  • The transmission had 100,000 miles on the OEM fluid. The MKX does get used for towing occasionally so the transmission fluid was past due on fluid change. The fluid used was Motorcraft Mercon LV transmission fluid.
The process was drain and refill. Refilling to the hatch marks on the transmission dip stick. Once filled drive around about a mile to mix the fluid and run through the gears and cycle the fluid through the torque converter. Then repeat.
Each drain should result in about 4 quarts more or less on each drain.
Recommend having at least 14-15 quarts on hand before you begin this process. Again measure at each drain and fill.
You can find Motorcraft Mercon LV at your ford dealer or other auto part stores.

Thanks for the video. According to my 2013 MKX owners manual, you should drive the vehicle for about 20 miles before checking the trans fluid level. Also warns that the fluid will expand when hot. Once you have driven it per above, it says you should first shift thru the gears with your foot on the brake and ebrake applied, then check the level.
Probably the best way to get as close as possible to the right fluid level after you drain off the old fluid, is to measure what was drained into the catch pan. Less danger of overfilling after each drain cycle.

I started changing the transmission fluid at 70,000 miles first time. I just do a drain and fill at 10k-15k. I don't do the 3X fill n change. My fluid is pretty red. I'm also doing the PTU every 10k-15k.
The Ford Edge transmission generally has a lag downshifting but is silky smooth.

Thanks for the video. My local dealer wanted $200 plus tax to do this, and I'm sure they would only drain and refill once. Didn't realize these vehicles had a drain plug, so will do this job myself and spend the extra time doing as you did....to get as much of the old fluid out as possible. I checked my MKX owners manual about checking the fluid level and it suggests driving the car first to warm it up (at least 10-15 miles) and then, park it, put E-brake on, put foot on brake pedal and go into each gear for at least 10 secs., then shut car off and check fluid level to get an accurate reading. I will definitely measure the amount of fluid coming out so I'll know how much to put back in as well....to alleviate some of the guessing.

Thanks for the vid guys, good work! This is how my 05 Honda Accord manual recommends it's fluid be changed. I don't have the manual in front of me now, but I think they suggested this same procedure like 3 or 4 times. I guess you know my 2012 EDGE manual suggests first fluid change at 150K Mi......But this makes more sense. So now I'm going to take a look at my fluid, at 74K Mi.

I saw another video where the hose was disconnected for the transmission out flow as it was pumping fluid out they were pouring fluid in until clean new fluid came out. I was thinking if using that method for my Lincoln MKS. Since I'm not a professional mechanic I think I'll use this method. A better way to make sure I don't damage the transmission and I can do it this way by myself without risking any damages to the transmission. Glad I saw this video. Thanks

Pour brand new fluid in a clear plastic cup and then the old next to it to compare colors of the fluid. You will get a better comparison that way.

That's what both of my ford escape do every 30,000. These transmissions seem to be really hard on their fluid. 6F35 and the 6F50s do it.

Mac, I thought the engine was supposed to be run for only 3 minutes between the fill & drain. The idea, as far as I know, is to allow the new oil to get in the transmission & the old oil to go out to the pan, then it would drain the old oil out. Doing it 3 times to ensure most of the oil out. But driving the car in between completely mixed the oil, so it's only diluting the old oil with new.

Never heard of the time limit. Either way the fluid will move through the valve body and the torque converter. No matter what you do or how you do it all you end up doing is diluting the fluid at each change. The best estimates mathematically I have run across is between 80-88 percent replacement no matter how you do it. Ultimately getting folks to change the fluid is the goal. Not waiting until 100K miles.

Was the engine running when you checked the fluid? According to the manual it is supposed to be.

Is it safe at that milage to change the fluid? I have 120K on my edge and unfortunately I have never changed the transmission fluid. I'm afraid if I change it now, the transmission will start to slip on me. Please tell me your opinion.

So in the description it says 4 quarts or less should come out but then in the video you said about five or so. So which should we expect per drain?

.....this is 100,000 mi fluid that is black as sin you can tell it has no emollient left in it and the damage has already been done to the transmission.... I recommend the procedure he's doing at 50K miles....

Ford specialists have said dark fluid is normal. Doesn't seem right to me either but I think this video is missing some information or making assumptions that the transmission is bad but it's not.

Why not just let transmission pump fluid out and add back until clean fluid starts coming out of cooler line, that’s what I did and it work’s good

Doing it 3 times is the best way. More expensive, but you get way more clean fluid in there. Drop the pan (and clean it), if there is one; and replace the filter. Then do 3 drain and fills.

Mercon LV is the issue with the dark color. It does necessarily mean the fluid is burnt or that the trans is hard on the fluid.
Do you not need to check the fluid hot idling in park?

Joseph Bentley ..... If it goes dark at 10000 miles it is rinsing filth out of the transmission that has built up.....

, the filter cannot be changed in no cars because they're internal you have to crack the transmission case open to do it
