the sense of superiority i get when i’ve read a book jack hasnt despite the fact i have read about 15 books on the whole list is so stupid
I only read ONE. And I felt good that he hadn't read it
I was literally just thinking the same. When he said he hadn't read The Outsiders by SE Hinton I was like "HA I have!" haha.
literally me with flowers for algernon
@@gianaclarke8583 ahhhh that’s the one i was thinking about too!
@@gianaclarke8583 I cannot believe he hasn't read that one.
Going through all the books that Jess Mariano reads in Gilmore Girls could be a slightly less monumental task!
omg yes jack should do this
Please do this!! He's the best character
Yes! I am also a team Jess fan
YES and i would love that more!!
hahaha so true
The Rory Gilmore reading challenge isn't accurate though, because it's listing everything the whole show referenced that is a book or loosely related to a book. Like Rory never read the Gnostic Gospels! I wish someone would make a list of books you actively see Rory reading in the show.
yeah exactly. i'm on season 6 of a rewatch and some of these are inaccurate
Challenge Accepted, time for a new list!!
yeah like tuesdays with morrie is specifically mentioned because lorelei tells rory she doesn’t have to read it lol
or bambi is mentioned obviously referring to the disney movie
I'm convinced Rory can not even read.
rory gilmore reading more books than jack is his villain origin story
rory didn't read most of them, i know jess read a few of them. these are just books referenced i believe
I'm early and Jack, I'm not a Hozier fan but please make a "reading Hozier's book recs" for that one person who comments for this everytime 😭
Yes i remember seeing that person's comment in previous videos.
I don’t think we will. 😩 he recommended another channel.
He already replied to a similar comment in his last video. He said that uncarley already did it and he's not gonna do it (paraphrasing)
yes I feel so bad for that person 😭💔
Omg same, i stopped seeing that guy's comment, so i started commenting it too just like this, man i love how sweet this community is
Nothing to do with Jack of course, but this list is nutty. As an avid Gilmore Girls fans, I can attest that it is very inaccurate if it's supposed to be a list of the books we see Rory reading or are told that she has read. A lot of the books on here are actually referenced by other characters (many in scenes that did not include Rory at all) and a lot of the references to these books were explicitly about the film adaptations, not the books. Also a lot of the books she reads and has full conversations about are not even on the list somehow. Just a heads up for anyone who'd like to attempt a Rory Gilmore reading challenge - I'd search for a more accurate list.
I have noticed this and wondered about that. Who originally made this list? It's been floating around for years now. Was it possible just a general Gilmore Girls show list and then over time (and through many games of internet telephone) was retitled as a Rory list?
This exactly. I know that when they talked about The Yearling it was the only movie they could get for a film showing and Jess was the one who had read Please Kill Me.
Yesss sooo many movies. Babe? The godfather? Sophie's choice? Charlie and the chocolate factory? All mentioned as movies.
THANK YOU! Finally someone said it! I see people mention this list all the time and am always like "NOOOOOO"
I know!! For The Children's Hour they watched the movie and then Lorelai read it, not Rory
A literature degree graduate, friendly human, has the absolute best book taste, possesses a great sense of humor, and the best UA-camr to exist. What more could we ask for?
YESS!!!
AND HE IS ALSO A FEMINIST
Like he is the perfect guy
Hes now in france
Also, a Tay Tay stan since we are listing his good qualities
I started binging gilmore girls recently and i just finished the show literally 15 minutes ago and wanted to read rorys books so this couldnt have come at a more perfect time
im following it for school and so far it’s rlly good :))
I’ve seen it so many times (well seasons 1-3) , I love how as he went through I remembered the references to it in the show or Rory actually reading it. Like room of ones own in that dress at her grandparents, and Ulysses in the step on a Chilton. Rory didn’t actually read all of them- in fact in season 1 I think we only see her reading 8 books,
:O thats so cool!!!! /g
Me too! I just finished watching A Year in The Life yesterday!
Me too! I was watching earlier today ( for the first time)
being obsessed with gilmore girls and jack edwards is basically my main two priorities in life

@@me-ph5to I know I got lazy lmao 😭
You can easily get a PDF online!
I only read 7 of them
And a lot of the classics are free on ibooks already which is great :)
I feel like Rory’s reading level vs her maturity level is very unbalanced. Funny how she can understand and appreciate these great works but is shocked to find out stealing a boat with loose-cannon boyfriend isn’t a good move…
I highly recommend Christine by Stephen King! Not only a great book but also great for spooky season! 👻📖🎃🚘
well there are different kinds of intelligence
@@EL-ksvkv totally agree
I mean, do we really know that she fully understood them??
If you haven't read The Shining, you will love it if you liked Christine!
sometimes i felt they wanted to create a bookish character without the actual consequences of it: someone who has been influenced by the thing they've read and actually uses that in real life
Just as Jess Mariano had said, "Ernest only has lovely things to say about you" Jack.
one of my fave quotes of rory and jess’
YES‼️
I've never seen Gilmore girls but I recognize the ref 🤯 too many layers going on here lol
Sylvia what are you doing here😮?? how I got it so fast
You saying “it turns out I’m illiterate” while on “flowers for Algernon” is absolutely horrifying and you’ll understand why when you read it.
Oh no 😂 didn’t notice that
Why?
@@nursemain3174 I mean explaining that would give away the entire plot lol. Just read it, it’s devastating.
The irony ✨
I don't think that list is correct. I think they put books that were referenced in Gilmore Girls but not all of them were read by Rory and also I think some of those weren't even references to the books but the movies. Also the diary of a wimpy kid book wasn't even out back then. So I think you actually did amazing!
Thank you for pointing that out! I was briefly losing my mind cuz I was positive the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series was published after the show's original run. 😅
just thought that too! like in no world would rory have read diary of a wimpy kid, it wasn't even out then😂
“Snow White and Rose Red” is actually a completely different story from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves”. It’s still a folks tale though, I believe. I had it on tape as a kid:)
It is, both are part of Grimm's fairytales! 😊
It was my fave one growing up
It’s interesting that one can confuse these two tales because of their names in English. In German that wouldn’t even be be possible. ”Snow White and the Seven Dwarves“ is „Schneewittchen und die sieben Zwerge“ and “Snow White and Rose Red“ is „Schneeweißchen und Rosenrot“. So there is Schneewittchen and Schneeweißchen.
@@feeline1120 It makes sense, though, since "wittchen" derives from "wittken" which is low german for white!
@@luftpolsterfolie Yes, I’m from East Frisia and here we say Witt for White. Sagt man das anders bei euch?
I tried to do this but it was depressing, haha. Later I thought that Rory hasn't read any of the Mexican and Latinamerican (?) books I've read (or even European, when you think about it) and felt better. Sort of.
She did read Eva Luna and 100 years of solitude (edit): I didn’t realize you said books you’ve read thought you just meant she hadn’t read latinoamerican books hehe
I mean you also have to remind yourself thar rory does not exist
@@deevyadeo971 yeah, that too 😅
THE OUTSIDERS!! Such a good book that’s really short but extremely impactful with its social commentary
Stay Gold, Ponyboy.
I was so shook when he said he had never read it
I went through a whole S.E. Hinton binge in middle school because of The Outsiders
omg my alltime favorite book 😭😭😭 its kinda sad that only a few people know about this masterpiece
It was so good. Made me cry. Love that someone else has read it too!
Oh gods our librarian is back again. I was bout to leave thinking the library is closed
He's not a librarian.
@@emiliaburgos5404 I don't know what that means, I'm afraid.
@@phoebewashington2709 lol of course he isn't but he calls himself "UA-cam's resident librarian"

dndjkdoosksoqkeor lolll
4:42 "brigadoon..? i've read bridgerton.." LMAO JACK 😭
I’ve watched Gilmore Girls way too many times when Jack says “Social origins of dictatorship and democracy” and my immediate reaction is “I hear Renee Zellweger is gaining a tonne of weight to play the peasant”.
finally someone else with this afflictiob
I can definitely hear some of the scenes as he is reading the titles.
The way he pronounced Anna Karenina made me sob internally 😭😭
Which IS the correct way, actually. Most people pronounce it incorrectly.
I just don’t think this is an accurate list of what Rory’s read haha, a lot of it is stuff that Lorelei references in a throwaway line or they’re actually talking about the movie adaptation or something. or all the travel books, people don’t read those straight through
thank you for doing this, this show has been my comfort show for as long as I can remember, and I've probably watched it upwards of 20 times, so this was very interesting to see your comparisons to her readings :D
I love seeing a long Jack Edwards video. It just warms my heart!
In the United States, at least, this week is Banned Books Week! I'm a librarian, and libraries all over the country are setting up displays of challenged and banned books - there are several lists available for the most challenged books. "I am Jazz" is one of the most recently published that is often challenged, for example. I'd love to see you bring these books to attention!
That’s such a good idea, like a video of him reading the most banned books and what he thought of them
There's a manga series called "Bungo stray dogs" in which every character is inspired in a famous author (mostly japanese) and I think it could be interesting to have a video of you reading some of the books that are referenced :D
Love your videos, btw, they're so original. I was waiting for a Gilmore girls related one.
Heyo where can I watch it?
omg yes that'd be great!
@@adwita224 On Crunchyroll ;))
omgggg yes
Well, i started reading books bcz of bungou stray dogs though :D..the 1st ever book i read was no longer human by osamu dazai..and it was mind blowing...each and every writer mentioned in bungou stray dogs is dope🔥🔥🔥
i’m so incredibly happy i came across your channel. watching your videos have been one of the things keeping me happy. thank you jack 💕

Isn’t it fascinating how different our list of books we’ve read so far can be so different? I just did this the challenge quiz and only read 61 out 339.
That’s so impressive! Which is your favorite on the list?

i've been ✨ manifesting✨this video for a good three months!! 🥺😭
Jack I just wanted to drop in and tell you just how much you’ve influenced my reading taste over the past couple of months. In early 2020, I found myself drifting away from my long-time interest in YA dystopia/fantasy. I’d read countless series including HP, Divergent, the hunger games, the maze runner, etc, along with stand alone books in the series, prequels whatnot. But I simply couldn’t bring myself to read something else from that genre anymore, which was very frustrating. And then I found you! You helped me discover a brand new genre and allowed me to fall in love with so many books. Just this month, because of your recommendations, I bought convenience store woman and before the coffee gets cold. Honestly, I’m hooked now! My copies of tales from the cafe and Hamnet just arrived, and I’m looking forward to getting more books that you’ve recommended! You helped me get out of my reading slump and I love you for that, thank you soooo much! All the love!
Ah yes my obsession for YA contemporary seemed immortal but apparently it damn well wasn't and I'm thankful. Like...if I really am in the need of some YA shit, I watch kdramas. It's a good genre for beginners though, easy to understand and chilled out sort of enjoyable. Anyways, fr my taste changed sm
@@adwita224 exactly! Even in mid 2019, I was so pumped when the hunger games’s prequel was announced, I bought it the day after It came out the following year, in 2020 (on a kindle tho, don’t judge) just to salvage my interest a little bit, but honestly, I still haven’t finished it. I just couldn’t bring myself to do it, so much changed in a year lol. I’ve read and bought countless books since then but that one has stayed half-read for a year and a half and I don’t think that’s gonna change anytime soon. But it did help bridge the gap between my tastes now and my “diary of a wimpy kid/other popular elementary/middle school books” phase, which was really just a handful of authors like Jeff Kinney, Jaqueline Wilson, Rachel Renee Russel, Carolyne Keen, you get the idea.
as a fellow used-to-read-only-YA-and-then-grew-up-apparently person, who also discovered japanese literature through jack, i must insist that you read the housekeeper and the professor -i hate math with a passion and SOMEHOW this book is so endearing it very quickly made its way into my all time favorites list!!
@@AtomicKittenBaby I’ll note that down! I just ordered like 6 books so it may take a while, thank you so much for your recommendations! I appreciate them :)
Similar with me
Okay I commented this to your last video, and I'm soo happy you finally made a video on this! ahhhh!!
Was so waiting for this video!
feel like this book list REALLY shows its age with the al franken, the bushism and the michael moore haha. But for real, there's a lot of good ones on here that I think you would enjoy! Maybe instead of reading all of them you can do like a selection from the list and call it good? I would love to see you read some isabel allende, amy tan, or some of the russian powerhouses on this list.
The Master and Margarita is such an amazing book! I read it this year and was blown away. So wacky and a lot of fun!
Best piece of Russian literature in my humble opinion! It's one of my ever favourite books and I recommend it to everyone who will hear it haha
Finally! I waited so long for this!!!
I have been waiting for this for so long.
I’m trying to do it by season, it would take me literally forever to do, but some are only loosely referenced. Atm I’m doing season 1 which conveniently works with my English lit alevel suggested reading list. Which is why I’m starting off with The Bell Jar- which I’m like 100 pages from finishing (might be a potential for my coursework). On the whole list I think I’ve read like 20 maybe- and 7 of them are the HP books and i also read like a lot of the Nancy drew books when I was younger but can’t remember exactly which ones. And then just like most of the children’s stories I read or like the Ones we did at school.
I read the bell jar a few weeks ago I really enjoyed it
Is there a list on the internet where the books are sorted by season? Or, haved you watches it and then sorted it yourself?
@@helyanwe1779 the blogs whatshotbooks and blackwhitereadbooks have the lists by season and with context. Hope that helps.

OH MY GOSH i've been waiting for thissss thank you, book god.
the fact that Jack has read the Bhagwat Gita, while no one in my Hindu- Indian family has, it's a bit concerning.
It's just sooooo looooooong
@@booklovershourya1046 bro who even reads bhagwat gita except for grannies and extremely religious people?
@@vedicamahendian5690 um no actually. I'm not really religious, and yeah the deep rigid mythology sort of bores me too BUT the Bhagavad Gita is one of those epics which NEED to be read. I've not read it myself but all the people who have(mostly non religious) recommend it strongly. And the excerpts that I've sometimes come across are actually quite calming and meaningful. I guess you could pick up Devdutt Pattnaik's books cuz it's mythology but still very accessible :)
@@vedicamahendian5690 and it's actually in my TBR hehe
@@adwita224 I get the point you are trying to make. the problem is accessibility. most people can not understand the level of Hindi or the translated language it is written in. as for English, I tried reading it in English and that made the epic lose its magic. What I meant to say was that its kind of harder for the younger generation to pick up on it, I mean I love hearing about it from my grandma but actually reading it is a lot harder. I know I am missing out big time but just can't bring myself to read it. thank you so much for the recommendation though :)
Oryx and Crake is so good! It's that speculative foreign dystopia genre that I love but don't have a name for.
