*Dear good gentlemen of UA-cam* you can get in contact with me, support me directly, and find all my socials/store/etc thru my Tazet profile: www.tazet.com/foureyes Let’s get into some Mustang stuff (assuming you watched the whole video)... The Mustang’s current engine was built for boost, but so far I’ve just been trying to squeeze as much NA power out of it as possible, which is kind of silly considering it has a compression ratio of < 10. So here’s the grandmaster plan for the Mustang: -- We’re going to install the Vortech supercharger mentioned in the video (the head unit’s good for 950 hp) -- While we install that, tune it, race it etc, we’ll build a high compression (12.5) NA motor on the side. When that engine is ready, we’ll do an engine swap and find out what a 3-valve can do when it has similar displacement and compression to a gen-3 coyote engine. -- Then we’ll refresh the low-compression engine and install as much of the turbo kit on the engine as possible while it’s out of the car, then we’ll drop in the turbo engine and full send. -- Somewhere betwixt all this I may try to install a sequential, if it’s not crazy expensive. All that being said, the next video will be about putting the Viper back together, hearing its new cam, tuning it, and racing a BMW V10 and an Audi V10. Should be a good one.
Make triple sure you install those lifters facing the right way or you’ll be tearing it back apart. You may know that but never hurts to make sure. Prefix has good stuff. I buy Gen 3 Hemi stuff from them. Should sound pretty sick with the new cam!! That spalling on the cam lobe is a major issue with multiple brands so it’s not isolated to Mopar. I think oil is a major player and OE keeps recommending too light of a viscosity because they want gas mileage and to keep EPA happy. Prefix should get you straight on what viscosity to run. Joe Gibbs driven, Lucas oil, or Penn Grade is about the best 3 out there from personal experience having built several hundred engines and using them. Keep us posted! Love the car ❤

Stock they are not, especially corners are a mess, as with most american cars with V8 or more. I dont know a V8 except from a old 69 Mustang GT, but i was driving a lot with V6 Diesel, regular 1,9 and 2l R4 diesels, as well a NA 1,4l and 2l as well turbo 1,6l and 2,4l petrol. The cars which were the most fun and "fastest" (in general, including corners and driving "agile") were the ones with small/light engines as well a light build in general with a good weight distribution as well low point of gravity. Neither light engines, nor a good weight distribution the average american muscle car give you, including the otherwise pretty iconic and nice Viper. My favorite cars i drive are either my old, turbocharged Renault Clio RS with all wheel drive, drives like a charme also normally, is somewhat "fuel efficient" and goes like hell if i want to. Has just 970kg dry weight and is one of the lightest possible cars with AWD. Sadly its a collectors item somewhat and its a "sunny day" and weekend car. Or, which is a nice cruiser with good handling, my Subaru Impreza from 2010. Has "just" the 2l Boxer Diesel as well its pretty "bad" (not the AWD i hoped for) visco clutch for the AWD. But with a 220 HP chiptuning, removed DPF, disabled EGR and a bigger turbo it also goes nice, just the 1500kg hinders it from being a sports car.

About the camshaft failure. It seems to be a manufacturing problem. That piece was probably produced by casting and, even with inspection, it passed. It looks like internal porosity and/or inclusions (pocket of material) from the mold. I would recommend checking also the crankshaft and oil pump just to be sure
For a casting porosity or delamination. If forged, some kind of inclusion maybe a soft area in the blank that didn't harden properly. If the hardening is via carborization, maybe one of the burners wasn't lit. Lucky you didn't get chips that damaged something else. Did it look like a fingerprint?
Yeah, I agree. I'm a machinist with little bit of metallurgy knowledge. I'd guess there was a flaw in the annealing process, too hard on the outside, too soft on the inside. High pressure makes the spalling at the peak there.
As soon as I saw this pitting on the cam lobe, my brain said 'bad casting'. I'm nowhere near as knowledgeable as the other comments here, but I think it was just bad luck and nothing else. Honestly for as bad as it looked, I'm surprised there wasn't other damage passed down the rest of the valvetrain.

As a retired aerospace engineer that did mostly mechanical engineering, the frosting on the lifter's roller and the damage to that cam load suggests three possible (either individual or a combination of): (1) lubrication; (2) metallurgical; and (3) dimensional. Looking at the spalling on the cam lobe and more specifically - where in the roller path (at the ends) suggests the load (side-to-side) profile and that roller's "crown drop" was not optimal. If the surface treatment (nitriding, carburization, ??) on that cam lobe was less thane designed, the surface would fatigue earlier. And a lubricant (tribology) generated fault could also be the cause or a contributing factor. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribology
@@IRON_D No... he said it's most likely the crown on the roller of the lifter wasn't machined quite perfectly... or possibly metallurgy/treatment of the cam (a "soft" spot in that lobe), or the cam lobe wasn't machined perfectly, or that lobe wasn't getting adequate oiling... or a combination of any or all of those factors. The Viper is a supercar, but it's still a mass produced supercar, vulnerable to tolerance stacking just like any other mass produced car. This is why cars have warranties...
@ 1:21 OMEFFIN'G, THAT CAR IS SO EFFIN' BEAUTIFUL!!! That GTS body are just so freaking gorgeous!!! Really, 2nd gen Vipers are absolutely magnificent works of art, and unbelievable marvels of automotive engineering. I can genuinely feel it in my stomach when I see them in person, and very, VERY few cars have that effect on me...
it’s harder for small creators cause they usually have full time jobs plus putting out the types of videos he typically does usually involve spending a decent amount of money on parts to upgrade a car then go test it. i do agree though i really enjoy his content, even if the videos don’t involve a bunch of expensive modifications or super time consuming work being done on the car id enjoy seeing more upload’s about small updates with the cars or racing/ driving.
@@conner768lol not expensive you say? He built a 3v NA and if I had to guesstimate he dumped over 20 k into the mustang alone also with all the different revisions he does of each stage, it is super time intensive. And he is no small creator at 220k subs he could easily make 10 k a month just with his audience and replace his normal job.
@@retrograde11 sure, but I don’t think you should post every 3 months for a 5 minute vid. I love the channel and would love to see more that’s all I’m saying
In my opinion it was probably floating that valve (weakened spring) and hammering the cam. Or possibly slightly sticking valve in the guide doing the same thing.
I drive an ISF and love Vipers but I always thought both of them are so under-rated. It's sad but isn't because I like having a rare car that few people know about. I've been following your builds for a while and I'm glad to see that you didn't lose the whole motor. Can't wait to your upgrades doin' work.
Finally man, as much as I love the stang vids, I was hoping to see the vioer get some well needed attention and love. I love v8’s a lot but something about a v10 that has the American v8 feels and sounds is just amazing.
I know you said in your channel info you probably shouldn't subscribe. I had to, you always put out great videos that remind me of what you tube use to be. FUN informative and raw.....thanks man and keep up the good work.
One vid every few months, I’m fine with it because they’re so darn good. Reminds me of the days UA-camrs posted because they wanted to and not for ad rev. Cheers bro
Thanks for the vid, you're good at making them and best of luck with your viper build! If it's not too much trouble I would pull the oil pan off and look at the main and rod bearings, that sound was very rod-slappy to me.
By the look of that cam. It looks like the casting came apart. Those peices of metal are somewhere in that engine. Weather it be in the bottom of the oil pan or I would definitely look at the mains and rod bearings while you have it out. Some of that metal definitely made it to the rod bearings and mains
Like all f***** morons who drive powerful engines. They didn't have to get to that point with lesser cars where you learn how to actually drive an engine correctly. Can't wait until you blow the next thing.
I was debating on buying an older viper just for a project. I finally got a decent job not outstanding but i make enough to play around a bit. And it pretty amazing how good it holds up to current cars. I wish i would picked up one of those rams with the viper motor they were really cheap for a while but have went back up.
Great job on the proper disassembly to find the issue. I know what a horrible, time consuming and expensive job that is so kudos to you for doing it right, finding the problem and making it better. Most people would have ignored it until it killed the car.
New subscriber from Tampa, I really like the authenticity of your videos! The viper has always been a car that has made me wonder, I thought about buying one a dozen times. I felt that Dodge could have put more into the platform yet with a massive V10 it was always a bit of an outsider. A cool car that wasn't oversaturated on the street. Yet the horror stories that I heard about the rear ends and inevitable crash really made me wonder??? You're one of the few that have taken that viper platform and really exposed some possibilities, which many owners don't dare explore when it comes to cracking the motor open. When I look at that camshaft the first thing I thought of was poor metal at the foundry, I swear that is a pot metal defect straight from the manufacturer. Is it a wear item yes, but you can obviously tell that has been well lubricated and those pits happened from the inside out in my opinion. The funny thing is the light damage to the lifter was likely from the cam pitting. Great work keep it up!
the viper was my dream car growing up, I used it in every video game it was featured and then I kind of forgot about it. This video made me feel 12 again. Whay a beautiful car.
@riogrande163 Says a troll that knows absolutely nothing about performance and reliability ... GM sucks too, but out of Ford, GM and Dodge, GM has the best gas engines ... always did.
You can pinpoint vibration/sound location putting a wooden broomstick/dowel on the engine and then place your ear on the rounded end for comfort. My friend showed me that to pin point rod/rocker valve chatter with the valve cover on. Works really well.
Your GTS is one of, if not my dream supercar, ranking extremely high on my bucket car list. I actually saw the video that Donut made about the different generations of Viper, and I picked yours as my favorite one, way back then...
I live close to mid ohio sports car course and i'm not sure if they still do it but they used to have an event every year that involved Vipers. I would see dozens of them coming right passed my house every year, but it's been awhile. Anyone who was a kid when the Viper came out has to love them, they are still so unique even today.
Oh snap! That was some VERY loud ticking. I would have been terrified driving it to the track and back. That cam lobe damage looks really weird, especially considering the roller is fine. Maybe it was just some fatigued metal, or it had some problems during the casting or hardening stage of fabrication. Huh... Well, i hope the tick/slap/rattle is gone after the new cam and heads. Pumped for the next video!!!
I worked on television production in Vancouver specifically Stargate and Battlestar Galactica, and there was a number of people there who worked on the Viper production as well A friend of mine who'd moved to the U.S who was a Mopar enthusiast Who dealt with the issues of a RT 440 enlarged to 525 cubic inches talked with one of the Viper guys. He said that some of the camshafts were prone to a weird kind of spalling because they didn't do an intermediate step in the Machining of shot peening it and then finishing it to its final Dimensions before surface hardening it again.
1 quart of ATF in the oil and idle for 30 minutes, change the oil. what you heard was a stuck lifter, taking it racing ended the lifter and your camshaft. nice work! i knew what your problem was when i heard it for 2 seconds. this happens to most hydraulic lifter engines that sit for long periods without constant use.
Never been a huge Viper fan, but my God that color is awesome. With the color and the tinted windows, that's probably the nicest looking Viper I've ever seen :)
I remember a magazine talking about this before it was released. A new Shelby monster... but the side pipes were showing and it looked like a beast. Wish they left them uncovered. Always looks like a pretty girl that's covering her charms...
You have inspired me to hunt down a 2nd Gen in the next few months. With 14 cars now, not sure how I will get it past the wifey… I will find a way. Great video!
@ 4:04 my bet would be that that damage on the cam lobe would have been from a previous engine failure, that had already been repaired. If it was the current issue the roller at the end of your lifter would have pitting on the left and right sides of it and a smooth track down the middle, which it does not. In fact the damage on the roller is exactly opposite, showing texture in the center, with smooth left and right sides. This excludes the pitting on the camshaft from being the culprit in this situation...
Not a scientist or a mechanic, but I wonder if a weak valve spring could cause this issue? Appears he checked for a broken spring but one weaker spring might cause both the ticking and excessive wear on the cam lobe and roller lifter. I'm certain that with the new camshaft, new ported and polished cylinder heads, he should also go for brand new valves, springs, and lifters would solve the problem, until something else breaks.
That Milwaukee ratchet is such a great tool, it made me buy a 12V Milwaukee tool even though all my other power tools are 18V Makita. I'm sort of committing battery adultery, but damn that compact 12V battery is convenient. Fits into tight spaces. That thing has saved me lots of aggravation, a very useful tool, one of the best things I've ever bought.
I'm glad you drove it like you did. That's the way God intended those cars to be driven, not stuck in the garage. It's supposed to make noise, raise hell and have fun! Good man!

@@BC08the GT350 (R).went 12.1 needs to run it
Have been bone stock on a tire cobras like mine crack well into 11s but thats boosted 😆
@@AnnatarCarvour Just used a common resource for both. Motor Trend.
Stock GT350s have gone 11s, but so have Gen 2 Viper GTSs.
I’m astonished that the Viper walked the new Mustang. That’s one bad ass snake I love that car. The right year, right color, right wheels and no stripes. 👍🏼
Yea...tuned.
Not close to new. 3v pre 2012
Mustangs will NEVER be a viper or Vette regard-less of what they cost! The gt40 was but they are history
Seeing your GTS on Donut was honestly the coolest thing a carguy like myself could see. As soon as I saw the video and that distinctive color I knew it was your car too lol
Every single time I see you post something I watch it. Absolutely love the vids!!!
thanks brother 🙏
As a child. This was my dream car. I remember seeing one at a gas station randomly, and the guy must’ve seen my staring at it in awe. Long story short, he let me sit inside it. 20ish or so years later and I still remember that.
Guys Four Eyes uploaded, it's a good day
I am old beat up motorcrosser who LOVED this video. The porting part at the end was the icing on the cake. Good luck with your Viper!
thank you sir
Awesome car and excellent video. There are Waaaaaay to many of those VLOG style boring videos on UA-cam that SUCK! This video should be the benchmark for everyone- Get to the point and show some action! You nailed it all. Very entertaining and informative. Keep up the great work.
I'm a Viper tech and had a camshaft fail on a 2003 Viper. Replaced cam and lifters, cleaned out the oil pan and drives today.
Spot on. Cams were flame hardened DI. Not too precisice as to how hard and where compared to induction.
Same on Hemis.
would it be easy to just say check the oil for metal and check the lifter for spacing.
So you saying a poorly manufactured campaign shaft or this guy used cheap oil? 😂
Came here for this kind of a response. Thank you very much.
This channel is filled with great projects! I can't wait for them to come out. Keep up with these cool ass projects
Incredibly attractive vehicles no doubt!
Please post more often, you have lots of subscribers… take advantage of it! 😢
it’s harder for small creators cause they usually have full time jobs plus putting out the types of videos he typically does usually involve spending a decent amount of money on parts to upgrade a car then go test it. i do agree though i really enjoy his content, even if the videos don’t involve a bunch of expensive modifications or super time consuming work being done on the car id enjoy seeing more upload’s about small updates with the cars or racing/ driving.
Quality over quantity....
@@retrograde11 sure, but I don’t think you should post every 3 months for a 5 minute vid. I love the channel and would love to see more that’s all I’m saying
You think this shit is cheap bro? lol… please sink tens of thousands more dollars into custom racing gear so I can see, please!!!😂
In my opinion it was probably floating that valve (weakened spring) and hammering the cam. Or possibly slightly sticking valve in the guide doing the same thing.
Best channel there is. unique builds really well filmed and edited. As well as very informative and entertaining. Please never stop making these.
My neighbor had a Viper when I was in high school. White with blue racing stripes. Looked so sick
Awesome quality and a easy watch as always! I dont mind these shorter update videos at all, fills in the blanks between the juicy content :D
One Four Eyes video a day keeps your Rock Knock away ❤️
I drive an ISF and love Vipers but I always thought both of them are so under-rated. It's sad but isn't because I like having a rare car that few people know about. I've been following your builds for a while and I'm glad to see that you didn't lose the whole motor. Can't wait to your upgrades doin' work.
I love seeing you post about the Viper! I've been hooked ever since you got it!
By far my absolute favorite car build content on the entire platform
Finally man, as much as I love the stang vids, I was hoping to see the vioer get some well needed attention and love. I love v8’s a lot but something about a v10 that has the American v8 feels and sounds is just amazing.
1:00 THX intro starts
I don t killing myself about cars and stuff, but man, your skills are above and love to see supercars well maintained.Of course subscribed
HE FINALLY POSTED! UA-cam trolled and didnt send me the notification, but i came here 1 day after and luckly the video was there!
Cheers bro
The ultimate MOPAR.
So beautiful - esthetically and mechanically.
Definitely in my top-five-favorites list.
what do you mean Viper, thats a Banshee 😂
Hahahaha 😂😂😂
Pontiac banshee was the Corvette killer.
Gta3 ftw
Man I CANNOT wait for these next two car upgrades. I love both those series so much
My only gripe of your video is just that it's not long enough! Always delighted to watch your new videos though!
Thanks for the vid, you're good at making them and best of luck with your viper build! If it's not too much trouble I would pull the oil pan off and look at the main and rod bearings, that sound was very rod-slappy to me.
He aint resting the mustang until its gonna be a demon destroyer 🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🥶🥶
THAT may never happen though...
This man is living the dream 🫡 props to you for whatever you did to get to this point in your life
By the look of that cam. It looks like the casting came apart. Those peices of metal are somewhere in that engine. Weather it be in the bottom of the oil pan or I would definitely look at the mains and rod bearings while you have it out. Some of that metal definitely made it to the rod bearings and mains
Rod bearings and mains. Rod bearings and mains. I doubt it. I doubt it.
4:29 high engine temperatures for long periods of time... you beat on it for too long at once!
Like all f***** morons who drive powerful engines. They didn't have to get to that point with lesser cars where you learn how to actually drive an engine correctly. Can't wait until you blow the next thing.
man you put so much content in 1 video its impressive
Thank you for the new upload❤
I was debating on buying an older viper just for a project. I finally got a decent job not outstanding but i make enough to play around a bit. And it pretty amazing how good it holds up to current cars. I wish i would picked up one of those rams with the viper motor they were really cheap for a while but have went back up.
They're quite enjoyable to work on, plenty of room, good access, cheap parts
Hey, when does the next video comes Online? @@Four_Eyes
Great job on the proper disassembly to find the issue. I know what a horrible, time consuming and expensive job that is so kudos to you for doing it right, finding the problem and making it better. Most people would have ignored it until it killed the car.
Like if you just checkin Incase he posted again 🤣😭
pretty soon, less than 10 days now
New subscriber from Tampa, I really like the authenticity of your videos!
The problem is obvious, It's a Mopar.
the viper was my dream car growing up, I used it in every video game it was featured and then I kind of forgot about it. This video made me feel 12 again. Whay a beautiful car.
You bought a Dodge ... sorry for your luck, but you should know better ...
Sad but true.
Viper engines are usually pretty bulletproof.
@@JHKCF That must be the reason why I've seen so many that are hurt ...
Found the lsx fanboy. Yikes.
Brand loyalty sheep are so pathetic.
I wish I could hemorrhage money on my cars!
That is my favorite Viper. The perfect spec. Love everything about it!
Beautiful car....sits with such poise..perfect on every level...lucky man to own the piece of motoring history..
Let’s gooooo. I bought my Mustang 09 GT . And thanks to you I have a mod list with good results. Great videos.
Your GTS is one of, if not my dream supercar, ranking extremely high on my bucket car list.
I actually saw the video that Donut made about the different generations of Viper, and I picked yours as my favorite one, way back then...
You really have been giving that thing it’s best life good on you God bless you
To this day, the Viper is still my favorite looking car next to the Lamborghini Diablo. Personal preference, of course.
great video. like how you showed all the modifications etc going thru the timeline.
The Viper was my Dream Car when I was a kid, it is awesome to see how well it holds up even 20+ years later
man your videos are literally S tier, please don't stop making them
I live close to mid ohio sports car course and i'm not sure if they still do it but they used to have an event every year that involved Vipers. I would see dozens of them coming right passed my house every year, but it's been awhile. Anyone who was a kid when the Viper came out has to love them, they are still so unique even today.
We really enjoy your content! Keep it up. I was waiting for a new post, I always check once in a while!
I have this Viper in the R/T 10 model. Love your channel!
Awesome video dude, always loved the viper. Almost bought a salvage one a few times. Also the 2017 acr is probably my favorite car of all time.
Man I really enjoy the videos and information about each car! Keep up the good work man!👍
I worked on television production in Vancouver specifically Stargate and Battlestar Galactica, and there was a number of people there who worked on the Viper production as well
A friend of mine who'd moved to the U.S who was a Mopar enthusiast Who dealt with the issues of a RT 440 enlarged to 525 cubic inches talked with one of the Viper guys. He said that some of the camshafts were prone to a weird kind of spalling because they didn't do an intermediate step in the Machining of shot peening it and then finishing it to its final Dimensions before surface hardening it again.
1 quart of ATF in the oil and idle for 30 minutes, change the oil. what you heard was a stuck lifter, taking it racing ended the lifter and your camshaft. nice work! i knew what your problem was when i heard it for 2 seconds. this happens to most hydraulic lifter engines that sit for long periods without constant use.
nice to see the Viper get some love.
Never been a huge Viper fan, but my God that color is awesome. With the color and the tinted windows, that's probably the nicest looking Viper I've ever seen :)
Been a few years, glad to know you still have your stang
Wow that second gen V10 Miata done beat the hell cat powered yacht
I love this guys videos.. none of the annoying 20m foreplay of people talking and fake drama porno movie level acting.
lol thanks amigo
I remember a magazine talking about this before it was released. A new Shelby monster... but the side pipes were showing and it looked like a beast. Wish they left them uncovered. Always looks like a pretty girl that's covering her charms...
That just sounds MEAN!! Love that exhaust note.
I love this car so much. Great episode.
Seemed like porosity in the cast process, or maybe just fatigue, good thing you diagnosed it in time!
You have inspired me to hunt down a 2nd Gen in the next few months. With 14 cars now, not sure how I will get it past the wifey… I will find a way. Great video!
I was never a MOPAR or Viper fan, but hey, this was a great video. Thumbs up, nice job.
We need more vids man… we love ur content
thanks, workin in it trust me
@ 4:04 my bet would be that that damage on the cam lobe would have been from a previous engine failure, that had already been repaired.
Saw this suggested and as a classic viper fan had to watch. Subbed. Looking forward to more!
Such great cars! Awesome video man, love the journey with the Viper!
Our king went hard on the editing in this one.
2008 viper is my favorite and always will be.
For a guy with more money than I'll ever see, you sure do have some serious fun with it!
I'm glad you drove it like you did. That's the way God intended those cars to be driven, not stuck in the garage. It's supposed to make noise, raise hell and have fun! Good man!
Nice to see Mustangs on YT that aren’t careening off the road and crashing.
