- Had an issue of a soft brake pedal immediately following a hard braking incident. This is what I found out was causing the issue.

Thank You So Much!!!! You Saved me a lot of money on my Ford Edge!!
Awesome. Glad I could help!!
Thank you for your help, this just happened to me and scared the crap out of me. I am 400 miles from home too, going to try to drive very careful and get it home!! Your video sure helped!!
Awesome! Glad I could help! Hopefully you made it home ok!
This worked for me. Go in stone parking lot turn right going 25mph slamming on brakes. Activate abs and this worked. Hard brake pedal now.
Worked for how long
Trying it out tomorrow
@@sugapuss0714 It’s only a temporary fix and a cheap way to diagnose that it’s the ABS pump causing the problem. The ABS pump will need to be replaced ASAP.
Worked with my Lincoln MKX 2013. Thank you!
I have a 2011 MKZ Hybrid. I will try your suggestion with it. I hope it works. Thanks for the video!
Common issue with some Fords....You can test this with your scanner by running the ABS through cycles....Then as he says make turns left and right and slam on the brakes.
Just to add..If people what to know what causes this. Not opening the brake bleeder value. When you change brake pads. If you push them calipers back in. Forcing the fluid backwards. It will jam the ABS valve sometimes.
So open the bleed valve on the caliper.
I'm happy to have found this.......the problems described are identical to my happenings - the soft pedal always happens whilst turning right slowly as in entering a driveway or parking lot and sudden need to apply brakes because of approaching car, pothole, et al. The "fix" described here also corrects the problem albeit a pain in the tailbone to have to do it. I have searched to no end for a Service Bulletin - no luck. Dealer knows nothing of it so I'm passing this info onto my dealer. I did find Safety Recall 19S54 - Supplement #1 dated May 12, 2021 but it is for '06-'10 models but the same problem......but the issue is with the brake fluid.
I’m just now seeing comments on my video for some reason. Glad I could help. I dealt with the same thing. My mechanic friend couldn’t find a fix but I was determined. So with enough research I was finally able to piece together what was happening. Hope you were able to get yours fixed.
Thanks man. Saved me a couple hundred bucks and a couple hours.
Awesome. Glad I could help!
This worked for me also! Thank you soooo much! I got a break inspection for M*dis and they said every thing was fine but tried to sell me new break pads. You saved me so much $$!
Awesome! Glad my video helped!
If it continues to happen, flushing out all the old brake fluid might solve it. The ABS system and master cylinder starts sticking resulting in low pedal because old brake fluid over 5yrs has water and contamination. It's a pain and takes some time but not too many steps if gravity bled at all 4 wheels correctly and only cost about $10 for fluid and hoses. (Most shops and dealerships do not flush out the old brake fluid during a brake job).
Thanks
I’m gonna try this as I’m canceling my order for a new master cylinder. I’ve just tried so far is stainless steel brake hoses at the wheels thinking it was stiff it up. Dealer and third party shop tried bleeding, cleaning up the rear calipers, no changes.
Man! I don’t know if this is going to work but I don’t feel crazy anymore. I was swearing it happened when I turned right also. I did the power braking in reverse and it fixed it for months. It happened again last night as I pulled into a parking lot (again) turning right. I feel like I have a real starting point. Thanks for taking the time.
I've had the same problem and turning to the left with ABS fixes it all the time.
@@carterschuld7605 I gave up after awhile. I might try this left thing again.
You can use forscan to electronic bleed the brakes
If the problem is activating the ABS pump bleed, you can get a autel ap200 (im sure there are others that do the job) and you get advanced service options like ABS brake bleed.
Hope it helps someone.
My 12 edge had that issue
I took it on a dirt road hammered the brakes to activate abs and the pedal reset and is great now won’t hurt to try
Same issue great tip. Hello from
Cd. Juarez chihuahua
It happened to me thank you so much for information God bless
Glad I could help!
I have a 2012 Ford Edge with the same problem. It happens sporadically but it has happened on the highway and it’s really scary. The brake works only slightly by pushing the brake pedal all the way. However, I’ve been solving the problem by shutting off the car turn it back on and pushing the pedal all the way to the bottom and then it works again but only for a while.
Yeah it’s pretty nerve racking when you lose your ability to stop.
I have a 2012 Ford Edge SEL and overnight my pedal became spongy. I had to push it all the way down to brake!! Luckily my dad has been a mechanic for 40 years and he immediately flushed/bled the brake fluid under the hood and each tire from something that looked like a nipple. I DO NOT KNOW THE APPROPRIATE TERMS FOR ANY OF THIS!! Anyways brakes we're back to normal. Then they were on and off and I did minimal research and tried this. In a empty street I put it in reverse 25pmh and slammed on the brakes, the first time I was a little nervous so I had pressed the pedal slowly, then slammed on the brakes...that made a clunk noise. I continued to do it twice in reverse and one forward, each time slamming on the brakes. I put it in reverse 7 times, by the 5th time the pedal gave me some push back, it felt like when you press on a air ballon to pop it. The 6th time it gave me more of a push back then the pedal grabbed!!!!!!! I've been cautiously driving it for 2 days and the pedal is back to normal. No spongy brake, no having to push it all the way down and no money down the drain replacing the booster.
What's the dealership where you got the good price/?? DT4Z-2C215-A
I actually own a Ford edge and a Lincoln MKX. Guess what, they both have this issue. Local shop “bleed the brakes” and I have brake pedal again on both cars. Next time it does this, I’m going to order abs pumps or safely try to see which way left or right turns can make the abs pump unstick.
Curious wether or not they used a scan tool to activate the ABS pump when they bled them. Probably did and the stuck valve unstuck when they activated it to bleed them. And that explains why you have a good pedal now.
@@DannyC379 I didn’t ask if they used a scan tool. Only cost $20 per car. Scan tool usually equates “high dollar repair charges”. I have good breaks now on both vehicles. I am a very low mileage driver.
@@JohnBlakeJrNice. Well I hope that took care of your problem for good.
I just has to deal with this. Hot the brakes on a gravel road and the brakes want to the floor. This is the third time it happened. The second time it was my wife driving on ice. Not sure about the first time. I had the booster done the first time under warranty. The second time was out of warranty. This time they said matter cylinder. That was replaced but the pedal was still soft. So they went back in and did the ABS control module. He bled it 15 times with the computer and the pedal was still soft. They then replaced the booster again under warranty. They said it was good, but it's still pretty soft, not like before it broke. I wonder if after the booster repair, they didn't use the computer to bled the ABS again. I reckon I will not the gravel road again and try lock them up to get that good pedal feel again.
Changed my booster and master, no help. Came across this video, gonna attack my abs now !!!
I hope so too ! I tried the gravel road trick and no luck on that, so the pump might be shot. Thanks
@@benjamin5224 well? What was the verdict?
Well changed the abs pump and still had soft petal so I took it to the local mechanic to get the air bleed properly and it was good to go.
I WOULD BLEED BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE
I tried this it worked perfectly
My buddy has a 2000 Ford f250 4 WD super duty and I changed out his front passenger wheel hub. In the videos I was watching to do that one of them went into that vacuum system not into the hardware part of the hub. His was split between operating his four-wheel drive with the switch on the dash and with the heat and air actuator doors. They said that if you started having trouble with your four-wheel drive on that truck that you would possibly have your venting system inside the cab locking up the same kind of way. The 2012 Ford edge that I have has been locking up on the air conditioning and blowing hot air out on the driver side and air conditioned air out on the passenger side with both of the settings at low. And you can go through a little climate control and defroster button reboot. And I have been doing that so it's possible even more now to me that it is my pump because just all of a sudden yesterday I heard a little very pop my pedal went down. I've tried backing up and hitting my brakes and I don't know if I'm not doing it as hard as you guys are or not I've gotten into the ABS just for a second. I'll have to try the turning thing. But I do believe that it is that pump. Thanks for all the information.
@@DannyC379 it finally went far enough today that when I cranked it this afternoon it blew hot air in my face. I have done it both with the car running and with it not running but in the on position. I pushed the climate button in and hold it in while I also push in the defrost button then I let go of both of them and then I push the climate button again and you can hear stuff shifting in the background and then when it comes back on it's blowing as a defroster and you have to reset it like I have it blowing in my face and so I got my air conditioning back and I went to move my car and I had my brakes back
On that 2000 model F-250 that I was talking about they had left ABS off of the front so those two vacuum lines could be used to shift the automatic four-wheel drive and right out of the pump that vacuum hose went into a couple of splits one set went to the left and right front four-wheel drives and the other two went to the heat and air actuators. I don't know anything about this except for what I've seen on UA-cam but that one man that went into detail on that f250 little pump on that he took readings across everything he he pulled vacuums he disconnected the electrical connection he checked the two outside ones together he checked the inside one separate he made sure that everything was within tolerance of what it was supposed to be. He was following maybe a dealer's kind of checklist. Now that I figured out how to reset mine I may just let it go a couple times and see if I actually find that pattern and then I'll probably replace that vacuum pump
great point. how many MC jobs sold under false pretense.
A LOT would be my guess.
I just replaced my rear breaks 2010 mkz and while doing so break fluid started spewing out of the rear cylander everywhere but anyway they were a pain in ass to change cuz u have twist cylinders well I got them done and start car go too
Back out test them nope they squish all way to floor now keep in mind that my abs warning system was on goes on n off due to different size tired I'm stumped
@@DannyC379 I was alone at the time I was working on breaks , I did not top off thank u for suggestion, don't know why did not think that sometimes we forget the minor things as far as leaking from cylander it was my first time w these particular breaks and I unscrewed the caliper completely off that's when it then started spewing I quickly tightened up cylander and calibrated to fit pads...I will top off and let ya know results thanks again.

@@DannyC379 so I bleed the brakes and wala everything works great thanks for all the tips very appreciated
When you say braking while turning right I guess you mean a hard 90 degree right and slamming on the brakes? Anyways thanks for taking the time to put this video out....much appreciated!
@@DannyC379 There is a recall for the the 2009 mkz with a similar issue you are describing.
Thank you i wish i had seen your video before
My 2012 Ford Edge has the same problem. I took it to Ford a month ago and they still have it. First they thought it was the brake booster which they replaced under extended warranty. That didn't fix it so they replaced the master cylinder at our expense and it still didn't fix it. Now it is waiting for a brake control unit that is on national back order so it could be months until we get the pleasure of paying around $2500 for the convenience.
Thank god for this video
Right nw I have the same issue and I came to the same conclusion that the abs pump not working bc 3wheel is holding and the front driver wheel is not locking and I can read all control modules except the abs fuses good so I'm going to order that abs pump
Can a faulty ABS pump also cause the brakes to apply themselves without me touching the brake pedal? On the highway above 60mph never back roads my brakes will slowly apply without me touching the pedal and after about 10-20seconds they instantly release and everything goes back to normal.
Thank you brother!
I had the ABS pump replaced and I still have a soft brake problem on my Ford Edge... but I can see that there is leaking brake fluid I’ve had to add brake fluid twice in 4 days and I haven’t even driven that far... back to the dealership it is going cause it wasn’t leaking before they worked on it
Go and sort out the leaking brake fluid first, if not your peddal will still be soft.

Hey, I've been having a similar (but different) issue and researching mine. Did you ever check the seating on the vacuum sensor? It plugs in from the left, and may have a poor seal, which reseated when you applied the leftside force while making the u-turn and braking. Might not be, just a thought and I wondered if you had checked it already.
I did have all the vacuum lines checked. Because I noticed a hard break pedal when I started the car. But they all checked out ok.
Same problem dude appointment next week @ dealership. Jesus Christ $1000 parts n lbr wth I might trade it dude
I parked my edge at work on a hill turn wheels to right set parking/ebreak an since I had weak breaks I’ll try ur left turn break sir an will let u know thanks for info
Tryed both ways never seemed to fix it to broke to get new but it seems to been working somewhat better last month or so
I just replace the brake booster and it fix the problem.
My Problem:
No codes
When press on the brake pedal, brakes would engage and then release and I would press the brake to the floor to stop.
My wife 2011 Lincoln MKX was having this problem and the local dealer in Omaha charged us $800 and replaced the Booster. We took it back twice for the same issue and they couldn’t find nothing wrong. We took back last month(August}) for the same e issue and they said it was the Master Cylinder and it would be $600. So I took it took a friend shop who said it was the Master Cylinder and after trying 2 new MC said it was’t and put the old one back on. It turns Ed out to be the Hydraulic Line that cost $500. It’s fix now but I’m mad because the local dealer was guessing the whole time and if they had put on a Master Cylinder they still would have charge me for it. I didn’t even need a new Booster. Lincoln should have a recall, my vehicle is 9 years old with 79,000 miles.
which hydraulic line
The problem I'm having is mine will lose and get soft pebble but as soon as I turn the car of and open the door and start it back up I have hard breaks again its happened to me 3 time 2 times in the snow and once in the summer any idea on what it could be I have a 2012 mkx
Are you sure it’s not just a coincidence that you shut the engine off and start it back up? If not. I’m wanting to say it’s probably a brake booster losing vacuum.
@bowtibrwlr everytime it's happened iv shut the car off and opened the door and started it right back up and I have breaks again it has me baffled iv hooked it to see if any code are thrown and nothing iv been thinking about getting rid of the car since I have my daughter with me 90% of the time I'm just glade the few times it's happened I didn't have her with me becouse I can live with me getting hurt but not her
@@jamesstriplin2732. I don’t blame you. That’s very weird. The brake booster is the only thing that I can think of that might have any relation to the engine being shut off and started back.
Thanks
Just gave Ford $2600 for the exact same problem it’s my wife’s car I rented a car so she wouldn’t drive my raptor but Ford said this never happens that would be Downs Ford in toms River New Jersey I probably spent $1 million buying vehicles from there with my business
Be careful guys makes sure the master is a Ford part has this same issue found this vid after replacing the master spent 1000 on the abs nothing turns out after marketing masters for this truck is a no go took it to Ford got the Ford master cylinder put in boom fixed it so makes sure guys
A computer just to bleed the brakes? 😩
I was hopeful but turning to the left and hittin the brakes didn’t work for me
Mine Worked in reverse originally. Lasted a few months and now I have the same problem again. However walking through the same scenario as he did, I realized that it failed three times over the past year in a turning right situation.
Before y'all do anything, BLEED! BLEED ! BLEED your brakes! I changed master cylinder, brake booster and abs and still soft pedal.
Pumped a Gallon of brake fluid thru made it little better, got a shop to bleed them, hard normal pedal now.
Should've tried bleeding first 😒
Hey I seen your video and I thought it was very informative. I am a tech at a shop experiencing the same problem with a customer car and by process of elimination I have arrived at the abs control module. I am 100% going to try this in the morning before I put the part it the car I hope it works. The autel mx 808 will do abs bleeding on a lot of makes and models of cars but it will not reprogram modules and it’s about 400 bucks has many bi directional controls as well
Not always gonna work. I replaced the booster still had the issue. Bled the brakes and still have the issue. I’ve fixed tons of these cars with the booster problem but this is a new one for me.
I replaced the entire brake system and its still soft.
A computer just to bleed the brakes? 😩
