Going in a different direction than the typical Super Metroid Remix out there, I present my personal remake
of the iconic Green Brinstar/Overgrown theme in full hi-fi audio glory. Please expand for more info.
Each instrumental line was remade from scratch, note by note, seeking to preserve the original arrangement by Kenji Yamamoto. Different from the current "SNES soundtrack restoration" trend, I used only a few of the original uncompressed samples used in the game ROM, and chose to recreate most of the sounds using era-appropriate synths and samples. I tried my best to preserve the original panning and overall mix structure of the original track, while upgrading it with a more polished production. The result is, to my ears, sonically compatible with what was possible to be achieved using high-end synth and sampler hardware available in 1994.
Every keyboard you see on the video is actually being used as a controller to trigger either a MIDI module, a VST, or both at the same time. I prefer to do it this way in order to make it easier for the viewer to differentiate between parts and sounds. Here is a more detailed breakdown:
Intro Marimba - Roland A37 (midi controller for Jv2080)
Bass - Novation X-Station (midi controller for Dexed Vst + Kontakt)
"Tam-tam" drums - Arturia Beatstep (midi controller for Kontakt)
"Tam-tam" synths - Novation X-Station (midi controller for Dexed and Korg Vsts)
EP/Voice - Roland A-37 (midi controller for Kontakt + Jv2080)
Little pop-up synth - Alpha Juno 1 (custom organ patch + midi controller for Korg Vst)
Voice Pad - Novation Ultranova (midi controller for JV2080 + Korg Vst)
Crescendo voice pad at the end - Roland A-37 (midi controller for JV2080)
VSTs were mostly by Korg, Roland and old sample libraries from E-mu and Akai running in Kontakt. Instead of just converting the .smc sequencing information into MIDI data, I chose to reperform all the instrumental parts to get more expression. The recorded MIDI sequences were later processed in a DAW (Reaper), where everything was further edited, mixed and mastered using mostly UAD-2 plugins. This all took a lot more effort than what I had anticipated. If you want to geek out on this, I'd be pleased to answer your specific questions in the comments.

Wow, this is the sound of nostalgia. It sounds as good as I remember the game being, if that makes sense. The mind plays tricks the older you get. Every time I listen to the original and think fondly back on the amazing experience of playing Super Metroid for the first time, my mind makes the memory just a little bit better than it actually was. Somehow, this rendition sounds as good as the ultra-polished memory I have of my first time entering Brinstar: there is a palpable sense of adventure as the music fades in, panning from side to side, while the elevator continues its descent and who-knows-what awaits me. This is phenomenal. Thank you so much for making this.

This is one of the catchiest themes in VG history, and your cover captured every detail perfectly. Worthy of being included in the OST if they ever do a remake of Super Metroid!

My gosh, this deserves so much more recognition. This song has always echoed through my bones, and this HD remake/remaster perfectly recaptures that with no compromises.
Thanks! With so many Super Metroid soundtrack restorations/remakes going on, it is increasingly difficult to stand apart. I try to capture not only the original sounds in the game, but also the music production values, and then build on them in an attempt to realize their full musical potential. I'm glad you liked it.

This is executed brilliantly each sound is perfectly chosen and contrasted! one of the best versions I have heard please do more Metroid, brinstar red soil would be awesome. Also if there was a download I would totally buy this track.

Holy sh*t... I'm into synthesizers, samplers, DAWs etc...also played SM right when it was released... this cover kicks MAJOR ass!!
Now THIS is a proper cover! You got the sound just right! It has those beautiful, dark, atmospheric pads, exotic synth marimbas (or maybe kalimbas), the awesome electro synth bass and percussion. Great job!

I've always wanted to hear the backing "choir" sort of sounding part during the main melody of the song in isolation, I always get glimpses of it when different sound effects take up the same audio channel as the leading "instrument" and I always want to hear more
As an audio purist for videogame osts I've always felt that that the average super metroid soundtrack remake fails to capture the feel the original had. But this captures it perfectly!

you sir, madame, or otherwise are the best metroid cover artist I've ever seen. these sound like literal prime renditions of the tracks. other metroid cover artists usually lose the feel of the original, but yours adds more intricacies while still not hurting what the original had. love it, only SM covers that've ever been competitive with the originals for me.

Amazing, great recreation of the original sounds, you totally were very careful with the Kalimba/Marimba at the beginning and the bass lines. You should try doing Rocky Maridia, Wrecked Ship or even Mother Brain's Theme.

The amount of detail you paid to make sure it was a just about as close to the original is amazing. I am a programmer as well and I think it’s an amazing gift to be able to pay attention to the little details in a song. So important!! Great work M8!

While the process does involve artistic perception and critical listening skills, those alone wouldn't take me very far, as there are times that I need to logically map and engineer what's happening all over the spectrum of frequency and dynamics. In that sense, it sure does feel like programming, but with sounds. Cheers!

@@Synt5 Hey, I just liked the movie Heathers and noticed the similarity and dug into it. David Newman was a big deal at that time, and Japanese games composers took a lot of inspiration from Hollywood movies soundtracks. BTW, really loved the remix - serious skills and respect there. If you ever got the chance to do lower brinstar you'd have at least one fan!

Regarding the Heathers-Brinstar link, I think you're right, Japanese composers indeed took inspiration from lots of different sources, so it's perfectly plausible that Heathers could have been an influence. Another indication is that the Heathers track is heavily based on the Yamaha DX7, which is the same synthesizer used as a source for the Upper Brinstar bass in the game, and that is another important sonic link between the two tracks. But we would only know for sure if someone asked composer Kenji Yamamoto directly...
