    Very informative review, just a few pointers, not wanting to be picky, just thought it might be interesting:
    6:25 No, it's an electric supply on a class 87. They never had boilers for steam heating supplied. IRL it's VERY important to turn it off if you are detaching the locomotive from the train, or splitting the train, as it would otherwise cause a very dangerous arc when pulling out the cable.
    7:09 The anti slip brake is not used to hold the train on an incline. It's function is to apply a small amount of brake force on the locomotive only to prevent the traction motors from "running away" during slippery conditions. It's actually pretty useful in real life, especially in combination with sand when it's really slippery, for example during leaf fall season.
    11:20 Reohstatic, not regenerative. On a class 87, and many other older locomotives, the current created by the traction motors working "backwards" is burnt of as heat in resistors, often located on the roof of the unit. That's also why the cooling fans rev up during braking.
    14:52 You would not normally overcharge the main pipe after having it empty, mostly due to the main reservoir on the locomotive possibly running out of air if the train is more than about 10 coaches long. If it does, it can affect the main breaker (depending on locomotive class) as it often has a safety function which trips it if the pressure gets too low. One of the reasons for this is that the pantograph is held up by air pressure, and if it were to drop with the main breaker open it could cause an arc which in the worst case could damage the overhead line. Generally you should be restrictive with overcharging the main pipe, as it could cause the brakes to apply at the normal 5 bars if you overcharge too much. Then you would have to go outside and pull the release handle on each coach. IRL I usually just use a quick overcharge on a train with 8 coaches or more, and only after a heavy brake application.

      @@bjornlillpers498 thanks for the amazing information from someone who in guessing drove these machines in real life? One of the things I love about doing this is learning nuggets of information like this. My practice of over charging comes from the steam railway I operate on on the brake handle we use it's called charge and release we hold it there for 1 second for every four cars we've got. This is important on our railway because we're running down a 1 in 30 gradient and you must be able to apply again very soon after releasing. Yes indeed we have hi be careful to not overcharge and yes if you do you need to secure the train then walk the length manually releasing at each carriage. Glad to meet someone who knows how air brakes function. I try to keep it simple for the players.

    Am loving the class 87 and the new route - just a quantum leap. One thing however - the first few times I drove it, the tap changing & braking sounds were properly, dramatically loud, but now - barely audible. I've adjusted the ambient sounds etc relative to master volume, and it's a bit better, but nothing like the original set up. Anyone else experienced this?

    • @trainsimulatordriver
      @trainsimulatordriver  15 днів тому +1

      @@421mog it depends which end you're driving from. It's deliberately louder at one end because that's where the equipment is situated. If you're at the end she the pantograph it's louder than the end without it. You can always open your window to hear more of the sound.

    Having a problem with clearing the fault light. How does one do this please?

    • @trainsimulatordriver
      @trainsimulatordriver  18 днів тому +1

      I have never had the fault light come on! The only things I can think of is the main circuit breaker has blown (MCB). Try to o press "Panto Up/Reset" which will reset the Main Circuit Breaker. If that does not work, then "reboot" it by pressing "Panto Down", wait for the Panto to fall then press "Panto Up/Reset" and see if that helps you.

    I had been asking Just Trains, and others on the forum if Raildriver would function with the Class 87 for over a month. Are you saying it will not work, or is there a work around?

    • @trainsimulatordriver
      @trainsimulatordriver  23 дні тому +1

      @@Robert.S459 it works mostly well, the only real challenge is the ergonomics of it, when you put it into run up it just pops out again so you've got to keep jiggling the throttle handle to get it back into run up. I spoke to JT about it and they're planning a better setup that will release with a future patch. The 101 on the other hand will only go backwards regardless of lever position if you have RailDriver plugged in. Neither of them has had anything beyond default setup yet so it's just luck they mostly work.

    Maybe the 87 works like the 158 where you have to be in neutral to stop Vigilance from driving you mad.

      That is possible, or the throttle in off - I have not experimented - on our loco it only stops if the brakes are applied or cut out
