I have taken eight of the most popular 200 tw (tread wear) extreme performance tires, to find out exactly which tire is the fastest, which has the best heat management, which tire has the best wear on track, and most importantly, which tire is nicest to drive.
All the tested tires are 225/45 R17 and we are testing at Michelins dry handling track in south carolina, which is a high speed, high grip, high wear track.
The test vehicle is an awesome E36 BMW M3 Lightweight, which has a roll cage, harness, bucket seat etc, a truly fun track car.
The eight tires on test are:
BFGoodrich Rival S 1.5 - www.tire-reviews.com/Tyre/BFG...
Cooper RS3 RS - www.tire-reviews.com/Tyre/Coo...
Dunlop Direzza ZIII - www.tire-reviews.com/Tyre/Dun...
Falken Azenis RT660 - www.tire-reviews.com/Tyre/Fal...
Hankook Ventus RS4 - www.tire-reviews.com/Tyre/Han...
Kumho Ecsta V730 - www.tire-reviews.com/Tyre/Kum...
Maxxis Victra VR1 - www.tire-reviews.com/Tyre/Max...
Yokohama Advan A052 - www.tire-reviews.com/Tyre/Yok...
There is no Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 as they don't make a 200TW tire, no Bridgestone Potenza RE71R as it has been discontinued in North America with no replacement due, no Toyo products due to the R888R being 100tw and the R1R a very old tire now, no Continental or Nexen due to stock, and there's probably some other tires I've missed so feel free to tell me in the comments :)
Any questions please ask below and don't forget to review your own tires at Tyre Reviews.

You missed the best Tire... Nankang AR1
@@trackfocussed9810 100tw!
@@tyrereviews nankang cr1 then :) it's a 200tw tyre
Adding PS4S and Conti SC6 reviews.
In 245/30R20 no less 😁
@@Wydarr PS4S is 300tw, and SC6 I think is 280. Great tires, but not 200tw
We need EU version, with threadwear something like 120 and up, Nankang NS-2R and AR-1, Federal 595 RR, RSR and PRO and something in that category!
There will be one in the future :)
@@tyrereviews Boy, oh, boy... being in Europe I'm SO waiting for those tyres.
Oh, and if you do this test, could you incorporate something about heat cycles and tyre life?
Pleeeeeeaaaaaaase?
@@tyrereviews can't wait! Please also include a Cup2 or PS4S as a comparison, I'd really like to know how those cheap semislicks compare
Agreed. We need a U.K. track day tyre review. Maybe using something front wheel drive as well like the clio or the EP3 civic type R
Nah you got about 10% of the world racing on those tw. About 80% are racing on this setup right here tested
Not that im an expert.. but been working for many yrs with tires..
Im amazed by the work you do.. and that u take so much pride in making the tests as correct as it can be.. i can not tell you how much i respect ur results and work..
Thank you for really enjoyment and informational video..
Thank you for the kind words :)
You've got some weird data there Tyre Reviews.
For me at my local track I use whatever can put down the power or comes in the right sizes.
Bridgestone Rs3: 1:48.09
Bridgestone Re71: 1:48.01
Yokohama ad08r: 1:47.98
Hancook RS4: 1:47.45
Khumo V70: 1:47:44
Nankang AR1: 1:47.41
Michelin Cup2: 1:47.39
Toyo R888r: 1:47.13
Toyo R888: 1:46.39
Nitto Nt01: 1:46.88
Bridgestone RE71RS: 1:43.86
Hancook Z221: 1:43.02
Yokohama a050: 1:42.71
Yokohama a052: 1:42.58
Each of these tires lasted me several track days and did 100's of laps each. The re71Rs, and z221 barely made it through a second track day until grip dropped off at the end of the day, the rest kept going for 4-5 track days as well as street driving in between.
A052 is my fastest tire even against Z221 and Re71RS
I have data for each, timestamps and obviously which tire i was on.
This is very similar to my experience as well.
@@billysmith4278 I've since gotten in a time with Nankang AR1 at around 1:44* and slightly improved my time with re71RS
These reviews just keep getting better
Just kicking ass left and right.
No one does this kind of review, anywhere.
I don't even know what to ask for more. lol
Again, thank you for the great review.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful shots of that old hero of a car fighting for grip !
A BMW from an era when body roll still was a thing, and grilles were normal. ❤
:D The car flexes so much you have to keep your hands away from the cage if a passenger lol. PS I used to have an E24, sweet ride!
@@tyrereviews Ah nice, not sure if I'd let you drive mine though 😊
You tend to give them a proper beating 😂
@@tyrereviews SOME flex in a race or rally car body can be useful.
I have seen RWD rally cars where the front of the cage was welded to rhe A-posts but the rear was bolted(!) to the C-posts. On dry tarmac those bolts were fixed for max grip all the time. On wet or dirt roads the bolts were removed to allow the body to flex a bit. This gave a bit smoother transition between grip and slip
I’ve been watching your videos to help me pick out tires for my E24, so cool to see you’ve had one too! Went with the Direzza Z3s last year, still need to get out on track before having a really good opinion. But for the spirited backroad driving I’ve done so far, really great tire. Interested in those BFGs and Falkens now...
Finally!!! Glad you were able to get a hold of all these for a test
Super helpful test. It's interesting to see how the 200tw category has evolved. I've spent a lot of time running enduros with this tire category, but that was years ago. What a glorious m3!!!
The time, money, energy, and effort to do a video as detailed like this can't be taken lightly. Thanks! You've got yourself a subscriber.
Great test! You’re so thorough with data and getting everything right!
Yes!!! Needed this 💪
Love the monumental effort you put into preserving accurate and reliable results.
I appreciate all the work that goes into these testings! All of them! Gratitude to the fullest!
Thank you! 😁
This was exactly what I was looking for! Great reviews as always!
Great test, fun to watch
Amazing review, incredible the amount of research, testing and calculation you put into these tests. Thanks for doing these and keep up the good work! I think my next set of tires is definitely going to have to be the Falkens since they are priced so well.
They were mega! Lmk how you find them
Great review 👍 . Thank you for taking extra time to calculate for different track temperatures . Very impresive breakdown and right on point .
Thank you very much!
It's always a happy day when I see Jon doing some new tire review video and yes, that exhaust does sound good.
:D
Thanks Jonathon for your reviews. I base my tyre purchases 100% on your reviews.
Keep up the great work. I wish you all the success.
Thank you for the kind words!
You made it with the Yokohamas! Thank you very much!
Looking forward with the road focused UHPs. Cheers!
Finally! Been waiting for 200 track tire test! Thank you
I hope you enjoyed!
This is the best video on the internet. Thank you!
Awesome review. I've been running star specs on my e36 m3 since the z1. May have to give those Yokohamas a try.
Again. A winner video and test . 🤩
Great review!!!
Thank you for this video!
I used the Hankook Rs4 s since they came out to the market i knew they were slower compared to top tires but from what i can say they hold up so well throughout the heat cycles i was hoping to see it in the extra 8 lap session, but amazing work! Thank you so much for providing this review and data along with it.
Fantasitc job Johnatan - you make the most comprehensive and accurate tests in the business.
Thank you sir :)
Thanks so much for this! I do lots of Autocross events(200tw being the fastest tire allowed in Street classes), and quite a few track days, so this is super useful. Top job on this.
My pleasure :) Spread the word!
@@tyrereviews Just sent the video link to a couple trackday/Autocross friends. Im sure it will make the rounds on the forums/reddit as well. Good data for discussion.
very detailed review! thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent information. My new go to for tire advice. Thanks very much.
Thanks very much fot what you do. You give a lot of information to us that are so valuable.
Thanks
Love the content it's always informative!
thank you!
Really appreciate all of these reviews
Thanks dude, I appreciate the comment!
thanks for this video. 200 is the best kind of tires for the enthusiast and it's good to see the comparison
Awesome vid, am rocking direzza z3 at the moment but know where to go next. Thanks for the hard work! Totally subscribed now
Love your work 👍
love it. very useful videos, my car might not be ready for tires like this but I love the test anyway
Glad you enjoyed it!
Strong showing from the Hankook, I can confirm they wear like iron and are super consistent throughout a track session. They're surprisingly good in the wet too for a 200TW tyre
Love the car! I took your advise and put 225/45R17 Goodyear Asymmetric 5 on my E36 325i convertible and it feels amazing! Keep it coming. From Malaysia
I choose these based on this guys recommendation as well haha
You are a hero man keep this good work please.thanks!!
Thanks!
Finally the track tyre review, very good review here
Thank you!
Thank you well done. Your findings also coincide what we have been seeing during autocrossing.
Awesome, I love it when data matches 😁
I absolutely love to see this 👍
The only tyre tester I trust. Great video!
Need a UK or EU version of this video!
There 100% will be soon :)
How many of these are sold in Uk/EU? The only one I've seen for my measure (ass 15 inch) in EU is the A052
@@tyrereviews Nice, because most of these we cannot find here. Would be perfect to have an EU version
Thank you for this ✌️✌️
Well done!
Okay my man you just leveled way the heck up! Time for a big boy shirt now.
Love your videos! I think it would be interesting to test fuel economy tires for handling, braking, and fuel economy.
FINALLY A YOKOHAMA TYRE!
Would be keen to see the street/track AD08R in a test. LOVE the testing detail!!
Good job, you hit the nail on the head. I've driven all these ties and my top 3 are the Rival then RS4 and last the Falken. If you want to be fast and are a good driver, the Rival for sure. If you have mild experience the RS4 is the best tire because it telegraphs everything, easy to manage, good progressivity, good recovery pass Mu. The Falken just does everything okay, is like an all season track tire, okay in dry, wet, life time, drop off, and communicate pretty well. Also is okay with abusive drivers. [PS]: next time you're in my hometown, stop by the BMW Performance Center and say hello!
The Falken was the surprise of the test for me, especially given the price point, fast and consistent. Next time I'll try and include wet.
I appreciate your extreme thoroughness and expertise. But even more than that, I appreciate the sacrifice you have made of spending 7 hours on a track in a race-prepped E36.
On my 911 I run Michelin Pilot Sport 4S as a daily and Yokohama Advan A052 on the track. Very very happy with both after testing countless tire brands.
By far the best track tire review period
Thanak you :)
Another scientific-grade content from the best tyre channel out there.
Still thrilled for the knowledge each time you produce a video !
Huge thanks ;)
PS: A EU version would be the ultimate test for my use ^^ (NS-2R, 595 RR, AR-1...)
I always go for Falken, just love them.
Great content and so much valuable work done for us consumers/drivers. I would love to see time comparison with excellent UHP tyre like P4S or Potenza Sport. Thanks again for such high quality content.
Something for next time!
Great, concise review. I would love to see an update, to include at least the Continental ExtremeContact Force, as well as any other updated or new 200TW track tires.
For YOU TUBE you are the God of tyre test, you help as to bay better products
:)
Great job buddy!
Thanks
nice video I'm on my second set of falken rt660s for autocross and they have been fantastic
Can’t wait for the addition of the new extreme contact FORCE continental / Hoosier 200TW collab. Great review thank you.
I have a first test of that soon
@@tyrereviews make sure you add the Nankang CR-1
Best tire reviews on the internet, not just youtube.
Once again, THANK YOU 🥇👍🇫🇮
My pleasure :)
Very thorough testing which is great to see.
Have to echo one of the other comments here. We need a UK trackday tyre option test on a typical UK trackday car, like those Clio cups from the 2000 era. Some of the questions would be if you were a beginner (or only go occasionally) what should you take (perhaps a more normal road tyre like a PS4S or an even more normal UHP tyre that you might have on your car that you commute with) and then if you're more seasoned then perhaps something more aggressive and what differences you start to notice over the 'beginner' options 👍
I for one took my terrible Bridgestone runflats the first time I went on track, helped me wear through them so I could buy a better option quicker 😂. But they were totally fine for a total beginner like myself!
Great information and testing! For trackdays I have tried AD08, RE71R, Hankook RS-3 and RS-4, and RT660. I just loved the RS-3 and RS-4 for the durability. I agree the RT660 (as well as RE71R) had immense grip but as a person going to trackdays for fun and not trying to break lap records, Hankooks will be my definite choice. RE71R and RT660 lasted about half as much trackdays as the Hankooks did.
Sounds like you have a good life :)
Fantastic video and as an Engineer truly appreciate the importance to proper data collection! Bravo on a great review
I would love to see the new Conti and the Nankang CR1 mixed in with these if that would be ever possible.
That will be one for next year :)
Great review!! I think that Falken tyres are vastly underrated. The road tyres are classed as mid range, but really do have a premium feel.
Totally agree!
You deserve a million subs
It was the one we needed ❤️ . Can you do the same with european semi slicks please ?
Can't wait to see a review of the new Continental ExtremeContact Force 200UTQG street track tire
Interested in seeing how the new 200tw Contis stack up
Been waiting to see a review for the continental extreme contact force. Hopefully you can do one soon.
I have a first test of them in a few weeks
Yes! It's finally here!!
I hope you enjoyed :)
@@tyrereviews Absolutely. Thanks for the awesome testing and video. I really didn't expect the Rival 1.5 S to be so competitive, let alone blow the other tires out of the water like it did. Really interesting stuff! I'd love to see how it compares to some off the other track tires out there like the Sport Cup 2 240 and Eagle F1 Supercar 3 (and R) models. Its only downside is the limited range of sizes it comes in.
Finally! You came through. Just for me. You're the best.
I already have the Falkens, nice to know they're that good especially considering they're one of the cheapest.
Mega for the price
RT660''s blistered after one long and hot track day. I can't adjust camber so that had some to do with it. I guess I'll go back to the RT615K+ since lap times don't really matter. I'll lose a second (or more) a lap, but the tires will last.
Excellent review! If there was just a few information that's missing, it'd be what the controlled tire pressures are and the alignment of the car. The last bit is important as I've heard you need at least -2.5 degrees of camber for the A052s to make them work properly. I'm at -3.0 degrees with A052s running 35psi HOT and that seems to work great for me. Which what I found out about the A052s is they LOVE lower tire pressures, thus why they need a bit of camber.
Keep up the great work sir! Definitely need to try me a set of Rivals after seeing this as I've heard it has great heat management. Would work great for a FWD car.
Great review. The enthusiasm of a petrol head with the scientific approach of an industry boffin make these reviews both entertaining and educational.
Thank you
Great channel 👍
Epic place 😱
Epic car 😱
Interesting data 🤓
Don’t forget we’re here for more than the data though!
I’d love to see a couple of you go-pro fast laps, to get a feel for a lap and the speed 😀
this was great! I didn't realize the RS-4 was fast, as the wear is really long on these. The BFG better than the Falken that's a wow too. You should have said more about that E36 tho!
Amazing effort - well done.
If you do track tyres again it would be really interesting to add in a UUHP road tyre for comparison.
You'll find the next video interesting :)
Love the E36! Eurospec E36 M3 is my dream car
I want one so much!
I look forward to you comparing the continental extremecontact force to these tires, especially against the hankook rs4. Both tires seem to be aimed for endurance/longer races
Found the A052 video I was looking for, really helpful video. Confirmed what I’ve been hearing about peaky first lap then wearing pretty fast. Do you think you could please do a 0-100 acceleration video
In cars like this dry tractoin is almost meaningless, but you can look at braking which is like reverse traction. But I don't think I did that for this test either :D
One of your regular comments is along the lines of not wanting to bore people with extra data and footage.
Personally I'd love more! I appreciate not everyone geeks out on data but I'm sure loads do!
Great video though, and like everyone else I think your content is getting better and better!
thanks :)
Finally a test of Yokohama tires!
Daumen hoch für den E36 / Thumbs up for using an E36 =)
E36 lightweight! :D
Exactly the review I needed! I autocross a white e36 M3 Coupe. I had been running the BF Goodrich G Force 1.5s and really enjoyed them. This year I have switched to the Falken RT660 and like them even more! The Falken feels like it holds up better to heat compared to the BF Goodrich, especially on a heavy, high power car like the e36 on the Autocross circuit.
Glad you're enjoying them, though I'm not sure I would call the e36 heavy or high powered, unless yours is boosted :D
@@tyrereviews Among the group I autocross with, which drive a lot of S2000s and MX5s the M3 is chunky. However it is wonderfully narrow being 1 inch wider than an NA Miata and 1 inch narrower than an ND Miata. The straight line torque of the M3 along with balanced chassis really allows it to shine in a semi open track.
I won't claim it's the best car ever, but gosh I love the incredible satisfaction it provides. Mine just has the normal naturally aspirated tuning parts.
Me: I did 13 track days, 50 heat cycles and highway driving 1500 miles on the Falken 660. Great tire all around.
Jonathan: "maybe 4 more laps before you need to be concerned about wear"
Best tire reviews on the web.
Another great video. Will you be doing a track tyre test for E marked tyres?
That's the plan!
Fantastic work, I really can’t ask for much more to be honest. I am curious about tire pressures/alignments. Could certain tires behave differently or better on specific setups? For example could you add some toe out to the ones with extra under steer and change the result? Also some tires like more camber than others so maybe that would change things?
This has my brain buzzing about setups now.
Thanks again!
Awesome review as always. Just a shame to have the big brands missing.
These are all the key players in the 200tw category. If you are thinking of pilot S4s and the continental extreme contact, those are 300tw. Great tires but that's for another review. They are likely not as fast as these but are pretty close but make for a way better daily.
Hello, Great video as usual. Can you include the different compounds in each range, ie test each tyre with the different speed ratings, and/or do a test with the high wear tyres such as the Avon ZZR's and ZZS's. Maybe including a wet and damp lap test too, its good to see at which point when the weather is changing which tyres to run. Chees, Chris
from 2021, the cooper tyre seems like a twin to the Avon ZZS (exactly the same pattern)
very good in the wet, not so good in warm conditions ... like the cooper in this test.
since 2021, the compound of the avon as changed to pass through EU regulation, and now it's as good as the A052 in the warm (but alo
so, not as good as before in the wet) ... for a more expensive bill.
I missed the first compound, as daily drive tyres, that was perfect.
in lotus cup in Europe, the ZZS is the wet tyre (ZZR is the dry tyre)
you da man!!
Fantastic Review and quite informative. I must say I'd still like the RE-71 in there as it's the go-to for most, and the Federal 595RSR, RSR-R, and the newer Pro (is it really a RSR-R compound with stiffer sidewall and quieter driving?)
Keep the great work up 👏
You'll run out of the RE71s soon, buy them while you can! Federal will be in next test
top notch vid the only other tyres i would of liked to seen is the zestinos rs otherwise excellent vid
Great set of tires. Wish you could have also tested the Nexen Sur4g and the Federal 595 RS-R, RS-RR.
This is really excellent - thanks so much! Would love to see the “100” tread wear rating as well
Came here to say this
Nice review. Wasn't the BFG developed at this track?
Will you test the Nankang CR-1 in the next test? It looks like a hybrid of the A052 and the P Zero Trofeo R. It'll be interesting where this places relative to the top three in this test.
