Imagine your child is 17, about to be an adult, their whole life ahead of them.. and some creep rips them away from you for a moment of deviant satisfaction. That mother has been living without her baby since 2009 :( adjusting to that reality must be hell

My uncle just lost my cousin, it was to suicide though and he said it's very hard to adjust to life without her. It's like, you expect the person to walk through the door or come into the room and they don't. Every time I'm at their house I just look at her door expecting her to come out and make her silly jokes. My uncle is looking for a new house now because he just can't live in the house anymore

They were like 28 and I was 13, at first I just wanted to make friends my age online but then older guys started being interested in me and I took it as a compliment. As a 16 year old girl who also rarely gets noticed, I feel so terrible about what happened to her because I know if it was me I would've agreed to go too. I'd be so happy. I can't imagine how happy and excited she was to finally have someone notice her and want to be with her. As much as she may notice signs I'm sure she just couldn't wait to meet him. Only for it to be a lie and to lose your life. For just wanting to be a normal teen girl.

It's not that, rape accusations are tricky, you need physical evidence. You have to GO STRAIGHT to a GP/Hospital for a rape kit before the semen/damage has healed and been washed away. A lot of people shower and obviously keep silent from shame and all evidence is lost 😞 It's also tricky because of people '' crying wolf '' and ruining it for the innocent actually being raped.

I don't think that letting her spend the night other places very rarely is the way to go as long as you know the parents and the kids very well and know you can trust them. There's a fine line between sheltering your kids so much that they're unprepared for life and letting them be independent enough to potentially get hurt.

I’m sure there’s a middle way. Not letting your kid spend the night at a friends house if you know the parents well seems unreasonable.

Stories like this absolutely break my heart. They need to be teaching internet safety in schools. This man targeted so many young women and children, he found the most vulnerable people he could. Please please please be safe, don't friend strangers, when people contact you online trying to meet you, even if you've talked to them a bit, don't go. Please don't. Stay safe everyone. When I was about 12/13 and Facebook was super popular with young people, I accepted friend requests from everyone and anyone because it was seen as cool to have as many friends as possible on there, and I am still having to go through now and again and see "do I know this person?" and delete hundreds of people, deleting old messages where these strangers tried to contact me. Thankfully my parents checked my ipod every night when I was that young (cause I wasn't allowed a phone until I started after school sports lol) and talked to me about being careful with who I talk to, what I said, and what I posted. I now know that multiple men were trying to groom me, and it scares me so much for the young people on the internet today. Stay safe

theMaraudersrock that’s really great to hear!! I graduated two years ago and they never taught us anything about it (I’m from the US, idk if you are but that might explain it). I’m glad to hear at least in some places they’re starting to talk about it so young. Parents being vigilant about what their younger kids are doing online is so important too, you’re an awesome parent for being so invested while also allowing your daughter to explore and have fun online

I agree with absolutely everything you've said but remember this case took place in 2009 and internet safety wasn't really being taught as social media sites were still in their infancy. I remember being friends with people on bebo and other sites that I'd never met and who had like 3000 friends (now that would ring alarm bells, then it was sign of popularity) and I probably wouldn't have thought twice about meeting up with them. Now we know the consequences of social media it's important to teach internet safety.

However, one time I was doing volunteering and a gentleman started chatting with me. He asked me what was the thing I enjoyed the most about living at Durham and of course I talked about that feeling of safety. He looked at me so serious and told me to not be so naive about it and be more careful in the future, because it might seem like a peaceful place but you never know and that I shouldn't be too fearless. He ment well, I'm sure, but I felt a little uneasy about the realisation. After that I made sure to be more cautious.

Watching this, I realize I wasn't just catfished as a teen; I was preyed upon by an old/middle-aged man. Had my friends not tagged along to "watch a movie at his house", I could have met the same fate as this young lady. And the fact that we share the same name and similar facial features would have shaken me to the core had this not been 7 years ago.

So often victims are reduced to a name and an age while the killer gets a full celebrity profile. So thank you for presenting these victims as people. It helps drive home the horror of the crimes these people commit.

Even if you drop them off and pick them up from somewhere all it takes is them to walk around the corner or wait until you've left to go off with someone else.

You know, for people with low self-esteem, i think it's important that at least a few times when you run into them or see them, you go up to them and compliment something. From the color of their hair, to their eyes, smile, anything really. It can help a lot and boost someone's mood.
