The way several bands of this era blended multiple genres of music together (synth, punk, pop, funk, disco, rock) was truly what drove me to becoming a audiophile and a fan of UK bands of the late 70’s and early 80’s.

Dude, I have no idea how old you are. But it's great to watch your reaction through the whole video. This song is absolutely incredible, even today. And remember, this was 1981. Music software like today was completely unknown back in the days. So, they had to increase and slow down the song's tempo and intensity ALL TOGETHER and manually. This is something that younger musician can't imagine at all.
I still love this dark timbre of the whole song and the cold and sparse instrumentation. As a kid, when I heard the song for the first time, I fell in love with it right from the start. And until today, there are not many songs that are from an equal quality.
Now, in times of streaming, such songs would never find their way into the ears of the listeners or consumers. Because this is a song that is produced in a way, so it can breathe and develop. This is impossible in times of Spotify and others. So, in the end this is a song for eternity.

Seeing as you were interested in a live version, check out Midge's/ Ultravox's performance at Live Aid. Better than the record, his voice is just astonishing, and reports say that was without much, if any, of a warmup beforehand. Bless your heart, I loved this reaction! I listen to literally all kinds of music (I once had my iPod on shuffle, and it went from Brahms's Lullaby to 'See Through Dreams' by Death, I nearly died 🤣), but the 80s was the peak decade for pop music, IMHO, there was SO much good stuff around x

Not bad for a 40 year old tune eh? Plenty of hits to check out from ultravox, reap the wild wind, all stood still, dancing with tears in my eyes and sleepwalk. Oh and worth checking OMD plenty of massive synth hits there and their still gigging. If you want to find john foxx his hit was a song called Underpass.

Your reactions slay me, I literally LOL when you get blown away, cos I know what's coming. The 80's ahh what a good time we had, oh yes we did. Yes Visage, Fade to Grey for synthpop.

Kraftwerk opened the gates of experimental electronic muisic for pop culture way back in the early 70's, with the Autobahn LP. Several sub genres of music emerged from there including industrial, ambient, new wave, techno, etc. Even rappers drinked from this source. Synthesised music was the natural way to follow, but I see it as an outcome, or just another tool available and not a genre itself. Electronic incursions from either "classical" authors (Stockhousen, Boulez...) and "rockers", were exclusively experimental before that. And they were not "commercial", at all! They were digging a new world to explore, namely Schulz, Rodelius, Amon Dull, Can, Kraftwerk, etc. Interinstingly, they are all germans, from the triangle Munich, Berlim and Dusseldorf, and were the progenitors of the so called krautrock. To better understand the ingenuity of these explorers, Kraftwerk, a duo from Dusseldorf, had to hire an electronic engineer because they got tired of broking (read explode) their stuff! At this time the mini moog made its appearance and, along the electro drums, the whole music industry changed for the best and worst.
Industrial music appeared in the pos- punk period (late 70s), with SPK and Klinic, and its apogee is in the 80s, like almost all other genre heirs of electronic pop music.

Once I saw someone describing the sound of Ultravox as 'sunday noir'; I think that's an apt despription.
Please give their song 'Hymn' a chance. The idea of signing a pact with the devil in exchange for power (the lyrical theme of that song) appealed very much to me as a young teenager. ;)

I JUST FELL IN LOVE WITH YOU & YOUR REACTION/ANALYSIS BEFORE WE EVEN HIT THE SOARING CHORUS🙏🏻💜 Subscribed! Yes this track & vid are epic early 80’s “new-ro(mantic)” synth pop deeply reflective & critical about society alongside punk’s aggressive form of rebellion. New ro is luscious and art pop💜

Back to new-ro (a sub genre of the late 70’s-mid80’s new wave) … I still enjoy the sleeper “The Chauffer” by Duran Duran … you will too🌈💗🌟✌🏻

One of the most beautyful songs ever written. By this time all of them had a trajectory and were gifted musicians , midge ure at his best, and multi instrumental man Billie currie genious here. It’s a beautyful dialogue between classic and electronic instruments. Curious fact…..The guy with the spider on his face is film director Julien temple and the real star at the shooting of the video was the spider, the same that appeared on Sean Connery James Bond film. There’s a very nice version live with Schiller and midge ure live. Even seeing midge ure singing only with a guitar without the genious instrumentation are really good too.
