    My lawn had crab, bahia, and dallis, but all were able to be pulled up, root and all. Some weeds snap off when you pull, despite your best efforts so you can't pull the root out. But these pull great. Over time, this stuff is all but gone because my St Augustine filled in the gaps they left. These are very satisfying to pull!

    Ok, at 3:30 you talk about a different type of grassy weed, specifically a clumping type tall fescue. I think I have some of that in my cool MN lawn, but I KNOW I have quite a bit of Yellow or Green Foxtail. I have struggled to remove it for over a decade. What can I do to get rid of it Allyn? Maybe you can do a video on it, and other grassy weeds!

    Thanks, nice video. Great explanation for life cycle of crab grass. I try to use organic lawncare methods and I don't worry too much about weeds. One organic alternative for prevention is to have a thick, healthy lawn that crowds out the crab grass as much as possible. Your lawn is so thick that I do not think you need to put the preemergent.

      I live in Rock Hill SC. What is the best time of the year to treat for crabgrass?

    • @fuel4insanity6
      @fuel4insanity6 3 роки тому

      Early spring. The crabgrass is mostly dead during winter but regerminates arround April..when the soil temp is arround 51-54 degrees. When that happens then the seeds pop and up they come..small at first..then they slowly take over. Best time to go preemergant is early March and early June. Get the crabgrass..and then before the summer weeds start. Read your label to find out how much and which method is best. I'd recommend a backpack sprayer with a fan tip for wide patterns.. Spray arround knee height and try to keep your spray pattern consistent.. overlap alittle but not too much so you get good coverage.

      I have the same question. Would it be better to kill the clumping fescue first or can we just rent a sod cutter and take it out?

    • @Pissgremlin5964
      @Pissgremlin5964 6 років тому

      Amber Deleo a sod cutter still leaves behind roots that will grow back.

    • @JoeLinux2000
      @JoeLinux2000 6 років тому

      Depending on how much you have, you can use full strength Roundup in a small needle glue or oiler bottle that can be purchased to Hobby Stores. You can put one drop on each blade, and it will kill it. Fescue is really a problem grass unless you have a horse pasture. Obviously this one blade at a time is tedious but it is selective, and does work if you have patience and not too much Fescue. If you have a lot, you might consider killing it all with Roundup, and then replacing the sod.

    • @JoeLinux2000
      @JoeLinux2000 6 років тому

      AD. you have to kill it with Roundup through the leaf or blade. If you dig it out first there is not enough plant left to kill, and it will come back through the roots remaining in the ground.

    So, if the crab grass is germinating (spreading the seed) now, August 31st, I would use the professional product called "drive"? And what will that do to my Bermuda grass I have been trying to grow?
    What needs to be done to begin getting more of my Bermuda grass to grow thicker after using the "drive"? After using the drive to kill the crab grass, when should more of my desired grass seed be thrown out to try to get more of the desired grass to grow?

    I just did a lawn renovation. My lawn was 26 yrs old and needed redone. I killed the lawn first with round up. And left it almost a month to make sure it was dead. I then rented a sod cutter and removed the existing sod base and hauled it away. The bare ground was as clean as whistle and no further weeds or grass appeared over the next week. I had a tiller rented as well and tilled up the base so the new seed would have a good base to attach to. I added one tandem load of top soil from the same company that I rented the sod cutter, tiller, and roller from. We spread out the soil and noticed some dead grass pieces in the top soil of which my experienced landscaping help had never seen. We pulled out most of what we could out of this new top soil. The lawn was spread out and rolled a starter fertilizer was laid down and mixed in along with Scott’s turf builder sunny mix/ bluegrass with water tech coating as we are going through a drought. The seed performed as expended and appeared evenly in about 10 days. Everything seemed to be going great. Then all these bladed like weeds stared appearing. I looked it up and it was crab grass. Apparently I purchased contaminated soil. As I now have more weeds than I did with the old lawn. I will have to have this bad soil removed and start over as my goal was to be starting with nice clean slate of grass and not a mess of weeds. My neighbour purchased the same top soil from the same company and he now also has to redo his lawn as he has the exact same crab grass weeds.

    I don't understand why people like to mow their yard so low ,especially tall fescue ,that was the problem in the last yard ,mowing too low ,and not fertilizing well.. Here in California we like to do pre-emergent herbicide in February, because in March is already 70 degrees. I like to do fertilizing 1 mont before the Dimention 270. Is only a opinion.

    • @foskten10
      @foskten10 8 років тому +1

      +Cobra 03 Same here. I've seen people absolutely scalp their grass and not only is it really bad for the health of the lawn, it just looks bad. Some people don't have the first clue how to care for their lawn and to make it look great but strangely in their minds they're doing it right and everyone else is wrong!

    • @flawlessstrategy9972
      @flawlessstrategy9972 7 років тому +1

      Sadly, my neighbors do that and even the landscapers they hire do that. They scalp it down to the dirt and destroy the roots. They also like to mow across into my property too where I try to keep my St. Augustine at least 3.5 inches. They are probably like, "This lazy guy here... his grass is so tall, he must never mow it. I'll just send him a message."
      I guess if you can buy a riding mower and a trailer, you're all of a sudden a "landscaper" lol. Then they mow it down to the dirt and kill the grass. smh.
      Others are just too lazy to mow so they think if they mow it as low as possible they can wait a month before mowing it again... lol
      Then one of my next-door neighbors has the most epic sea of 1000's of yellow dandelions. He is a health nut who walks every morning at dawn but is too lazy to mow... huh? When my lawn is healthy and at nearly 4 inches, the dandelions can't even grow in my yard, no matter how many he has.

    I hope some advice can be shared on this old video, but we recently moved into our home, and it seems that the vast majority of green in our yard is crabgrass, or that dense fescue stuff. The back half of our front yard is bare because there are 2 oak trees that we finally trimmed up to get some sun to the areas. is there a simple fix for this crab infestation, or is a lawn reno needed? any advice would be great. thank you! PS. we live in SOUTH TEXAS, border town, so when LCN mentions "Frost" I laugh. Its hot almost year round, and thinking of going with St. Augustin grass, that's what our neighbor recommended. It is a good idea to buy the pre-emergent early in the spring. Once they run out of it at the store, they do not restock it until the following spring. I have had very good luck with Scott's Weed n Feed with HALTS. I buy the 15,000 square feet bag, and only use 1/3 of it at a time, wait two weeks and use another 1/3, wait two weeks and use the final 1/3.

    Oh yea, i just checked today. My lawn is 80% Crab Grass. What do I do? WHAT DO I DO?! ITS ALL CRAB GRASS. I'm poor and had a crappy lawn mower with a bad motor that just chopped up and dump the grass with literally none going into the grass catch. This was before I started to take a serious look at my lawn and study up on the things. Over time, this process turned majority of my lawn into crab grass. I didn't notice because since it was all crab grass, it looked normal and it was the normal grass that was out of place, now I'm worried because my lawn is encroaching on my neighbor's lawn and thats rude. I'm too poor for chemicals that may or may not work and to even nuke my entire lawn i'd still need chemicals. I'm at a loss, my budget is tight as it is and the crab grass is tearing my family apart. Our property ajoins a HOA common ground area. The HOA doesn't contract for turf treatment, other than cutting approximately every 3-4 weeks, if then. The problem is what from the street appears to be grass, is actually every conceivable weed known to NE Florida. The HOA states they have no obligation to treat these areas, only to maintain the appearance, i.e. green and mowed. In the meantime, all of these weeds either by the mowers, natural encroachment or just bad luck continues to migrate onto our property. The lawn/pest control service we use haven't been able to control this infestation, if the HOA isn't going to treat their property. Other than moving, which is an option, what can you offer as a possible solution? The Board unfortunately is controlled by northern carpetbaggers. Their solution is much like Joe Bidens: just walk away when you don't or won't answer the questions. Thanks!

    Great video - one of the better ones out there. But none of these videos address the biggest question. What do I do after I kill all the crabgrass??
    I used a post emergent and killed massive areas of crabgrass. Now I just have dead crabgrass in my lawn. It’s way too hot to reseed right now. Will the existing turf naturally spread on its own into the dead crabgrass areas? Or did I just stop the spread and will have dead clumps in my yard the rest of summer.
    Not one video on UA-cam actually talks about what matters. Which is how to get your turf lawn back after killing the weeds!!
    Someone please help out. I’m willing to dig it out and just patch it with EZ seed I guess but that’s a ton of work for how much area I need to cover.

    Lawn is littered with Clover and Crab Grass and other weeds, have a very hard time growing grass and every fall around now end up with big bare yellow patches. Was new sod 4 years ago and it never really took off, biggest issue is watering because of the size ( approx 5000 sq feet) do I focus on thickening the lawn first or tackle the weeds first? Or go at it both simultaneously ? Thanks for any help advice you can give.

    Is this crabgrass? I planted Zoysia and these are popping up... cant tell if its zoysia spreading or if its crabgrass? imgur.com/a/MV43g Also a side question, does crabgrass die in warm climates in the winter? Because everything says "first frost" kills it, but what about places where there is never a frost and winters get to like 50, maybe 40 at night during the coldest part of the year (such as Southern California).

My lawn looks beautiful in the spring, dark and thick and then when the heat comes in it weakens greatly and this weed pops up all over my lawn overnight. It's so tall and it takes over the whole lawn. Omg. Help! My landscaper only mows it but it grows back overnight and is fully grown by day 2 and my lawn looks crazy!

    Good details about crabgrass.. I have 95% of them in my yard taking over whatever grass I grew last year. I’ve started pulling them out now as there is no other natural or non toxic method. There’s Going to be a lot of patches in the yard. I want to re-seed those areas making sure no more crab grass come out next year. Any tips on how to stop them from the get go? And if I should use natural fertilizers for rest of the lawn? Thanks!!

    Lawn care nut need your help!!! So out here in Sunny California we're still under drought restrictions. Looks like no one is following the restrictions but me. I use to be the envy of the neighborhood. My grass is shot. Some parts are still green but most still trying to service. Crap grass taking over, these thick patches of tall fescue growing randomly. I watered the lawn for 30mins using a oscillating sled sprinkler and noticed the area that's dying slowly, the soil/dirt is hard and I believe the water is not penetrating to the roots. The part that's green was nice and soaked. I dug up the soil and only about 1/4 of top soil was wet while the other end was great. What can I do? Should I dig up the bad spots and restart over? Should I aerate the lawn? What can I do? By the way, it's sod (tall fescue)

I want to be super successful with this company because i am a beast at sales but i just started a week ago and i am so confused and overwhelmed with how much there is to learn lol. Have you heard of hillenmeyer lawn care services/mosquito authority been around 180 years? I work for their company they started about 10yrs ago called Weed Man. We have our own propitiatory 65% slow release granular fertilizer your the pro so im sure i dont need to explain but anyways would u mind if i asked u a few questions that i have regarding certain terms and how to approach the customer. And if i wondering why i would come to youtube and not my manger it’s because i went through training and am confused as ever their fine with me going above and beyond to do what it takes to learn my industry !

    Question. In April I tilled the entire lawn and seeded a fescue bluegrass mix. It's now July 3rd and it's now a beautiful green carpet except an area near my neighbors house and it's covered in crap grass. If I spray and just expect the orange color your talking about, can I reseed in sept? When will the orange go away?

    My neighbor has crab grass all over their yard. Every time I get rid of the crab grass in my yard, the seeds from their lawn blow over into my lawn and the cycle starts all over again. Now I know I need to grow my lawn thicker. My back yard is thick and green, it isn't so easy in my front lawn. We are experiencing a doubt and a 105+ degree summer right now in Texas. We are on water restriction because of it.
