This is not right, Jack White (Not the White Stripes singer) was the producer, the same guy who produced "When the rain begins to fall" sung by Pia Zadora and Jermaine Jackson
This song always takes me back to the best times of my life and my childhood. The video is in fact the long 12” version with all the recorded vocals. I cried so much when she passed away. What a beautiful voice. Please enjoy Laura Branigan - The lucky one.
"I live among the creatures of the night" ..... never could have imagined when this song came out, (I was 14) a decade later I worked for years in Amsterdam nightlife.... hearing the lyrics now ,again decades later, I can only smile..... did it done it 🖤🌠
Had a headache & ignored it,ended up being a brain aneurysm, her 75 year old mom came to Laura’s Long Island home to check on her & found her dead in aug 2004! I can only imagine what went through her mama’s mind
Her songs go way beyond just the music-she is a storyteller. Amazing range and raw emotion in her vocals. Arguably one of the greatest female rock/pop singers of all time.
I love that song... it has a night atmosphere, it sends you to a different world. You also should react to Circles in the sand by Belinda Carlisle...is very 80's type of music... you're gonna love it.
Laura Branigan has such an amazing voice. Very unique. It was so sad her career never really got the hype it deserved. Her version of The Power Of Love, How am I Supposed To Live Without You and The Winner Takes It All were incredible. I would love to see you do a reaction to her song Moonlight On Water. Amazing song and kick ass video!
Of course Self Control is one of her biggest hits and Gloria is her biggest hit and a lot of people will be telling you to check that one out. You can check that one out but you should take look to other gems from her such as Solitaire (her vocal performance is just otherworldly), The Lucky One (it's a catchy song with a fun video), Maybe Tonight (my personal #1 song from her), Spanish Eddie (you will love it because it's quite dancey) and her version of The Power of Love (her vocal performance is undescribably emotional).
I was 12 years and I was already thinking one of these days I'm gonna take someone self control. I was already in love with my future some one. This song is super fantastic. Absolutely awesome.
The video was directed by William Friedkin who also directed The Exorcist. Interestingly, in regards to your remarks, Warner Bros wanted Stanley Kubrick to direct The Exorcist but he turned it down.
Great reaction! I suggest you to continue listening to more of Laura Branigan. She has very powerful and distinctive sound. ''Gloria'' is her most popular song, but also songs and covers like ''The Power of Love'', ''Solitaire'' and ''Satisfaction'' are amazing, especially because of her vocal capability. Give it a try!
This song is so addictive! Ironically, I really came to love the song in June 1999 when I was 15. As an adult, it brings every bar and dance club alive whenever it is played. Produced by Jack White, the "Self Control" album and its 1985 follow up "Hold Me" both have the same style. "Hold Me", the song is similar to "Self Control."
You hit the nail on the head pal! The subject matter of this video is the same covered in a Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut. The woman in the video is in the entertainment industry and the man in the mask is her handler. She is basically used as a prostitute by her CIA Mk ultra handler to seduce rich and powerful men at night to gather black mail on them
Great reaction and i like how you analyzed the video and some of its meanings. Lara was one of the Biggest most loveable songs of the 80's Laura was gorgeously incredible never copying anyone but being herself,R.I.P she left us so early.
So glad you reviewed this, one of the greatest songs from that era. (All due respect to the original RAF version, but it's pretty limp compared to Laura's cover.) Interesting side note: The video was directed by William Friedkin (The Exorcist, The French Connection) and was one of the first music videos to be directed by a big-name filmmaker. Great live version (Laura's vocals are incredible) can be found at ua-cam.com/video/ojD1zKse2r0/v-deo.html
@LFDD FanGirl It was written by Italian artist Raffaele Riefoli (RAF) and released by him in 1984, but covered within months by Laura, and Laura's turned into a much bigger worldwide hit. The two versions were, however, in the charts simultaneously in several European countries, which is weird.
I don't think you can describe the 80s without listing her hit Gloria !!!! Classic 80s.... I think 1984 was a huge change in music. When you look back at 84 it was the start of Iconic performers.
My favorites from the beautiful Laura Branigan (another artist gone too soon) are Solitaire, Gloria, Sin Hablar (duet with Luis Miguel), and of course Self Control.
Hi Dereck. First, Thank you for reacting to LAURA BRANIGAN who is one of my sadly deceased favorite singers, with iconic songs like this one you have heard and another that you cannot stop reacting like GLORIA, THE POWER OF LOVE, FOREVER YOUNG or SPANISH EDDIE. Second, there is a duo that he did with the Mexican singer LUIS MIGUEL who is an idol in all Latin America called SIN HABLAR and I would also like you to react when you can please. Third, I think you are a very sensual man and I am falling in love platonically, haha and finally, fourth ... I recommend you to win more Spanish-speaking fans to put subtitles in Spanish. A hug and greeting from PARAGUAY
She was planning a comeback right before the died, of a brain aneurysm it was a shame, she was so beautiful and talented, I was a teen in the 80's and it had the best music ever.
It makes me happy, having discovered and come to love this kinda music myself, that my Mum had a Hits of 1984 cassette with this song on it, and would walk around her neighbourhood blasting this!
Oh how I wish you was around in the 80s you’d have loved it so much. The music was amazing. Still my favourite genre of music if a decade is a genre that is. Gets me feeling all nostalgic watching these videos with you 😍😁
This was directed by acclaimed film maker William Friedkin (The French Connection, The Exorcist, Live and die in LA, Crusing). The video was also only played late at night due to the sexual elements.
Onl just come across this song after watching rise of the footsoldier origins cant stop watching it sounds nice with a good pair of head phones got this on my play list she's stunning in it also R.I.P
A funny moment, this song `` Self Control '', 1984, begins, as in the 1990s, then continues, as in the late 1980s, as the rest sounds like pop music from the mid-1980s. 😃😃😃
You always surprise me how you even know these songs. I loved Laura Branigan. Her voice was so distinguishable....you knew it was her. Like everyone here has said, "Gloria" was her biggest hit, but her versions of "The Power of Love" and "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" really show off just how amazing her voice was. You should react to them.
I saw your video where you answer personal questions, so, when I saw you did a reaction video for “Self Control” I was very curious to hear what you’d say considering portions can be thematically interpreted as voyeuristic. I liked your observations. This is my favorite Laura song because of the production values the very electro synthpop sound. I think she has a better vocal performance in the song “Solitaire” which is a more pop oriented song but, absolute stunner vocally speaking. Check out “The Lucky One” and “Spanish Eddie” too. Great tracks and of course amazing vocals from Laura who sadly left us much too early 😔
Laura Branigan was amazing - had a string of hits, early 80s to early 90s. She had a "belt it out there" voice, but there was very little call for "belt it out there" songs in that time, or she would have been even bigger.
This is originally an Italian song by #RaffaeleRiefoli he sang it in English. It is typically example of the #ItaloDisco genere. Italo Disco ruled European charts in the 80s.
It was the most selling single in 1984 in Germany. R. I. P. Laura
Gloria was also an amazing song. RIP X
Produced by the great Harold Faltermeyer (the synth genius of 'Axel F' fame). Who was also German.
And both songs were covers of italian songs by the same title, Gloria by Umberto Tozzi and Self control by Raf.
1976 yıl laura branigan Gloria şarkılarla icon black Coobb telefonu. Yüzde
This is not right, Jack White (Not the White Stripes singer) was the producer, the same guy who produced "When the rain begins to fall" sung by Pia Zadora and Jermaine Jackson
My favorite singer and my favorite song EVER!!!!!!
ONE OF THE 80's GREATEST HITS! 👍🎼🎵🎶🎤
My all time favorite from Laura Branigan ❤️❤️
This song always takes me back to the best times of my life and my childhood. The video is in fact the long 12” version with all the recorded vocals. I cried so much when she passed away. What a beautiful voice. Please enjoy Laura Branigan - The lucky one.
This brings back memories. Laura was awesome and she had a 5 octave range!
Wow LAURA Branigan!!!!!!
this was directed by William Friedkin who directed THE EXORCIST listen to GLORIA her first #1 Hit!
"I live among the creatures of the night" ..... never could have imagined when this song came out, (I was 14) a decade later I worked for years in Amsterdam nightlife.... hearing the lyrics now ,again decades later, I can only smile..... did it done it 🖤🌠
Very cool. I was 10 when it came out. Well depending on the month I may have been 9.
This song shows how much potential she had in different types of music. Too bad her time was cut short.
You made a very good description of the meaning behind this song
THE BEST SONG OF ALL TIMES.....
I love that song... it has a night atmosphere, it sends you to a different world. You also should react to Circles in the sand by Belinda Carlisle...is very 80's type of music... you're gonna love it.
You should listen to the original! This is a cover from a song by Raf, same title.
Self control and also Gloria are covers of songs by Italian artists. "Self Control" is by Raf while "Gloria" is by Umberto Tozzi.
@Salty Granny Absolutely not
Laura Branigan has such an amazing voice. Very unique. It was so sad her career never really got the hype it deserved. Her version of The Power Of Love, How am I Supposed To Live Without You and The Winner Takes It All were incredible. I would love to see you do a reaction to her song Moonlight On Water. Amazing song and kick ass video!
& died of a brain aneurysm in 2004
What an incredible talent she was.
Timeless 80´s hit! You are missed Laura :(
Of course Self Control is one of her biggest hits and Gloria is her biggest hit and a lot of people will be telling you to check that one out.
This song never ages, i loved it as a kid and i still do, sadly Laura passed away in a very young age, she was very talented and beautiful, rip
Wow, loved!!! She was one of kind! Thank you, I have Stevie Nick's in mind, she have a lot great songs, but to me 80s song is "Stand Back" 🔥🔥🔥
Stevie Nicks, very good live
... 1985... Copenhagen...but Laura was my favorit
Midnight sky
Immortallity so much blessing for this woman her majestic voice & beauty is morethan enough ...
Such a beautiful voice. Such a brilliant song. R.I.P. Laura.
the original version was by RAF from Italy, Self Control by Laura Branigan was the hit of the year in 1984
One of the Best covers ever.
I'm very glad you mention that!
Good point about the reference to Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut". Also, the hot, masked male lead was giving me "Phantom of the Opera" vibes. 🙂
RIP yea, she was so talented, one of those unique voices
This is one of the coolest songs I've ever heard.
I love Laura Branigan songs. Wonderful 80's music. Music from my school years.
Love you reacted to this amazing song, most people would never have thought of this song.
The video was directed by William Friedkin who also directed The Exorcist. Interestingly, in regards to your remarks, Warner Bros wanted Stanley Kubrick to direct The Exorcist but he turned it down.

this is one of the voices that was taken from us way to soon. she was such an amazing talent. one of the other songs that she did was "Gloria"
It's a creepy, yet sensual and erotic video. It's very phantom of the opera style.
You hit the nail on the head pal! The subject matter of this video is the same covered in a Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut. The woman in the video is in the entertainment industry and the man in the mask is her handler. great video R.I.P. Laura Branigan .Great reaction Dereck cutey .
It was a big hit in Brazil too! We used to do The best on The dance floors in that era !!
My favorite Laura Branigan song. This song was originally sung by a man but she recorded this version. Excellent song.
I loveeeeee this song
She was a great performer beautiful voice. RIP
Great reaction and i like how you analyzed the video and some of its meanings.
Lara was one of the Biggest most loveable songs of the 80's Laura was gorgeously incredible never copying anyone but being herself,R.I.P she left us so early.
So nice to see people still enjoying her music. I recommend reactions to the Shakespeare's Sister's "Stay".
Shattered Glass & Spanish Eddie & Ti Amo R.I.P Laura Branigan
This son takes me back to the 80's.
Pure beauty
So glad you reviewed this, one of the greatest songs from that era. (All due respect to the original RAF version, but it's pretty limp compared to Laura's cover.)

In my opinion RAF's Version (the Original!) is so much better than Laura's one! Unfortunately RAF was not as successful as Laura with the song ...
This video was iconic and groundbreaking at the time ☺️
OH OH OH!! OH OH OH!!!!!!!!!!!
You said nothing about her voice, which was unique. I feel like there should have been more from her-amazing talent
She was so beautiful
90s kids be like Vice City on repeat !
Shattered Glass, Spanish Eddie. Give them a react. My 2 favourites of hers
The imagery in this video is spectacular! SELF-CONTROL was one of my fave '80s moments. And, damn, masks ...
She in my country (Chile 🇨🇱) is a musical godness ♥️🌹
I don't think you can describe the 80s without listing her hit Gloria !!!! Classic 80s.... I think 1984 was a huge change in music. When you look back at 84 it was the start of Iconic performers.
My favorites from the beautiful Laura Branigan (another artist gone too soon) are Solitaire, Gloria, Sin Hablar (duet with Luis Miguel), and of course Self Control.
OMG I love that you did this reaction. Laura Branigan was amazing and we lost her way too soon. This video is so awesome!
Thanks for reacting to Laura Branigan. I love her

Brain aneurysm
In retrospect, this feels so much like a "theme song" for the 80s. Just found your channel, enjoying your content a lot.
I love this song!
I was in love with this chick in the 80's!
La mejor cantante súper especial
She was planning a comeback right before the died, of a brain aneurysm it was a shame, she was so beautiful and talented, I was a teen in the 80's and it had the best music ever.
When you raise your hand ;)
Listen to RAF Self Control version - both came out at the same time to serve new wave and euro disco markers -
Man I remember half dancing half strutting to this xx
It makes me happy, having discovered and come to love this kinda music myself, that my Mum had a Hits of 1984 cassette with this song on it, and would walk around her neighbourhood blasting this!
Considering the director of The Exorcist directed this music video, I can see why this video used to scare the hell out of me when I was a kid, lol.
More great 1980s music....the best decade for music.
Love this classic 🕺
Hello Dereck ! Please react to Laura Branigan singing "Solitaire" ! ;)
Oh how I wish you was around in the 80s you’d have loved it so much. The music was amazing. Still my favourite genre of music if a decade is a genre that is. Gets me feeling all nostalgic watching these videos with you 😍😁
This version (12'' ?) sounds a bit different than the album version, and I expect the drums to start much earlier.
This was directed by acclaimed film maker William Friedkin (The French Connection, The Exorcist, Live and die in LA, Crusing). The video was also only played late at night due to the sexual elements.
Wow! I really like the song! 🎧🎶🎶🎶♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Thanks for the memories.
Onl just come across this song after watching rise of the footsoldier origins cant stop watching it sounds nice with a good pair of head phones got this on my play list she's stunning in it also

This song came out on Knight Ryder
Very nice video! × Thanks for sharing with us! You are amazing to keep her alive with this! Respect! ❤💔😍
timeless

thx for doing this song
Laura should have been more popular then she was LOVE her! RIP

a classic
R.I.P Laura Branigan
yasss ❤️❤️ Laura 4eve!!

Love your reaction to this song and the video 😄 - and I love the song so much.

This song is of RAF, cantante ITALIANO!
Love the song! Love the reaction! and you look so pretty😍
Good song. L.B. R.I.P. Greatly missed talent.
Mon premier flirt avec cette musique😊, c'était dans une boîte aux Baleares❤
Such an amazing song, and such an earworm. I will be singing this for days to come. Not nearly as beautifully as her, though. ;)
