter. ua-cam.com/video/10Ith-XUONo/v-deo.html
These are showcase vehicles that are shared amongst review channels. After watching the review of the TRD PRO 4RUNNER reviewed by their Canadian corespondent, I'm surprised that TFL is still allowed to test vehicles offroad! One of my favorite truck review channels because they're textbook, and not as crazy as some of us.
I just traded my Colorado for a brand new Tacoma TRD off-road I really loved the Colorado but I absolutely hated the 8-speed transmission had all kinds of trouble out of it
What I took away from this: 1) Neither are anywhere close to being worth $50K (explains slowing sales on Tacoma Pros with snorkel option) 2) Tacoma has a way better approach angle. It would be just as good in the mud with the right tire. Doesn’t need a front locker but it’s not a lot to add front air locker. 3)Bison has a lot more undercarriage protection but it doesn’t have logical design setup for things like a shorter approach angle than a normal ZR2 (seriously wtf?) and the exhaust (having to worry about smashing it?) They both look awesome. I own a 2018 TRD OR and unless you can’t live without Fox shocks (not expensive upgrade on an Off-road), a hood scoop that doesn’t do anything, some “cooler wheels” that don’t help performance, leather with stitching, still doesn’t help performance, as well as a slightly better sound system, save $8-12k and get a TRD off-road. If you’re gonna go with a ZR2, $5000 May be a worthy upgrade but don’t ever expect any decent fuel economy. It’s not made for that. It’s a toy. At least the TRD Pro is somewhat practical and is still a comfortable daily driver. I love both for different reasons.
Totally agree, plus you can get the TRD OR with the same exhaust as a ~700 option + living in Texas there is no world where I want leather seats (especially not this price range of leather). Just wondering where you got your TRD Pro grill for your OR? For me the two mods I would do on the OR are the grill (high priority) and if possible/right price the hood (even though it is fake I do like the hood scoop).
I currently driving the Taco daily, but I love the ZR2B ... Simplicity is a must, and a simple switch of Tires and BAM! The Tacoma Wins! But I Still Would Love To Have Both!!!
I bought a gas ZR2 a few weeks ago, that front locker is VERY nice to have on the super rocky climbs we have here in southern Utah. It is also nice to have a different truck, you can barely throw a stick around here without hitting a Tacoma of some type. (not that they are bad trucks - there are just huge numbers of them)
@@jonb2139 Simple availability, the ZR2 I bought had 12k miles on it, a six inch lift, 35's, Method bead-lock wheels, an onboard ARB air compressor, and was absolutely immaculate, not a single scratch on any skid plate (or anywhere else) - and I got it for rough 37k. I could have bought a brand new Duramax ZR2, and that was a huge temptation, but in my current financial state adding all of those parts would have not been possible for a while - plus I saved a fair bit of money in the process. I could not be happier with this truck.
@@ridingdeep8530 wow that's an amazing deal you got! I completely agree have to do what's best for the pocket book and you! I hope you love your new ride and if your ever in the Ontario Canada area I'd love to buy ya a beer and see your rig!
@@2011buddylee Thanks man, the heat (and crowds) of St. George are why we live in higher elevation (6,000ft) and less populated Cedar City to the north of SG. We love it here. Enjoy your ZR2!
Now that I've been driving my Tundra for so long I don't think I could ever go back to ford/dodge/chevy. I know the gas mileage is on the low side but I haven't had not one problem at all. I can't say that white the other trucks I've had. I always had trans or turbo ( eco boost) and or electrical problems.
I have to agree...I have a 13 Taco and other 2 Toyotas wife and I have had are hands down better than any FORD or GM we have owned. To be fair..my Taco needed new rear springs...towing a Roo Hybrid across Canada probably did cause extra duress on OEM springs...after market new ones seem to be much better. Other weak point is the brakes on my truck...hi performance rotors and pads seem to be better. So the engine and transmission is pretty well bullet proof. Toyota really does make a great product...if they continuously improve as they claim....then the future looks pretty bright for the brand.
seems like a good choice...Chevrolet has been making the best diesels for decades, best transmissions, and new for the Colorado, fragile as glass lockers...id lease that one and knowing Chevrolet they will stop making it after 8 years or so right when they got most the bugs worked out because they would have gained a lemon reputation by then and ...just like the last Colorado and the S10
Peetey - He is a troll. You see his shit all over the place and all he does is try to stir the pot and get people going. Definitely not worth your time.
You must live down south because accept for the junkyards they don't exist up here anymore. I had one and it was very reliable and one of my favorite trucks I had growing up. Definitely was the perfect size for a mid size truck but the salt here eats s10's for breakfast.
That snorkel is ridiculous. I'd rather get the TRD off road. Over 10,000 cheaper, no snorkel and with just 5,000 in you could make it better than the TRD pro.
Toyota’s 4.0 liter was great that 3.5 is crap. I used to have the 4.0 but needed a bigger truck. ZR2 has taken over as mid size off road king in my opinion. Toyota May sell more but the better off-roader is the Bison.
Id never spend that much money on a Chevy engine. Nothing beats a reliable toyota engine. As far as tires go, you could just replace the factory tacoma tires with some pro comp all terrain’s and you’d have a better truck than the Chevy. I love my 2018 Tacoma off-road.
I cross shopped everyone when I was looking for my new truck a few months ago. I didn't want the hassle of diesel, mainly because this state treats them the same as gas vehicles and on average diesel is 60 cents more a gallon... so there is almost zero benefit to having the diesel and you need inspections every two years after the initial 4 or 5 year sticker... so diesel was out. I eliminated the ranger almost instantly. It is nice... but they don't offer a crew cab long bed. That went out. I also think the outside is ugly but that's me. The ridgeline was also out. Just wasn't what I was looking for. It came down to one of the twins or the Tacoma. I drove the Tacoma and wasn't very impressed. It felt slower than the vehicle it was replacing... which had about 220k miles of me beating the absolute piss out of it and was confirmed to be down about 25 hp and about the same in torque from new. And then I drove the Colorado. I made a right turn off the lot and went down about 100 feet on one of the crappiest roads Jersey had to offer and basically asked where to sign. It felt like the trailblazer did when I got it. And I loved how that truck drove so to me it made sense. Are there things Toyota did better? Sure. But if it lasts 200k the way I drive then I'll be more than happy. A friend of mine had an 04 Tacoma when I had the 04 trailblazer too. The Tacoma started to kick his ass around 200k so they dumped it. The cost of ownership on the trailblazer was significantly less mile for mile than the Tacoma which we both found strange. The trailblazer is now a company vehicle running to our distributor picking up couple thousand pound loads. About half of its life was spent lugging around an extra 1500lbs of equipment in the cab. Can't really say I've had any bad luck with any of the big truck manufacturers... except dodge. They're just actual trash.
@@Dwealdric Yea. We got an 03 duramax 3500 dump heavily discounted when new. It was actually cheaper than the 04 6.0 dump we were also looking at. Thing is a beast. Headgasket actually just let out this spring though... it only took 3 years of a leaking water pump to out it lol. (No one besides me maintains their vehicles there)
@@Dwealdric If you lived in a place that you could tune and delete one of these on 35's with 4.56 gearing with 4" long travel kit kings, as I did, you'd change your tune REAL quick. I get 22mpg with 4" lift. Good luck getting 15 with anything else with a similar set up.
@@joel387ktm I had a hitch mounted utility chest weighing in at 500 lbs. Then 25 bags of pool salt, they weigh 40 lbs each. Then piping, power tools, hammer drills, fittings etc, replacement pumps. Then if I weren't doing that I could fit 5 liners back there with the box and they are roughly 250 each depending on how big they get. The shit I did to that truck most people wouldn't believe or try to do, doesn't surprise me at all you don't believe me.
Will forever buy a Tacoma. The Tacoma will hold its value way better and you won’t have any issues. With about 3 k in accessories and tires the Tacoma will be way better off road.
Ryan M A bunch of friends and family bough X-Terras and frontiers in 2002, and although they looked cool I bought a 2002 Durango. Not as off road worthy but I can tell you that those Nissans are long gone and my Dodge is still going strong at 190k. Exhaust rotted out, some replaced it twice. They just fell apart and my Dodge still looks like new, even after lots of off roading. Lastly, steer clear of those CVT transmissions, I don’t think they use em on trucks but Nissan makes the worst in the industry since being bought by (Renault?)
@@toddroush6944 2002 was first generation for both frontier and xterra. We're talking about the current D40, which is simple and solid and not to mention torquier than every other gas V6 with its VQ40. I think you'll find that with Dodge, the exact opposite has happened in terms of reliability; you couldn't pay me to drive a new Durango, which isn't even a good ol' fashioned SUV anymore.
Yeah, I think the Pro-4x looks good and is good off-road. There are 2 big things that keep me away though. 1- capability numbers. 2- crash testing results. It does very poor with both. The crash testing alone would keep me away no matter the price or how cool it looks. So I would stick with one of these, " undeniably" cool trucks. Save your self a bunch of money and get the regular Zr2.
The only thing you were really comparing here is the tires, and I'm happy you called it out more than once. Throw some duratracs on the TRD pro and do a comparo. I'm sure neither would have had issues on that course.
Overall good video. But still biased in favor of the Bison. Clearly the Tacoma has a lot better ground clearance as the Bison was dragging several times where the Tacoma wasn’t . Tires are definitely the difference here, but doesn’t mean the truck is less capable. In fact most videos on UA-cam I’ve seen, the Tacoma goes up everything the front locked ZR2 does. Driver plays a major role along with knowing how to use the gadgets properly. Another thing not brought up is reliability of the vehicles, which factors into ownership costs and experience. And Taco has a manual!
PickupTruck Plus Suv Talk has a video on his channel of the Bison climbing a ledge that there's no possible way a Tacoma is getting up without destroying the front end. A Jeep Rubicon JL or Ford Raptor is not even getting up that ledge without destroying something!
My heart is devided🥺 but I would still buy the Tacoma. I know what these truck can do, they are popular for a reason. No one can tell you until you own a Toyota. My driveway is all Toyotas except the one company provided Ford. In my opinion Toyotas just keep surprising when put to the test.
Taco drives wont mention that at all. Just looked at these and there are a lot of other vehicles in the same category that are more comfortable. I was shocked. Felt like my ass was on the floor boards. Back seat was not bad though.
Danny V are you short? Seems like short people are the only people who generally say they are comfortable. I’m a Toyota guy but they need to fix the interior space and setting position in the next generation.
It is consistent use what comes stock. If you want to use the same tire Bison would still be a better truck. Diesel or V6 it has better power plant and a front locker.
@@bmartinez2086 It's silly to compare vehicles using different tires. The tires will eventually be replaced on any vehicle sooner or later, so limiting a comparison to stock tires makes no sense. As far as which one is 'better anyway', I guess we'll never know because no one ever compares them with equal tires, and then throughout the years they're constantly saying things like 'of course I'm sure the different tires are affecting the results a lot too,but I don't know how much, so you have to take that into consideration.' Absurd.
Tacoma’s have a great reputation for lasting a long time and the aftermarket scene is great for them . The competition hasn’t provided a long lasting vehicle . Off road or not . Not many people at all need the comforts of lockers or crawl controls . So the sales for a Tacoma will out do the competition due to reliability over all not their capability off roading . These reviews show a few miles of a vehicle doing things many owners will never do . The other 98% of mileage is done on pavement .
After 25 yrs on the actual trails(not dirt roads or Walmart parking lots) I've seen around 40% Jeeps, 40% Toyota, and 20% others. Rarely stock tires/suspension on any of them.
But the new Tacoma hasn't been as reliable, even compared to the big three. The Ranger is also going to give it a run for its money if they hold together.
I like the new Bison, but for long term reliability and real world usage, my Taco TRD Off-Road is more than truck enough for me. That said, I hope that Toyota gives future buyers the option of a front locker and an upgraded engine.
Im a Toyota fanboy. But I would go with the Zr2 Bison. Tacomas are EVERYWHERE!! I see them all the time in my city. And the Colorado has front and rear diff lock and looks better and more comfortable imo
@@scott8238 agreed, but the true benefit is keeping the Toyota well beyond when it's paid for and experiencing a bunch of trouble-free miles. I can tell you now after a year of ownership of a 4Runner, I really miss my truck. Just got back from Lowes with a prehung door and a few 2x4's stacked on the roof. The 4Runner is more practical for passengers and shopping and stashing tools securely, but it's no substitute for a bed. I think I may need to get a third vehicle.
peter saler year ago i would go toyota not now the NTSB has had many complaints on the taco even 2019 complaint of brake engine drive train recent pass year lots of complaint filed brake failures engine speed control my last toyota pickup was a 1984 22r engine at the time got rid of it had over 308 thousand miles only maint. was two clutches timing belt brakes the new one wont do that
Well I got 46k miles on my 2019 TRD off road live on 300 acers on northern California and spend half the time on dirt roads and this truck as well as my others never have let me down gas oil tires I love Toyota trucks GM vehicles on the other hand I personally have had nothing but problems I'm a firefighter and a lot of our rescues and utilities are GMC and there constantly in the shop for something my favorite they always have lights out infact we got a new one dealer plates on it still and a running light out lol
I've been shopping for trucks for a while and it seems like Chevy prices their trucks higher than they expect to sell so that the customer feels like they got a deal. Maybe it's just me though.
I picked up the 2019 Canyon v6-4x4 extended cab base model, which came with a nice amount of features. I have Apple CarPlay, a pretty decent six speaker stock audio system, spray-in bedliner, tow package, those GM bumper steps are super useful, base model 16" wheels have very meaty tires. It rides nice, good power, very comfortable. Only issue I had was a deer ran full speed out from nowhere and smashed into the side of the truck. I now have a 2019 Nissan Frontier as a long term rental car right now, and while it is small, the turning radius feels worse, the ergonomics aren't that great, the center armrest is useless because it is too far back, the stock infotainment system is awful, and the bed is so tiny and shallow. It's easier to park in spaces, the seats a little more comfortable, the stock radio is pretty decent too, the quality of the handsfree phone is good, and while definitely not faster, the Frontier feel a lot better off the line than the Canyon (I believe the Frontier has much better torque down low).
The lockers really put the zr2 ahead of the Tacoma. If you can avoid using momentum and 'your right foot' you are less likely to damage your expensive truck. We saw the difference during the muddy hill climb. I'd take either one though. I have a Colorado LT (4 wd) and am looking for a easy trail capable rig.
I'm not saying you are wrong because you aren't. But I think the biggest difference is actually in the tires. In mud more than anything is where tires make a huge difference. Also while the tacoma doesn't have a front locker it has terrain management and will monitor wheel slippage and apply the brakes to the tire that looses traction sending power to the wheel that needs it and it's pretty fast. The only problem is that tfl never turns that feature on. Btw lockers are better though, I'm not arguing that.
they’re still 10-20 grand cheaper than a full size with decked out packages. TRD pro Tundra is around $50,000 and TRD pro tacoma around $40,000. in general all vehicles are overpriced.
Out the door with $1000 down I bought the duramax ZR2 loaded (Bose sound system , navigation, upgraded floor mats etc) for $38,600. I guess I was lucky with all the incentives I was given. I shopped around for about 6 weeks before I received this deal. It can be done.
What is the profit margin from the factory on these? What does it cost to build them? If you dont know this information you cant make that statement. You get what you pay for.
Howdy Andre’! IMHO I’m gonna go with the Colorado ZR2 Bison! As I own a new Colorado W/T Crew Cab 4x4, V6 I found on a lot with everything I need and nothing I don’t! After 3 y 9 months trouble free and 68,000 miles of adventure camping an commuting with a 2016 Colorado Z71,4x4, V 6 Ext Cab. My new one in white will be a nice blank canvas for building my own. The dealer installed the boron skid plates for me, that and with the Factory Tow Package, Convenience Package and Appearance Package all for just under 32k! All I need now are some high grade front Coil Overs and rear air bags with matching high grade rear shocks, so I will be able to tow my 22’ Travel Trailer nice a level! Then get some of those nice Goodyear Duratrax tires at least 32” tall. I must say something about that Tacoma, that Snorkle is cool, but with a fake air scoop on the hood too? Plus that truck needs some real tires! Those are just like the ones that came on mine!
Nice review, but with things like the muddy hill, try it without the lockers, then just the rear, then the front so we can see the differences these features makes. He's compare apples to apples and see the differences tires makes as well.
The comparison was truck to truck, how you buy them. It wasn't a tire comparison or a locker comparison. This was a fair comparison between the whole trucks.
Andre…don’t just parrot the nonsense about u can’t find the 4wd knob. It makes u sound like a knob and like u r 80 and can’t remember where u put ur underwear…
In 1988 my Landcruiser was purchased, 33 years later she's still rattling along beautifully. That's my problem... the Toyota name, reliability and quality in making offroad trucks. Hence why I purchased a 21 Tacoma Pro.
Andrew Smith oh my god. You’re Andrew smith and you responded to my comment. OMG OMG OMG. You almost never comment and when you do you are always so informative and never condescending. OMG. I’m never going to wash this phone again!
Thivakar saravanamuthu it’s like he thinks the measure of a vehicle is based solely on horsepower. Can anyone we that stupid? I’m hoping that he writes back again and we can find out. Lol
Then how come the video at the end the driver didn’t have any issues going up? I think it was driver error my Tacoma off road can go just about anywhere with these stock tires
Those are the worst tires, on the Tacoma, to do off-roading on wet areas. Had similar experiences like yours, here in WA state, so I got rid of the tires at 2K miles. Didn't want to risk it anymore. Got the Toyo Open Country, and it was like night and day difference. A front locking differential would definitely help in some situation, but I am able to do most terrains with just the limited locking front differential. Tires, tires! Makes a lot of difference compared to all terrain. And, when you air down some more, it is quite close to locked 4x4 system.
Thanks Andre, I was waiting for this comparison for quite some time. Saw you and Nathan at the AEV booth in Flagstaff, but you were busily interviewing. Would have loved to say Hi. QQ: Why do you guys at TFL seem to activate lockers always so early where it is not needed yet at all? That's probably just me, but with my JK I try to avoid lockers until absolutely necessary. Never broken anything and especially in mud the vehicle goes where I want compared to with lockers, where the vehicle goes where it wants. Just my 2c as otherwise you guys are cool. Love the Ike gauntlet comparisons too.
I just got a 19 TRD Pro with the GoodYear Wrangler tires. There is good news and bad news for the Wranglers. Good news is that they perform the same in Mud, snow, wet roads and sand. The bad news is the suck in all of them..
Great add for Chevy!! Did anybody notice. In the last obsticle he got plenty of speed om the chevy and with the Tacoma he actually stopped just before the hill... Nice try buddy !
Not big fans of these guys every Toyota truck they do, most of the time they never have nothing much good to say about them, I would choose Toyota anyday over these trucks. Our Tacoma has 187,000 miles and never been in the shop.
Big Rig Truckers are always talking smack about Mid-Sized Truck Towing. I'm just an Old Deer Hunter & Scuba Diver; so, I just need to tow my 3 wks worth of Deer Camp, with Gas & Food. I keep it light; so, I can blow by all the big riggs on the freeway. That way they always ablidge when I give them the Blow Their Horn Request!!! LOL
Brian Richner 5000 pounds isn’t bad for a mid size truck. If you’re towing more then that you should get a half ton. And the ZR2 did the gauntlet in 8 min flat with the V6. Perfect score.
MTS needs to be engaged for the auto lsd to work for the front of the Tacoma or otherwise it defaults to open diff with lockers engaged. ECT PWR is also better for 4wheelin because the transmission holds the gears. Also, it is good to learn when to take traction control off.
In all the videos they always just hit the locker button. I always comment that they also need to turn on mts for the front to have that auto lsd feature but they obviously never read the comments lol. There's been a couple of times where you can just see the one front tire spinning and the other one has all the grip and they just give up and say it didn't make it. I'm like TURN ON TERRAIN SELECT!!!!!
Brian Richner yea. Buts let’s be real most people buying these will never use the rear locker let alone a front. And those that do the type of wheeling where they would normally make use of a front locker would just add one to the Toyota if that’s what they really wanted. Don’t get me wrong it would still be cool if they put a front locker in the Taco. And real tired. Not sure why they only put decent tires in the 4R Pro that at least gets Terrra Grapplers
Josh Tavenner I think with better tires the taco would have done better than the zr2 bison, it’s lighter and better ground clearance. But regular zr2 with a small lift would be a better option.
The 2nd Gen had at least BFG Rugged Trails stock on the TRD Off Road, and when the original TRD Pro was made, they had BFG KOs which was great. Toyota is tryna milk that MPG but putting these street, dirt road only worthy tires. Love my 2012 Off Road though w/ 90K mi, runs like new.
@@JA-rn5qv Yeah, for 20 grand more...you can add less than 10 grand in upgrades to the Toyota and still have a better truck than GM "Government motors" crap!
I can't help but think that you'd be better off building your own rig than paying thru the nose for these factory off road specials. 4wd/Crew Cab/V6/4WD SR Tacoma is $32,000. TRD-PRO is $45,000 Colorado LT V6 gas 4wd crew cab aprox $35,000, with diesel its $41,000 Colorado Bison MSRP with diesel $51,000 I'm also thinking your local dealer will give you a way better deal on the lower trim trucks, those top trim models they might have just a few allotted to the dealer and they usually sell for or very near MSRP.
Nailed it. I got a great deal on a TRD offroad, so I got that. A 2 inch lift and some toyo all terrains make it an absolute blast, capable, and also comfortable for a daily driver. Ive put over 18k on mine already since October.

Different uses for different people. These are designed for the off road enthusiast who needs a compact truck and maximum capability. Practically wise you'll get more use from a 50K full-size, but won't be as capable off road.
@@thepeddle That's just bullshit. I'm 6'2" and have no problem at all fitting into my ZR2. It's the most capable off-roader that Chevy makes, they aren't over priced. Unless you're buying a Power Wagon, no full size truck is as capable off-road.

People arguing about the tires miss a couple of points. The ZR2 has front and rear lockers. The rear locker can be used in 2wd, Toyota rear locker is 4low only, and you need to stop, neutral, engage 4low, then lock rear. My experience has been a locked rear in 2hi or 4 hi helps avoid needing 4 low locked in the first place. The Toyota crawl assist appears to be a gimmick when the engineering cost versus a front locker is considered. I am a Tacoma fan but I believe ZR2 beats the Pro. The Bison package may be worth it if you want a factory skid plate, winch mount option but the aftermarket usually surpasses factory in that realm.
It's really not even close. Toyota knew they had a great truck in the Taco but got lazy and slipped. The regular ZR2 is hands down better than the Taco TRD Pro.
But it’s based on the zr2 which is a few years old and more proven. Just has some extra exterior bits on it for protection, i.e. the skid plates, the bumpers, and the rock rails. That’s about it, nothing changes internally
Dude! How much did Chevy pay you? LOL You weren't stuck so why did you use the Taco's crawl control uphill? Why did you not get more of a head start before heading uphill like you did the Chevy? Those Chevies look nice until their warranty ends then they'll be lucky to making up a hill on the interstate.

RVG1 nah, I’m happy with my truck, just calling it as it is. It’s the most common complaint people have about the Tacoma. “The powertrain is gutless”, “they should’ve kept the 4.0”, “it doesn’t have enough power”, “you have to rev the engine way too high to feel like you have any kind of power”. It all says the same thing which is the Tacoma just can’t keep up, regardless of how bulletproof or not it is (which is apparently also up for debate based on many peoples’ experiences)

Wish y'all would swap the tires to the same ones. I know they come from the factory like that but no true off roader would keep those tires and it would even out the competition and truly be about the truck.
Front locker and diesel gonna out perform all day. That being said I’d still pick tacoma for reliability. Do another run with the same tires too I mean come on.
Once Toyota finishes their new Tacoma factory in Mexico this year to move more assembly away from Texas with about 75% production from Mexico, that will make the decision even easier.

i'd really like to see this test with both trucks on the same tires... let's take the tire out of it. I think we can all agree the tire Toyota puts on the Taco from the factory isn't ideal.
@Maui Chris exactly what I was thinking. I'd like to see that slippery off camber hill climb again on the same tires to see how much difference the front locker on the Bison is worth.
It's a test between 2 stock vehicles. That includes the tires that come with the vehicle.
Put some Falken Wildpeaks or KO2s on both & then duke it out. People in general just don't understand how important having good All Terrains. Experienced Off-Roaders do. you mean the truck with the mud terrains (duratracs are quasi mud terrains) did better in the mud than the truck with all seasons? shocked face.
Most people who buy Toyota aren’t going off road. They need highway tires.
My 2019 trd pro came with duratracs as a dealer option and ive taken it through all kinds of mud and hills with no problem whatsoever. Mine is also a manual 6 speed, its a beast off road

Yes, I heard the same thing. I assume that crawl control was on because he seemed to reach and disable it after failing to make the climb.
I think he turned off ATRAC and not CRAWL CONTROL. There is usually a button to turn off ATRAC. When the truck feels the vehicle slipping sometimes ATRAC comes on. Some Toyota/Lexus vehicles don't give you the ability to turn ATRAC off.

I just traded my Colorado for a brand new Tacoma TRD off-road I really loved the Colorado but I absolutely hated the 8-speed transmission had all kinds of trouble out of it
Is this the first time that this guy has been off road? He talks about needing momentum and comes to a stop right before the hill in the Tacoma
Was thinking the very same thing
What I took away from this:
1) Neither are anywhere close to being worth $50K (explains slowing sales on Tacoma Pros with snorkel option)
2) Tacoma has a way better approach angle. It would be just as good in the mud with the right tire. Doesn’t need a front locker but it’s not a lot to add front air locker.
3)Bison has a lot more undercarriage protection but it doesn’t have logical design setup for things like a shorter approach angle than a normal ZR2 (seriously wtf?) and the exhaust (having to worry about smashing it?)
They both look awesome.

The Nathan method never fails!
Can you get the bison package on the extended cab long box zr2? Some ppl say bison only has a 5ft bed but the Chevrolet website says otherwise.

Not TFL's fault Toyota equips their "offroad" vehicles with street tires...
⃠ no argument, and I’m not blaming tfl. ;)
No mention on how out dated and uncomfortable the Taco is to actually drive.
Taco drives wont mention that at all. Just looked at these and there are a lot of other vehicles in the same category that are more comfortable. I was shocked. Felt like my ass was on the floor boards. Back seat was not bad though.
Idk I have a 19 Taco and it's comfortable for me. I guess comfort is subjective.
Danny V are you short? Seems like short people are the only people who generally say they are comfortable. I’m a Toyota guy but they need to fix the interior space and setting position in the next generation.

I think they are both great. I would go with the tacoma only thing i do not like is those tires, I would change those right away.
Crayola Video camera no excuse for those tires on that truck.
David Nalls yea there really isn’t, I would not mind one bit paying a little extra for better tires. It would greatly improve the truck
I wish somebody would do a comparison of these 2 trucks using the *same* tires on each one. Every experiment needs a constant.
They are testing how they come from factory. So it’s a fair comparison. Keep crying
Who else noticed the Bisons exhaust pipe and spare dragging the mud due to lack of ground clearance at 2:22
oh no the muds gonna ruin the steal exhaust pipe :o lol u reaching
Nah, you're right. It's a diesel thing. The gas exhaust doesn't sit near as low. Just ordered the bed mount for the spare tire in my Bison from AEV.
Yeah a great reputation...for frame rot.
Lol
After 25 yrs on the actual trails(not dirt roads or Walmart parking lots) I've seen around 40% Jeeps, 40% Toyota, and 20% others. Rarely stock tires/suspension on any of them.
But the new Tacoma hasn't been as reliable, even compared to the big three. The Ranger is also going to give it a run for its money if they hold together.
@@alabama2uz dang we're do you live here in South East Texas there all on Pavement I have not seen no truck but Jeeps on the trials here
I like the new Bison, but for long term reliability and real world usage, my Taco TRD Off-Road is more than truck enough for me. That said, I hope that Toyota gives future buyers the option of a front locker and an upgraded engine.

But chicks dig snorkels and know nothing about tires.
If the Starbucks drive thru is flooded after a gully washer the snorkel will come in handy
Both great trucks but I will say in N Colorado I have seen a bison with a big discount on it whereas the Tacoma TRD Pro has an addendum of 4K.
I've been shopping for trucks for a while and it seems like Chevy prices their trucks higher than they expect to sell so that the customer feels like they got a deal. Maybe it's just me though.
lightning warfare69 The Tacoma will hold its value much better than the Colorado.
Chevy may be on the cutting leading edge of technology but there also always on the edge of falling apart😂
Both are overpriced for a mid sized truck.
Sean Stewart Agreed
they’re still 10-20 grand cheaper than a full size with decked out packages.
M Schoenfuss funny , I just out $1000 down and picked up a TRD off-road for 37,000 did not go for the TRD pro.

Maximilian R , I put on the Toyo as well. It was a revelation on my off road trips

Just needed better tires. I just bought the same trd pro 2 weeks ago and love it
When does the TFL Team get to do the Gauntlet Towing Test with the Chevy Colorado AEV Bison?
Those tires are a big help. C’mon Toyota put some ko2.
They definitely missed the mark on the tires, first thing I changed on my TRD offroad
KM3s or STT Pro would be nice on the Tacoma.
The Chevrolet has the added benefit of not looking hideous.
That’s all opinion I think the Tacoma is much better looking and sportier than the zr2
TRD with street tires? Unfair!
Both vehicles are exactly as they come from factory. It's not unfair at all.
Blame Toyota. Both trucks were ran as they came from the lot. GM just equipped the Bison better for it's use.
@@JA-rn5qv Yeah, for 20 grand more...you can add less than 10 grand in upgrades to the Toyota and still have a better truck than GM "Government motors" crap!

And a front locker. And torque.
