Nice video. Very to the point without wasting time. My scan tool has two transmission temperatures indicated, but one is several degrees higher. I assume they're different measuring points. Which one should be used?
One will be torque converter and one will be pan temp. You want the pan temp. Easy way to figure this out is usually the torque temp will start off higher and pan temp goes up after. If you put the vehicle into drive and press the brake pedal hard while lightly engaging the accelerator the torque temp will spike and then drop. This will also help you identify which is the torque reading
@@T4Rgarage Perfect. Thank you for taking the time to reply!
Just put in what you drain out. Call it done. Did that every 35K miles on my 2010 4Runner. Sold it last year with 275,000 miles on it. Still ran and shifted perfectly.
you sold a 4runner?
yes and bought a 2016 TRD Pro 4Runner in its place. Only toyota in this family@@blackpepe
This is a shortcut method that carries some risk, but worth noting that it’s not the “proper” way. If you’re gonna do it this way, make sure to normalize the fluid temps in your transmission with the new quarts of trans fluid by keeping them together overnight in the garage. That way you account for temperature variance which causes expansion/contraction of the fluid. But, it’s really not difficult to do it properly, either with a scan tool or by jumping the proper pins in the OBD2 port and using the neutral-drive, neutral-drive shifting technique covered in other videos.
it works perfectly fine. @@richardjones647

no one ever had the patience to teach me any of this stuff so i just want to say you are the man. thank you for being so clear, concise and straight to the point. your videos are a blessing!!
As a 40 year Tech I want to congratulate you on a great video extremely thorough and precise.
I watched a fair few car videos and none of them beat the quality and detail you go through. I really appreciate your video. Thanks for teaching me how to do this.
Man if every common car had tutorials like this. Breakdown of all the parts and tools and how you breakdown the maintenance is amazing man. You're helping me give my 245k mi 5th Gen new life!!!!
Happy to hear that, cheers!
If you never changed your trans fluid, you’ll do more damage than good if you do it at that high mileage.
As a new-ish 4Runner owner and someone who wants to take care of their car and didn’t know much before. Your channel has help so much. Your camera angles, descriptions and the way your edit is amazing! Thank you.
Dude, the funnel with the hose! 👍👍👍
This really is the best T4R channel on UA-cam. Thank you for the great content!
That means a lot, thanks so much!
I'm about to replace the front/rear diff and transfer case fluids along with lubing the propeller shaft on my 2020 4runner thanks to this channel. I'm even considering the trans... my local dealer just told me there's no filter (red flag) and quoted $280 for a flush. Thank you!!!
That was simple explanation and a very satisfied 😊
Great video, saved me tons of time!
A few tips for a stock Limited:
1. Find your 10mm socket(the one always missing).
2. On my 2017 Limited 4wd(no lift), the clearance is too low
without jack stands or a lift to crawl under and clear the factory running boards.
I raised mine on frame(2 stands), just past angular tube brackets, to the very minimal height(11-12" for stand) on a level garage floor.
Next time I will raise on four jack stands. Much easier.
3. Since the pan design is angled toward the front you will have different "level" if
your vehicle has been lifted or leveled. Limited's are lower in the front on flat ground.
4. Remove the small plastic rock guard, just forward of the transmission, for easier
access to pan bolts.
5. Pan bolts are on the shorter side, the pan gasket hinders them from seating easily upon
reinstallation. I used a 12v impact driver for removal and torque wrench to reinstall.
6. I was only able to drain 2.7 quarts of the old oil, but on first level check had to add up to
5.5 qts for the fluid to start "spilling" to the level point.
7. Orient the crush washers the correct way, flat side against the bolt head. Keep centered
as you tighten, because they are "looser" than a normal washer.
8. The recommend filter does come with the O-ring pre-installed.
9. Non silicone brake cleaner can eat paint, be careful using "cleaners" to the outside
of trans pan when checking for leaks.
10. If your using an older OBD2 dongle, skip, and buy a newer bluetooth model like he recommends. The older wifi models
are slow and don't work well with the newer apps.
Hope that helps.
Just did mine today. The trans pan bolts are what take forever. Just take your time and don't rush going off or on. Also getting the transmission filter took a little time, just lube up the gasket a lot and shimmy it on up. The hose and filter method works well just keep it as vertical as possible because it wants to make a low point under the fill hole. Great video. Proper tools, torque, and item links make this doable. Give yourself at least two hours for full drop. Have fun. Thanks 👍
You are knocking it of the park with these service videos. Thank you for putting them together and sharing them.
Great content dude. One thing to note on this is be SUPER CAREFUL of the torque specs for the bolts on the perimeter of the pan. They are super delicate and can snap easily if over torqued.
Good call! Can’t believe they only require 5ft/lbs or 62inch/lbs. I don’t think I’ve ever torqued anything to that spec. Thanks man!
Exactly! I had mine at around 15 by accident and snapped one right off. Costed about 150 bucks to get it drilled out and replaced because of the size, position and the delicacy of the pan.@@T4Rgarage
@@sunnydlight2375 Damn that sucks! I’m going to pin your comment for others to see
me too. Got a digital torque for like 90$. Dont skimp out on your tools@@sunnydlight2375
Can confirm did this to my chevy Trailblazer and overtorqued one bolt and stripped it out.
Just followed the video and completed task with out issue. Thanks 🙏
Appreciate your precise and informed videos!
Just did this on my “new to me” 2011 Limited with 215kms, unsure if the trans had been service. Video made it so much easier to prep everything I needed. Went very smooth. Thanks!
Happy to hear that, thanks
Best tutorial I’ve seen, awesome work man!
after watching your video, can"t wait to do some work on my 4Runner
Your channel definitely has my favorite 4runner videos. You're a great speaker, very clear and confident. The editing is spot on, and the information given is clear and concise. Thank you for helping the rest of us DIY! I'll be purchasing via your affiliate links as a thank you.
Thanks for the video,i had the dealer do the last change, didn't replace the filter, will next time, and I will probably do it myself. Was told it has to be done at the dealership because of the steps and temperature range, you made it look easy,12o on a 07 sr5.

Excellent video! I have this task coming up shortly and will be saving it. Thank you.
Awesome tutorial on how to do this!! Really makes it look easy! Thanks for the video!
One of the best videos I have seen on this procedure. I would advise people in the rust belt Not drop the pan. The pan bolt heads can snap off easily when rusted. Safer to just drain abs fill in those cases.
What gear shift knob is that? Looks great.
Just purchased a used 2017 4Runner and looking to do all the maintenance my self, and just came across this channel. Huge plus!!! Definitely subbed will tune it for all the DIY videos
Nice one man.. definitely feel good about doing it myself now👌🏽
I just did a drain and refill. Just a couple of things to note:
1. I opened the check before the drain. A bunch of liquid came out. I think this is normal when the car is not running.
2. I left it parked overnight and drain about 3.2 quarts out. So have 4 quarts ready if you plan to do just a drain and refill.
Great vid, nice camera work and way of explaining things. I have to point out though, its not the transmission pan that needs to be level, it's the vechile that needs to be level. The pan is actually slanted (not level with the vehicle). So use the magnetic level on the vehicle's frame to ensure it's level.
@T4R_Garage - Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! Just used this video to change the transmission fluid in my T4R. Much appreciated! Went perfect.
Awesome! Happy to hear that
Very good video! I've had to stitch together several other drain and fill videos, and yours consolidates the necessary steps into one package. It also nicely clarifies the variation between the thermogun method and OBD2 sensor method, which I'll stick to the latter.
Thank you!
i did the flush with directions i cant remember where from now but i used amsol and have had no problems for 3 years now.
Great Video Thanks!
You are a professional, great video.
Great video and idea with the tubing.
Dude, I have seen many videos of this procedure. But, yours was the best and also very thorough and clean. Plus you got more fluid out as well. Awesome. Subscriber here that always look forward to your videos.
Thanks so much!! 🙏🏼
@@T4Rgarage Can you tell me how often do you have to do this procedure and do you have to always change out the filter? I also see that you must be off roading a lot as I see a lot of mud and some rust underneath. I have seen some videos where people suggest to spray some PB Blaster or something so the bolts of the pan don't break off as they seem prone to breaking, But you didn't seem to have any issues there.
Could u do the power steering fluid change?
Great tutorial
Great video, my friend very well explained great job!
Damn man, excellent job! I’ve watched some videos about this since I’m getting ready to do it and let me tell you this is one of the best videos. I got a scanner cause the IR thermometer keeps giving me different temperatures and I tried the method with the wire inserted in the obd2 but it didn’t work for me. Thx again
Thanks so much man! Yeah I noticed IR thermometer really varies depending on where it’s pointed as well
Great video
GREAT tutorial
I asked my local mechanican shop for an estimate on a filter change and refill……I was told “cost of the fluid, and an hour labor, and there’s no filter available for 21’ 4Runner as it’s labeled as lifetime fluid no maintenance required”…..I said thanks, 🤦♂️ I appreciate it. Yeah I’ll be going to Toyota where it’s $300 and they’re aware that they have filters and replace them in the service. Almost Half that cost is the Toyota WS tranny fluid. Liquid gold. An hour labor, and the filter. And gaskets. Only reason I don’t want to mess with it myself is due to the temp range requirements for refilling and not having a way to get the temp accurately I’m just more comfortable havin Toyota do it. I just did my front/rear diff’s and transfer case drain/fill yesterday. Took me about an hour due to the second skid plate needing to be removed for the front diff.
I REALLY wish Toyota gave us a dip stick for the tranny or the aftermarket would step up with an option for us to add one to our transmissions. Really wouldn’t be that difficult….would just need the proper length dip stick to make it to the bottom of the pan. Could do this with a replacement pan but I reckon there isn’t enough of a demand for one of these.
I asked my dealer for a transmission filter and they said it doesn't have one, its just a metal strainer. Made me question my whole life because every video I've seen has replaced a filter. For context I have a '22 4Runner. 🤷♂️
@@joshaho6725 that’s weird because you can buy a filter from Toyota online. I’d say your service manager misspoke.

Guys you don't really need a temperature tool.
Just let your Toyota ENGINE RUN FOR 13 TO 18 MINUTES then open the check plug it'll drain if overfilled
Great video!
Subscription earned. I just recently bought my first 4Runner, a 2020 Venture edition with 72k miles. I don't have the maintenance records from the previous owner, so my question is should I do a drain & fill or a flush at this point? If it were at 60k or under, I'd go with a flush, but not knowing if the transmission fluid was ever replaced, I'm hesitant on a flush with a Runner with 72k on it.
I think you would be okay to do a full flush at 72K miles
Thanks! Looking forward to more content.
Awesome video dude thank you. I don't quite understand the reason for temp readings and draining when it seems to me adding back the exact amount that was drained would have the same effect. I guess if you have an older 4Runner with no history of maintenance this would make perfect sense. However, as a first owner of a brand-new model to me this seems like extra work for nothing, am I wrong?
I use a sprayer to add the fluid works great $15 bucks at the hardware store
Love your channel. I just bought my first and last (because they last so long) 2021 4 runner. I have been watching all the videos you have posted. Have you ever added the memory seat option? My 4Runner has power seats and I would love to have this as an option. Keep up the great work. I'll keep watching!
Thanks so much! The 4runner limited has power seats with the memory option. I don't think a 3rd party has created anything though, unfortunately.
Thanks for the videos, I hope you can clarify a question I have about something I found in the manual;
If either of the following conditions is met, perform ATF Thermal Degradation Estimate Reset (See page ).
The ATF has been replaced.
HINT:
If 50000 or more is displayed for the Data List item "ATF Thermal Degradation Estimate", thermal degradation of
the ATF is suspected. Perform ATF Thermal Degradation Estimate Reset after replacing the ATF.
Can you speak to this? I looked on the forums and the consensus seems to be that it is a garbage number and it doesn't matter
Sorry, I am not familiar with that
Awesome video and very helpful, but if the infrared thermometer is reading 5 degrees lower than the obd2. Wouldn’t you want to stick to 104-108 and stay towards the lower end of the range to account for the actual higher temp inside? In the video you said stick to the upper range.
I think I made a note/correction in the video. Is it not coming up as a subtitle type message?
@@T4Rgaragewhoops, I didn’t have my subtitles on, my bad.

For someone without a scan tool or temp gauge. How long would you idle for to get the trans temp in the operating window for the service?
Perfect. Thnx
I have a 2013 4Runner, Both oil change and Transmission fluid are complicated 😮
Do you have video for power steering fluid change?
Hey bud! Love the videos! What app did you use on your phone to get the transmission fluid temp?
@@prmtime101 car scanner
@@prmtime101 Thank you!
@@T4Rgarage What was the OBD app that you used on your phone?
So I have the Veepeak and the car scanner app and it doesn’t have a profile for the 4Runner. I selected the 3rd gen Tacoma profile and selected the L4 transmission pan fluid sensor. That gives the information needed. Just curious how you worked around that issue?
FYI-those IR thermometer need to be calibrated and set to the material that you are measuring. Some items are very reflective others are not.
why did you have to drain some fluid after having warmed up?
I noticed you kept the tires on the ground which is how I plan on doing this job myself. I wonder… does it make a difference if you have the factory rake verses a level lift. Would it make much difference when you verify fluid level having the truck completely level vs the front 1 inch lower? Put a bubble level on the frame perhaps?
Yes, just use a bubble level on the frame rail and use something under the tires like a 2x4 to level it
Boy is it ever important to keep engine running when pulling the leveling plug. I wasted a whole quart because i turned off engine the first time.
Would it be okay to skip the pan drop and filter replace? I struggled with my 98 Tacoma getting the pan sealed again granted it used a red tube of gasket that was impossible
How often does the transmission filter need to be replaced?
Do you rub an oil on the new gasket before you install it? Or do you install it dry? Also, the thing I dislike the most about these kinds of jobs is how much of a mess I make. How do you manage to keep all of that falling oil to land in the oil pan?
What brand is your rufrack? Great video
I tried to use the veepeak scanner with the free app and you can’t get the temps. You have to do something with the PID and it was confusing. Any info on that?
Why do you drain out the newly added fluid when it reaches the appropriate temperature range? Is it from the fluid expanding from heating up?
Which app did you use with your OBD2 scanner?
Good video, I’m not a macanic but I do follow a good Toyota technician channel… the nut car care … and he said in one video talking about the 4Runner transmission that changes the fluid every 60k miles but do not need change the filter , that transmission have two internal filter, so is any reason you change? Thanks
Great video! After following all the steps and drive it twice I got no issues. BUT, on my third drive got a little slip while deaccelerating? Almost near to fully stop... then, few miles later I needed to get going fast , pulled full power and I got a big slip... the transmission didn't shift and i got stuck for a few seconds, then it shifted suddenly I didn't fail.. It isn't happen all the time but it's really annoying when it does... before draining and refilling I never had any problems or slippage... 4runner 2012 100.000 miles
Once a again! Great video y hope someone could give me any idea of what's happening and how to fix it
Recheck that your fluid level is set correctly and that you have no leaks. Sorry to hear you are experiencing issues. What fluid did you use?
I'll check the level... I've been looking for leaks, but I haven't seen any... used 4 liters of the Original Toyota ATF
@@joseoyarzun827 You need about 4.5 L maybe a bit more. I would add another liter and then set the level using the method in the video via the scan tool.
It worked!! I added more and now it's really smooth in all gears!!! Even better than before...
Thanks for the tips!!
Happy new year from 🇨🇱 Chile!
Great video, thank you! What app did you use for the Veepeak OBD2 scanner to access the Live Data when setting the the fluid. I really like the price point of the Veepeak until I'm in need of something like the Xtool D7
I see now you've already answered my question. Thanks!
The “old” trans fluid he’s referring to is T-IV fluid. I’d recommend using WS not the older stuff.
Is there a part number/link for the O ring on the fill plug? I don't think the strainer/filter O ring would fit the fill plug as well? Thanks
Does anyone know the part number for the Trans fill plug O-ring? Cannot seem to find anywhere or at least anywhere that makes it clear that its correct.
Do you have a part number for the fill plug? I stripped the female threads, so I guess I need to use a helicoil to fix that, but just to be safe I'd like to replace the fill plug too. I tried looking online, even went to the local Toyota service center and can't find the part number anywhere...

my owners manual says check the fluid and replace not flush. I have an 05 4 runner
Is it possible to use Valvoline Multi-Vehicle (ATF) Full Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid ?
You are asking for issues if you use anything other than the recommended Toyota fluid. Transmission are very fussy
Great video One thing when you were draining the fluid from the check plug did you let it drain until it completely stops flowing out , or just a drip. or just a slight flow ( it seemed like you didn't show at the very end what it looks like when you put the check bolt back in
When it slows to a trickle, that's fine. Put the plug back in. In theory, it will never completely stop because the engine is running, the transmission is heating up, and the fluid is continuing to expand as it heats up. Don't wait too long because you'll soon be out of the temperature band.
Good tutorial overall except that the frame should be level, not the transmission fluid pan. Your transmission fluid pan is level because the floor is graded. I used both a ScanGauge II and an infrared thermometer. The infrared thermometer temperatures were 3 to 4 degrees lower than the ScanGauge II. If you have a ScanGauge II you will need to program it in the X-gauge setting to monitor the transmission fluid temperatures as there is not a preset. Same procedure for a FJ Cruiser, which I have.
Thank you! I have HD coils on the rear in anticipation for the rear bumper I am building. The floor is graded but my vehicle has a lot of positive rake at the moment, much more than a stock 4runner.
i would just do a drain and fill. the filter is just a mesh screen. if it is clogged you have much bigger issues
Where can I get one of those t-shirts?

From what I've read online, the custom PIDs for Torque Pro give you both transmission pan temp and transmission torque converter temp. Which do you use for the proper temperature reading?
Sorry for the late reply, I didn’t receive a notification of your comment. You want the pan temp
Man I'm having a hard time trying to get original genuine toyota engine fluids for my 4runner limited.coz that atf bottle label looks different from what I see on the internet.i don't know who's selling the real and fake stuff so I'm just gonna take my 4runner limited to the toyota dealer and let them do all the flush & fill saves me the hassle and cost of shopping around for possibly fake stuff.
Great video! I've watched some other videos regarding maintenance and schedule, but did not say to change the filter, do I really need to replace the filter or change it every other trans fluid change? Thanks!
You probably won’t need to change it. I did because it wasn’t too expensive and I didn’t want to have to drop the pan again if it was dirty. To get the extra fluid out you could pop it out, let the fluid drain out, and then pop it back in.
At the 11:00 minute video mark, did you drain and then refill it with what was just drained?
That was the overflow draining to the exact level. At 6:32, you can see that the drain plug has a tube on the inside. The overflow goes over the top of that tube and out the drain plug. The rest of the fluid stays inside.
Wait you said the laser temperature was lower but you said to shoot for the higher range / would it be opposite?
