This was a real blast to the past, I remember being a teenager and looking through so many photos of fashion like this because I was fascinated and sad I couldn't afford it, and then trying to make my own.
I think mori girl is probably the first harajuku fashion I got obsessed with. Although I kinda never acted upon that urge. I say kinda cuz I tried to put it in my everyday wear, but not fully. And now I got reminiscent of it and my brain was just kinda like "we love dark mori now". Especially now when fall is coming around the corner.
Crocs with charms in them are actually super in style in S. korea rn. I picked up a couple pairs and some jibbitz (thats what the charms r called lmao) last summer when I visited my family there and wear them all the time I get tons of compliments and I was someone who swore off crocs before that.
Crocs are just overhated. I don’t understand why someone would get so heated about a shoe. Not everyone wants to spend more than their college funds on foot coverings, Amber.
Crocs are great. I was biking today and slid my left foot right by the concrete block in a tight alley, thankfully my croc(?) saved my little finger, tho the shoe ripped a bit. Scary thinking about would’ve happened if I were in flip-flops or sandals.
Man, this makes me wish I had held on to my copies of various teen magazines from the 90s that did occasional spreads of Japanese or international fashions so I could compare late 90s Harajuku style to modern day.
So nice seeing mori again. It's been a while since I last wore it, so I felt so nostalgic seeing it again. But yes, I like to take the general aspects of a style that I like and run away with it, adding my personal touches to it and merging it with other styles instead of trying too hard to stay within the style's "rules". It's so much more freeing and fun.
Stitchess, you NEED to do a video on jpop idol fashion :O Wasuta, for example deals with kawaii Maho Shojo inspired outfits each with different motifs and designed by Kimura U. Meanwhile Hello Project (responsible for Sayumi Michishige, Airi Suzuki, Buono!, and more) also has some good outfits, some louder outfits in the late 2000 and early 2010s being pretty ahead of the trends.
ive been interested in alt styles for a while, but every time i see one of your videos i just get the urge to diy 20000 things at once,, i dont even have the skill or the materials but something about your content, even just comparing styles like this, motivates me,,,
Not gonna lie, maxi skirt, uge colar, looks super comfy to me . Kinda gives me thrift store finds put together in a super fun way. ^^ Loved that last combo outfit. I don't think the fashion is dying, it just changes and transforms itself in new things ^^
friend who works at W❤️C told me the newest trend is Xジェンダー (x-jendā aka x gender). Idontknow I think it’s pretty cool. Like, there are brands like candy stripper where everything has giant pockets. Kry with a black metal/satanic/occult vibe. Hardcore chocolate with cute band shirts. Harajuku is still striving! Also not sure if it’s a trend or not but it also seems like every girl is in a chika idol group.
Oh, wow! That video is from 2017 and I was kind of worried that the trend might have faded (I follow tokyo fashion’s tumblr and the tag for it is sparse) but I’m so glad to hear it hasn’t! :-D hell yeah
@@lynxaway it’s pretty mainstream now adays, which is cool if you ask me. Check out the artist 女王蜂 [queen bee]. I lived in Japan during the time you’re talking about and your mention of the two purses thing brought me back! It was a *HUGE* trend to have a cute purse and also carry like, a small canvas bag in which you put mundane things like a drink and tissues. It was in all the magazines (I got a few free canvas mini totes from my favorites) and women from all subcultures carried them.
A thing that I loved of Harajuku is that it's not like Milan's fashion streets where people are superjudgmental lol I'm still trying to build my wardrobe... basically my style is "t-shirts of stuff that I like + skirts and comfy oversize dresses that I can get dirty when I paint", so when going around Harajuku and Shimokitazawa I was like "my gosh this is so extra and cool and nice". Yeah, btw Shimokitazawa is a little fashion gem of it's own tbh. That being said, YESSSSSSSSS to the big heart bag DIY ♥️♥️♥️

Thank you for the nostalgia. Harajuku fashion is such an inspiration. I can't imagine it ever fully disappearing. Trends come and go, but the spirit lives on. :)
The Stitchess i need to remember the name of my favourite Kera model of that time..good old times!!! I am looking forward to your video on Mori girl fashion :) still loving the look although it is already dead here unfortunately (>人<;) I would say the heavy influence of Kfashion is also one reason for the current style right now
The girls at 12:18 remind me of how me and my friends are so different in style yet manage to blend in with one another. I always loved TF street snaps. So much creativity!
Your videos are so informative i love it u.u tbh its a breath of fresh air how you give sort of a historical and political history of jfashion, giving more insight than other videos i've seen. i used to get tired of jfashion channels that were just hauls and hauls, especially with the massive environmental impact of it, and just surface level info, but you get in DEEP and i love that. and i love how you make some of your own stuff or thrift!
I really don't know how I managed to stumble on your channel as Lolita/Harijuku/etc. fashion has almost zero context within my life whatsoever but I seriously can't get enough. Your humor is on point and I'm learning more about J-fashion than I ever thought I needed to know.
That outfit at 3:30 is something I would've been wearing in high school 'cause those greens would've matched my hair lol I remember the whole "is it it emo or scene" debate in a lot of clothes as "emo" kids started adding pop and neon colours to their outfits.. oh what a weird time.. lol It also reminds me I have these weird Abbey Dawn geometric skinny jeans that I would wear all the time but they never matched anything
Are you going to do the Harajuko episode of What Not to Wear? It is a funny episode and it would be a treat to see you react to. it. She was very snarky to Clinton and Stacy.
This video really make me nostalgic. I remember that time I love looking at photos from TokyoFashion and then drawing it because I love looking at their styles
Love hearing you talk about the world of fashion, even though I'm the last person someone would ask for fashion advice, hearing your thoughts makes me feel a bit more fashion conscience. Also your shirt is supremely cute!!! ♥️♥️♥️
I was 12 in 2008 and just hitting my prime weaboo phase and I remember finding copies of the books Fruits and Fresh Fruits at the library and I probably checked them out for at least three months straight. Just pouring over them and imagining what it was like to be able to dress like that and get your picture taken like it's normal. It was so nice to revisit that in this video!
As much as I love the old styles I find current harajuku to be MUCH more inspiring than trying to recreate old trends. Maybe some of the looks are less iconic but there’s a different energy.
early to mid 2000's harajuku fashion feels like the peak but the past few years it's become as personalized and unique as it used to be, love the fashion ecosystem :)
Omg! Thank you for making this video!! I used to LOVE looking at Tokyo Street fashion back in the early 2000s where I learned of Lolita style, FairyKei, and I was into The manga Nana, Vampire Knight, etc. I used to go to the library just to get Manga and look up Street fashion magazines. Wow, you brought back sooooo many fun memories 😢🥰
This was a really interesting look into Harajuku trends over the years. The one thing I would disagree with though, is that colors have become louder, brighter and wilder. I think the photographer at TokyoFashion is biased towards only photographing those styles because obviously that's what's impactful on camera. If anything, I've noticed the opposite trend towards more muted, earthy colors. But you're on the money about the mashed together, thrifted, oversized sweater+collar+long skirt trend. I'd recomend the website style arena for a bit more of an accurate image of what fashionble people are actually wearing atm. There's alot of the afformentioned thrifted, layered style. I also find it super interesting filtering by the different areas of Tokyo and seeing the contrast of how people dress in different parts of town becasuse it's changes a lot. www.style-arena.jp/en/tokyo-streetstyle
Hearing you is a JOY! What a great video and analysis, thanks for bring this up! Lightens my heart to a hopefully brigther and colorful Harajuku... We're not far from that, I see! Yay! These present photos/looks are so interesting, thanks for sharing! THE HEART BAG AAAH
All the styles and their elitist attitudes around certain brands drew me away from an aesthetic that facilitated my need for experimentation with fashion at first, but later became a place of scrutiny. I remember being 14 and combining a thrifted 80s blouse, black accessories and a body line skirt with black lining and an aquarelle print. Looking back it was a very unique look and easily my best outfit in months but I remember hating it after people told me it was cheap and low quality and that I should invest in the more well known brands.
6:42 A lot of the ppl who went dressed up to harajuku back then (I'm not sure nowadays) actually went with more regular clothes and got changed in bathrooms once they go to harajuku. So they needed large bags to take all of their clothes and store the other ones! It's funny because we only see the photos and think wow they are so courageous going around dressing like this or that Japanese ppl are chill and don't care what others wear but they were often actually afraid/embarrassed to wear those things outside of harajuku and specially on public transportation.
Yay! please do more of these. This was so refreshing to look back to my last year of high school. I'd love to see a fruits one - I actually had a catalog from a friend back in 2005.
I honestly feel really inspired by this, even if it has been a year since you published it, because it feels so nice to see that, instead of capsulating themselves like we in southamerican's fashion walks have been doing this late years, they are already starting to CHANGE AND BE MORE CREATIVE, and i love that, i simply can't express HOW MUCH i needed this video in my life... I just felt like i didn't actually knew what i wanted, but now i feel that, clear as light, i just need to be more myself. I'm always asking myself, "oh no, i'm gonna deviate too much", or "everyone is gonna see me and i will freak out as always", but it is actually really nice to see that you can go out of an "aesthetic", or an already named "fashion", and it will be better, since it's gonna be more interesting, more fascinating, more like yourself. I know what i want and will be now. Not an style, but rather, a person. And that's good thing.
I follow the Tokyo Fashion Instagram and I LOVE the outfits they post, so I love this video comparing the fashion of 2009 with the 2020 one. Also, the one with the giant heart purse is MY FAVORITE. I enjoyed this video a lot, one of my favourite things to do is browsing websites like this and looking through old fruits compilation books my friend has. They’re so inspiring even today, they give me even more coord ideas
Honestly I really love the more recent take on Harajuku style like the one you showed at 12:59 in the middle, for a long time the norm was fitted and puffy but the more ''unflattering'', shapeless fits are coming through and I love it so much :D
I have a friend who lives in Japan and currently, they do not like going to stores since a lot of them in their area are oversized fashion. I'm here for it and would love to get my hands on more vintage pieces to turn some looks.
Me in 2009 ? Mmmmh I am pretty sure I was in the depth of my punk Lolita phase. 2011 was Mori. 2013 I thought mori decora would be a good idea (basically looking like an old rag doll with too many nature-spiritual trinkets). This made me so nostalgic 🥰.
Your content is always educational and fascinating! I really enjoyed seeing the older street snaps, they are incredibly nostalgic. You hit the nail on the head with your closing statement! I agree that the future holds a lot of reinventions of old styles and cool new styles too. ^-^ And that's so exciting to think about!
I think that teddy bear outfit is by the brand Pink House, my mom had some of their dresses from the 80's and they're still around today and make lots of clothes with the teddy bear theme in lolita style as well!
Hells yeah I have been waiting for Bumpits to Make a come back! I couldn't pull off Harajuku fashion as amazingly as ya'll do.I just like bumbits. Lol.
"Everyone decided that if they were going to go out they might as well make it worth it" is such an accurate description like i was wasting time getting ready to go to the grocery store
i’ve been thinking about this lately! gaijins love to be cookie cutter but i always felt like that was weird since it’s supposed to be alternative, lately i’ve seen gaijin gals and pals being weirder and more experimental! which has made me happy because not all people on harajuku are always in a certain style
"I'm not sure if I want to classify this as "emo" or "scene""
Me: * looks at shoes *
Me: * looks at bright colors *
Me: * looks at haircut *

can agree thats scene
Yeah it was scene. Emo doesn't do the bright shit. She also called A basic punk outfit goth when goth is completely different
This was a real blast to the past, I remember being a teenager and looking through so many photos of fashion like this because I was fascinated and sad I couldn't afford it, and then trying to make my own.
I actually stopped actively searching for it so I wouldnt end up sad bc I couldn't wear it as well 😂
Wanna bet mori has a comeback now that cottagecore is a thing?

As someone who loves mori girl I've been enjoying cottagecore too because the aesthetics are so close. I would love to see a mori resurgence!

Honestly I really love the more recent take on Harajuku style like the one you showed at 12:59 in the middle, for a long time the norm was fitted and puffy but the more ''unflattering'', shapeless fits are coming through and I love it so much :D
Yesss bring decora back! I used to rock the heck outs decora fashion!
I'm here for this video and for your cute outfit ~ that cardigan is so nice!
Looove this video. I was obsessed with harajuku fashion in 2008. I used to have the fruits book.
So many words I don't understand but I love it anyway 😍
neo decora,,,,, my beloved. i love decora makeup with the paint bandaids and glitter
I have a friend who lives in Japan and currently, they do not like going to stores since a lot of them in their area are oversized fashion. I'm here for it and would love to get my hands on more vintage pieces to turn some looks.
I think this is my favorite type of content from your channel 💕 but I like it all lol
I really enjoyed making this video in particular. I’d love to do more street snap related content in the future!
I'd love to see a video on mori kei!
I still cry about SWIMMER closing. I definitely want a heart tote bag diy video though, yes ma'am.
^-^ And that's so exciting to think about!
so what im getting from the intro of this plus one of the jenny jones reactions is that we're currently watching a bisexual queen ?
Your videos are so underrated ;^; kEeP mAkInG videos PLEASEE❤️
PLEASE make a video on visual kei too!! Ive never seen a youtuber make any videos about it plus it fits into the harajuku goth trend you mentioned
I love your silky-like hairbows, like in this video, or the mori kei history video.
Reminds me a little of Sandy in Grease
I came as fast as I could for all the hime looks
At a first glance, I thought the thumbnail shots were from pgsm! They really have a Sailor Moon vibe to me, and I love it.
I have various copies of old us fruits and other magazines full of street snaps, I absolutely love looking in them.
They’re super inspiring!
Amazing video! If you wanted to make more fashion history videos, how about one on gyaru?
I think that teddy bear outfit is by the brand Pink House, my mom had some of their dresses from the 80's and they're still around today and make lots of clothes with the teddy bear theme in lolita style as well!
Hells yeah I have been waiting for Bumpits to Make a come back! I couldn't pull off Harajuku fashion as amazingly as ya'll do.I just like bumbits. Lol.
"Everyone decided that if they were going to go out they might as well make it worth it" is such an accurate description like i was wasting time getting ready to go to the grocery store
I know almost nothing about Japanese culture but love ur videos and these videos and so I really did need and appreciate the extra details
A diy oversized heart bag video would be so cool 👀👀
i’ve been thinking about this lately! gaijins love to be cookie cutter but i always felt like that was weird since it’s supposed to be alternative, lately i’ve seen gaijin gals and pals being weirder and more experimental! which has made me happy because not all people on harajuku are always in a certain style
3rd picture: pretty sure a lot of ppl in Berlin would kill for this outfit
This is so nostalgic, thank you for this video 💜
amazing video yet again, thank u!! and ohh hell yeah a giant heart bag DIY please!! would be so cool
