I had 5 empty oil bottles and poured the old transmission fluid in them to see how much drain out of the trans. Fordtech was on the money cause there was 4.5 quarts that was drained into the oil pan. Wow. I was just looking at this video to see how much fluid it actually held but I ended up with way more info than that! This was super informative, I learned a ton. Thanks so much!
Thanks to you, I changed the transmission fluid and PTU fluid today on my '17 Edge with 35K miles. Very glad I did it, since the trans fluid looked more like it had 100k miles on it, and the magnetic fill plug on the PTU had a significant amount of metal shavings and sludge, which I'm hoping is just break-in wear. You saved me hundreds of dollars today, and I'm sure thousands in the future... you are very correct that the fluid change intervals in the manuals are not nearly often enough. Thanks!!
I work on the line where these are built. The engineers say not to worry about the filter. It is large enough to catch all of the material inside that will wear down over the life of car. There is a magnet on it to pick up any metal debris as well.
Thank you, Daryl for building our Fantastic Fords! We are a big Ford family. Yes, I also have a 06' Pursuit. Thank you, FordTechMakuloco, for all the great wisdom and fixing our Ford's!
Tell your engineer friends to watch all the videos on this channel then we can sit around and discuss the horrible ideas of: non-serviceable internal filters, lifetime fluid in transmissions, lifetime fluid in PTUs, PTUs where the gear oil turns to tar, water pumps that when fail dump coolant into the engine oil, placing the damn alternator in Ford Escapes (2001 - 2012) between the firewall and rear of engine, have them use the first and second generation Escapes as studies on how not to do corrosion prevention. Then we can discuss some good ideas: external cam- driven water pumps, external transmission filters (we can dream), off-road selective gearing for the Bronco sport, PTUs with drain plugs, serious rust prevention for the rust belt.
I think I’ll pass. I’ve worked with aerospace engineers since I was an 18 year old aircraft mechanic and can never get a straight answer on service intervals. What they predict to be optimal is rarely even close. Reliability engineers? They’ll give you better recommendations after they’ve seen enough failures. Let’s hope yours isn’t the one that failed. The mechanic with years of experience who sees how things operate in real world conditions every day will most likely be your best resource.
Just changed the Mercon LV in my 2011 new to me edge. Thank you for this video and the tips on refill. The previous owner hadn't changed it and there was 103,000 miles on it. I will likely do a 3X flush and your guidance has helped. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this. I just did my first transmission drain and fill on my 2013 AWD Ford Flex. It has 76k miles and hadnt had a transmission change yet. I’ll make sure to be more proactive with it. Perfect directions. It’s a pain to get to that fill cap!
If it wasn't for FordTechMakuloco and his repair/service instruction and tips, I think half of Ford owners would trade their vehicle in for another brand. Wish I wrote down all the vehicle years and what to watch out for.
Hahaha yeah, I have a 3 valve 4.6 V8 in my 2008 Mustang GT, it's pretty much the same as the 5.4 engine in the trucks, and I diagnosed and replaced a bad vct solenoid, a bad roller follower, replaced a phaser, and retimed my engine twice (installing a new melling oil pump the second time) all thanks to this man. I'm pretty sure I used his videos for a few other things as well like when I changed my diff fluid and swapped the mini clutches for carbon ones. We are very lucky to have Brian as a source of information considering he is a ford technician and REALLY knows what he is talking about.
Good note about changing regularly. Especially with a non serviceable filter. Shame on Ford for not allowing self maintenance. Also good to see that the process isn’t as intimidating as it looks. Thanks again I will probably have to review this again in about another 17.5 K when I get 30K miles.
Interesting that GM and Ford both jointly cooperated and committed to investing finances in supporting this 6 speed transaxle, which also includes the 6F35.
Well, your statement explains the nonsense engineering with this trans! Take GM and Ford engineers and have them work together; you get a junk product with terrible engineering!! Where do they train these people to be automotive engineers...... Looney Tunes?
Mine was changed 10km ago. I was about to change it myself on the weekend but when I pulled the plug out it was still lovely and clear. I was shocked but happy😆
Thats one of the things that throws folks off about ATF: unless it over heats/gets contaiminated from mechanical damage, it wont change colors very much as it wears out. Folks are used to seeing engine oil that goes in golden and comes out black. Engine oil changes colors due to combustion containments which aren't present in a auto trans. If your trans fluid is anything different than a bright to dull cherry red, its indicative that the trans has suffered overheating or mechanical damage.
Thank You! I'm glad you explain how that fluid expands when it gets warm. I changed mine and before the 15 minute test drive I ended filling it up by accident halfway between min and full. I was worried after the test drive that when I checked it for final reading that it would be over max, but I got luck it was right at the max line so I am good with that.
But Ford, whats the life of the car?? "well little Johnny when the warranty runs out" when does the warranty run out? "at the end of the life of the vehicle little Johnny, then you must buy a new one" i think powertrain warranty was 75k? So thats it. Stop driving the car past 75k, its EOL
Im a firm believer in changing trans fluid before it gets dirty! I once worked at a cab industry in the mid 90s! We would change in 30k intervals, these ol school then can see over 300k with simple fluid changes!
Heh I was worried about the dip stick being dirty but you cleaned it off too. I love the attention to detail on your videos. I don't even have a car with this transmission but I watched the whole thing!
I enjoy the content this channel provides. I even watch the videos for cars I’ll probably never own....but I have one request. More Panther platform videos. It would be nice to see an actual Ford Tech working on something as old school as a Crown Victoria.
Just took my explorer to the shop. Wished I knew about this before, hope my problems aren’t related to the transmission....Or my problem caused transmission damage. Hope to find out this coming week. My "ahem" beloved Ford dealer in Buffalo, Minn. was gonna charge me $ 190.00 dollars for this!! 2014 Edge AWD, So i actually did 4 count em 4 drain and fills today!, 79,000 miles. Fluid, imo, did not look that good, quite brownish actually, ( wifes vehicle) so after a little research, on youtube, and FordTechM, i wanted as much of that old fluid as poss. out! I could only get out about 4 quarts each drain, maybe a bit more, anyway i am fairly certain i lengthened the life of this drive train. BTW, also did a complete coolant flush today also, thanks to your vids on that service, lots of running water, with heater on, revving motor, till clear water was flowing.....
Just like those late 90’s and early 00’s Honda’s. Lol the more things change the more then stay the same. Cool, just a drain and fill. Thanks for the tip about refilling the case. Slow and easy.
That helps! I've been struggling to get my fluid level correct on my 2013 Edge because I didn't know about the arrow trick and didn't realize that LV expands so much. I always overfill it and then have to suck some out. Thanks!!!
I just got done changing my tranny fluid by using your "tutorial" I screwed up twice but the third time was the charm. All I can say is tight spaces suck.
Want to keep your Fords over 100k do all fluid changes religiously including brake fluid, engine coolant, power steering, transmission, PTU and engine oil.
Was looking to change the fluid and filter on my 09 Taurus X and noticed no drain pan . Internal filter ? Another bright idea from Ford ! Great video , thanks ! Oh , and by the way , ford says you never need to change the fluid for the life of the vehicle . What's their life expectancy ? Not very long obviously . Update ; changed the fluid and WOW ! Way smoother shifts ! Eliminated erratic shifting . Hard to believe fresh fluid could make that much difference . Now on to the ptu !
"Lifetime" no matter how defined, always is a definite length of time. Ive never seen any official documentation stating what the auto manufacturers consider as life time, but based on the length of warranties and and the average life span of the vehicles when in real use, it seems to be 100k-150k for a sedan and 175k-250k for a suv or pickup. Roughly 5-10 years for both. Its also worth noting that while the trans fluid in a 6f50 isn't a part of regular maintenance in the standard service list, it is listed in the severe duty service list.
Love the DIY videos! Am I the only person to notice that he Clearly says 4 1/2 quarts THREE times at the beginning of the video and then changes it to 5 1/2 to 5 3/4 when he's topping off with fluid???
The 4.5 is the base line. Topping up as you go through the procedure. Better not to overfill from the start and add until you get to the mid hash mark.
Same here right about 4.9ish qts, pretty much 5 is fine. Also checked mine while the engine was running too. I’ve seen countless videos where they check it with engine off. Not sure how much that affects the level reading though.
I agree that non-serviceable filters are kind of dumb, but they're not as bad as everyone here is making them out to be. Considering most people never service their transmissions at all and they commonly go over 150k miles before having problems, it's not inconceivable one with a non-serviceable filter can go over 250k just with some fluid changes. My 1992 Honda Accord also has a non-serviceable filter (yeah, before you bash Ford for this, they're not the first ones to do this). I have 208k miles and never had a transmission problem. Never had to change the filter; I just change the fluid every 30k or so.
While I do agree it's really not that necessary to change the fluid or filter in the grand scheme of things, I'd still at least like to have the option of doing it. Ford is making this choice as a cost saving measure for themselves rather than the user.
136K on my 2013 Taurus Limited, dependable vehicle. Wish Brian would do more videos, but understand since he is so busy at the garage. I may upgrade to a 2018 off lease Taurus, but considering a 2015-2016 MKS
Nice. I have a 2008 Taurus with almost 190,000 miles. Only thing I've had to replace is the water pump-which is a hell of a job (10+ hours to do) so just keep an eye on your water pump for leaks. Otherwise the 3.5L is a great engine.
Haynes manual says 106 in-lbs for the drain plug in the 6f50/55. Though to your point, a little thread sealant and remembering you're just plugging a hole are always important.
@@FordTechMakuloco Although it should be intuitive, your tip about choking up on that 3/8” ratchet during plug installation you provided in a few other videos is great advice for weekend warriors or novices just staring out. Your videos have saved me countless hours of troubleshooting, money for “parts cannon” ammo, labor costs and tons of frustration. You are a tremendous asset to the Blue Oval Brigade! Thanks!
Fordtechmakuloco do you screw in the dip stick fully or just drop it in when reading? There would be a difference because screwing it in fully changes the reading a few mm's.

@@jonclark1288 good point. Maybe make the adapter and filters reverse threaded. Then those of us who are smart can get an adapter to the adapter that is forward threaded and use regular oil filters. Or not take the car to jiffy lube. No way in hell they'd ever touch even my old cars. Last time anyone changed my oil was 1990 at the pennzoil place. Watched the long haired dope head and figured sh** I can do this. Now I've done everything except mount tires on rims.
Great question. Why not have an external transmission filter? I assumed that it was a clearance issue back when most vehicles were rear wheel drive. However, with the change to front wheel drive, why not locate a transmission filter like the oil filter?
QUESTION please: Ford Explorer platinum 2017 single owner 35K miles .. do you change PTU fluid as well !? is it still recommended to perform this service at 30 K if vehicle was bought brand new !!? can not get a straight answer from the dealer ... thanks !
Hello. Thank you for your help. You’re an asset to the ford community! I have a second gen CX-9, 2019 to be exact, and the torque converter locks up almost instantly (I think over 7 mph). It’s great for that direct feel, less heat build up and better gas mileage. Do you happen to know when the 6F55 torque converter locks up?
Great Videos! I have the '15 Sport with the 2.7 and it's a bit different. You have to remove the two screws retaining air intake, pull the air box up from the retainers and twist slightly. The flex intake hoses stay attached. Then you can check fluid when running. It's Really tight, cap almost impossible to see let alone twist and have to pull it between hoses. Smaller hands a plus. I managed with two fused wrists so it can be done. Just adding fluid? Remove the whole airbox, but Ford says don't run with it disconnected.
I have 2015 Ford Edge SEL 2.0 Eco boast Front wheel drive that doesn’t have a dip stick. Has a funny plastic cap that appears to be some type of a guage. Is this normal?
I just did a drain and fill on my wifes 2015 Edge. My brother has a 2011 Explorer but only puts a iut 8,000 miles on it a year. Should he drain and fill the transmission fluid more frequently than every 30k miles?
We just bought a used explorer. We have a transmission leak. I can’t tell where it’s coming from. Are these known to have leak issues? And where are the potential leak points? Thanks
I’m working on a 2012 explorer 2,0 eco. With 2wd. Doing transmission drain and fill. This transmission doesn’t have a dipstick. It has a plug. Been trying to get info to fill transmission on how many qts of Lv. Thanks. All videos are with a dipstick.
Had mine in a 2008 taurus with approx. 112K changed when the input and output sensors were causing issues. Started shifting poorly recently and was cause by low fluid due to cooler leak. Cooler is attached to AC condenser so abandoned it and put in aftermarket tranny cooler. Shifting well now. Might do this sometime in the next couple of years. What do you think of Jiff Lunes reverse flow change? Supposed to help get junk out of filter, but makes me wonder where the just goes! Seem like that might be a bad idea.
I know some of the older vehicles when changing the trans oil you have to unbolt the trans oil pan and replace the filter in there. So I have a 2019 ford explorer, is that not the case anymore?
Great video! I have a 2014 Ford Flex with 120,000 miles, never had the tranny fluid changed. A really exceptional vehicle, always driven easy, but does drive on dusty roads occasionally. Is it "safe" to change fluid in this case? Is it true that you can cause slipping problems if you change fluid after waiting too long? Many thanks . . .
I decided to pop back in after a year since my full trans fluid change. (3x 5.5gts). It's only been 3500 miles since that full flush but I'm opting to do the 5qt change at every oil change just to keep things fresh. Plus I'm under there anyways right next to the trans, so why not? Overkill? Nah, cheaper than rebuilding the trans! 🍻
@C J you never get all the fluid out. There is alot left in the torque converter and some that stays in passage ways where gravity won't let it drain out of the system. To get the best results you can do 3 of the 5qt changes. Do a change and fill and drive around for a little bit. Then do another 2 more the same way. This flushes most of the fluid out and replaces it with new fresh fluid.

Yup its a large capacity filter for sure ands a magnetic strip but they said the CD4E filters were more than enough too.
LMAO! HaHaHa! Love "over the life of the car"!!!! I wonder how many miles/years constitute the life of the car?
Just changed the Mercon LV in my 2011 new to me edge. Thank you for this video and the tips on refill. The previous owner hadn't changed it and there was 103,000 miles on it. I will likely do a 3X flush and your guidance has helped. Thanks!
How does the vehicle feel after having changed it? I have a 2011 106,000 miles
The best video I've watched yet, very detailed and nothing unnecessary
Not a Ford guy but I really like this channel
Does good work and is a good teacher, explains things concisely. Morons like myself tend to lose our train of thought easy. Lol
@@SangheiliSpecOp Hear, hear!
This is an absolute fact
Haha glad I read this comment before buying a ford…
Absolutely!!!
This was a very informative video on how to check, change & add fluid to the ford edge! Thank you for a very well done video!
Another awesome video!!
With that I’m doing the wife’s 2016 transmission service today!!
Thank you!!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. You have saved my wife and I thousands in repairs!
I thought the gm/ford joint transmission was the 10speed not the 6 speed.??
@@tomh6779I think GM backed out of the ten speed collaboration. The six speed is a joint development.
Well, your statement explains the nonsense engineering with this trans! Take GM and Ford engineers and have them work together; you get a junk product with terrible engineering!! Where do they train these people to be automotive engineers...... Looney Tunes?
That explains why these transmissions are fucking trash.
Thank you Brian. Good job. Have a blessed and safe week.
My 09 Taurus had this, just as easy as a regular oil change and with some ATP full synthetic atf it kept the car shifting nice n smooth.
I wonder if this guys really understand how much help he is to us ford owners...
This guys is just one heck of a mechanic! Wish he was available in Houston
I didn’t change my transmission oil for 70k but when I did it helped out a lot I will start doing it sooner
nah man that oil is good for the life of the car
(transmission fails ending the cars life)
But Ford, whats the life of the car??
Love your videos brother. Being a “Ford guy” really makes a difference, knowledge and professionalism, damn rare these days. I thank you.
Kenny, how did you make out? What were your symptoms and what was the outcome if you don't mind sharing? Thanks
@@mygt8a4re eventually it just locked up wouldn’t roll forward or reverse. Not knowing anything about fwd or awd vehicles I took it to the shop and wound up replacing the transmission. Been good ever since. Hope that helps. Explorer had about 147k miles.
@Kenny Dixson Sorry to hear you needed to replace the trans, glad you got it fixed and having great success with it now! For me I'm just learning a much as I can so I can maintain my edge the best possible. Thanks for your input!
Best how to I have seen for these transmissions. I going to have to buy a shirt just to say thanks.
TNX for taking the time to create this video sir!
I have a 2013 Ford Taurus Police Interceptor. 3.5l N/A and 6F50 transmission has been solid. 230k miles. Definitely will last to 200k
Did this for my 2013 lincoln mks ecoboost 3.5l TT. I appreciate the walk through, quick and simple!
As always thanks for the comprehensive video.
I just watched this video and changed the trans oil on my Lincoln MKS ecoboost. Will change it every 40k miles from now on.
Great tips as always thanks Brian!
Want to keep your Fords over 100k do all fluid changes religiously including brake fluid, engine coolant, power steering, transmission, PTU and engine oil.
Great advice
2007 ford edge 158,000
2010 ford edge 164,000
Change fluids they will last
most vehicles, if not all, with the 6F50/55 use ford EPAS steering, which is electric and not hydraulic fluid driven
I totally agree with changing the ATF earlier than recommended intervals. Great video. Keep up the great work
As always great video. I don't own these car but still watch it.
Thanks. Info on the internal oil filter seems to be the same on my 8F35. It has 2 internal filters.
Took me 5 quarts to get just about right under half way mark .
Same here right about 4.9ish qts, pretty much 5 is fine. Also checked mine while the engine was running too. I’ve seen countless videos where they check it with engine off. Not sure how much that affects the level reading though.
Looking for more F150 videos. Just took delivery on my new F150 4x4 Supercrew. Loving it. And that new smell is better than viagra.
Easier procedure than I thought. Thanks for the video.
Correct the filters are great long life filters just don't neglect the fluid.
I just did mine at 100,000 km (60m) and it was right near the end of life-do it guys watch the vid
Haynes manual says 106 in-lbs for the drain plug in the 6f50/55. Though to your point, a little thread sealant and remembering you're just plugging a hole are always important.
Yes but I never torque it that much.
@@FordTechMakuloco Although it should be intuitive, your tip about choking up on that 3/8” ratchet during plug installation you provided in a few other videos is great advice for weekend warriors or novices just staring out. I’m an aircraft mechanic by trade so I understand auto mechanics and necessary theory of operation. What I don’t have is your in depth Ford experience and system knowledge. Your videos have saved me countless hours of troubleshooting, money for “parts cannon” ammo, labor costs and tons of frustration. You are a tremendous asset to the Blue Oval Brigade! Thanks!
You are a life saver! Thank you for this video! Is there a ATF filter in these Explorers too that require a replacement?
Fordtechmakuloco do you screw in the dip stick fully or just drop it in when reading? There would be a difference because screwing it in fully changes the reading a few mm's.
Thanks for the example! Just completed this procedure on my 2014 flex
I have a 2019 ford explorer the transmission looks like the one you are working on I have already did the trans oil change and I get PO867 code but I’m not sure where the transmission fluid pressure sensor is located
Sure would be nice if they all just used a spin on oil filter as a trans filter. But that would be too easy.
A lot of incompetent Jiffy Lube techs would mistake it for the engine oil filter.
@Game Bred Duramax Allisons have spin on filters? Wouldn't that be nice.
My Saturn was that way trans filter and oil filter looked almost identical
Great question. Why not have an external transmission filter? I assumed that it was a clearance issue back when most vehicles were rear wheel drive. However, with the change to front wheel drive, why not locate a transmission filter like the oil filter?
Can you make a video for the 10R80
Are you draining and filling 2 or 3 times every time? Or just one drain and fill every 30k?
Excellent info. I need to do this with my '17 Edge with 42K.
The video is good and I benefited a lot from it. I have a 2018 Ford Explorer. I would like to know how to change the gearbox filter
Can you also drain the fluid out of the line and pressure tap/second drain plug, or should you not do that? Thank you.
2014 Explorer Owners Manual states 150,000 miles. I've never heard of such a thing. I have historically used 60,000. Thanks
Do you have plans to release how to change the ptu fluid and to remove the ptu?
I have 2015 Ford Edge SEL 2.0 Eco boast Front wheel drive that doesn’t have a dip stick. Has a funny plastic cap that appears to be some type of a guage. Is this normal?
Mine is the same in the 2015 Ford Edge Titanium AWD, Did you find anything out?
Many thanks . . .
I have 250xxx, I never change the fluid but the transmission runs smoothly should I change it?
what size / thread is that drain bolt ? i would like to replace it with a magnetic gold plug, thank you in advance
What is your opinion of adding Seafoam Trans Tune at each change and running with it full time with the additive?
I decided to pop back in after a year since my full trans fluid change. (3x 5.5gts). It's only been 3500 miles since that full flush but I'm opting to do the 5qt change at every oil change just to keep things fresh. Plus I'm under there anyways right next to the trans, so why not? Overkill? Nah, cheaper than rebuilding the trans! 🍻
Hoping to get an answer here hopefully you can help.... the book says it takes 11.6 why is only taking 5.5?
@C J you never get all the fluid out. There is alot left in the torque converter and some that stays in passage ways where gravity won't let it drain out of the system. To get the best results you can do 3 of the 5qt changes. Do a change and fill and drive around for a little bit. Then do another 2 more the same way. This flushes most of the fluid out and replaces it with new fresh fluid.
@@mygt8a4re Hey thanks for replying, really appreciate the help! Was ready to drain it and send 11.5 quarts in it lol ahh man I'm glad I procrastinated, watched another video and asked.
Im having issues with the 2016 exploder 4cyl ecoboost transmission. It tends to bang into reverse once you've only throttled up like its not getting pressure thru the solenoid. Ive had the reverse solinoids replaced twice. First time under warranty. Second time it never helped. I replaced the whole valve body and solinoids, and there was no change in the reverse bang. I've changed the fluid twice, with lucas aditive no change. I believe there is a glitch in adaptive learning. I've had it reset and still issues! It angers me after 100 years of design that computers are destroying transmissions when mechanical transmissions worked fine. Aaaaaaaaaah! Help!
Is it okay not to use a thread sealant at all? Would be changing my 09 Escape transmission fluid tomorrow and unfortunately have no thread sealant on hand 😅
I have ford taurus sho 2014, just wanted to change oil with filter, flush and clean pan...but looks like I can change fluid only, the rest must be serviced in dealership..
Do one on the 10 Speed transmission please.
I have done a few and they are a nightmare plus way too many changes depending on your model year and powertrain. I hope to never service one again....
He is back 😁
I just bought a 14 explorer sport, to my knowledge the fluid has never been changed with 140k miles, would you recommend a drain and fill or is that a bad idea?
How you supposed to check that many times and starting and driving with the ones with the air box in the way?
Are the transmission filters non serviceable on the current, such as 2021 ST Explorers?
I have 2013 with shudder under lite accel. Put new plugs and coils, new Motorcraft filter, and fuel system check by dealer. Still shudders slightly. Saw video suggesting a trans additive... thoughts?
Love the videos, have used them many times to learn or have confidence and best practices. Great variety of content and easy to watch and learn. Any chance we see a 10speed f150 transmission fluid and filter change? Thanks for your channel
very soon
The stealership wanted 279 bucks for a compass atf change so I did it myself for 34 with 2 jugs of maxlife at China mart ....your transmission can last a long time with 40k fluid changes
Hardest part is figuring how to slowly and comfortably pour from a 5 gal jug. After the 3rd drain fill I didn't spill it everywhere.
Too funny. Know what you mean.
I have a 2011 Ford Taurus Sel 3.5l FWD. Should I do the same procedure with my vehicle? Even though it calls for a total fill of 10.9 quarts. Any other information or recommendations for me would be great.
