      This is fecked up. You have a society whose population growth is well below replacement rate, and here you are **celebrating** life styles which deny the fact that women give birth and take care of the children and men work to support the family until the children are old enough for both parents to work either full or part time. With a few generations there will be no genderless youth to celebrate because there won't be any children produced of either gender.

      Stephon Zeno When we say we don't care what others think it's not that we're saying we actually don't care. It's more of a way to say that we just try our best to ignore it and refuse to give someone the satisfaction of thinking they're affecting our lifestyle.

    To quote a spoken line in The Cement Garden, "Girls can wear jeans and cut their hair short, wear shirts and boots because it's okay to be a boy. But for a boy to look like a girl is degrading, because you think that being a girl is degrading." Respect for these people for choosing what they believe in, despite the usual perceptions of society.

    For a society that prizes conformity and where people generally not wanting too not want to "stand out", this was unexpected.
    But hopefully, as the years go by, more and more people accept one's individual choices and respect each other.

      Tokyo is a massive modern city. There are thousands and thousands of people there who don't fit into Japanese societal norms and you can find your place easily if you are a weirdo. Same probably for Yokohama, Osaka, Kobe, etc. Don't lump all of Japanese society into one conservative group. Fucking Harajuku isn't the same as a mountain village in Chubu.

      Ad Hoc i think your missing the point. not everyone is open to genderless fashion and especially japan isn't. Girls can wear whatever they want but once they identify as a guy people freak out. it's kinda like this is america too. there are traditional people that stay strictly to "boys should wear this and girls should wear this." there are somedays when i'm told i dress like a guy or i look very girlie.

    • @flower-ld5id
      @flower-ld5id 7 років тому +23

      that may be the case but since women are relatively liberated in what they can wear now, men are left behind a bit. i wish i could wear skirts out but i would be judged. much more harshly than if i was a girl in trousers

    • @TheNanamariam
      @TheNanamariam 7 років тому +87

      I also think it's because since it is patriarchal society to be seen in women's wear is like an insult. Ofcourse women can wear mens clothes, men are superior but to dress as a women makes you inferior. Which hinders mens ability to be expressive not just in fashion but in everything else. If you act and dress similar to a girl then you are seen as something less than.

    • @flower-ld5id
      @flower-ld5id 7 років тому +46

      TheNanamariam I think about the very same thing. For women to be seen as masculine is accepted because it's admirable in what remains a patriarchal society. Men that are feminine are definitely seen as degraded as men are also bound by gender roles

    • @saeefa

    I've always disliked how people associate certain fashions and colors with gender. You don't have to be gay or a women to wear makeup and pink and you don't have to be a lesbian or a man to have short hair and wear big boxy t-shirts. My mom constantly pushes me to wear "girls clothing" and for years I was/still am degraded for wearing "men's clothing". I really love how androgyny is becoming a more accepting thing. But, alot of people still aren't as accepting and simply hurt others because of their ignorance... 😔

    I think their style would be better described as "androgynous" rather than "genderless".
    "Androgynous" means personal presentation that appearings neither distinctly male nor female (or a blend of both), whereas "genderless" is usually used by nonbinary/transgender people to refer to their experiences outside the gender binary.
    There's a big difference between "I'm a boy that likes wearing skirts" and "I have no gender"... I think it's better to be clear with the terminology that's used. 😕

      I'm a nonbinary person who lives in the U.S. and adores several Japanese fashion styles. I understand the confusion in labeling this style "genderless" as opposed to "androgynous", which is pretty analogous to what was described here but in western terms. I think there's likely a cultural disconnect of sorts between our understanding of this type of dress in Japan (assuming you're also from the West, but pls feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, and I'm sorry for the assumption) and its connotations there and how we might interpret it here. It's called "genderless" there, and folks who wear it probably fall all over the actual gender identity spectrum (and may have different language for their experience than what non-cisgender folks in the West may use to describe their identities also!) but its closest parallel in the west would be "androgynous" styles of dress. Its not necessarily wrong that this what Japanese wearers of this style call it "Genderless", it's just their way of describing and relating to the style in their culture.

      They are to be easily influenced millennials--they're intellectual studies of advertisements has prevailed them to become Chinese "Genderless" abominations. Thus they have mental problems.
      Kim Yugyeom,
      Of course they love what they're doing--they have lost their sanity.
      Biologically, they are still the same gender no matter what they do to change their genitals. The only change they are doing is their personality--which adds to their mental state.
      And obviously changing your personality doesn't mean negative. However it does DEPEND. Such as this one: This guy(Because that's who he really is)decided to chop his raw dick off.
      This is obviously because he thought it was style. It isn't because he just wants to be genderless. In fact, there is no damn purpose of being genderless other than being influenced of style.

Do we call them insane because of that.

    In stark contrast to the incredibly bad Buzzfeed video I just watched about Gyary girls, this is a very well made and sensitive report that shows us the culture in a totally neutral way. Thank you for making this piece, but would you please make your English subtitles larger, or in dropshadow, or even white on a black bottom bar? The subs on this are extremely hard to read.

    I love this!! Clothing shouldn't even have "gender" in the first place. It's just a piece of fabric in different shapes! Who says just because you're a man, you have to wear pants? Who cares? It doesn't mean anything.
    I've thought about this a lot, how women are so much more free when it comes to fashion. Within the last century it's still been improper in many places for women to wear pants. But then there was a change in women's rights and fashion, and now I can go outside in a dress or skirt, or I can wear pants or shorts, and no one will care. But if a man goes outside in a dress or skirt, people will stare at him, make fun of him for "looking gay" and so on.
    People probably used to think it was impossible that one day it would be totally acceptable for women to wear pants, but now it's the norm. So I think we'll see the same thing one day with men wearing "women's clothes." ❤

      Being yourself can be one of the hardest things. But if you won't be yourself then who? When it comes to the fashion you have two options how to begin - First: You'll just go crazy and wear what you want and totally dgaf ..... Second: This one is step by step - One day you'll wear one thing from style that you like, next day you'll add one more thing and wear it together.... So, you'll slowly started having style that you like... If people will stare at you just think ,,Oh, they are looking at me 'cause I look awesome... or they are just jelous" (I'm still telling this to myself :D ) It could be really weird in the beginning but it'll help. If people will tell you that it doesn't suit you, don't listen to them. They are not you and you have your own eyes to judge what suits you...... So, yep, that's it. When you'll wear what you like you'll feel more confident and you'll be proud of yourself. And you could think ,,Ou look at these fuckers, they just wear what others around them wears. How sad." ...... Oh god, this is the longest comment on youtube I've ever wrote :D I hope I motivated you a little, good luck! And sorry if I wrote some mistakes :D

    He mentioned that when girls wear men's clothes, nobody makes comment about it. That's not true. I recently got a haircut from long to really short. I get comments like I look like a boy, people might take you as a lesbian. And when I wear business casual like a man would I get comment that I look endogenous. It stresses me out so much. I strongly agree with what he said; I don't think it should matter in what "gender" women and men dress up. Looking/dressing like a woman or man is a standard that we humans created over time. But if you think about it, men used to wear long toga in Greek which could look like a maxi dress today, heels in France, and even long hair. So, "gender" of what you are wearing was determined by the culture at that place and at that era; We can't set a rule that skirts are for girls and short hair is for guys. I am glad I found this video and happy to see these young people are promoting this "Genderless Youth" movement.

In the 1800's, boys were often dressed in girls clothes until they reached a certain age. (Or so I've heard. It's been a long time since I heard that)

      Clothes are just made out of material that you can just wear to keep you warm or just to look fabulous. So clothes are just clothes.

    sexism is something that just discourage people of expressing themselves. clothes shouldn't have gender, it's just pieces of fabric. if a girl can wear shorts and skirts, boys also can do it, that's not gonna make them less manly or less girly. clothes are just things we use to cover our body and are a way to express your personality so we gotta stop telling people what and whatnot to do, let them be themselves stop criticizing. makeup also is something people do to look prettier, boys can also be pretty, they can put on lipstick, eyeliner, blush and etc if they want to feel better about themselves!!! it's so good to see a young person speaking up and being more open-minded, all those people of this video look great and happy about who they are, thats what should matter the most when it comes to self-expression!!

    This is so amazing! I am now considering to try this sort of fashion one day... if I have enough courage to express myself though! Well done to all of the people in this video, they were all very inspiring.

      If you really want to, then do it! Maybe you can ease into it slowly at first. People may be weirded out in the beginning, but keep at it and eventually they will accept you for who you are!

      Painroses Don’t fool yourself. They are slaves to fashion and just don’t want to look like everyone else in a country of millions that look similar. Not racist just fact. Black straight hair...similar features. You could easily get lost in the crowd if you didn’t figure something out to make yourself look different.
