Prior to the Subie era, in the early to mid-80's in Sydney, there was a joyrider known as the "Porsche Kid". He only stole 911's and used them to bait cops into chases. Parents are ex coppa's from NSW and they always used to say that they could never catch the WRX's. After seeing this I had to ask them more questions and tell them, "there's a documentary about who you couldn't catch 🤣".
I'd say more more like 2 Fast 2 Furious vibes. Cause it actually had an Evo, used as a getaway car to transport drug money (and funnily enough the Eclipse had a WRX's engine sound dubbed over). The only difference being of course that Brian and Roman were ultimately in league with the police, not the criminals.
It would be really cool if you could make a video about the frequent use of the Audi RS6 as a getaway car for blowing up ATMs in Germany and the Netherlands
I knew through boys that were using them here in Sydney. It started with RS Turbos, then when the WRX hit Australia it was massively popular to steal them. Any 4wd turbo was good, but they loved the WRX. A mate of mine got shot in a stolen WRX in Sydney. Survived, but still with a bullet in his chest
The cops here in Sydney hated them so bad. I remember back in 2000 in the peak of the ram raids my mate was driving home in his MY2000 and had blown pretty much the whole gearbox and only had 5th so was putting with hazards on got pulled over cops came out with guns drawn and pulled him out of the car. (Quite rare in Aust for cops to draw guns). After some questioning while cuffed and a few phone calls. They apologised. Their reason was theat they saw the car going so slow with hazards flashing and thought it was stolen and the shitty factory immobiliser was trying to do its thing.
Real talk, my mate was one of the guys that were doing ATMs and Smash N Grabs with these WRXs here in the inner city of Sydney. He ended up being shot by the police in a stolen WRX after doing a Ram Raid. The officer was charged with 4 charges, but wasn't convicted, if I remember correctly. The entire reason why NSW police bought the WRX police car was because of his crew. It was a great time growing up in Sydney back then. There were hotties (stolen or "hot" cars) in the area all the time. WRXs, RS Turbos, GTRs, Porsches, you name it. What's left unsaid in this story, is that it was all because of how hard heroin Sydney. The Viet boys in Cabramatta were making millions, and every inner city crim was out there terrorising the city. It never stopped in the early GC8 Ram Raid days though. They ended up moving on to Armaguards. My cousin got arrested in a $6 million dollar armed robbery. Sydney was off tap back then.
@@endjfcar Honestly, most of them are doing long sentences in jail these days. Sydney had a massive crime wave back then. Some of them were “good kids” that got dragged into it by a worse group, but most were already petty criminals that got much worse once they were addicted. Google “Sydney Armaguard $6 million” and you’ll see what they ended up doing. My cousin was arrested in the sweep they did, but everyone beat the charges. The crew ended up getting arrested one by one for other charges. The cops weren’t going to let it slide.

For the first several years the WRX was available in the US (before the STi was brought over) it was insured as a little two liter four door commuter car. It took years for insurance companies in there US, and the public, to realize what these were capable of. The WRX wasn’t the first “rally car” to be sold. But, it did blow up in a way most others didn’t. There sure wasn’t a lot of fuss over the GT Four Celica from Toyota a few years earlier (an all wheel drive little monster).
When the bugeye was released in the states there was some motoring shown that commented how close it looked to the dodge neon. "But it's going to take the cops a little while to realize.....this.......is the fast one!"
The English cop car in the outro CG being a Rover SD1 deserves special praise. The subbie might have been faster but I'd take the style and sound of the SD1 any day.
Aussie cops actually figured out that wrx front radiators were a ridiculously weak point after they field tested them to possibly use them as highway patrol chasers. Due to the big wide open front bumper grills for big airflow meant a little front end hit usually meant the radiator would crack, the engine would over heat within minutes and the chase was over.
You are so damn entertaining to listen to. "It was forged in the crucible of world rally" you describe everything with such clarity and artistry. Keep up the great work🎉

How long is a piece of string? Every ECU and car is different, though the basics are standardised. The ECU talks to the BCM and other modules across the car over the CAN network, it is the main computer that in simple terms coordinates what the other modules in the car are doing and when. If you print something on your computer, your computer sends a message saying 'print this data', just like your ECU sends a message saying 'pulse the injectors'

This just popped up on my feed. Subscribed! After almost three years of coveting a Rex. I got mine in December 1997. Shortly after was when all the ramraiding stuff was hitting the news in Perth. I didn't have a lock up garage, so there were a few stressful months. That car was my faithful daily for the next 24 years
My first car was a 93 1.8L wagon awd 5 speed. I didn't realize the potential they had until finding the rs25 forums while doing research about what car to buy. I read through a lot of the build threads there where people were building the normal impreza into what they call an RSTI. I slowly built mine to look like a version 1 STI clone but never had the money to actually swap it. Set it up for autocross and it did that surprisingly good. Got it with 93k miles and sold it due to it rusting out floorboards at 290k. I figured it would be used for parts but i just saw it driving through town yesterday.
How long ago did you sell it? If it's been awhile that's cool that you got to see it again still running. I'm currently preparing for one of those swaps myself. I bought a 95 1.8 coupe specifically to do the swap. I have a V8 EJ207 with the 6 speed DCCD to put into it. The plan is to participate in my local rallycross and eventually be able to do at least one ARA rally each year.

4:59 That’s sonic blue mica, my friend! My bro had a ‘97 WRX STi Type R in sonic blue. It was VERY fast between 100 and 160 kph, where you’d do most of your passing. We once followed the world rally guys around between stages, it was a blast. We got up to the end of the dial at 180 but I don’t know how fast we actually got to- the revs weren’t bouncing before the next bend. The Type R had closer to 300 Hp, and stuff like adjustable F/R torque, engine bay strut, intercooler, lighter weight and 2 doors. I particularly liked the bucket seats and the car felt super safe (in spite of the doors being very thin compared to modern cars) because of how stable and firm it was. To me, hard suspension is safe suspension. An amazing car. Also, the ram raiders loved WRXs because you could smash through the front of a shop and the car could take it and kept driving… like a proper rally car. It also was more than a match for the police Holdens or Fords if you were a decent driver.
We had a crew of young black fellas in Sydney called the WRX boys theys honk the horn out front of police stations to get chasers. The police ended up shooting some of the boys.

I bought a WRX in 2017 to see if Subarus were even worth a shit. It was a $27,000 base model. I bought this because I wasn't even sure if the STI was worth the money. At the time I believe they were around $40,000. One of my regrets in life is that I didn't just buy the STI. I live where it snows heavy occasionally. One day, just to see if the WRX was actually a rally car, I drove the car down a dirt road that runs parallel with the freeway. I had ws80 blizzaks on the car at the time, and it had recently snowed- so there was snow covering mud. This was a graded and Flat Road, but the traction was awful for any car. I sat in the dirt and waited for a car to pass me that was on the freeway. I dumped the clutch and let her rip, and I was seriously going 60 to 70 in mud and snow and passing cars on the freeway like they were standing still. It blew my mind.
Almost same here, I bought a brand new 2016 wrx base with the factory short throw shifter. After about $7k in performance mods, it was a beast! The FA20DIT is a much more reliable engine than the EJ, that’s why I chose a regular WRX instead of the STI. I had around 330 WHP.

There was no 3500cc class in Group A for the World Rally Championship. That class was only available for the Group A Touring cars. Wrold rally cars were all less than or equal to 1999cc with turbos plus restrictors. Furthermore, the car was not 30kg overweight, that was the safari spec with the heavier bashguards and spare wheels. FIA isn't allowed to disclose the weightbridge weights at any rally unless there is an underweight rule breached (to prevent teams or the public from calculating how heavy the driver and navigator are).

Prior to the Subie era, in the early to mid-80's in Sydney, there was a joyrider known as the "Porsche Kid". He only stole 911's and used them to bait cops into chases. I was passed by him one night driving near, I think, Five Dock. He went flying by. Twenty seconds later, a gazillion cop cars came past, tyres protesting, lights and sirens ablaze. Don't know if they ever caught him, but he was a thing for a short while back then.

Crazy the fast and the furious 1 vibes here, just with a wrx instead of a civic. I love it 🎉
I'd say more more like 2 Fast 2 Furious vibes.
Knew about the wrx's being used in australia, but the Evo 6 being used in a robbery was pretty surprising, since they were much rarer than subarus
Love that the Evo ran out of fuel - they combined remarkable thirst with a tiny fuel tank!

Man I hope they all learned their lessons. Life is short but you don't have to make it shorter or harder...
As someone who lives and breathes the GC/GM/GF Chassis. I can tell you they are amazing to drive and addictive, super easy to mod and if you are realistic with power goals they will treat you well. Thanks for this one.

And Howie did it?

Sweet ending
How long ago did you sell it? If it's been awhile that's cool that you got to see it again still running.
I'm currently preparing for one of those swaps myself. I bought a 95 1.8 coupe specifically to do the swap. I have a V8 EJ207 with the 6 speed DCCD to put into it. The plan is to participate in my local rallycross and eventually be able to do at least one ARA rally each year.

That introduction to the Impreza taking you from the couch to the cubicle really hurt. This was literally me. Miss that little car.
I used to have a 1995 Legacy sedan. Not as fast or as nimble as the higher end Impreza, but if you knew how to flick it through some corners you could still make a clean getaway.
(Only avoiding tickets, nothing sinister)
I'm not endorsing my past behavior, I'm only endorsing Subaru... I miss that car.
I know what you mean. One of the first Subarus that I drove that impressed me was a 97 Legacy sedan with a manual transmission when I worked at a dealership. I could always feel the AWD grip more in the manual models. My current 05 WRX manual grips like a beast.
@@evoman44 I absolutely love how their older cars look and feel, pre-2009 for the Impreza and pre-2005 for the Legacy.
What I really miss about my '95 was the ability to brake hard, downshift, flick it into a corner sideways with weight transfer and pin the gas. Not much power with the ej22, but still fun and fairly controllable with the slightly longer wheelbase compared to the Impreza.
I want to either get another one, or find a good 2005 Saabaru/WRX wagon in Saab skin.
I live in Sydney, Australia. I know someone who owned a WRX, this was about ten or so years ago now. He woke up to it being stolen one day, and shortly after, it was seen on the news being used as the getaway in a bank robbery. About a week or so later he found the car parked on a street near where he lived. He had to report it to the police and unfortunately didn't get it back, but it was an awesome car I still remember sitting in as a kid.
