Thank you for this video. In the before/after pictures, all they did was follow your instructions? No sod or plugs were placed on any of the yards? Trying to understand if I need to resod first. The yard looks bad and I didn't think that there was a chance of it looking good without resoding.

You need to have people slow while driving by, so this includes front gardens. A mixture of perennial and annual flowers, in pots are a must.

Me too!!! I have beautiful sod in the front, but they threw seed and hay on the sides and back and now it looks awful.
Me too, bought our first home last fall and suddenly I'm really into wanting a great lawn.
We bought in the suburbs, so lots of single detached homes with awesome lawns and gardens....even the Christmas and Halloween lights in the neighborhood were great...with a subtle competition vibe for lawns, gardens, and holiday decor. (Its a healthy competition though, like for kids its awesome Halloween decorations with haunted houses for kids.
Still my lawn is not going so great. Its hard to get decent herbicide products in Canada.

Quick tips on Scotts (drop) spreaders: use the recommended drop rate # as a *starting* place. It's almost never been right in the 3 decades I've used them. Fortunately, I typically find I'm putting it down WAY lighter than expected, so I do a second perpendicular application. I'll also adjust my drop rate so it's heavier along fence lines & driveways/sidewalks, where you're most likely to get invasions by certain weeds.. and then lighter in areas where I don't typically see weeds year-over-year.
Always best, regardless, to set your drop rate, fill the hopper half-full or so, test the rate over a driveway so you can see how much is coming out, adjust if desired, do the yard a bit, decide if you're dropping at the desired rate by how fast the hopper is emptying, re-adjust, refill, and continue.
Smart also to clean your drop spreader ahead (and allow time to air dry) *and* test the wheels, cable, and drop door mechanism BEFORE loading it with material to be sure it works. Chemicals *will* clog and rust it over time... some worse than others.
I’m so glad I saw your video. I am going to try this. I don’t have a good lawn, too much weeds. I literally for months sat on my grass and picked this horrible weed with purple flowers and a root that looks like a carrot. Neighbors had to laugh. Now it’s everywhere. I don’t have a husband to help so it’s just me. I pray this works. I was going to hire professional lawn but I changed my mind. Thank you.

Funny! My brother is obsessed w/ his lawn. Even during the drought we here in MD were not allowed to wash cars, etc. but he still used his irrigation watering system set for 3 am. He had the ONLY green lush lawn in his subdivision - he thought no one would know what he was doing, ha! He told me he used to dream about his lawn. Okay, I'm not that far gone! I think we got the lawn OCD from my father. He's 92 and still wants a good looking lawn. I got him a lawn service (and paid for it myself) - two of them, he wasn't pleased with either! Hope there's lush lawns up in heaven otherwise he'll be ticked off!

I own this spreader and I did (still do) run out of product even though I bought the right size bag. I think my problem is the overlap and keeping track of where I already spread. I have a lot to learn, and I think I can learn it here! I had as much fun reading comments as I did watching the video. You obviously attract the right kind of viewers. These folks are so funny!

I used a setting of #5 with Scotts 3-1 and panicked because I read online reviews saying to use setting #2. I just didn't water it at all and fortunately it rained after 3 days. After a week it showed weeds dying but it left me feeling like it wasn't enough. Finally after 2 weeks my lawn looked amazing. All weeds were gone and I have grass seeding on top. I've grown fond of lawn work and appreciate great lawns when driving past houses. I wish I'd watched this before venturing the lawn aisle. 😅
I love the sign in your shop that says"Weeds will not defeat me!" We have been in our house in Houston over 20 years and I am still at war with the weeds in my backyard! Especially something called "nut grass". I love the beginners guide video. Thanks for all of your advice. I am a new follower!

I came here looking for help with my lawn (which you greatly helped with) but I stayed because your channel rocks! Keep it up man
Over 45 years, I've owned 5 homes and have always enjoyed taking care of my lawns. Most of them, I actually planted from grass seed after installing (yep I did it trenching and all) an irrigation system! For what it's worth, here are a few of my recommendations. 1) Watering. I will say at the forefront that if you want a successful lawn, you absolutely must have an irrigation system that regularly waters your lawn at 0500 in Spring/Fall (in cooler climates) as trying to do it by hand just doesn't work! In Winter, most grasses go dormant and depending on where you live, the seasonal rains normally provide enough natural irrigation. Big Summer watering tip here that I learned from a wonderfully skilled and very valued Mexican landscaper I knew in San Diego - if you live in a hot arid climate like So Cal, be sure to water your lawn at 7pm in the Spring/Summer - yes 7pm so the water can really sink in as the sun will literally sublimate the water out if you water in the early morning! 2) Fertilizing. Not being a fan of broadcast spreaders, I've always used a Scotts drop spreader because it's easy to align the arrows on the back top of the spreader body with the spreader wheel track on the grass and using Scotts TB weed/feed, you set the recommended drop setting and away you go. Aligning the spreader body arrows with the wheel tracks on your lawn is critical, otherwise you will get the dreaded paler stripes due to inadequate coverage! I fertilize quarterly because it lasts about 3 months with regular irrigation and do an extra application in the Fall to harden the lawn before Winter. 3) Annual Aeration/Overseeding. The other critical thing that I have always done is to do an annual aeration (I've rented the aerator from HD but it's really easier to hire this out for $100 or so) and then overseed with fresh - yes fresh grass seed - via my same Scotts drop spreader in both the Fall and early Spring - this makes a huge difference!!! 4) Soil pH. Get a soil pH meter (they're cheap), test your lawns soil pH, then adjust with pelletized lime via your spreader - do it as it really works! 5) Soil Building. I also semiannually apply granular dolomite and gypsum which conditions your soil by breaking down compacted clay through ion exchange and causes excess sodium salts to leach out. Both apps are nonburning and nonirritating! 6) Green-up. Got a special event coming up and/or you want a deeper emerald green lawn - apply Ironite and you'll get it! Anyway, there you go - many decades of successful lawncare distilled down into 6 must do steps with all the components being available at your friendly big box stores. Remember one thing - none of this will happen if you stay on the couch and it will take you 30 or so minutes to do the separate fertilizer, grass seed, and soil conditioner applications - which equates to 1.5 hours per calender quarter! So put the application schedule on your computer/smartphone outlook calendar to remind you, get out there and do it, and reap the satisfaction you will get from knowing your lawn will grow and thrive. Good luck!
Will the Scotts weed and feed take out large patches of clovers, crabgrass and dandelions?
@@izzyh.3581 As a pre-emergent fertilizer, Scotts is okay - but it's far better to get specific herbicide preparations for those - mix them up in either a hose-end sprayer or a 1 to 3-gallon Chapin sprayer for large areas - thats what I do. You can get the herbicides on Do-It-Yourself Pest Control (DYPC). For clover - I use Tenacity concentrate as it's both a pre/post- emergent and also mix it with a surfactant (also buy at DYPC) so the stuff sticks to the clover. Also be sure to distinquish between clover and sedge because they look similar and require specific herbicides. For dandelions, its really best to get rid of the entire weed via the Fiskars standup weedpuller - it's easy and it literally pulls them out of the ground root and all - it's actually satisfying to see them pulled out! I pulled about 600 of them out of my neglected lawn when we bought our place here in Aberdeen, WA. For normally isolated crabgrass, get one of the spray bottle preps at Home Depot, spot treat them, and then rake them out and reseed with fresh grass seed.
@@stevejensen3471 thank you for all the information and I'll be sure to check them all out. Do you recommend doing all these same chemicals and procedures for commercial use? You see, I plan on making a 1gallon 30% vinegar/2lbs of sodium chloride and some soap as a "near organic" herbicide. From my understanding its indiscriminate and will kill most plants. That's my first concern, my second is the fact that it adds salt to the soil. Minimum- spot areas. Maximum- giant 10x10 areas such as my backyard. My last concern is my equipment. I don't want to ruin my backpack sprayer and can't find much info on how it will affect the polymers and metals used. I do like that you stated dolomite and gypsum will leach out sodiums but I wonder how much they'll counterbalance. I plan on using this concoction on more mulch styled lawns, concrete walk ways, and rock paths but also for spot spraying flower beds. Is this all just a bad idea? I don't like the thought of round up causing cancer or any other chemical that can cause it. Also I'm thinking about pet friendly and eco conscious clients. I'm sorry if I dropped a bomb on you but I'd love to hear what you have to say :).

@@izzyh.3581 Yes you can do these applications from a commercial perspective - what I do is exactly what the pro's do. In fact, the lawn care guys who take care of the place next door came over and asked me how I got my grass so darn green and weed-free! I surprisingly looked at him and said "well regular water and fertilizer - it's that simple - oh and a friendly dose of ironite!" :) Your vinegar/salt/soap solution will be fine for a Chapin widemouth sprayer as the seals and gaskets on those are either polyurethane or viton. I'd advise picking up a 1-gallon Chapin as again that's what I do and the convenience is more than worth it! I actually have 3 of them - a 1, 2, and 3-gallon - all widemouth so they are easy to clean!
I have been working on lawn maintenance for eight years in Hong Kong and still found something new from this video. That’s a great and useful video not just for beginners.
We are not beginner lawn care people but you have shredded some light as to what product could work ( depending on your weed situation). Had no idea that weed/feed products can contain both pre and post-emergent chemicals if we forgot to put them down at the proper time. Enjoyed the video!!

I always do my weed and feed by the first week of March, preferably after a light snow, so that it can be wet when applied. If I don't get it by the first week of March I will have dandelions.
I aerated two days ago, applied Tenacity yesterday, and got 25 lbs of black beauty ultra that I was going to spread today, but I’m looking at 93 today at a mile elevation in Wyoming. I want to get the seed down as my yard is a mess. I had cottonwood trees planted in 1977...85 feet tall with roots that wrapped my sprinkler lines in a knot. Finally got an arborist to drop these huge trees, I removed the downfall and now I have a weed covered yard that is scorched. I’m trying to do this right, so I appreciate the video. I’m not trying to bulldoze this project because I’m invested in it now. Thanks for the info. Thanks for making this video! You’ve instilled an insane amount of confidence and motivation in me to finally, after 8 years of home ownership, taking on my 12,000 sq ft of weed covered lawn. Measured it out the other day and created a proper lawn map. Also picked up the same brand bag of 3 in 1, and it now also has an insecticide in it. Watering is 48 hours on that, just waiting on the weather to cooperate and give me 48 hours of no rain. It’s mid 80s for the next 10 days and I can’t wait to THROW ‘ER DOWN! I will also be wearing two pairs of sunglasses while I do it, in your honor.

I’ve only used the 3 in 1 on my lawn for one year but it looks so much better on year two . I’ve watered , fertilized , and aerated my property and the grass is finally looking like a real yard . I’m an amateur but I’m thinking one more year and it will be looking A plus . My yard was full of English ivy that I had to remove , till the root bed up , put out fresh dirt and sod . Been working on it for 3 years and after seeing this last summer I’m on my way

Once I started being proactive, my lawn started looking great with minimal effort and cost.
My program includes:
Seed and soil in fall and early spring
Humic and fulvic acid Liquid
Liquid iron
Sea kelp
Hose sprayer
Grub control
Weed b gone as needed
Granular Slow release fertilizer
This has always worked for me and is easy to apply. I used to pay a lawn care company 6x the cost of doing it myself.

Consider this a blessing in disguise. I have 1/2 acre. The amount of mowing, watering, weeding, fertilizing, and sprinkler repair is mind boggling.
Yes consider that a blessing cheap. On a acre lot. Just bought the house. Bermuda where previous owner used trudgen. Bleh! But my lawn has so much crab grass annual blue grass and other weeds. It’s going to take me this year to get my plan right I think. Budget wise I don’t have the money to wage all out war this year. But I’m doing spot treatments laid Scott’s 3 in one in , Lowe’s torn bag discount! Is awesome. Going to buy his guide. And pick and choose on a few chemicals to mix and hand spray. Literally just laid the 3 in one. I’ll be happy if I see minimal results. In a few weeks.

Keep in mind you're spreading loads of toxic chemicals. It's not worth it. Put yours, your kid's and dog's health first. Think about what you're doing to our water supply too. I'll keep looking for someone who provides natural lawn care (is there such a channel?) the yard might not look perfect but maybe we all need to get used to less-than-perfect lawns for the sake of our family's and the planet's health.
