I am glad you mentioned the lack of towing mirrors. In the 80s, I remember that some 1/2 ton trucks had large rectangular towing mirrors and I still love the look of rectangular mirrors. It is annoying that these automotive manufacturers are bragging about how much their trucks can tow but do not offer a trailer mirror as an option. I have towed trailers in city traffic, and without trailer mirrors, you can't see the outside edge of the trailer fenders, and it makes navigation in tight spaces dangerous. Anyway you could review a regular Colorado z71? Not as many good reviews on it. It can tow more and can still do some off roading! Especially with the duramax and air dam removed. It's just not as flashy
I'm always back and forth about the switchable front locker. If you're going straight, it's wonderful, but you can't really steer with it on. Then there's also the aspect of having to switch it on and off while trying to pay attention to what you're doing (usually with a rear locker you can turn it on and forget about it off road). I tend to prefer either an autolocker on the front, or a torsen. Just so that you can still steer modulating power, or when you inevitably get a wheel off the ground. I lean more towards a torsen as it is in fact a differential all the time and not either open diff or spool. You can tap the brake to get the torsen to lock up enough to get power to the grounded wheel. That being said, it at least has some sort of front differential device.
@@Dnh-Bear The G80 wouldn't be that great of an option in the front not because of the responsiveness, but because it might break your wrist and/or your inside CV axle when it locks up and you are full power half turned in. For all the racket they make, Detroits and Grizzlys at least have some give. G80s are a neat clock work, but the new Infinite variable hydraulic LSDs will end up being a more elegant option for that crowd. But those are all expensive, so most will still run a device that costs $800 or less. Lunchbox is also a good option for around $3-400. I do find it odd that they didn't put a front Torsen on the Ranger Tremor like they did with the Super Dutys. The Ranger is 100% dana, so it isn't for lack of an existing supplier.
I think it's the frame+suspension on that model, unless they changed it , ZR2 are all short beds with softer shocks in the rear? Could have some cooling issues on the v6? I have not had any cooling issues in 60k miles I own 17 GMC Canyon with the 2.8 diesel. 4 door, long bed(6ft), rated towing @ 7,700. I do not see to many crew cabs with long bed
I had a 2017 ZR2 and it was great to drive off-road and on road. Too bad it stayed in the shop so many times, hopefully by now Chevy has tweaked it to not break down so much bc it really is a fun truck to own and drive.
It's a great truck. But I think you are selling it a little short. It's a good rock crawling truck too. Add some metal guards for the rear shocks and no problem. The diesel is perfect for overland trails too. I live on Vancouver Island and we have thousands of KM on back logging roads. The diesel shines there. I've put around 5000km on a diesel Z71 Colorado . I really enjoyed driving it. I would have bought one if it could tow my trailer. Ended up with a trail boss instead.
The Vancouver Island logging roads I have been on, near Cowichan Lake, are incredibly pot-holed. Can you make use of the truck's high speed capabilities?
I love the zr2 but I always have to wonder if it would be better to get a side by side and a more traditional truck. Would I really push it like this offroad if it was my daily and I knew it was this expensive?
I can't imagine complaining about the reverse camera on my 2018, I've never had a rear camera before and I can put the ball under the trailer tongue first try every time.
I would love to see someone get their hands on a ZR2 with the long travel shocks and suspension, just to see what changes. GM oughta throw one together and send it out, the lack of ground clearance is the truck's achilles' heel and who knows, maybe they could move even more if more people knew they sold a long travel suspension kit for the truck.
Not sure if you are aware but boost auto and clearview both make a aftermarket tow mirror option for both Colorado and canyon and much better then any clip on mirror.
I like the previous years models of zr2.. Im a Ford guy but until they redesign the Ranger I gotta say I would pick a colorado any day. I wish ford would design it more squarish front end like a mini f150 in the front. I hate the way the front end looks on the Ranger. I had a rental GMC 2020 acadia for example and the front end looked like the gmc sierra which i thought looks really good. The ranger looks like the ugly 1999-2003ish gen f150s with the rounded front end. Thats my personal taste though.
I’ve had a Colorado and now a Tacoma. The Colorado is a better daily driver. The brakes alone make a huge difference in your driving experience and the Tacoma’s brakes are hideous! This is something a 15 minute test drive didn’t reveal to me. You get so much more in technology from the Colorado than the taco offers. The 4x4 system is one of those technologies. The electronic lockers are hands down the best thing about it’s 4x4 system. I’m not a huge fan of the Colorado refresh but will consider going back to one if they fix its transmission/torque converter issues.
@@shiftmotorsports9803 that’s good to hear! My 18 z71 had issues so I got rid of it thinking if it’s already having mechanical issues with under 5k miles I don’t want to be stuck with it for future issues. Went with the Tacoma because of all the good reliability reports however I’m not super impressed with it overall compared to the Colorado. It lacks in many areas for me.
@@pagodad2036 Can't blame you for ditching it if you're having problems. I would do the same. Thanks for following along! I decided to move on from TFL to run my own channel and work with my pops full-time. I didn't mention it in the video, but I couldn't stop seeing Lexus design in this grille either. The spindle grille was the original to go with the 'Predator' look, and Chevy added some of that to the new ZR2.

Looks really cool, but it would have been more cool if they made the interior a tad bit more premium, instead of just one color, could have added some more color too it, and more modern features like keyless start.
Wish there was a off road ripping setting lol. The rear suspensions on most trucks are too stiff and bounce too much. If was softened up a bit and squatted during landing instead of bouncing so much it would be easier to handle
I had a 18 rado z71. had transmission issues so I got rid of it for a taco. After driving the taco for 10 months, I miss the Colorado. Overall the Colorado is a better daily driver. The Colorado has a better 4x4 system with the E lockers and auto mode. I do think they screwed up on the Colorado refresh though. That front end looked better before.
I like your testing but I think you should tow at the max rated amount to compare apples to apples. i.e. if Ridgeline does 5000 then a 3000 lb tow is not a fair comparison to the ZR2 at 4000 when rated at 5000 as well. So either do at the rated weight or 20% less than the rated weight consistently. Yeah, scientific quality... LOL. Also, do the acceleration in all-wheel drive or it's equivalent - entering a highway equivalent. Despite all the whining, I think you do a great job of basic comparison for those of us shopping for something. Good opinion commantary.
Great high-speed capability, but not many places in Ontario where you can legally make use of that. Even the logging roads have too many curves and blind hills. Meet up with a logging truck, or a moose, at 60 km/hr on a blind curve and that will be the end of your ZedR2.

I love the zr2 but I always have to wonder if it would be better to get a side by side and a more traditional truck. Would I really push it like this offroad if it was my daily and I knew it was this expensive?
Questions you do have to answer for yourself for sure.
5.3 would of be a nice upgrade.
I wasn't. thanks, I'll check them out.
Truck King I have them on my canyon and it’s nice even when not towing wish GM had just offered them as a optional accessory.
I like the looks of the truck
I like the previous years models of zr2.. Im a Ford guy but until they redesign the Ranger I gotta say I would pick a colorado any day.
I wish ford would design it more squarish front end like a mini f150 in the front. I hate the way the front end looks on the Ranger.
I had a rental GMC 2020 acadia for example and the front end looked like the gmc sierra which i thought looks really good.
The ranger looks like the ugly 1999-2003ish gen f150s with the rounded front end. Thats my personal taste though.
Same here man, I'm a ford guy but I love the Colorado vs the ranger. The ZR2 is an amazing truck.
Ford should pay attention to how GMC designed their Canyons. Love how squarish that front is!
5:20 that looks old?! Damn where have I been livin
Such a fun truck to throw around! :)
It looks very cool
Like you, I am a petite fella... how do you like the interior room? I understand its not full size... but, I am intrigued by the ZR2.
It was big enough for us.
Who would think that 16th century Toyota brake setup is not up to date.🤔
I have had my ZR2 for 3 years and 50000 miles. No transmission issues or torque converter issues to speak of.
Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a perfectly optioned, perfectly reliable, long lasting truck out there. Everything breaks. At the risk of sounding old, they really don't make things like they used to!
One of my favorite trucks. Maybe do your 0-60 runs in Auto 4WD for vehicles so-equipped.
great content bro TFL is gonna miss you
Nice of you to say - they'll be fine and so will I
Maybe those shocks are tuned for rebound with spare wheels i n the back.
Honestly, keeping the internals the same is smart
I accidentally carried 2800 pounds of concrete climbing mountains with my Z71 and figured out the max payload later but turned out well, no issues.
No more TFL?I love your videos I will follow you where ever you go. Now to the truck why does it look like the front grill of a Lexus GX460?
Thanks for following along! I decided to move on from TFL to run my own channel and work with my pops full-time.
I didn't mention it in the video, but I couldn't stop seeing Lexus design in this grille either. The spindle grille was the original to go with the 'Predator' look, and Chevy added some of that to the new ZR2.
@@TruckKing Thanks for the response, Im happy you get to work with your Dad what a dream. and thank you for your review on the Lexus GX 460 it was what we wanted to see and hear, we picked up our 2021 last weekend white on black luxury and we love it! bring on the snow and rain ( we live in washington state lol we get a lot of rain and mud ) good luck with the new channel I look forward to seeing future content.
Agreed with what Pepito said !!
Looks really cool, but it would have been more cool if they made the interior a tad bit more premium, instead of just one color, could have added some more color too it, and more modern features like keyless start.
STILL A BEAST FOR A MIDSIZE👍👍👍👍😎
I am not sure what your affiliation is/ what with TFL but you guys are the best... I subscribed
No more TFL, just Truck King.
Keep up the good work!
Awesome video. What app are you using for the 0-100 times? If you don’t mind me asking.
drag racer
AMAZING !!!!!!!!!!!
Wish there was a off road ripping setting lol. The rear suspensions on most trucks are too stiff and bounce too much. If was softened up a bit and squatted during landing instead of bouncing so much it would be easier to handle
Love my Zed-R2 and would not go back to a Tacoma for anything!
That front end looked better before.
same, i have a 2019 zr2 diesel bison and it's better in every way
@@therottinzombie How’s your 🦬 diesel holding up for you n how many miles you got on it?
@@JG-mg3if no issues, 32,000
@@therottinzombie Good to hear..You running everything stock, if you don’t mind me asking.
Well done!
That little truck has a front locker?
I like your testing but I think you should tow at the max rated amount to compare apples to apples. i.e. if Ridgeline does 5000 then a 3000 lb tow is not a fair comparison to the ZR2 at 4000 when rated at 5000 as well. So either do at the rated weight or 20% less than the rated weight consistently. Yeah, scientific quality... LOL. Also, do the acceleration in all-wheel drive or it's equivalent - entering a highway equivalent. Despite all the whining, I think you do a great job of basic comparison for those of us shopping for something. Good opinion commantary.
When you guys review the Jeep gladiator Mojave can you please compare them? I’m trying to decide which one I want
Since 4WD you have to make some passes in, well, 4WD.
Great high-speed capability, but not many places in Ontario where you can legally make use of that. Even the logging roads have too many curves and blind hills. Meet up with a logging truck, or a moose, at 60 km/hr on a blind curve and that will be the end of your ZedR2.
I just got one and love it.
Needs the 4.3 L V-6 motor.
This 3.6 has more horses.
5.3 Would be perfect
@@mikemissouri5152 I agree. I have a 3.6 in a 2015 Cadillac ats premium with performance pkg. It's rated at 321hp, no slouch for what it is. Wish it had a 5.3!!! Lol. The 3.6s run well though
Those 4.3's, were terrible on fuel
