@turfmechanic is their a difference between grubs and lawn worms or are they the same? Can I appy an application in the northeast early November (currently). I have noticed several lawn worms recently.
I have a friend that used nematodes. Tiny bugs that can be applied via a water-borne sprayer. Easy to apply and the grubs were gone within days and the lawn rebounded within a couple of weeks.
In the Southeast if we have grubs we get moles and voles that literally tunnel all over the yards. It is a disaster. Thanks for the educational and detailed Video!!!
I thought the moles after the earthworms was destroying my grass. I have earthworms by the handfuls everywhere I dig. Today was reseeding and patching spots in the lawn. Found a huge unattached patch of grass and one white grub. Guess the moles are eating grubs and earthworms. Had a beautiful lawn and it is destroyed .
Thanks for the video. I have been struggling with my St Augustine lawn for 10 years, this spring realized I have been in denial of grub worms. I have been using a professional company to fertilize and until about 10 years ago the yard looked pretty good. They never recommended any treatment. My next door neighbor recommended Triazicide. I am desperate, I have large bald spots in my yard, re-sodding annually with Bermuda or Zoysia trying anything. I put the Triazicide out just before a nice rain, the next morning I had 46 (yes, I counted them) grub worms crawling on to my drive way and dead, many more coming out of the lawn. The next day I had another 30. Over the next few days the number decreased but would still see one or two every now and then. I don’t doubt your recommendation but the Triazicide seemed to be very effective. I would not have believed it if I didn’t see it myself.
This stuff does work. I had a major infestation, 5 grubs a tiny shovel full every time I dug a hole. I ripped up big patches of grass to clear it for new seed, put this stuff down, found dozens dead the next morning. I even used it again a few weeks later and found more dead grubs popped up.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge on this topic. I have a lot of those beetles that turn into grubs. Can I treat the lawn with grub killer this month. My lawn has a bunch of dead grass.
I actually bought this stuff and applied it to my lawn last night before I saw your video. This morning I found that the grubs that were visible were dead. I thought Triazicide didn’t work on grubs. What gives?
I bought some Caravan G before I even knew of what to buy honestly. Dual insecticide and fungicide. Thanks for this video. With new turf wasn’t sure when to put it being a new lawn. I’m seeing a lot of locust right now.
I just used a 2000 square foot tarp cover the lawn from 10pm to 8am in the last two weeks of June so grubs won’t lay eggs in my lawn. I did it for seven years and my lawn has no grub problems at all.
I bought the cheap stuff early in the summer when it was apparent I had a problem. $5 a bag on clearance and it's got a picture of a grub on it! Didn't work, and lost huge patches of lawn. I bought the 24 hr killer, reseeded, and the lawn is pristine. I can't believe they sell that other garbage.
Thank you, thank you. We had just applied the stuff that doesn’t work so I guess we have more money to spend. I would also like to try nematodes but now that we’ve put down the insecticide I’m afraid they will just die. Do you have any idea how long we would have to wait to apply nematodes?
Hello, I just aerated and over seeded my lawn. Second week of September. Grass is coming good. Big thing i notice. The skunks are digging up the lawn big time. "Grubs" so what would I need to throw down this late in the season. Thanks!
Active ingredient in Sevin SL will kill them off now. I don't use that product personally but if you're going to kill grubs might as well do it now rather than in early spring after more damage happens. Takes a couple weeks to really kill them off if memory serves correct.
I'd like to clarify and get your opinion. It is the last day on November here in Minnesota. I know I had/have a grub problem and want to get rid of them as soon as possible this Spring as we have a wedding in our back yard next year. If I am understanding correctly, I should out down a grub killer this Spring (Trichlorfon or Carbaryl). How early can I out these down? Then, should I treat the lawn with Grub ex (Chlorantranlilprole) later in the year as well? I need to get rid of these grubs as the coon and skunks have really done a job on my lawn along with the grub damage. Wedding is in September. Your suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!!
If you put either of those active ingredients down around April 1 they will kill many adult grubs after they wake up from winter. Since you are so far north I doubt you'll get much benefit out of applying earlier than that. By mid may you can they apply grub ex for prevention of any stragglers that hatch in summer.
Sir, your lawn looks spotless without weeds. I have tried three different applications to kill the many different weeds in my yard. Can you share your secret please?
just put down bioadvanced 24 hr grub killer plus, with remnants of hurricane Ian, didn't have to water lawn rain took care of it. found out we had a grub infestation because our Lab dog all of a sudden was not coming back into the house when called & found out she was finding and eating grubs. (which did make her sick, throwing up, vet visit bc she was eating so many of them, she's better now) only been at house for 4 yrs, never a grub problem before. my question is, after product is down, all the grubs have come to the surface, and we did have infestation, how do we get rid of the dead grubs on the lawn, so that it is safe for our dog to return to the lawn? with the storm, not many birds out. do we rake them up? location near mason-dixon line, Pa.
How about Imidacloprid products like Merit 0.5 or Bifenthrin like Talstar xtra. Thinking specifically of cranefly larvae From looking at studies, both seem to do well. Thoughts?
I've never looked into cranefly larvae before so that would take me some time to feel comfortable making suggestions on...however my experience with imidacloprid (researching grub control specifically) is that it is a strong "bug pre-emergent" that kills a lot of beneficial things along with the target pest. My "not-educated-enough" thoughts on Bifenthrin is that it attacks bugs on the surface of the soil well which is the same reason why it doesn't hit grubs because they feed below the soil in the grass root zone. I don't focus a lot on bug control other than grubs so this is not a strong area for me. I tend to shy away from most insecticides but it's an area I do want to study a lot on during the off season because it is very important to many of my viewers.
@@TurfMechanic Here is one of the studies I checked out that breaks down a variety of active ingredients and products www.hort.cornell.edu/turf/shortcourse/crane_fly_insecticides.pdf
Hi, thanks for the info. do you know if you can use these in containers which is where my grub problem is, at the moment I am just digging around and picking them out but I don't think I get them all this way and this also disturbs the roots somewhat. I think the wild life deal with any in the grass (birds, boar and wild mink etc.)
That's terrible! What did you treat with? I tend to recommend people use GrubEx in early May to prevent grubs and then BioAdvanced Grub Killer Plus in Sept/Oct to kill any grubs that weren't properly prevented before they do significant damage. The Spectracide bag from this video is something I don't ever recommend for grubs.
i'm confused after watching your video... i originally thought i should put down grub control in the fall... then i hear that it should be done in may... now i'm entirely not sure... i want to prevent them before they become a problem..
Grubs usually lay eggs in June and they hatch in July. Most products that kill the grub larvae in July are safer for the environment and don't kill as many desirable bugs and kill the grub larvae better. These products need to be applied in May and June usually to work their best though and they are considered to be prevention products. Anything you apply now will have to be a chemical designed to kill adults grubs, these are harsher chemicals.
This spring I put down Anderson’s Duocide. My yard had never been treated and was full of the little grubs! So I don’t think I need anything this fall. Thanks for the video. Tom
you are most likely spot on; that product contains carbaryl which will kill the mature grubs in earlier spring before they pupate stopping the majority of the lifecycle. Starting next year in mid to late Spring I'd recommend light apps of grub preventative so that you never have to kill them as a curative again. Well done!
What do you think about St Gabriel milky spore? In particular, I was considering getting the granular form. I have some brown spots from grubs. Would it be a good idea to apply now? In the spring? Both? Thanks.
What can I use for my flower beds? I have always used GrubX & needless to say, it's NOT working. I was planting my Fall flowers & bulbs & I have been inundated by these bastards! Can you please help me?
I'm not saying anything about the people who live in those countries, but why does everything invasive come from Asia? Bamboo and Japanese Knotweed are extremely damaging to homes and other structures. The bugs are damaging everything. Blah.
I've used Lawnbox's Grubout for years in late June to early July as a grub preventative however that product has been discontinued I believe. I haven't purchased a replacement yet since I had some leftover Grubout from prior years that I was able to use this year but I'm starting to advise people to buy GrubGone on Amazon as a replacement since it uses the same BT ingredient and is obviously available nationwide. I gotta say this though, BT will not do anything substantial to the lawn or grubs if you apply it in the Fall, winter, or Spring. It's only properly used to kill grub larvae just after they hatch from eggs in the very early summer (late June and July). Even then the product degrades in the soil very fast, you get about 10 days per application before it stops working. Best practice is to apply multiple low doses of BT every 10 days or so spanning end of June through late July. This time of year you have to put up with grubs or decide to kill them with harsh chems. Here's an aff link to GrubGone; I'll most like be featuring it on the channel next Spring but I don't actually own it quite yet: www.amazon.com/Phyllom-BioProducts-grubGONE-Organic-Control/dp/B0CBL8NWLX/?tag=turfmechanicyt-20
I have a terrible mole problem this summer and read that to get rid of the moles I need to get rid of the grubs. At the hardware store the other day the salesperson picked up that very bag that you show does not work and told me to use it. I bought it, and came on here to see if it would be bad to kill all the insects in my lawn (which I why I have avoided using chemicals up to this point). All that to say this: it’s September in Long Island, so the weather is about to cool down. Should I order what you mentioned works and use it now? And again in the Spring? Two times per year? Or something else?
Oh yeah, I stand by this video, the two products mentioned in the description will kill the grubs. You don't have to use the affiliate links either, just head to your local home and garden center and look for the correct active ingredients used in those products. Sept is a good time to get ontop of the grub problem as early as possible, you could hit it again in April if you feel you need to then go into prevention mode by may and you'll never have a grub problem again...and hopefully you will have a significantly less bad mole problem too.
I have the same issue with similair soil.. they driving me crazy. They are mostly on the edges of sidewalks and driveway. I thought they were ants at first. But im still clueless
So it’s March now and I’ve never treated for grubs but I started having a grub problem last year. Should I treat for grubs and not bother with using a preventative now until fall?
If you started having a problem last year then the grubs are going to be eating away at your grass roots this spring causing die off so if it were me I'd probably apply a grub killer now and then a preventer in late may to early June. That would stop all issues in their tracks and then you could go back to annual or every couple year preventative treatments in late Spring for the years going forward. Trichlorfon will kill a majority of them now before they go underground to lay eggs. You can get that in Bioadvanced on Amazon and local big box stores. Here's a direct link: amzn.to/3K0cST1 preventative I use is LawnBox bt product as its a more natural control but its pricey. Cheaper options are Scott's GrubEx which you can probably find anywhere but that needs to go down in May as it takes a long while to move in the soil. Good luck!
I have a bag of spectracide... What should I do with it now if it's not gonna be useful? Should I just save it for next year spring to use it on other bugs?
wait to see if you have any other bug problems and then check for application instructions to best address that specific bug. If you store the stuff well it should be good to use for a long time to come.
Really interested in the organic options and how they work. I'm a beekeeper and generally have to time any insecticide treatment so that it's either too cold for the bees or after sunset when they go in the hives.
Hi Brian! Fellow Brian here. I put down GrubEx in the spring, but I had severe brown spots during the summer (and still now), which I thought was just due to heat & drought. I recently started planting some shrubs (turning part of lawn into a garden bed) and I found grubs in the soil. What should I do? I’m in CT.
GrubEx needs to be applied pretty early to prevent grubs as it's very slowly mobile in the soil. Some people apply in late April or early May to get maximum benefit from it. If you applied in June then it probably only partially worked...regardless you probably have few grubs in the lawn than you would had otherwise. If you think the grubs are damaging things a lot then go ahead and apply something like the products mentioned in the video now otherwise wait until late April and do the GrubEx again and shoot for year over year improvement. Last thing to note is that you probably wouldn't have seen grub damage in the lawn in August, they just weren't mature enough. by end of Sept to October that's when you start noticing grub spots in the lawn. Thanks for watching Brian! Best spelling of the name btw! :D
Its easy to tell if its grub damage. Just give the grass a light tug. If it pull right out with no roots and no effort you most likely have insect damage
There's truth to that one. The moles won't be eliminated for good but they'll definitely be a much bigger problem in a lawn where there are grubs. Getting grubs under control in March/April and then applying a grub prevention product in May or June will go a long way to helping your mole problem.
nah, you might have damage but it's still most likely too early to see full lawns dying off. That's why intervention with the right product is important.
I have 6 acres there are a bunch of dead spots in my lawn because of the grubs, the skunks and I think deer are migrating to the dead grass and digging all of them up and eating them at night. I let nature do what it does.
Spectracide Triazicide Insect Killer For Lawns Granules kills, per the label, dung beetle grubs, Japanese beetle grubs, green June beetle grubs). Grubs are healthy in lawns? Grubs damage a lawn by feeding on the roots of the grass.
To be technical you are super-duper correct, the grubs will pupate and emerge as beetles and then the female beetles burrow down to lay eggs which hatch as grub larva...that's why applying a grub killer in May just doesn't work; you have to hit them before they pupate which is earlier in the Spring. Thanks for bringing up the full story on this one.
@@TurfMechanic would you apply it with your preemergent? I haven had any grub damage in years but I have been seeing them every time I dig. I expect there to be some no matter what I plan to maybe try nematodes or bt in the spring.
@@vincentlabruzzo5368 totally a personal choice, if it was me and I wasn't seeing lawn damage in the fall then I'd probably not apply any grub killer, if I wasn't seeing damage in late April I wouldn't apply at all either but I would then apply bt in June or GrubEx (chlorantraniliprole) around may 20 to prevent future infestations. Bt won't stop everything but it will prevent infestations which is the ultimate goal. Grub killer like grubex at the same date as preemergent seems like good timing though if you go that route and it's way less harmful to the bugs we do want in our yards.
not to be forward or anything but I did mention two products that work in the video and in the video description: ► Trichlorfon: BioAdvanced 24-Hour Grub Killer Plus: www.amazon.com/BioAdvanced-700740M-24-Hour-Granules-Standard/dp/B001H1GQ54/?tag=turfmechanicyt-20 ► Carbaryl: Sevin SL: shrsl.com/3q4ko god bless bye

Here's a direct link: amzn.to/3K0cST1 preventative I use is LawnBox bt product as its a more natural control but its pricey. Cheaper options are Scott's GrubEx which you can probably find anywhere but that needs to go down in May as it takes a long while to move in the soil. Good luck!
ALL grubs are beetle larvae of some form. Beetles lay eggs not grubs as you stated.
Milky spore. Expense up front but safer and if used properly lasts longer.
we have almost all kind if weeds since used this stuff i think it as weed unwanted kind of seeds and true works only for a while
I have a bag of spectracide...
When is it too cold for bees

Great video….Thanks
i put down 2 bags of everything just to cover all the bases
So sue them for false labeling. That's illegal.
It kills "ants" on contact. The rest is preventive.
Will the product seven work
Sevin sl should work as a curative application
@@TurfMechanic I may just wait until the spring then! Thanks for taking the time to respond!
Very true. Big patches just sitting on top of the ground
@@wandaherring7526 where you based?
i have mole problem. and they say grub is the food they looking for and killing my lawn
I have mole problems. I've been told if I get rid of grubs I will get rid of moles. Old Wives Tale or?
There's truth to that one. The moles won't be eliminated for good but they'll definitely be a much bigger problem in a lawn where there are grubs. Getting grubs under control in March/April and then applying a grub prevention product in May or June will go a long way to helping your mole problem.
So far in the season, if you have grub issues, then your lawn is already dead:)
nah, you might have damage but it's still most likely too early to see full lawns dying off. That's why intervention with the right product is important.
I have 6 acres there are a bunch of dead spots in my lawn because of the grubs, the skunks and I think deer are migrating to the dead grass and digging all of them up and eating them at night. I let nature do what it does.
Dawn dish none grub killing works. Use dawn dish soap
How do you use it? Formula?
Did kill the army worms tho, I went heavy
I was going to apply grub ex today. Lol
lol, totally wrong season for that one!
Spectracide Triazicide Insect Killer For Lawns Granules kills, per the label, dung beetle grubs, Japanese beetle grubs, green June beetle grubs).
Grubs are healthy in lawns? Grubs damage a lawn by feeding on the roots of the grass.
They wouldnt be there if the lawn wasnt healthy.
@@mattk8810 Grubs feed on grass roots (and organic matter in the soil), causing sections of grass in the lawn to die.
bio advance for the win. The same people who make telynol and meth. haha!
Lots of good info except that grubs don't lay eggs.
I expect there to be some no matter what
I plan to maybe try nematodes or bt in the spring.
Are grubs what is making my lawn bumpy?
👍🏻
I got you! :)
Give me the poison 😊
hehe :)
I get ants…
