This is probably the most famous performance of 'Sultans Of Swing' by @MarkKnopfler and @direstraitsofficial . Yet, even as a professional guitar player, music teacher, producer and songwriter for over 10 years I hadn't seen this video. I'm so happy I have now as the energy is breathtaking, their musicality is mind blowing and there is so much we can learn from their music mastery as artists, musicians and performers.

Such a great video. You hit the notes spot on, basically. I've seen dozens of reaction vids from guitar players, but none of them could explain and show it live as you just did. And that you are fully aware that the song is not about one element, like the guitars, but all the musicians playing: The awesome drummer, The perfect base that keeps the the groove to the floor, how he sometimes looks at him and the keyboardist, just to check if everyone is on the same page. Mark seems to have full faith in the drummer, which raise his boldness to go to new places. And not to forget the 2nd guitarist, he plays a cruical role as well for the whole soundscape. You can see the joy in him, because he can feel the band working like clockwork together. They all give their best performance, so that the lead artist (singer/guitarist) can stand firm on their shoulders. And shine, like the Sun. Its true Alchemy.

I don't think I've ever seen a guitar player and a drummer so linked up as Knopfler and Williams were here.
I often see many people in awe of Terry Williams and of course Mark Knopfler, but this is the first time I see someone noticing that Terry and Mark are glued together, Terry is on fire but never loses Mark's guitar and is actually replying and/or teaming up with him. Truly awesome! I've always wondered how bad must Terry have been in the studio for Mark to drop him during the BiA recording and then replace him when the band regrouped in 1990 for the OES album and tour...
PAPAPAPOW! PAPAPAPOW! PAPAPAPOW! PAPA PA POW!!! I first saw in the middle 80's, before I ever saw them live. Loved Terry locking in with Mark. I have had moments on stage where the drummer and I (slap double bass) would get the engine room all locked in and then get our sung harmonies locked in. Loved it.

I wonder why too. Especially when we consider he changed him for Chris Whiten who is considered a very good drummer, but who is to me the less good DS ever had.
Mark Knoffler's mastery aside, Terry Williams on drums absolutely held this performance together with one of the best displays I've seen. Great times.

@@FaanaMusic Whilst this is an amazing version of Sultans of Swing, they take it to the next level at their Wembley 85 performance. One of the greatest shows ever. The concert was ended with Tunnel of Love which is well worth all 16 minutes! Would highly recommend :)

Amen to that reverend, my three greatest live performances are pink Floyd at Pompeii, alchemy, and talking heads stop making sense, tremendous.

The drummers dad was in the audience seeing him for the first time so the band agreed to allow him to showcase. So cool!

Yea, he fycks up the whole song like a shifty out of control drummer that the sound mixer should have reined in.
That speed picking at the end was Mark's perfect dismount and he received all 10's from the judges.
Hevis kind of ridiculous. Such a master of his craft.
Imagine being at that show that night, back in '82. Having no idea what an amazing treat that you would get? Mark needs to be respected so much more than he is. The entire band was so damn tight that night. Simply brilliant musicians.
I've seen Dire Straights a couple of times in Oz... they play tighter than a fish's sphincter! Brilliant!!
I was there. 21 years old and loving Dire Sraits. We, myself and 3 friends, were about 12 rows from the front. The music was loud and felt like certain notes were thumping me in the chest. Loved it. I had been obsessing about Knopflers guitar playing for a couple of years. And here was the man himself giving it everything right in front of us. Incredible and most memorable night.

He's a guitarist's guitarist. There's a reason why he's top 3 for so many legendary guitarists. Got to see him guest w Clapton in '88. Just boggling to watch them together. They PUSHED each other. And BTW, some dude named Phil Collins was drumming for him. Still remember that night. :-) Cheers!

I absolutely agree. Your teaching about Mark knoflers style is spot on. I know no nothing about guitar. It seems Mark knopfler is playing guitar almost banjo style. It's absolutely incredible.

Agree - breaking Knopfler’s solos down by demonstrating with your guitar adds an informative level for those who aren’t guitar players. This song is heavily influenced by jazz and blues & why this is one of my favorite Rock songs.
I totally agree!!!! I am not a musician, and neither are many of the other reactionaries. Thus, I value this guitar teacher’s observations, comments + thoughts.

Mark Knopfler is such an incredible guitarist. I love how, in this performance, he teased the audience before that last solo climax...he went all around the houses musically to get back to where he was going in the first place, and it was awesome
I do not think that Mark Knopfler can play a bad note. His guitar playing is an extension of him. It is him. It is about expression. If you ever see interviews with Mark Knopfler, he is so humble. He says anyone can do this. Wrong. We can be passable. I have been playing guitar for 47 years. It has never been only driver. Mark Knopfler makes me wish that it should have been. I am just so glad that music can move us and we can appreciate the truly gifted. Such a great video Faana.
I've had the pleasure of seeing Mark in concert a few times. There was one time about 20 odd years ago now when he came out and the first thing he did was hit the most outrageous bum note to open the show! He just turned to the rest of the band and laughed then carried on as if nothing had happened and was his usual majestic self the rest of the way.
I was also at another concert when at the end he turned to Guy Fletcher, the keyboard player who's been with him since the Dire Straits days, and handed him the red signature Fender Stratocaster he'd been playing throughout the evening. He turned to the audience and simply said "It's his birthday." What a wonderful present!
I was in a car accident in 1988 that gave me a spinal injury and damage to the nerves in my left arm. Because of this playing drums became very difficult and painful. So ten years later I quit playing in bands due to the long shows. I was a singing drummer so I asked the lead guitar player if I could borrow the acoustic guitar he used in our band. I showed promise on it so he gave it to me. I was able to learn to play chords to sing a lot of songs and keep performing but my fretting hand has issues. It`s so frustrating to KNOW I can play so much better but not having the physical ability to reach the levels in my brain because of damaged nerves. But I DID learn to play very quickly especially with the help of alcohol to numb the pain, so that will always be a victory in my book, and I`ve enjoyed myself over the years.

My favourite thing about this performance is it highlights that these guys know each other front, back and side to side! They have a telepathy and it produces this magnificent......jam session! The glances and smiles to each other are what music should be about. They are loving it which makes us love it even more! Band chemistry = Boss level
Right!?! When Terry Williams HAMMERS the drums during his first fill, the rest of the band looks back and smiles. You can SEE them all thinking "He's gonna make us kick it up a notch" and then they do. While Knopfler is amazing as he always is, Terry Keith is an equal in this song - he drives it forward hard and has such tasty fills. One of the most talented bands ever.
I was 20 years old sitting in my Dads old car waiting for him to come out of the post office ....the radio was on, this came on the radio and booooom I was amazed and a fan for life. What a musician he is.
This live version shows off dynamics more than any other song that comes to my mind.

Taylor Swift is touring Australia at the moment. As popular as she is, Dire Straits played to more people in 1986 in Australia. They did 20 or 21 nights in Sydney. That's insane. No wonder they took a six year break.
This is the first reviewer that got how this song is a performance with feeling not just playing the notes. Fast then slow, quiet then aggressive. Taking you on a journey.

I started with a pick. Then I took classical guitar lessons and learnt that finger picking is the only way to really feel the instrument. Never looked back.

As a guitar teacher you should truely be in awe of Mark Knopfler. If only for the fact that he's actually left-handed but mastered a right-handed guitar to a level most right-handed players can only dream of ever achieving. That's why his fretting hand looks so nonchalant, it's his dominant hand. He's a true virtuoso.
Left handed? Well, every left handed violinists learns to play orthodox style. Playing "the other way round" is no more difficult than " so called" orthodox.
@@musik102 Anyone can learn anything with either hand. Hell, they forced my father to learn to write with his right hand. But that doesn't by no means mean it's as easy as it is doing what your brain is ment to do.

@@musik102 Now you're just being silly. A guitar players produces a note by using both hands (unless you start tapping), while a pianist only needs 1. A pianist in essence is playing 2 songs at once, hence needs to teach both hands to be proficient. But it is quite possible to play a song on a piano using only 1 hand. Bach's "Chaconne, 2nd Partita in D Minor" for instance can be played by one hand on piano but takes two on the violin, which it is written for. There actually are quite a few one handed concert pianists. Paul Wittgenstein was a guitarist who lost one arm in the First World War but became a rather famous concert pianist after that. Peter Taussig, Cyril Smith, Alexei Sultanov, Izumi Tateno are all rather famous classical one armed pianists. Can you name one famous one armed guitarist ?

I think it was 1983. I was taken to see them by my father in 1985 at Wembley arena at the age of 10, it had a lasting impact, the best ever concert I have ever experienced. Dire Straits and Mark are just incredible.

Mark is considered a VIRTUOSO guitarist in his own league. The drummer worked so well with Mark. But the music that is so awesome.

Go back and listen to the studio version if you've never heard it and you realize just how phenomenal this band really was live. They just don't miss the slightest bit.
It's up tempo from the studio but has everything the studio version does and more.
I've heard this song on the radio for forty years now and have always liked dire straits but never had the level of appreciation for just how good they actually were until I saw and heard this.
Yeah, same for me I have heard the studio version many times, but the energy coming from this live footage blew my mind!

Mark Knopfler sounds so incredibly nonchalant and chill in his singing - I absolutely agree - but even watching him PLAY, he looks completely chill and nonchalant and almost careless playing that guitar as well, and it SOUNDS so amazing.

I was at Hammersmith back in July '83 and when you're 18, at the time, you just don't appreciate how special it was.
We knew Mark, John Illsley, Hal and Alan Clark were good (With Tommy Mandel on backup keys) but, oh my God, Terry Williams on the drums was just awesome!
He always played like that, not sure if the story of his parents seeing his first performance, I suspect it was the first time they saw him with Dire Straights.
Terry is by far the best drummer, no one seems to have heard of.

Best ever!!! Mark Knopfler is just a genious!! Not only is he a fantastic guitarist/singer/songwriter, he is just so so special including his humour. Sensational guy!!!! He also plays his guitar from a great film 'Local Hero' - just incredible!!!!!!!
Knopfler is such a singular talent. He effortlessly creates such a strong emotional landscape and then lets his virtuoso technical ability fly. Oh, and he can write and sing a bit to boot.

I am 70 years of age, and I was listening to Mark Knopfler when I was 15 years old, He is a master, he is a God of the guitar. I love his music still after all these years. Listen to "Tunnel of Love", by same band... it will make you cry.

@@kmach1000David left in 1980, he was in the band from founding 1977-1980, hal joined in 1980 and was in the band until 84, alchemy where this live video is from was recorded in 83
Mark´s brother David left the band while recording the studio album Making Movies in 1980. He was replaced by Hal Lindes who you see in the Video to Mark´s left. The recording took place on the 22nd and 23rd of July 1983 in the Hammersmith Odeon in London and was used for the live album Alchemy which was released in March 1984.

Dire Straits/Knopfler fan since I first heard the (studio version) Sultans of Swing at 16, in 1977. Loved it - but the Alchemy tour took it to a new level. I know nothing of musical theory, and couldn't play an instrument to save my life... but very much enjoyed your reaction, and seriously impressed by playing along. I tend to lose myself in music and fail miserably at being analytical about it. I am sure you have heard Brothers in Arms (I love the studio version) but if you haven't, treat yourself to a guitar singing, and a man narrating.

The studio version and this performance have the same song name, but this is far and away not just a different song, but other worldly.
the fact that he doesnt stick to the regular play through but rather is able to throw in what feels right and that in itself is just as good or even better ...then he throws in some dynamic shifts and has the balls to let the drummer off the leash ...and yes even his improv is impressive due to it being more outside the norm and thus catching us and pulling us along ... wonderful
You nailed it! Mark doesnot play the guitar, he makes the guitar tell you a story. Those up and downs, explosiona and calm parts, the solo all tell you a story, and with the outro you think that’s a complete apart part from the song. But when the outro becones richer and speeds up you understand the whole parts of tne song tell you the same story, it is like the “journey of the hero” the oldest method of storytelling.
What makes Makrk different from all other musicians out there is this. He speaks when he sings and he makes his guitar tell you a story visualşzed by lyrics.

It was so lovely to watch your response to this video and to the wonderful musicians of Dire Straits! I have loved this piece for over 40 years. I sing but I was never lucky enough to learn any instrument. It was so nice to hear you talking about communicating through music. This is something that I have always felt that Dire Straits excel in. The Brothers in Arms video is a perfect example of it; if you watch the video, it conveys the sadness of the story but, if you close your eyes and just listen to the guitar replying to the sung words, the emotion is overwhelming!
What I love about Sultans is their celebration of the fact that they love this music AND that they can all celebrate together!

lovely to see someone having multiple musical orgasms with this tune. This gem has been a part of my life since somebody gave me "Alchemy" in 1987 for my 10th anyversary, glad to see it still hits all the right buttons for a younger crowd.

I was a child of the 70's and teen in the 80's and I was raised in an environment of love and respect for all music. My father was a fan of the guitar and passed that along to me. Dire Straits saved guitar rock in the late '70s. Disco was all you heard on the radio. Sultans of Swing changed that - i remember when I first heard it. I was playing pinball at the local 7-11 stop and rob, drinking an ice cold Dr Pepper. How many songs can you remember the first time you heard it over 45 years ago? I suspect not many. This song did that to me.
Still listen to this album today on a regular basis.

Superb analysis of Mark's guitar style. I was surprised however no mention of his " chicken pickin' ". The technique is relatively old school, heard in bluegrass and country music for decades.The pull off and hammer on arpeggios at the end are so iconic if they were all you heard you would know what song it is.

I just stumbled on to your page and wanted to say a huge THANK YOU for this video. I've sung almost all my life (i'm 50ish now), I learned by listening to records - sung in contests as a kid where people said I had great musicality, eventually singing with a man who plays piano and ultimately became the leader of the Duke Ellington Orchestra - but sadly I never learned to read music or play an instrument (bad advice from a voice teacher who said "don't it will detract from your singing..!?" ). I also taught dance so my good sense of timing paid off. Most of that is just innate. Of course these guys play together a TON so that they can take it off the page the way they are in this performance (I would think they have a basic sketch of what they want to do and work within that to some degree). One thing I want to say is that I agree - to watch something like this is to witness the divine. There's talent, practice, and then there's this energy that an artist taps into - It's you and the channeled energy which is why you recognise it when you see/hear it. The audience can't put it into words but on some level they recognise and feel it too. It's a high. When Knopfler smiles and those notes spring out - he's spinning the world on his fingertips like it's no problem at all.
I had a long term illness in my 30s that ended music for me - and for a long time I just didn't listen anymore - but lately I miss it, and it's so great to hear someone who knows music talk about it in this way. I fear this kind of creativity in music will end with AI etc. Keep teaching and passing it on. Thanks again. I'll be watching some more of your videos. ;)

Yeah! 💯 That's exactly how I see it! The other day I watched a video called 'Music Education - The Solution To The World Peace ' or something like that. I might talk about this topic more in the future as this is very important to me - music as a metaphor and practice for deep communication. I believe we really need this.
I've seen them all live, Pink Floyd, Genesis and many more over a lot of years but Dire Straits live Alchemy and 'On the Night' performances were very special. Knopfler shows his all round mastery on guitar in his performance of 'Private Investigations' 'On the Night' gig. As an alternative try 3 shades of the same great song by 'Cutting Crew' with their live performance at Rockpalast with (I just) Died in your arms' in 2007...Stunning!

I really love listening to real musicians listening to this for the first time. There's just some much going on in this performance , and the band is vibing off each other so amazingly. And Knopfler is operating on genius level in this performance. It's really something special.
