This is a cover of an Italian song, originally from Raf, same title, Laura also covered Umberto Tozzi's "Gloria", Italy had a decent music scene in the 80s, better than now, IMO
I was only 9 when she died. I always had this song on the peripheral like many younger people will have thanks to GTA Vice City, but once I learned of her and her music properly a few years back I was genuinely sad to read she'd passed so long ago.
That reminds me of the 80s in NYC. Sneak out of the house in Brooklyn take the subway to Manhattan. You could end up in a hardcore punk club, new wave concert, crazy diner and real freak show in the subway heading back home before parents woke up. Thank God I survived.
Do you ever watch the nelson Sullivan videos? He captured some of those rare golden moments of 80s new York like nobody else. If you like underground super rare videos of your city it might be for you
Omg same!! Except I lived in Manhattan in Washington heights and we would take the subway downtown after sneaking out and go to the Limelight, Palladium, Webster hall, damn it was so different in the late 80s and early 90s, but I also think to myself, a lot, thank god I survived, now that I’m an adult I can see how dangerous and risky it was to sneak out at 14-17 years old and go clubbing and drinking on our own, and riding the subway at ungodly hours after sneaking out, our parents having no idea, it’s truly a miracle nothing bad ever happened to us.....
bella0418 Omg, YES!!! The Tunnel! I remember that too, that place was so dope af, it was an old train tunnel, omg u just brought back more memories 🥰🥰🥰
A lot of 80’s videos were weird because it was the start of MTV and visuals, wether cohesive or not, visuals were big. The more things, obscure, sci fi, the better.
"You Take My Self Control", and "You Belong to the City" by Glenn Frey, at least for me. Mind you I was at least all of 10, 11 around the time. I was very musically mature at the time.
So many '80s videos were freaky and weird, we didn't understand them either LOL. This is probably a metaphor for descending into her carnal desires or something, and of course there has to be a lot of interpretive dance and spandex lol
The 80's used a lot of inneuendo and subtly there was none of the direct coarseness and outright bawdyness the internet allows. In the USA the CRTC controls cable TV and Canada has its own versionm
I relate to this song. I'm a night person and happily lived alone in Fulham, London, in the eighties. At least four times in the week I'd be out late in clubs and bar lock-ins. I came alive at night and many times socialised with "not your-run-of-the-mill" people. Always managed to get to work in time after a few hours sleep. God I miss those days.
@@Ozzy_2014 It's the FCC in the USA and the CRTC in Canada. And the FCC only controls broadcast TV. Cable they didn't have much control over. It's just that the cable networks were careful not to allow things to go too far.
Laura was an AMAZING artist, may she Rest In Peace. Her (4-octave) voice was incredible! If you want to see where her voice truly shines, check out “Solitaire.” It’a a slow build to some incredible vocals. In fact, she holds one of the longest notes in pop history near the end of it. Gives me chills every time I hear it! ❤️❤️❤️ I also recommend “Shattered Glass,” “Ti Amo,” “The Lucky One,” and “The Power of Love,” yes, the Celine Dion song, originally sung by a Jennifer Rush, and then covered by Laura, and then Celine. Jennifer’s and Celine’s are beautiful but too polished, Laura’s is grittier with more emotion, and my favorite of the three because of it.
The original RAF version is pure Italo Disco from the 80s. You should explore that world a bit. My recommendations: I like Chopin (Gazebo) and Disco Band (Scotch)
@Salty Granny He's very kind, also because with the copyright he made many bucks (29 million copies worldwide). I suggest another beautiful song "Stella stai".
Oooh yeees 😍 one offffff thee greatest musical compilations in gaming history.. the OG vice city is pure orgasmic for its BGM... all the remasters lost a lot of the licenses sadly 😣 but man... VC vibes here all the damn way. 😍😍
Prince played on Stand Back. They were friends & she said she got stuck. Prince showed up at the studio, played his part & left never asking to be credited. He also played on Madonna's Like a Prayer. He also offered Stevie Purple Rain but she said it was too beautiful & she didn't think she could do it justice. * Stevie is the only female to be inducted into the Rock "n Roll Hall of Fame twice as an individual artist & with Fleetwood Mack.
The guy in the mask represents the "night" During the day she is fine. At night though she has no self control. She gives into the nights wishes of wherever you end up you end up. It's a metaphor for any fantasy you can come up with, can be found during the night. Sex, drugs, and rock and roll doesn't happen at 10am it happens at 10pm.
I see it slightly more specifically - she used to be a 9 to 5er but got into a friendship or relationship with someone who brought her deep into the world of night life and she’s wondering just how the hell she got there.
This music video was directed by the same guy that directed "The Exorcist"... reminds me of the Kubrick movie "Eyes Wide Shut" with the surreal night orgy
@@DeflatingAtheism Maybe there's more to the message we don't know. I highly doubt he made a movie out of a video but somehow it's a common topic for artsy directors.
I guess you are talking about William Friedkin, who also did The French Connection. I had heard they had been in a relationship. I always loved Laura, she was great but it seems she had an undertone of sadness in her personality. I think you can really sense it in this video.
Jay, this is my intro to you and your channel and, mate, I love you! Your reactions are gold. And, the fact that you've embraced Laura and a track that was one of my ultimates when I was a kid, is BANGIN'!

man the 80's set the bar so high for music it still hasn't been beaten.Weird great music videos and making mix tapes from the radio and trading with your friends and the M in mtv actually meant music, good memories indeed
This song so reminds me of the movie Flashdance. A couple of other songs you'll want to check out very similar to this is: Bonnie Tyler "Holding Out For A Hero" (see the movie Footloose), Katrina And The Waves "Walking On Sunshine", Samatha Fox "Touch Me", Face To Face "10-9-8", and Fire, Inc. "This Is What It Means To Be Young" -- the house band for the movie Streets Of Fire.
This song never gets old, I never get tired of listening to it! I was so young when I first watched this music video and was so scared of the masked man 😂 They made it like a horror movie
Nothing is better than watching someone try to make sense out of an 80s video 🤣 they are just like a 4 minute perfume commercial..sit back and just enjoy..they have nothing to do with anything 😅
Remember listening to this on my first Walkman over and over on 'the hits album' circa 83/84. She is stunning! So sad. I always thought the video was representing her sleepy fantasy rather than an actual night out...the 80's were cool and this was one of the best. Glad you played it to the finish! X

She is totally confused about whether she is in an abusive relationship or not. I like other Belinda Carlisle songs but "I Get Weak" is my absolute favorite song of hers.
Its such a powerful piece of music in its own right, and then Laura Branigan just adds so much to it. I can listen to it when I'm in any mood. It can be a song about an ex, or even just a cope song. Its the latter for me, the creatures of the night is other people lol.

Another great review Jay really enjoy your reviews! What a voice Laura had sadly missed, check out the original version of Self Control by Raf in 1984 it went to number 1 in Italy, Laura version was released later that year brilliant 80s track
I like her song Moonlight on Water and How Am I Supposed To Live Without You (she was the original release of this song penned by Michael Bolton which he later covered). She does a great cover version of The Power Of Love (also covered by Celine Dion)
