    just so we don't fall into toxic self comparison, everyone should keep in mind that she is a fictional character and, as you said, there is probably several people involved into making her "read" all these books. Besides, taking into acount that she is living within a very high academic environment, I think it is pretty logical that she reads that much classics, internet content was not a thing yet, and if there is so many books it is also because the show follows her through her young and adult life. So, too everyone who feel like they red nothing comparing to her, just keep in mind: it is not realistic !! ;)

    • @leopardtree2249
      @leopardtree2249 Рік тому +39

      Also we seen her have barley any friends til lane is introduced so tbh maybe she did that growing up but high school she stops and reads a couple of books. Her mother can be neglecting at times so rori probably read those books to take her mind off things. Also personal experience is that you can probably finish reading a book everyday. It sounds crazy but books that are 300 pages can be read in one day if you do nun but read it. I read one over the span of like 1 month then finally read it though and it took me 3 days after one month of reading til like chapter 5

      yeah she read like 50 books a year, while graduating as valedictorian from an elite private high school and then going off to yale. That's way beyond simple bookworm territory. It's about as realistic as the apartments in Friends or HIMYM.

      Exactly! Not only books, even movies and tv shows talked about in the show. “The yearling” was not a book she read, it’s a movie that Taylor picks for the town to watch every year. “Tuesdays with Morrie” and “Who moved my cheese” are books that Lorelai told Rory not to read and yet they are included. Bambi and Rapunzel were talked about as shows not books.

    One of the most known ones are Jean-Paul Sartre! Outside of philosophy, he was also a playwrite. He wrote No Exit, The Flies, and The Devil and the Good Lord (all that came to mind)
    There's also The Stranger by Albert Camus that grapples the concept of absurdity.
    Thus Spoke Zarathustra by Friedrich Nietzsche is ideas of good and evil, and a lot of Kafka has a lot of philosophical undertones.
    Philosophy-Fiction is actually such an interesting genre, I hope you're able to look into more! There's a lot of existentialism in the genre, and I actually read a lot of them during my existentialism courses!

    So, I devoted my senior year of high school in 2008 to binging all of Gilmore Girls, which did inspire me to pick up a few of the classics 😂. But when going through the list, I gave myself a little leeway because I've read portions of a lot of books/collections in a lot of my lit classes that I remember, and there are a couple where I can't remember if I only read the kid's abridged versions or if I picked up the real copy. But in total, I checked off 83 books (or 24% of the list). I definitely want to read more of these, but I also know there's at least 100 that I have no interest in or have already DNF'd, lol.
    And I agree, it's a little surprising which classics made it on the list, and which didn't! Especially by the same authors. Like, I feel like it's a safe assumption that had she liked some of them, she would have read more, but these are jus the ones that get referenced.

    The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test is an excellent book that I'd recommend if you think that you might like a story about the '60s counterculture movement in America. Two other excellent books that are loosely connected with The Acid Test are Hunter S. Thompson's Hell's Angels and Ken Kesey's The One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. But I totally understand that you already have a lot on your TBR list and none of these books are really in the vein of the dark academia vibe that you seem to be enjoying at the moment. Love all your videos, cheers.

    • @michaelsommers2356

      If I remember correctly, Kesey was a character in _The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test._ Kerouac's _On the Road_ is also connected to those books, since Neal Cassady (Dean Moriarty in Kerouac's book) also appears in Wolfe's book, and was a friend of Kesey's.

    • @StephenLarrick
      @StephenLarrick Рік тому

      @@michaelsommers2356 Kesey is a character, but I wouldn't call him a character -- if that makes sense. The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test was part of the New Journalism movement so it was very much a non-fictional account of events that didn't include invented "characters." And yes, I'd include Kerouac's On the Road in that circle of books, but On the Road was a chore for me to get through, and really wouldn't recommend it to others. The other three though I really enjoyed reading.

    • @StephenLarrick
      @StephenLarrick Рік тому

      @@michaelsommers2356 Of course I would, Kesey is the connecting thread between The Acid Test and Hell's Angles. My point was only that Kesey isn't a "character" in the literary sense of the word. The Acid Test is a work of journalism and is a non-fiction account of events. Thompson's Hell's Angles is also a work of journalism and probably only equaled by The Acid Test as a foundational text for a new style of reporting that continues to percolate to this day.

    • @michaelsommers2356

    I loved Gilmore girls. Even though I had a lot in common with Rory (bookish, nerdy, shy...) I always prefere Lorelai as a character. But I dont recommend Netflix special episodes. They destroyed show for me 😔

    Oh, Leo, I’m so happy you are enjoying Gilmore Girls! It’s definitely my favorite show ever. I’ve watched it 7 times, and it’s literally the only tv show with the power to make me feel happy whenever I’m down.
    It’s perfect exactly because it’s not.
    Once you finish it, can you make a review video? 🥺
    oh btw, my score was 13 LMAO
    In Brazil most of those books are not “obligatory”, and Rory didn’t read the Brazilian classics, so well…
    In my defense, I do want to read at least 50 of the books on the list, most of them are on my wishlist/tbr 🥹

I think you'd really like Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke. It's very short and full of quotes that get you thinking!

    First, because you mentioned the Yellow Wallpaper, I wanted to note Charlotte Wessels (Dutch singer, but English language song) recently released an amazing song called The Phantom Touch about that story. And now some fun insight about two titles you flagged in the video. The Manticore is book 2 in the Deptford trilogy and the most technical one to read in the trilogy IMO, though personally I think each book in the trilogy can be read as standalone books. Fifth Business is the first book in the trilogy (and if you pick one book in the trilogy, I’d pick this one) and the whole trilogy is full of magicians, mysteries and a really cool depiction of Jungian psychology and analysis (the trilogy is among my fav books, a modernish (1970s) Canadian classic). The Master and Margarita is another fav of mine and I’d describe it as a Russian gothic comedy, which includes fun things like characters who are writers, the devil causing mayhem on earth and a giant talking cat named Behemoth. Would be cool if you read these books, would love to hear your perspective on them.

    Ah, Gilmore Girls! I used to watch it on tv as a child and in my teens and I loved it, but it also made me feel anxious at times because parts of the Gilmore family dynamic mirrored the dynamics within my own extended family haha. I do think it truly is a comfort show overall, though. Happy watching! I'd love to see more Gilmore Girls related videos from you as well. A lot of the books on Rory's list sound intriguing, and this video made me consider setting the list as a reading challenge for myself in a very relaxed manner - no time limit, and so on. Also, 6:43 exactly!? I'd be really interested to hear the thought process behind choosing these particular books for Rory. Part of it is probably required readings at North American schools etc. but I'm curious about how these books may have been chose based on, for example, Rory's personality and interests (such as the books on feminism). + 21:46 aw, that fairy tale was one of my favourites as a child! I read a Finnish translation with lovely illustrations.

    I got 37 of 339 but most were required reading for school. Like you, I prefer a little more fantasy and non-classics although there are some I own but haven't read yet. It's interesting to go thru the list but I still prefer to read based on my mood.

    Gilmore Girls will always be a cozy, comfort show for me. So many great episodes and dialogues. That being said, I didn't get the impression that Rory was a feminist to be honest. I don't think it was something that she had much awareness of during the show. While it's true she was raised to be a strong, independent woman like her own mother, the way she regarded females in general were through very narrow lens. The expectations and ideals she held for herself, she projected onto others and if they didn't share those same thoughts, they were belittled. Definitely something I missed when I was younger but rewatches as an adult has unfortunately made that abundantly clear. BUT, I often overlook it simply for the small town cozy vibes lol 🍂I didn't write my life philosophies based on the show. Also, totally concur with what @skelousnais said! Well said and very true.

    Haha like you, I just discovered the cozy comfort of Gilmore Girls and it came out when I was just a little younger than Rory was…it’s so nostalgic! I never watched back then because I was more into books and worked a lot when not at school …I’m surprised I have read so many of the same books as Rory, however! Many of which were contemporary fiction of that time, so you’re on to something with that theory! This was fun! 😁

    I think the list includes the movie titles/books she had to read for school/books mentioned or read by others, but keeping in mind this is over the span of 6/7 years in Rory's life and she was a journalist major it makes sense for her to have read so many and diverse books. I'm also in the middle of re watching Gilmore Girls :D
