Hi, I need to choose asap tyres for my BMW e61 530xi. I'm thinking about Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymetric 5 or Asymetric 6. I see that the review will be available at the end of March, one month more.. but maybe you could help me and tell me whether Asym 6 are better choice?
The amount of people in this world who have no clue about what a good tire will do to a cars handling, acceleration, comfort, safety, is mind boggling. People always look at me with two heads when I tell them how much I spend for my tires. Great channel!
I so agree and I also get the looks!! I spend $800 on premium (I researched based off this guy) winter tires for my suv. I drove past multiple people stuck and in an entire winter season this year was bad my abs light only kicked on 2 times. 2 times this whole winter! My tires are night and day over all seasons. I plan on getting an ES350 soon and my first purchases will be quality ceramic tint and quality performance summer tires with quality winter tires on thier own steel rims. It's gonna be a blast!
Impressed with the SportContact 7, Continental was really disappointing a decade ago and while they've been getting more and more competitive, especially the SportContact line, I didn't expect to see a big Michelin/Bridgestone-walloping step from them. And as someone who once did trackdays on road tires, I appreciate you making it very clear what the Goodyear is and isn't good for. As always, one of the most informative and well-produced channels on youtube!

@@dimmacommunication He does a lot on "High Performance" (this video is Ultra High), and to be frank you're really splitting hairs in the budget tyre market. Most stuff performs very similarly when you're less than $100 US per tyre. Just pick a brand you like. Or even better, don't pick a cheap tyre for any application.
These reviews are ace. Editing, format, structure, presentation, length, content, insight are bang on. Even leaving the full on specs on the website is a cracking choice. It would be very easy to make a 20 minute snooze fest with this subject matter. Also, it has to be said, there must be a hell of a lot of work that goes in to these!
Not only was the Continental tire the best in the performance categories it was also the lightest tire tested. That can improve acceleration in some cases. That tire just seems like a world beater.
Was wondering about Michelin PS5 and Goodyear AS6, then i looked at tires sizes at testing and understood why they aren't there at moment. Great comparsion!
Brilliant and through review. There is lots of love for the Goodyear Eagle F1 tyre as I purchased the Asymmetric 5 on the basis of your review Jonathan. So far, 400 miles in and I am loving its all round performance and sporty feel that it now gives my mk7.5 GTi performance.
Depending on your annual mileage, i can suggest you also dunlop rt (RT not rt2), i know they are older (and they wear very fast), but i have them on my golf and the grip is awesome even with 0 degrees and they are also perfect on heavy rain. (dunlop and goodyear are together)
a successor to the 4s, interesting!!! nvm apparently it's only a replacement for the 4, it might perform similar or maybe worse to 4s. I would like to see a 4s vs 5 comparison
@@tyrereviews Michelin Cup 2, I noticed the cup 2 have more grip on dry roads only if you bring them to a nice hot temperature, for everithing else the Cont 7 are superior even on the dry, amazing review! 👌
Thanks Jon for another fantastic review. I'm so glad that you include the tire weights in the specs and the braking distance. I computed the average longitudinal deceleration from the straight line braking distance and came up with 1.11g for the Continental and 0.99g for the mixed budget. That's really amazing for the Conti. I have much the same feeling about the Michelin PS4S that I have on my Z; great grip, great wet performance but too vague and imprecise on dry cornering. I may be asking too much from this tire that was not designed to excel in this category. Perhaps the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 would be better suited to my likes.
@@Bob-kt4yz No, my car with the OEM Bridgestone Potenza S007 didn't have the softer steering characteristics as this tire. The Potenzas had much stiffer sidewalls that contributed to their more precise response to steering inputs. Of course there was a tradeoff, in that the ride was harsher and a little noisier but I attribute the noise difference to the difference in tread design. Because of the less stiff sidewalls of the Michelins, I discovered that I had to increase inflation pressures by about 12 psi over the Bridgestone's pressures to maintain equal wear across the tread width. I did not say that the Michelins were not excellent road tires, they are, but I was commenting on what I surmised as a deliberate design difference that was aimed to satisfy a particular market need. I see the value in what expert drivers like Jon here provide in giving us helpful information about the handling characteristics of these not so cheap tires and I also appreciate the thoughtful comments of others who can share their driving experiences with these tires on different cars. I am puzzled by what you found so amusing in my comment, perhaps I'm missing something?
@@Bob-kt4yz No problem Jon, I didn't realize it was you. Sometimes I can be a little obtuse. My Z is a 370 and yes it is too heavy for my liking. That's my main complaint about the car, although Nissan's engineers did work hard to keep the weight down with things like aluminium doors, hood and hatch. I'm planning on putting the car on a diet to see how much excess weight I can shed without affecting the aesthetics. Future mods include lighter Magnesium wheels and two piece brake rotors with aluminum hats, for lower unsprung weight and better suspension dynamics.
@@Bob-kt4yz That's a good point in favor of having tires that are more supple, a good term with which to describe that characteristic. The roads in the San Francisco bay area, where I live, have deteriorated badly over the years and so it might not be a bad idea to have such tires on the expensive mag wheels I'm considering. I already have to drive carefully in going over speed bumps and driveway dips, so as to avoid scraping my car's chin spoiler and the front tire's wind deflectors.

The biggest issue with the ContactSport 6 was the wear, drastically lower than other tyres. Continental claims the 7 lasts 17% longer than the 6, but honestly that's not enough. That'd still be a huge way behind other brands.
I love watching these uploads and listening to your reviews and I make up my mind what to buy then I look and all the top tyre manufacturers never make them in 17” yes I know it’s old fashioned running 17 but as with most small cars 18’s run terrible compared to 17’s so at the moment I can’t buy any off the top makes which is very annoying, Keep up the great work 👍

Bought the Potenza Sport last year and I‘m impressed, I’m still keeping an eye on wear but so far it’s been pretty good. The performance it delivers after a little warm up is outstanding in my opinion.
They give much more sporty ride and steering feel than the PS4 which seems to have been listed the only sport tyre by many. The initial 6.7mm is a shame and when it’s hot it wears faster. So for a part time sports car they are my fav, but for a daily the Goodyear or Michelin are bit more suitable. For rs3 or the lambo I can see why they are a good factory choice
@@gazman9468 my potenza sports lasted ages more than 2 trackdays, they are the hardest compound out all the road tyres so last the longest. I think you been running the wrong pressures
I have ps4s couldn’t agree with you more whilst they’re very safe and a great all rounder, they don’t feel sporty at all, on turn in slow to respond. I fell for the UA-cam hype on Michelins will be trying the contis or Bridgestones next - BMW M2 owner
It would have been great to have the falken fk510 for these sizes. This video is otherwise spot on. The weight and track wear is a great idea for this kind of vehicule. Maybe a picture of the tread after the day would be also useful, to see if the tire as been running on its flank etc...
Had the FK510 on my 997S. Literally felt like a winter tire when hustling the car. Could have been the rear bias of my car, but I couldn’t get those off of my car fast enough. Wet grip and comfort was good, as was dry grip, but super soft sidewalls ruined the total experience.
@@amrit10 As someone who doesnt put winter tyres on (live in australia), how would you compare the dry grip compared to stallwarts like michelin PS4S. Is it about 85% as good? IMO the question is do we even push the tyres hard enough to see these differences on road? I have a feeling we dont even cross that threshold that you only really would see on track when absolutely flogging it. But this is from me who has no experience with them
@@supaahflyy I had the same thinking, can I get close to the grip of a top tier tyre with less cost? Yes, in corner grip is quite good, and maybe 85% of the PS4S. The problem for me was that the steering felt mushy at all times. Slower reaction to steering inputs, and unforgivable for me, high speed straight line instability (above 120kmh due to soft sidewalls). Increasing tyre pressures did not help
Fantastic review as always my man. What would be interesting is if you can measure wear on the tyres, and life expectancy. I was always under the impression the continentals wore out fairly quickly, and Michelins had a (in the USA) guarantee on mileage. These tyres cost big money, and that's a reasonable consideration.
Fantastic review as always, but you've already spoiled us with your way of doing it. As I've tried the Michelin PS4, PS4S and Michelin Pilot Super Sport, I still like the old Super Sport the best, older compound but no vagueness as with PS4s, feels much sportier to me. Now I'm on GY F1 Supersport and really happy with it.
I replaced the Bridgestone Potenza S001 with the Conti Sport contact 7 and I am very, very happy. Specially during this very wet spring here in Switzerland.
actually wasn't surprised about Nankang. They are often brought up on forums and a few race teams actually use them for their decent performance and cheaper price.

Something I noticed was that the weight of the Continental was around 900g lighter than the other tyres - which isn't a massive unsprung saving, but I assume that had a positive impact on feel at very least?
I’m looking forward to seeing reviews of the latest Falken Azenis, the FK520. Based on your recommendation I stuck some on a V6 Saab wagon. They were immense. Tried them on my RCZ, also great, as was the Maxxis VS5. Now to decide on a new set for the latest car, a C350cdi.
Tbh the biggest upside of the PS4S is how long it lasts for daily driving. You can easily get 30k-40k miles out of them. You get great value for that tire, however I’m curious as to how many real world miles you get out of the Continental

Would it be possible to do the review of worn-out ( 1,6-2 mm tread depth ) budget tyres of no-name brands versus top brands, is there still a significant difference in braking, handling and etc.?
Another excellent review. I readily admit to being a bit of a Michelin advocate but I think I'm going to try the Continentals next time around. The aquaplaning resistance is a small concern but otherwise definitely worth trying. Thank you.
The aquaplane resistance is relatively poor out of the other UHP tyres but I think as long as you're not driving like a mad man in wet weather, you should be fine. I myself have only used Contis on my car as the Michelins tend to be around some 20-30£ more expensive in my country (x5 the amount)
@@randomesteven3935 I agree with you for the most part. I fell in love with the Michelin's from the first time I used them. As I live in the tropics I especially appreciated them in wet weather. Sudden and torrential downpours are definitely a thing. Unfortunately, while my country does have legislation regarding minimum tire tread depth it is almost universally ignored. Also, the majority of the population take advantage of 'foreign-used' tires so the tread depth is border-line from the moment they put them on their vehicle. This results in some questionable driving habits in the wet. Vehicles going 60-65 km/h in the overtaking lane of a 100 km/h highway is regretfully common (lane discipline is also sadly lacking). So, any advantage I can get in wet weather driving I'm inclined to take.
Here is another thought. How about doing a comparison of the tires internal structure by cutting them open and showing the cross section view, for example, the thickness of the tire wall and the expensive safety features that make for tire safety?

That Continental Sportcontact 7 looks fantastic. However, in the US you can only get that tire in two 21” sizes. That is useless for us because most cars can’t work with that diameter of tire. What good is a tire if it isn’t available in sizes we need?

I've fitted 245/45 18 GY Supersport on a Tesla performance 3. All I can say is like the name, a supersport tyre. Fun on off/on ramps. Squared setup with light rims(8.5kg) combined 19kg per corner. Will try with lower tyre pressure this season. 40 hot.
Nice work! I look forward to these all year. I would love to see a comparison of tires for 15 inch wheels, if there are enough changes in that market to warrant such a test. My 85 MR2 can't go any bigger. Cheers!
Great roundup! 2 years in, I’m loving the PS4S on my 440i. I agree, there is a definite delay in steering at the upper limit. But hard to find a better all round tire IMO. But man those Continentals!
Great review! Nnow it would be great to know the results of UHP on this car. I know UHP were done few months back, but it was done on FWD hatchback and results just doesn't translate if one is looking for the tyres to fit on luxury car. I feel that Premium UHP tyres are most at home on luxury car (say BMW 3 or 5 series, MB or Lexus) - the cars with decent amount of power, RWD, but not track cars. As such it is hard to know what to fit on Luxury car, when results comes from hot-hatch on the track, yet one would not fit UUHP on such cars, because they just not getting tracked.
The time of year to switch back to summer tires is approaching here in France, so for the first time ever i'm "ringing the bell" because the PS5 test will decide what i'm buying next month 🔔
While I haven't been able to work them to their extremes, I've very much enjoyed my Continental TrueContact tires. I'd love to be able to run a good uhp in the summer, and maybe go back to a good winter rated all season when it gets cold (southeast US). Definitely loving continental...I may see about getting a set of those, or at least the Extreme Contact soon.
Hi James. Do you know the difference in the extreme contact, sport contact, true contact, and control contact continental tires? I got the discount tire exclusive control contact sport srs + tires and can't for the life of me find the answer. I'm hoping they are as good as the ones in this video
@@gretre4560 the extreme contact is a UHP all season tire, as is the control contact, the true contact is an all season touring tire, and the sport contact is a summer tire. The extreme contact and control contact should be somewhat similar, I would think.

I can assure you no. There can sometimes be a VERY small home advantage but nearly every tyre test you see will be done at a PG owned by a tyre manufacture, as they're the only places to do them properly (short of somewhere like idiada which is impossible to film at and even if you do it there you're hosted by a tyre manufacturer). We're very lucky that in europe at least there's a good history with independent testing. You can also check out all the other testes of the SC7 on www.tyrereviews.com from other PGs.
I’m still wondering why your graphs don’t start at zero. Differences between tires look huge while in reality they aren’t. Also I would love to see a big test on used tires that are near the minimum tread depth to see how they hold up compared to each other and the manufacturers performance claims!
Great review as always, clear, informative and entertaining! The Conti SC7 delivers amazing performance. On a previous vehicle, I very much enjoyed the feel and grip of it's Conti5P tires, but found the wear to be very high, in line with it's low UTQG wear rating number. The Michelin PS4S that replaced them much better wear resistance as was suggested by it's better UTQG wear number (300 vs 240 for the Contis), albeit at the expense of steering feel as I see you've noted for the PS4S. I understand the UTQG ratings are not always representative of true wear performance, and I note that Conti doesn't publish these ratings (on their USA site at least), so my question is: is there now a reliable wear rating system for tires and if not, have you been able to gain any impression of how the Conti SC7's will wear? Looking forward to seeing how the next iteration of the PS S series compares! Also eager to see the upcoming PS5 test.

You are right. I recently bought a Jaguar XKR 5.0 Ltr with two different budget tyres on the back and the cheapest Nexens on the front. It was lethal under power in the dry. The next day I swapped to Contis.
Awesome work as always! I wonder about the duration of the Contis? Remember the Pirellis they put on Gulia Quatroformagio from the factory? Great performance but gone after 5k km..
Blame Alfa for that lol. I've not seen any wear test of the new SC7 however the recently conti tyres such as PC6 and ASC have all been very good in wear.
Another brilliant test. Conti 7 certainly have raised the benchmark, not that the 6's were bad! I'm delighted with my asymmetric 5's currently on a GR4 daily, pleased I didn't get the supersport, but excited to see your forthcoming review with the new asymmetric 6 and ps5 etc 👍
@Voll Care Lol... Hi mate. Got the "less popular" standard set up BUT with uk convenience pack brilliant extras to make it an enjoyable daily😉 Re ps4s's vs A5's. Had ps4s's on my previous i30N performance pack and have driven the circuit pack car, demo, 5 times now. 3 times pre decision to get the Convenience pack, twice since owning mine. For road usage, firstly the ps4s's, imo, are less talkative/vaguer in steering feel. Secondly, their sidewalls are quite soft. On my N, only full N suspension worked perfectly. Anything softer was a little leany/rolly. Don't get me wrong. On the circuit pack GR4 they marry up very well. Arguably, one could go significantly firmer on the sidewalls still but they are very good. For me their party piece is probably uk damp and at around 3-5 Celsius. I think they're better vs the A5's there, but it's marginal. In all other weather conditions, adding the better steering feel and firmer sidewalls I prefer the A5's tbh. Actually wish I'd put them on my N. As far as standard set up vs Circuit pack😉. For road usage only I don't believe the circuit pack is necessary or better. It's firmer, slightly flatter and with heavier steering, very noticeable after 4+ hours. In 5 drives on the road I only managed to get the front torsen to activate on the last occasion, in a 4+ hours driving period and 3 out of 5 same road bends/turns. I was also exaggerating my turn in to get that to happen. All keeping esc on. It felt slightly artificial the way the steering wheel pulled. Yes the differential was Very effective but quite aggressive imo. Very different to the N's e-diff. Reminded me of perhaps the focus RS mk2/mazda 3 mps?? That's a memory from a good while ago though! Possibly the circuit's rear torsen activated too, hence the slightly aggressive turn in sensation. Hard to be sure?? Actually preferred mine for a more natural feeling. It still grips phenomenally well plus far more relaxing on long journeys and that's b4 the extra comforts and toys. However, the circuit is definitely about 1-2 tenths more capable if truly on it road wise and therefore probably significantly more so if tracking and likely definitely a different story if disabling esc! However, for my spirited road drives that's not applicable or relevant 👍 Can't wait for the A6 reviews 😍

PS4S is not available in 245/35 18 Thought about F1 SS, Asym5/6 or PS5 Excited for first asym6 and PS5 reviews
@Voll Care Think we've chatted b4?? Interesting comments... Playful, as in oversteer, I can't confirm. I'm all about grip grip grip... Is yours rwd or xdrive as in European models? I'd have been seriously tempted if they'd sold the xdrive over here!! Such a beautiful engine sound!! If favouring oversteer, this reviewer and his reviews should answer your question. A5's definitely have the better steering feel imo. More sensation and direct. They're extremely grippy in dry and wet. Totally confidence inspiring which would be great for rwd. Personally, I'd be happier with even firmer sidewalls, but that's likely because the Standard GR4 suspension is very compliant and can easily take more stiffness. PSS lol... I had them on a seat Leon cupra R 265 2011 😉 Yes, great in warm and dry conditions but I doubt I got more than around 6 tenths of their actual capabilities on the public roads. Wet, they were pants!! I had asymmetric 2 or 3's b4 and regretted changing. If you have time I'd wait for the asymmetric 6 reviews first and the ps5 etc. Not sure if a second version of the f1 supersport is imminent re release yet? The conti 7 sounds very good too. All depends on what dynamic capabilities you are after and is it road or track usage etc..... Best of luck!
@@James-RJM yes i do habe a RWD M140 with LSD and ca -2 degree camber front. 95% daily driving, 5 % Alps Tour and NOS. Yes I don’t need the last 3% of lateral grip, what I want is a joyfull tyre with steering feedback and directness. PS4 are a bit „boring“ to drive what i heard, so looking for Asym5 (6)if the Asym5 is a sharper tyre it could become my pick

I can give you feedback in a few weeks when i get my continentals fitted. I had Bridgestones Potenza Sports last year and before that Michelin PS4S, so i can give you some feedback on differences between those 3 😁
@@zuzo777 oh hehe completely forgot, they are a very well balanced tyre and best out of the 3 i would say, doesnt need much heat and somehow its frightening how similar wet grip feels to dry grip, you have to be careful because it just makes you push the car more. Bridgestones are more direct but not much in it. In corners Bridgestones in the back run out of grip before Contis do. I would rate it 9.5/10 for a uhp tyre. Very versitile with slight weak area being comfort and aquaplaning you have to watch out for it because the car gives you so much confidence in the wet.

Dont forget that Michelin did now launch the PS5, sadly it wasnt in this test but it may be as good as the SC7, maybe its still worse, we dont know.

@@dimmacommunication He does a lot on "High Performance" (this video is Ultra High), and to be frank you're really splitting hairs in the budget tyre market. Most stuff performs very similarly when you're less than $100 US per tyre. Just pick a brand you like. Or even better, don't pick a cheap tyre for any application.
Problem with contiental tires are that they wear out far too quick, that's why i prefer michelin 4S.

These reviews are ace. Editing, format, structure, presentation, length, content, insight are bang on. Even leaving the full on specs on the website is a cracking choice. It would be very easy to make a 20 minute snooze fest with this subject matter.
Also, it has to be said, there must be a hell of a lot of work that goes in to these!
Not only was the Continental tire the best in the performance categories it was also the lightest tire tested. That can improve acceleration in some cases. That tire just seems like a world beater.
Tires are too narrow contact patches are too small.
As said by others, they wear really fast. Mine gone in 10000-12000 km. But i will buy it again because they are that awesome
I’ve done around 30k kilometers on Contis and still have life left. I drive spiritely but admittedly 80% of my kms are motorways.

I went for the Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersports on my E46 M3 based on your reviews, and I've been super impressed with them! The grip is unreal.
I have thought about switching to that tire for me e46 m3 but I have been a Michelin fan boy for years.

Brilliant and through review. There is lots of love for the Goodyear Eagle F1 tyre as I purchased the Asymmetric 5 on the basis of your review Jonathan. So far, 400 miles in and I am loving its all round performance and sporty feel that it now gives my mk7.5 GTi performance.

Have the same tyres on my 7.5 GTE , on 7 gti clubsport 18" belvedere rims.
Depending on your annual mileage, i can suggest you also dunlop rt (RT not rt2), i know they are older (and they wear very fast), but i have them on my golf and the grip is awesome even with 0 degrees and they are also perfect on heavy rain. (dunlop and goodyear are together)

I'm so glad that you include the tire weights in the specs and the braking distance. I computed the average longitudinal deceleration from the straight line braking distance and came up with 1.11g for the Continental and 0.99g for the mixed budget. That's really amazing for the Conti.
I have much the same feeling about the Michelin PS4S that I have on my Z; great grip, great wet performance but too vague and imprecise on dry cornering. I may be asking too much from this tire that was not designed to excel in this category. Perhaps the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 would be better suited to my likes.

@@Bob-kt4yz No, my car with the OEM Bridgestone Potenza S007 didn't have the softer steering characteristics as this tire. The Potenzas had much stiffer sidewalls that contributed to their more precise response to steering inputs. Of course there was a tradeoff, in that the ride was harsher and a little noisier but I attribute the noise difference to the difference in tread design. Because of the less stiff sidewalls of the Michelins, I discovered that I had to increase inflation pressures by about 12 psi over the Bridgestone's pressures to maintain equal wear across the tread width.
I did not say that the Michelins were not excellent road tires, they are, but I was commenting on what I surmised as a deliberate design difference that was aimed to satisfy a particular market need. I see the value in what expert drivers like Jon here provide in giving us helpful information about the handling characteristics of these not so cheap tires and I also appreciate the thoughtful comments of others who can share their driving experiences with these tires on different cars. I am puzzled by what you found so amusing in my comment, perhaps I'm missing something?

My Z is a 370 and yes it is too heavy for my liking. That's my main complaint about the car, although Nissan's engineers did work hard to keep the weight down with things like aluminium doors, hood and hatch. I'm planning on putting the car on a diet to see how much excess weight I can shed without affecting the aesthetics. Future mods include lighter Magnesium wheels and two piece brake rotors with aluminum hats, for lower unsprung weight and better suspension dynamics.
@@Bob-kt4yz That's a good point in favor of having tires that are more supple, a good term with which to describe that characteristic. The roads in the San Francisco bay area, where I live, have deteriorated badly over the years and so it might not be a bad idea to have such tires on the expensive mag wheels I'm considering. I already have to drive carefully in going over speed bumps and driveway dips, so as to avoid scraping my car's chin spoiler and the front tire's wind deflectors.

The biggest issue with the ContactSport 6 was the wear, drastically lower than other tyres. Continental claims the 7 lasts 17% longer than the 6, but honestly that's not enough. That'd still be a huge way behind other brands.
Glad you mentioned this because that is the only way to get the results of the Continental, by leaving a ton of rubber on the track

I love watching these uploads and listening to your reviews and I make up my mind what to buy then I look and all the top tyre manufacturers never make them in 17” yes I know it’s old fashioned running 17 but as with most small cars 18’s run terrible compared to 17’s so at the moment I can’t buy any off the top makes which is very annoying, Keep up the great work 👍

You know a man loves tyres when his voice goes up an octave or two describing their qualities.
Bought the Potenza Sport last year and I‘m impressed, I’m still keeping an eye on wear but so far it’s been pretty good. The performance it delivers after a little warm up is outstanding in my opinion.
They give much more sporty ride and steering feel than the PS4 which seems to have been listed the only sport tyre by many. The initial 6.7mm is a shame and when it’s hot it wears faster. So for a part time sports car they are my fav, but for a daily the Goodyear or Michelin are bit more suitable. For rs3 or the lambo I can see why they are a good factory choice
Just don't take them on track! I did and they were ruined in a day. For a road tyre they're a decent choice though.

Recently I swapped both my summer (PremiumContact 7) and winter (WinterContact TS860) tire set to Continental and I´m very satisfied with them
I have ps4s couldn’t agree with you more whilst they’re very safe and a great all rounder, they don’t feel sporty at all, on turn in slow to respond.
I fell for the UA-cam hype on Michelins will be trying the contis or Bridgestones next - BMW M2 owner

This video is otherwise spot on. The weight and track wear is a great idea for this kind of vehicule. Maybe a picture of the tread after the day would be also useful, to see if the tire as been running on its flank etc...
The FK520 was announced already but not available so I had to skip it
Had the FK510 on my 997S. Literally felt like a winter tire when hustling the car. Could have been the rear bias of my car, but I couldn’t get those off of my car fast enough. Wet grip and comfort was good, as was dry grip, but super soft sidewalls ruined the total experience.

IMO the question is do we even push the tyres hard enough to see these differences on road? I have a feeling we dont even cross that threshold that you only really would see on track when absolutely flogging it. But this is from me who has no experience with them
@@supaahflyy I had the same thinking, can I get close to the grip of a top tier tyre with less cost? Yes, in corner grip is quite good, and maybe 85% of the PS4S. The problem for me was that the steering felt mushy at all times. Slower reaction to steering inputs, and unforgivable for me, high speed straight line instability (above 120kmh due to soft sidewalls). Increasing tyre pressures did not help

What would be interesting is if you can measure wear on the tyres, and life expectancy. I was always under the impression the continentals wore out fairly quickly, and Michelins had a (in the USA) guarantee on mileage. These tyres cost big money, and that's a reasonable consideration.

Fantastic review as always, but you've already spoiled us with your way of doing it. As I've tried the Michelin PS4, PS4S and Michelin Pilot Super Sport, I still like the old Super Sport the best, older compound but no vagueness as with PS4s, feels much sportier to me. Now I'm on GY F1 Supersport and really happy with it.
I replaced the Bridgestone Potenza S001 with the Conti Sport contact 7 and I am very, very happy. Specially during this very wet spring here in Switzerland.
Would have loved to see the newest Pirelli in this test along with the new Michelin PS5. Congrats to the Conti though. That is a very impressive tire.
actually wasn't surprised about Nankang. They are often brought up on forums and a few race teams actually use them for their decent performance and cheaper price.

Something I noticed was that the weight of the Continental was around 900g lighter than the other tyres - which isn't a massive unsprung saving, but I assume that had a positive impact on feel at very least?

Tbh the biggest upside of the PS4S is how long it lasts for daily driving. You can easily get 30k-40k miles out of them. You get great value for that tire, however I’m curious as to how many real world miles you get out of the Continental

Another excellent review. I readily admit to being a bit of a Michelin advocate but I think I'm going to try the Continentals next time around. The aquaplaning resistance is a small concern but otherwise definitely worth trying. Thank you.
I agree. PS4S are quite old so the crown was bound to be taken one day.
The aquaplane resistance is relatively poor out of the other UHP tyres but I think as long as you're not driving like a mad man in wet weather, you should be fine.
I myself have only used Contis on my car as the Michelins tend to be around some 20-30£ more expensive in my country (x5 the amount)
@@randomesteven3935 I agree with you for the most part. I fell in love with the Michelin's from the first time I used them. As I live in the tropics I especially appreciated them in wet weather. Sudden and torrential downpours are definitely a thing.
Unfortunately, while my country does have legislation regarding minimum tire tread depth it is almost universally ignored. Also, the majority of the population take advantage of 'foreign-used' tires so the tread depth is border-line from the moment they put them on their vehicle. This results in some questionable driving habits in the wet. Vehicles going 60-65 km/h in the overtaking lane of a 100 km/h highway is regretfully common (lane discipline is also sadly lacking). So, any advantage I can get in wet weather driving I'm inclined to take.
Here is another thought. How about doing a comparison of the tires internal structure by cutting them open and showing the cross section view, for example, the thickness of the tire wall and the expensive safety features that make for tire safety?

That Continental Sportcontact 7 looks fantastic. However, in the US you can only get that tire in two 21” sizes. That is useless for us because most cars can’t work with that diameter of tire.

I think 4S is great when going at 7/10 from the limit, it's a bit relaxed and still very grippy and somewhat comfy.

I've fitted 245/45 18 GY Supersport on a Tesla performance 3. All I can say is like the name, a supersport tyre. Fun on off/on ramps.
Squared setup with light rims(8.5kg) combined 19kg per corner. Will try with lower tyre pressure this season. 40 hot.

I think the type of test you want for your mr2 will sadly never be done :( There are 15" tests every year but not for those sort of tyres

Great review! Nnow it would be great to know the results of UHP on this car. I know UHP were done few months back, but it was done on FWD hatchback and results just doesn't translate if one is looking for the tyres to fit on luxury car. I feel that Premium UHP tyres are most at home on luxury car (say BMW 3 or 5 series, MB or Lexus) - the cars with decent amount of power, RWD, but not track cars. As such it is hard to know what to fit on Luxury car, when results comes from hot-hatch on the track, yet one would not fit UUHP on such cars, because they just not getting tracked.
The time of year to switch back to summer tires is approaching here in France, so for the first time ever i'm "ringing the bell" because the PS5 test will decide what i'm buying next month 🔔

Hi James. Do you know the difference in the extreme contact, sport contact, true contact, and control contact continental tires? I got the discount tire exclusive control contact sport srs + tires and can't for the life of me find the answer. I'm hoping they are as good as the ones in this video
@@gretre4560 the extreme contact is a UHP all season tire, as is the control contact, the true contact is an all season touring tire, and the sport contact is a summer tire.
The extreme contact and control contact should be somewhat similar, I would think.

I can assure you no. There can sometimes be a VERY small home advantage but nearly every tyre test you see will be done at a PG owned by a tyre manufacture, as they're the only places to do them properly (short of somewhere like idiada which is impossible to film at and even if you do it there you're hosted by a tyre manufacturer). We're very lucky that in europe at least there's a good history with independent testing. You can also check out all the other testes of the SC7 on www.tyrereviews.com from other PGs.
I’m still wondering why your graphs don’t start at zero. Differences between tires look huge while in reality they aren’t.
Also I would love to see a big test on used tires that are near the minimum tread depth to see how they hold up compared to each other and the manufacturers performance claims!

Great review as always, clear, informative and entertaining! The Conti SC7 delivers amazing performance.
On a previous vehicle, I very much enjoyed the feel and grip of it's Conti5P tires, but found the wear to be very high, in line with it's low UTQG wear rating number. The Michelin PS4S that replaced them much better wear resistance as was suggested by it's better UTQG wear number (300 vs 240 for the Contis), albeit at the expense of steering feel as I see you've noted for the PS4S. I understand the UTQG ratings are not always representative of true wear performance, and I note that Conti doesn't publish these ratings (on their USA site at least), so my question is: is there now a reliable wear rating system for tires and if not, have you been able to gain any impression of how the Conti SC7's will wear?
Looking forward to seeing how the next iteration of the PS S series compares! Also eager to see the upcoming PS5 test.

You are right. I recently bought a Jaguar XKR 5.0 Ltr with two different budget tyres on the back and the cheapest Nexens on the front. It was lethal under power in the dry. The next day I swapped to Contis.

Blame Alfa for that lol. I've not seen any wear test of the new SC7 however the recently conti tyres such as PC6 and ASC have all been very good in wear.

Conti 7 certainly have raised the benchmark, not that the 6's were bad!
I'm delighted with my asymmetric 5's currently on a GR4 daily, pleased I didn't get the supersport, but excited to see your forthcoming review with the new asymmetric 6 and ps5 etc 👍
How‘s the difference if the Asym to the OEM PS4S on your GR Yaris ?

Re ps4s's vs A5's.
Had ps4s's on my previous i30N performance pack and have driven the circuit pack car, demo, 5 times now.
3 times pre decision to get the Convenience pack, twice since owning mine.
For road usage, firstly the ps4s's, imo, are less talkative/vaguer in steering feel.
Secondly, their sidewalls are quite soft. On my N, only full N suspension worked perfectly. Anything softer was a little leany/rolly.
Don't get me wrong. On the circuit pack GR4 they marry up very well. Arguably, one could go significantly firmer on the sidewalls still but they are very good.
For me their party piece is probably uk damp and at around 3-5 Celsius. I think they're better vs the A5's there, but it's marginal.
In all other weather conditions, adding the better steering feel and firmer sidewalls I prefer the A5's tbh.
Actually wish I'd put them on my N.
As far as standard set up vs Circuit pack😉.
For road usage only I don't believe the circuit pack is necessary or better.
It's firmer, slightly flatter and with heavier steering, very noticeable after 4+ hours.
In 5 drives on the road I only managed to get the front torsen to activate on the last occasion, in a 4+ hours driving period and 3 out of 5 same road bends/turns. I was also exaggerating my turn in to get that to happen. All keeping esc on.
It felt slightly artificial the way the steering wheel pulled.
Yes the differential was Very effective but quite aggressive imo. Very different to the N's e-diff. Reminded me of perhaps the focus RS mk2/mazda 3 mps?? That's a memory from a good while ago though!
Possibly the circuit's rear torsen activated too, hence the slightly aggressive turn in sensation. Hard to be sure??
Actually preferred mine for a more natural feeling. It still grips phenomenally well plus far more relaxing on long journeys and that's b4 the extra comforts and toys.
However, the circuit is definitely about 1-2 tenths more capable if truly on it road wise and therefore probably significantly more so if tracking and likely definitely a different story if disabling esc!
However, for my spirited road drives that's not applicable or relevant 👍

But according to your experience the Asym5 is even more playful and direct as the PS4S right?!
Looking for a replacement for the OEM PSS on M140i in 18“ and as a pure summer tyre April-October as daily.
PSS is a bit weak in wet, but great immdry&hot.
PS4S is not available in 245/35 18

A5's definitely have the better steering feel imo. More sensation and direct. They're extremely grippy in dry and wet. Totally confidence inspiring which would be great for rwd. Personally, I'd be happier with even firmer sidewalls, but that's likely because the Standard GR4 suspension is very compliant and can easily take more stiffness.

Yes, great in warm and dry conditions but I doubt I got more than around 6 tenths of their actual capabilities on the public roads.
Wet, they were pants!! I had asymmetric 2 or 3's b4 and regretted changing.
If you have time I'd wait for the asymmetric 6 reviews first and the ps5 etc.
Not sure if a second version of the f1 supersport is imminent re release yet?
The conti 7 sounds very good too.
All depends on what dynamic capabilities you are after and is it road or track usage etc.....

Yes I don’t need the last 3% of lateral grip, what I want is a joyfull tyre with steering feedback and directness.
PS4 are a bit „boring“ to drive what i heard, so looking for Asym5 (6)if the Asym5 is a sharper tyre it could become my pick

Always enjoy watching these. Wonder how the tyres would react differently on a sporty fwd car vs the rear drive here. Like a veloceter n or a civic type r or a GTI.
That would be a good watch as well! Perhaps bring both a GTI and a Golf R to see how much the AWD factors in...
I can give you feedback in a few weeks when i get my continentals fitted. I had Bridgestones Potenza Sports last year and before that Michelin PS4S, so i can give you some feedback on differences between those 3 😁

@@zuzo777 oh hehe completely forgot, they are a very well balanced tyre and best out of the 3 i would say, doesnt need much heat and somehow its frightening how similar wet grip feels to dry grip, you have to be careful because it just makes you push the car more. Bridgestones are more direct but not much in it. In corners Bridgestones in the back run out of grip before Contis do. I would rate it 9.5/10 for a uhp tyre. Very versitile with slight weak area being comfort and aquaplaning you have to watch out for it because the car gives you so much confidence in the wet.
