    Chris makes it look so easy. There are other things to take into consideration, which he does here without explaining, such as corner entrance speed, what line you need to take to allow enough room for the slide, and turning back into the corner during the slide to induce more slide if needed, which is what he's doing in between 6:27 and 6:30, and again more drastically at 6:41.

    Hello Mister Harris,
    I follow you from Belgium since a long time...
    You are just the best pilot journalist I ever saw. Sorry for my mistakes in English.
    If you come a day in Belgium, don't hesitate to contact me. I will show you the Molignee Valley where stars of rally like Patrick Snijers, Marc Duez,... had their best days.
    Best regards

    While oversteer is not the fastest way around a paved track, it's important to have car control so you can save yourself from crashing if you get on the throttle too soon. On a dirt track or rally course it allows the driver to steer the car since the front wheels aren't gripping very good.

    Now once you got the three stages of the drift sorted out, the world is your oyster. You see, the possibilities are endless because you can induce a slide whenever you want to, you can control it, through steering and throttle, you can get away and come back into a straight line, whenever you want..

    there are many ways to initiate a drift. clutch kicking, using a handbrake, preloading the car. here the surface is wet and slick so it is easy to break traction with just turning in and throttling

    • @toxik217

      u can't do what he did with a 520d, unless there is snow

    • @bsodmike
      @bsodmike 10 років тому

      toxik217 thanks figured as much! Probably need a 3-400bhp beast (minimum) to pull off what he did.

    • @toxik217
      @toxik217 10 років тому +3

      nah the 3.0d is way more than enough but the thing we are missing is the LSD(limited slip differential). Each time we try to drift without a LSD only one of the wheels will be spinning like mad thus losing power and losing the slide. if u have e60 u can try in a parking lot when its empty you'll see what I mean :D. e39 520d is a bit short on power :( Have fun and stay safe (:

    • @bsodmike
      @bsodmike 10 років тому +1

      toxik217 ahh gotcha, that's the 'lock' he keeps mentioning. Is the LSD only on the M3/5's or does the 'M' package include it as well, I'm assuming the former?? Thanks, you too :D

    • @toxik217
      @toxik217 10 років тому

      sadly only M cars get a LSD. Not even the M135/M235 get a real one. This is strictly reserved for M3,4,5,6 :| Cheers :)

    I guess it's personal preference, I just find it easier to modulate when it's less sensitive and easier to counter when there is no added weight. For normal driving in the twisties or for a quick overtake sport is very good though.

    With all the JDM-wannabe 'dori' BS here, why has this *classic petrolhead instructional* (IMO) only got ~100k views? Deserves far more - not sure where the 6 thumbs down came from either.
    The Monkey has truly exquisite skill, watching mastery at this level whilst he calmly explains the process... I'll keep learning but that's a rare and fine talent. Bravo.

  • @balecbutler
    @balecbutler 12 років тому

    @raze203 At the start of the second drift, Chris applied throttle aggressively in order to get the rear tires to break traction. The differential may have momentarily locked due to the tires spinning at different rates combined with the sudden application of power. That would have caused the bang you heard.

    sometimes microphones or speakers pick up frequencies from the engine electronics, notice the pitch exactly follows the rpms. I can't explain how but I've seen this phenomenon elsewhere too, even in one of my cars.

    There is no superchargers on an M5.. but I did notice that whine is present even on the normal E39.. my cousin has a 528i and it whines as well, thought it was the torque converter but this is a manual and it still whines!

  • @avgvstvs96
    @avgvstvs96 11 років тому

    Its funny. I drift on Forza with a force feedback wheel and I've never drifted in real life. When I bought an E39 M5 (the car Chris Harris is driving) I drifted it and controlled it perfectly, getting out of the drift smoothly is the hard part though and thats what takes in car practice.

  • @vyrnmn
    @vyrnmn 11 років тому

    it does to a certain extent, although you still need to be fully aware of where the steering wheel is when you want to counter-steer. check this video /watch?v=5Tq2-yFU9_M from 4:30 you'll see he lets go of the wheel completely and it does spin on its own. It's possible to really forcefully steer into the turn then just let go and let the car start the counter-steer for you, but you will need to catch it on the way back or the car will just flick round in the other direction

    My mum had a heap of shit that ford called a cortina back in the 70s. The original AM radio when not tuned to any specific station would play a very loud whine that perfectly matched the RPM instead of your usual static. Some freaky interference going on somewhere in that thing.

    they use the handbrake to put the car into a slide once the car is sliding you can keep it that way by accelerating. at low speeds is not necesary if your car is powerful...in the other hand...handbrake will make it slide at any speed with or without power. The handbrake slide came out of rally just to put the car into slide mode at the required speed. He doesn't use the handbrake because the car is probably not his...since handbrake slide is harsh on the car components.
