The Mercedes C63 AMG Experiment - /CHRIS HARRIS ON CARS
Вставка

- Mercedes 480bhp C63 AMG coupe, with optional power upgrade, already has more than enough power to trouble its rear tyres. What happens when you remove some of that grip? Good things, that's what.

The most important here is the final conclusion - it is not how good and precise the car is on the track - it is how big is the smile it gives you when you go to the grocery store.
+benzfen HAHAHA best comment I have ever read!
Gary Gorton Tell us what kind of beast you are driving for that smile :)
C63 AMG Coupe :D
yes exactly, and you don´t need drive mad for make some drifts... now is more easy and fun
it's still illegal in most countries though, so you gotta be careful not to get caught doing it.
Dear Chris Harris. Thank you for answering one of my lifelong questions.... driving a high performance car on space savers. I can die now
Paul Lincoln Goodbye, Paul. You'll be missed.
Eightosaurus Spelunk he died after putting an m6 gran coupe on bicycle tires
Right!
I put space savers on my 944 in the snow, didn't get stuck
I'm back 1 year later for a rewatch and now so are you lot.
This video perfectly sums up why the Toyota GT86 and its Prius tyres are so much fun.
Toyota GT86 on space savers... Dear god, I think I'm onto something.
yeah its still underpowered, most drifts are clutch cick initiated or ebrake, it cant just power on and overwhelm the tires like you would want it too.
My cousin bought one, I bought a mustang and modified it, they are very different when it comes to drifts
ndinadis then your cousin doesn't know how to drift. The GT86 can easily maintain a drift all the way through a corner. But you have to floor it all the way and not start off slow in the corner. I tried it last year, a very nice car to drive. Obviously it doesn't have a lot of straight line speed, but who needs that on public roads anyway?
+ndinadis
you have got a point, the drifts in the mx5/brz aren't 'power-initiated'
it would be nice if they had slightly more power, at least 250bhp.
I drove his, it had headers and full exhaust, Im assuming intake and tuning, It prob made ok power but the lack of torque was disappointing for me in a "sports car" the stock prius tires I think made it easy to slide around.
and now use a koenigsegg with spacesafers
That would be flipping over, blowing, up death. If they basically give the Merc 1200 hp and it's that crazy, how crazy over 3000 would be

Small tires challenge
I guess this is why car testers always bang on about how much fun the Mazda MX5 is, even though it hasn't really got any power. You can drive it to its limits at legal road speeds. Even hot hatches these days have 255 section tyres and over 300bhp.... its all getting a bit silly and pointless if you ask me.
+soundseeker63 Unless you're Chris Harris who hates the Miata which makes this video rather amusing.
+soundseeker63 The lack of power can be easily remedied with a bolt on turbo kit. You can make up to about 275whp on an NA 1.6 with one safely on E85.

Great premise for an episode, thanks for giving us a FUN car video, Chris! Just would have loved better audio quality, but I'm sure you guys are onto that already...!
Cheeky car throttle comment
Lol
Chris Harris is a legend. He's definitely one of the best and most entertaining Automotive Journalists ever. I hope he gets the recognition he deserves. He captivates many thousands through his written reviews and videos. He shouldn't be struggling to afford a GT3RS 4.0, it should be pocket change for someone in their industry of his calibre.
Gonna love the C63 AMG. Just the engine and the sound makes it all worthwhile.
That's one of the reasons why GT86 is so fun stock- it is sold on the same tires as Prius.
TheLaXandro it isn't though.
Ben Fillman what isn't? It isn't fun? Or it didn't have Prius tires?
Jakob Kerr it isn't sold on Prius tires. Similar, sure. They say that I think because the wheels can fit on a Prius probably.
RandomUser M it's also lighter than both of those. It's not a boring car by any means.
TheLaXandro every one in the comment section has seen too gear.
3:33 - 3:49 How is a 125 tire 1/3 of the width of a 255 tire? It's obviously 1/2 (0.4902, if we're nitpicking). Your photographer Neal should've tried to finish his 5th grade, methinks...
+João Soares ITS *NEIL GODDAMMIT!!!!!
+Haseeb Chowdhury Both spellings are correct; I don't know who the man is, so I went with Neal. It's irrelevant... What's not irrelevant is Neal's lack of mathematical skills.
bruh chill I was kidding ya know?
do you not get sarcasm?
+João Soares To be fair, the section width is measured from widest part of the tire and unlike the standard 255 which has a flat sidewall, the 125 has a rounded side wall so the tread is actually narrower than 125mm. It probably is close to about 1/3 the amount of surface area of the stock tires even though his math was way off.
Everyone should learn to drive with big power on skinny rubber.
It would make them better drivers.
Kneedragon1962 having so much confidence is bad and will risk a accident by a fuck ton if i were you do someting about it cause its the most dangerous thing you can have if you dont have the skill to back it up. my cousin has the same problem he thinks hes the best driver he already had a accident
Kneedragon1962 Im pretty sure everyone can fly an aircraft with training.
That's not quite true. In principle, everyone could learn to walk a small tightrope with training, or sing a song (competently) in front of an audience. In practice, some people are just not cut out for that.
Fading Light Not really, flying an aircraft is very complicated
Quentin Freeman Complicated... Depends. Yes, there's some complexity in operating an aircraft, but there's some complexity in driving through London or New York or Sydney too. There's some complexity in operating a motorbike. I rode them for 40 years and I still have an R6 race bike. Complexity is part of the problem, time constraints is another, task management and prioritisation is another. Being able to ignore you instincts and trust your instruments, is a huge one. Being able to correctly read and interpret those instruments, under pressure, is another. Aircraft can be hard, but you have generally got a few moments to think. A car or motorbike near the limit of performance & control, it has to be reflex. It does everything too quickly for you to think about, it has to be like standing on one leg - you have to just KNOW what to do. There can be situations like that in aircraft too, but you don't often get into them.
I agree 100%. I had more fun sliding my old 77 Golf than a modern sports car. You can be slow and have a blast. We also did the 4 space saver trick when we were horsing around in the shop. Laughed so hard I was in tears. Let’s all go analog!
"On the street, fun is better than speed."... well time to go drift corners and do donuts in intersections
Hopefully, I won't be cutting you out of your vehicle when you wrap it around a tree.
If you want drift, with a bit tyres, you need speed and more power, with narrow tyres is just at less speed with less power.
So I should drift instead of going a bit too fast on public roads now? 6:43
Chris, you've really made me rekindle my love of driving. Thank you for your video's.
I can't believe I only just found this vid, it's instantly one of my favorites. I've spent most of my hooning life extolling the virtues of cheap skinny tires to friends. And it's been a very unpopular theory. But there is simply no better way to make a car "feel" like it has more power. And it's even safer because its way easier to gather things up at the lower speed where your tires let go. Really great tires still let go, just at much higher speeds.
Merv
same here, ended up mounting 145 section, very old snow tires on my friend's E30 to prove my point, and it worked greatly!

This was the video that got me hooked on every single video to come from Chris Harris. He is, hands down, one of the most pleasant and informative automobile reviewers to date.
c63 with donut = king of initial d.
The reason the GT86/BRZ is touted as such a fun car. The most fun car I ever had was a little peugeot 106 rallye. 1.3litre 8v engine with just over 100bhp and 175tyres, 900kg, no power steering, no safety features. Steering on the throttle, yes, drifting on four wheels, yup. 0-60 took a staggering 9.2 seconds, and you had to work the thing to go anywhere fast, the power band came in at 5000 up to the 7200rpm redline. But what a fun car.
Andrew Goodman FWD OR RWD?
the old adage, driving a slow car fast is more fun than driving a fast car slow
After first seeing this video years ago, I finally got around to trying it with my own track car - only an MR2, nothing with the power of the AMG, but still was a lot of fun and lots to learn! (on a private track, obviously) - Thank you, Chris, for this amazing idea of 4 space savers !
Ahh so nice to rewatch old episodes. Great reminder how to always watch chris with it in mind that driving is not about fast or the car its about having fun.
OMG, I always wanted to see this. Any high performance car on all spare tires.
Edward Rex I was just thinking the same thing the other day and finally looked it up. good choice
Edward Rex but I wanna see someone just completely wreck it
This video is a testament of how good of a driver Chris is. One example is how smoothly he was at making those steering adjustments. This guy is the only reason I watch Drive channel.
low grip drifting is a lot easier than high grip drifting, there is less snap and it's more progressive.
The C63 on stock 225 winter tyres is just the perfect recipe for everyday fun. You can go sideways nearly everywhere- dry, wet or snow. It needs a settled character to live with..
Thank you for sharing this and doing the experiment for us to see. I can see how efficiency could be increased with thinner tires if the roadway was straight, however on the corners it is a whole different story. Honestly it looks like a fun drive!!
Hilarious hearing them called "space savers". To me, a space saver is probably like a cabinet. Who else here calls them donuts?
"donuts" ?! never heard that before. we call them spare tyres.
yeah i call them donuts as well
StalePhish I call em pizza cutters
They are called space savers because they save space in the trunk

I just cannot stop smiling! Great idea, loads of fun to watch...this is something my little brother would think of, but only after he thrashed the first set of tires and still wanted to "get squirrelly" as he likes to put it...excellent.

his last sentence
Chris, is that the same jumper you had in the old Focus RS video from 2008?! :D
Am I the only one that noticed that they changed SO MANY variables? The wide tires, they left traction control and auto shifting on, with the donuts they turned off traction control and manually shifted.. Although it looks much cooler this way, it throws out the equality of comparison. I'd much rather see the comparison with the tires being the ONLY changed variable. That ruins this entire video for me, tbh.
Zack Rogers this clearly wasn't for comparison
Zack Rogers,I was wandering how good the nanny systems would hold it.
You're not the only one, but it doesn't take away much from the demonstration. Look elsewhere in UA-cam for standard C63's drifting around a track.
Just remember the show is for entertainment purposes only. They don't have to be scientific, they don't have to be thorough, they can lie about anything in the show. The only purpose of the show is for them to entertain you enough that you sit through an ad.
Thats cool and all. But why not both? Simply follow up the silliness with the facts and everyone is happy. I think they missed an oportunity to educate here.
"Fun is better than speed" - you hit the nail on the head there Chris!

Well done mate and good luck with Top Gear!!!
This is why the Toyota 86 is on Prius tyres.

Great vid! I always opted for the smallest stock wheels on my GT with the hardest tread for sideways fun everywhere!
I love Chris's enthusiasm. This experiment kind of supports my idea that the Toyota 86 is over tyred for the road.
What was the wear like on the 125 tyres? I've seen road tests that say the C63 can shred its full sized tyres in a few sideways track laps.

this is how much traction all mustangs come stock with
That's awesome...Only you Harris, only you. I would Love to have a track day with you for sure

I've done this on my Miata, using 10 year old space savers. Even with the Miata's anemic 135 HP, I was doing quarter throttle third gear drifting. It's a load of fun!
125 is about half of 255. Not 1/3.
yes but the contact patch is about 1/3
I'd say it's really really close to exact half as much
+Po Russki Depends, I had a pair of 245s as wide as my 275s. More of a reference than an exact measurement (In the US at least)
+rawr2400 No, it isn´t.
+Joao Soares Yes, it is 90cm^2 and 250cm^2 calculated roughly.

Hes such as legend for doing that, I love his videos you can tell he loves driving
That looks like so much fun!
have no power in your drift car? there you go space savers.
Really the conclusión in this video is 90% wrong, because the compund of the tires is very diferent between stock tire (continental sport contact 5) and the little skinny.
Try high performance semislick motorbike tire, and you will see results very near to the stock big tires.
Add the factor that the skinnys can be crystallized for long time without use.
Grip is 90% load + compund, theoretically 100%, but in extreme load the size can affect a little, but ONLY A LITTLE.
People who think: "more contact area = more grip" is usually wrong.
+1 contact area = +1 load = same grip, like i said only theorically, the proportion is like +1 load area = around +0,9 grip.
Anyway, very fun video!
Quite enjoy Chris Harris' reviews.. guy can drive too... I like how he hunches over slightly when he get's "on it" lol...
I would love to see the bloopers for this.... You had to have gone off the road at least a couple times on those.... lol
BEST CAR EVER C63 AMG.

no
hes a Great driver tho
Chris Harris, you just reminded me about how fun driving a car can be. :)
Load does increase traction to a certain point but after that it only takes away. The wings are used for higher speeds where tires start to lift off the road. The downforce is used to keep the vehicle planted on the ground and handle better more than have less wheel spin at the start. Wings will actually decrease a vehicle's top speed (due to drag) but increase stability at speed. Handling does rely on more factors than just tire grip, however, the weight affects every one of those factors.
That math is horribly wrong haha good video though
Is Chris Harris a driver or what!
Had to change a tire this morning. I wondered if anyone made a video of a high performance car driving on all space savers. Found this video. Joy.

On a flat road you can cruise at 50-60 mph, which also is top speed. It depends mostly of wind direction. We don't have very cold winters here in southern spain, but in summer the convertible top is a joy!
