If the Super Metroid soundtrack had been professionally recorded in a studio, without the limitations of the SNES hardware, how would it have sounded like? By using vintage sample libraries and synths, this is my personal reconstruction of the Lower Brinstar (Red Soil) theme, in full Hi-Fi audio glory.
Each instrumental line was remade from scratch, note by note, seeking to preserve the original arrangement by Kenji Yamamoto. Going for a slightly different route than the current "SNES soundtrack restoration" trend, I used only a few of the original uncompressed samples used in the game ROM, and chose to recreate most of the sounds using era-appropriate synths and samples. I tried my best to preserve the original panning and overall mix structure of the original track, while upgrading it with a more polished production. The result is, at least to my ears, sonically compatible with what was possible to be achieved using high-end synth and sampler hardware available in 1994.
Every keyboard you see on the video is actually being used as a controller to trigger either a MIDI module, a VST, or both at the same time. I prefer to do it this way in order to make it easier for the viewer to differentiate between parts and sounds. Here is a more detailed breakdown:
Low drums - Arturia Beatstep (as a VST MIDI controller)
Low Strings - Roland Alpha Juno 1 (custom low strings patch)
Repeating noise - Behringer Model D is playing a gated noise patch, triggered by the Arturia Beatstep sequencer and further processed with delay;
Bell arps - Novation Ultranova (as a VST MIDI controller)
Main flute lead - Novation X-Station (as a VST MIDI controller)
Choir - Novation X-station (as a VST MIDI controller)
Echo Piano - Roland A37 (as a VST MIDI controller)
VSTs were mostly by Korg, Roland and old sample libraries from E-mu and Akai running in Kontakt. Instead of just converting the .smc sequencing information into MIDI data, I chose to reperform all the instrumental parts to get more expression. The recorded MIDI sequences were later processed in a DAW (Reaper), where everything was further edited, mixed and mastered using mostly UAD-2 plugins. This all took a lot more effort than what I had anticipated. If you want to get more technical, I'd be pleased to answer specific questions in the comments.

It's funny... Upper Brinstar and lower Norfair get all the attention, but Lower Brinstar and Upper Norfair are the tracks I go to more than any others.

This is such an amazing rendition, stays very true to the original version in terms of ominous percussion, which really adds to the atmosphere of the original game.
The instrument choice in this rendition is spot-in imo. Synths for keyboard, and a well emulated shakuhachi really cements the atmosphere the original was going for. Honestly, I’d be really happy if you guys did more science stuff, to put it simply

This is a greater level of quality & professionalism than I would expect from Nintendo if they made a full price remake of Super Metroid today. Words cannot describe how deep to my core this hits.

This absolutely sets the atmosphere for a swampy and mysterious environment. The transition from a lively jungle to this somber melody is amazing.
You definitely hit the original spot on. This sounds just like a high quality version of it. Very nicely done. It's still amazing how a song can be beautiful but also ominous at the same time.

Man, this is incredible! The whole soundtrack NEEDS to be remastered this way. Most of the orchestral arrangements don't get the original feeling of the tracks, but this really nails it.

Thanks! I try to stick very close to the originals, but I generally reinterpret the sounds according to indirect cues or references to the aesthetics of the era. For example, to get the reference to process the sounds in this version, I took inspiration from Vangelis' "Antartica" and Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence" , two beautiful soundtrack themes that evoke a sense of desolation, with sparse sounds and huge ambiances, which I thought would fit Lower Brinstar pretty well. For more accurate versions, but in the same vibe of remastering, you should probably also check out the Super Metroid Ost restorations on The Brickster's channel, which are pretty good in their own right. @@Synt5 That's a very neat approach. I myself tried for some time to remake some tracks, exactly with the same feel, but as if they were played live with "real" instruments.

I can't believe this doesn't have more views. This is simply amazing. I grew up loving this game, the battery on my cartridge was bad so I could only play for so long before the save data corrupted or I was forced to leave the game on and a power surge would cause me to lose my progress. You've done a great service to the original from true Metroid fan I want to thank you for this amazing remix. You have amazing talent. Keep up the great work!!

Idk if you know, but modern everdrive for super Nintendo now can emulate a chip called the MSU-1 chip. Basicly allows cd quality audio in place of the original music (and also video). Super Metroid is one of the games that has some mods using it, however, if you were to ever recreate every track, I can absolutely see people using yours over literally every existing one.
Sure, I know the MSU-1, and would be thrilled to have someone take my remixes and inserting into the game. For now, I should aim to complete at least the main level tracks - maybe that could already be enough for a MSU-1 patch, who knows? Cheers!

Phenomenally done. The spirit of the original communicated through a crisp and dreamy 80's sci-fi/fantasy motif. Smooth. Spellbinding. Only needs harder hitting bass, especially on the note after the rest.

Thanks! To produce this cover, I was inspired by the sounds in Vangelis' Antarctica soundtrack, and I tried to emulate the same sense of space and isolation with the reverbs and effects.

This is amazing, I've been looking for something like this for quite some time. If you were able to recreate all of the tracks, somebody could probable make it into a romhack to include cd quality tracks. This plus the widescreen romhack would make the definitive version to replay Super Metroid.

Your remasters should be used in the MSU1 patches for Super Metriod. MSU1 allows the game to have high quality CD audio on a game if patched and of course only done with a SD2SNESS flash cart

Spot on job true to the atmosphere of the game and your attention to detail in keeping with the original even dropping out certain instruments as it transitions is really cool, its a pleasure to hear the original remastered so well and with such complementing instrument choices, well done indeed! also if its your kind of thing it would be really interesting to hear your rendition of a track from quantum fighter (an nes game) some really unusual tracks in that one, if not chrono trigger has some amazing tracks, corridors of time, secret of the forest etc, and one more interesting choice would be from a game called skyblazer on the snes, you'll either love it or hate it ha ha but definitely an obscure and interesting ost. Just thought id throw some interesting and unusual ideas out there. but whatever you choose anything you make for us to hear is appreciated so please keep em coming!
Hi again! I could probably do a few remakes from Chrono Trigger this way, but I have to make sure they'd really stand out from the million other remixes out there, and that takes significant time and effort, but still I'd be inclined to do it. Quantum Fighter and other 8 bit games would demand a different approach: since they don't use samples, the reference of timbre to produce a CD-like remaster like the the Super Metroid tracks would be tricky. But it can be done. I know Skyblazer, thought it was really cool back in the day, but can't remember the music - I'll definitely check it out! Finally, I'm all in for obscure OSTs - it could really be an interesting path to explore, as so many other channels only focus on the mainstream (FF, Chrono Trigger, DK, etc). @@Synt5 ha ha my thinking exactly about obscure tracks. I get where you are coming from with the samples will bare that in mind in future. Skyblazer is a funny one you can hear the instrument choices so clearly but the rhythm can be chaotic and hard to reproduce, very unique style though. The "temple infernus" and "beginning of the journey" stand out in my mind from that game. will be keeping an eye on your content for sure!
@Garyth Mardellis I just wanted to let you know that I've moved forward with the "obscure tracks" idea. I've just posted the first cover in what I suspect will become a series of videos - a song from Super Binball Behind the Mask for the SNES. In time, when I figure out a good approach to take on 8-bit titles, I should try the Quantum Fighter Stage 1 you suggested, as well as other NES and Master System songs I've been flirting with. @@garythmardellis1289 The problem with 8-bit osts is that you don't get the timbral cues you'd normally get from sample-based systems like the SNES, so you have to rely entirely on the music to find good production templates. The Quantum Fighter is a cool challenge: it is surely 80's sounding, so I am already having a few ideas. For example, that "drop" in QF's Stage 1 music with that low, sustained bass note right before the music repeats itself reminds me of a similar drop in The Bolshoi's 1986 single Sunday Morning at 3:43 (or 3:40 in the ext version). So I keep collecting references such as this one until I feel I have enough to guide my versions. Cheers!

Yeah, that one shakuhachi... So, when recording the guiding tracks for the video, I used the JV-2080. But later during mixing I kept the midi and replaced the sound with the shakuhachi from the E-mu Proteus 3 module, using an Emu sample bank from Digital Sound Factory. I applied EQ and reverb, but what you hear is essentially E-mu P3. The thing is, E-mu has a long history with shakuhachis since the Emulator II (= the Enigma flute, Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer, etc), but that specific sample from the Proteus 3 has a different nuance to it. When choosing the samples to be used in the game, composers had to take into account the size of each sample, so they used a very short flute sample (taken from the Proteus 1/2), and programmed the modulation and volume expression for the melody in Lower Brinstar. In the Proteus 3, the shak sample is much longer, and already contained much of the same vibrato and volume expression that the original flute sound in SM was trying to convey via programming. However, despite the Proteus 3 module was already available in 1994, it would not be a viable option to be used in the game due to the size of the sample. Since my version is basically an exercise of speculative interpretation, I thought it would be a perfect fit to expand on the supposed original intention for Lower Brinstar.
