    Great video Keith . Appreciate your time in making such an informative clip. We out in South Africa are starved for good wiring diagrams.Can you refer me to some sites that have wiring diagrams for European cars like the one that you used in this video.

    i cant believe there were no voltage drop issues before this wire completely rotted away. you would think there had to have been. great video keith. love your procedures and how u track down problems man. u make it look easy and i certainly know it isnt.

      Dylan Kinch I keep insisting that there had to be some type of an issue but the owner swears there was nothing . Either way fixed and I move along to the next one

      Hey Keith, with all the "NEW" parts on the front of that engine it screams ACCIDENT to me.
      would not surprise me one bit if that wire was pinched in the process and never fixed or it
      was overlooked. Just saying

    • @kevingallich5557
      @kevingallich5557 7 років тому

      Even with a voltage drop which I believe would just mean a slower fan speed the ECM would just compensate by running it at a higher percentage? So unless you were sitting on a highway in traffic in high heat you may not have noticed anything.

    • @NewLevelAuto
      @NewLevelAuto  7 років тому +2

      Kevin Gallich I like the thought process , however even a higher percentage can not overcome the laws of electricity . Only x amount of current can get through y resistance with z amount of voltage supplied 😉

    Initially when I saw Mercedes cooling fan, I guessed fan control module, I've seen couple of them went south, and when I opened one of them, I saw exploded transistors, probably fan motor gets shorted inside and blows up transistors inside. Good diag video!

    I am not an expert , BUT - if the car was running hot , you put in a thermostat , water pump and fan ? But you never check that the fan works - FIRST ? What if you ran jumper wires to it to see that it operates - why replace it ? Diagnosis VIA parts cannon ! Replace EVERYTHING - it's gotta work . We don't need no stinkin power ! How do they get away with it ?

      Not part swappers. When they "diagnose" a vehicle, they pull the code and whatever component is mentioned gets replaced. In this case, it was the cooling fan. The fact that the code explicitly mentioned an open circuit was above their heads.

    Excelent video…
    I had similar issue twice in my C230. In my case was failure of the fun. Maybe because I live on a hot weather are in which summer 120 degrees is normal I assuming inside the Engine it should way higher makes the fan to fail. I seen at least one video in the net in which one person open the fan ( had to cut enclosure fix it and glue it back) and found cold solder on some capacitors that reflow of the solder fixed. I ask to keep the old fan so when I find time I will open it and double check if that is the case.
    But 100% correct if the fan don’t work the AC fail to work also.
    Thank you

    All of these comments are talking about the same thing but they don't realize it. What Eric, Ivan, and Keith have in common, which VERY FEW auto mechanics have is PASSION for their profession. When you bitch about parts changers and hacks and people that don't give a shit vs. these guys that's the difference. Are these guys motivated by money, of course they are, but they truly like what they do for a living. I was the some way with Semiconductor R&D and Manufacturing. I loved that shit. Did they pay me a lot of money to do what I loved to do anyway, YES. But making electrons do what I needed them to do is what I lived for. When you're just going to a job that's paying your bills you never put the effort into it that you do when you're doing something you love. The primary job of high school should be exposing students to as many different professions as possible so that a kid can pick the one he's going to do for the rest of his life and enjoy it. Instead they throw him out the door after graduation and hope that he finds something. Another failure of the American educational system.

    Nice and useful video. Thanks. I have a question. What is the direction of the air flow? Should it go inside the engine or outside? I connected my fan with external battery assuming that the red wire is +. The fan works and the airflow is direction from inside to outside which is a bit strange because usually the air flow of the wind is from outside to inside. Thanks.

    • @tsdd.1567

      @@NewLevelAuto indeed this is the case. However, I wonder how does this help? The air in the engine compartment is hot. So, we throw a hot air through the radiator. Furthermore, if the car is moving the two air flows go against each other.

    You're a handy bloke to know.
    I have an e320 2003 w211.
    It's a nice motor.
    The temp has been fluctuating. It's just over 80° driving but on idle goes up to 100°.
    Left on idle it stays at 100°
    However twice it won't start hot.
    Need to let it cool down first.
    The fan works but as it's a variable speed fan could the problem be that it's just stuck at one speed and not going fast enough at idle to cool the engine down.ive put it in the garage today but No further forward.
    I can use it fine but I want it to run sweet as I've spent a grand on it lately just maintaining it.

    Great Video! Its really sad how many so called technicians are out there who can't diagnose something as easy as no power at the fan module! Always gotta check your power and grounds before replacing a component even if its a known failure component because 1 out of 100 times you may find a broken wire!

    • @NewLevelAuto
      @NewLevelAuto  7 років тому

      daveyio87 keep in mind that it's also HOW you check the power. If you used a volt meter and 2 strands of wire were still good what would you read ?

    • @lifekludger
      @lifekludger 7 років тому +1

      in that case wouldn't there be some voltage only reduced due to higher resistance? Great vid. Thanks for your time and also the comments.

      @daveyio87 7 років тому

      Good Point! I forgot about that, in school they actually tricked everyone. put a resistor on the power wire and it light with a test lamp. most everyone said it lit the test light. a few said hey that test lamp is kind of dim. they were teaching us the value of using voltage drop to test for some problems. But most of the time i use a high impedance test lamp, and if i want to be sure of a good power and ground ill use a head lamp bulb.

    I have never heard my fan come on. I think this is the problem with my ML 63 AMG. I get check engine lights during the summer months only. During the winter months I have never had a check engine light. I will look into changing either the relay first then the wiring and the motor. Hopefully, that will resolve the issue of check engine lights throughout the summer months.

    92 500sl cooling (aux) fan issue too. With air on stage 1 works. With air on stage 2 does not work. w/o air on fans do not come on stage 1... 95-100c does not come on at stage 2 107c? 92 does not have diagnostics capability like your video however did a diagnostic via air cond display in car...test mode A.. and noted a 10C different between coolant temp sensor and temp gauge on dash is it possible C sensor is malfunctioning? would that also prevent stage 2 with air on? OR a relay? I am lost

    is there a way to check the fan itself or rebuild it?

    Nice diagnostic lessons to be haved, last 42 yes dealers. and franchise's have been parts changers they would starve or close down but there is a plus gives real techs and honest ones like you guys and a like on YT work and demo your skills that are lacking in this industry which has been deemed rip off's and highway robbers, once a true tech along with mechanical skills costumers will be keepers rather than hopping garage to garage,,
    so those who call themselves Techs but really mechanics need to go back to school and learn how too proper diagnose these problems,
    thanks Keith for a wonderful lesson on how to be a true Tech and not just a mechanic,
    mechanics need to earn there badges by becoming a real Technician not by just a title that some mechanic call themselves,
    but authorized by those schools that provide such opportunities this is the future
    and cars are changing quicker than we can learn about diagnosing future problems
    we have no clue about as just being a mechanic ,and is my point,
    again good show Keith

      jacob USA there are people I've seen out there that think that testing a solenoid is as simple as hearing it click, so I know the type you are referring to. What I can't understand is that with the wealth of ways to teach oneself nowadays that so many choose to use nonsensical methods in order to prove that they know something. I don't even teach a student that says the words "I know " more than once. The best way to learn is to admit that you don't know it all. On a bit of a ramble here ,but point is , take the good testing methods you see and apply them . There are some great guys doing great video like Eric , Ivan , Paul , Triangle, and so many others that each person should have a pen and pad handy at least to write down the titles of their videos and keep it near their toolboxes. I am glad you enjoyed my video and hope you'll like the others to come

      in school one learns the basic and those want to pursue further education the automotive field take advantage what they can learn for free on YT yes eric paul Ivan keith Joe good source of fas diag, and in real time ,in school one gets basics once out in the field now there problems that where never duplicated in class because so many things can cause similar problems which may lead to the real problem source,
      automotive mech that have the basic now they need to get into the real world and finding a good work place that will apply training and begin an apprentiship, I started when 13 in 1972 today its has change 360 degrees we need to give them the chance to excell otherwise they loose interests and just have boxes collecting dust. BuT you guys make more fun even though frustrations at times ,
      every car is a learning experience listen closely and ask questions when you don't now and this will show you're willing learn and then you will get help truly needed

      Great video Keith and the explanation was clear enough that anyone should be able to follow along of what you are doing. I replied to your comment here because I see the same thing with new people at work that I train as new engineers right out of college. It still amazes me how management believes that someone with a degree is the almighty, supreme high intelligent being who knows all. And some of these guys don't even have any common sense and as you've mentioned, they pretty much know everything anyway. And what's more amazing is that there are some sharp guys on UA-cam and the information is there, but people still like to just change parts and couldn't care less of how stuff works. I know it takes a lot of time doing the videos, but it will pay off in the end as I'm sure there's still a lot of folks out there who would like to learn the correct procedure of diagnosing and how systems work. Have a good weekend Keith and don't work too hard.

    Great video, thank you. I’ve a 2001 ML55 and I thought fan needed replacing. Car would overheat because fan not coming on. When I tested fan, it would come on momentarily and then turn off. Both new and old fan did same thing when connected. So could it be the thermostat sensor? Or what else could it be. Interior dashboard light comes on for the radiator on and off all the time. There’s no check engine light. Do you have any ideas please. Thank you for the great videos and for taking the time to respond.

    i have pin hole radiator leak, would this effect my fan? the fan is good but will not cycle on. ive checked fuses and relays changed thermostat ,water pump, hoses a coolant sensor on the motor(but not the one behind the dash yet)before i tear the dash apart could the cooling system not pressurizing properly stop the fan from recognizing the engine temp? the engine stays cool as long as im moving but stop and go traffic or sitting still for a few minutes cause overheating. its a 2000 c280

    Good job, I have an issue with my fan, the car gives " Coolant visit workshop bla bla bla " when it reaches the fan operating time .. or when I run my heater .. confirmed that the fan is working fine, works when the temp goes near 100, works when both AC/Heater on ... ( don't know why it works with the heater but it happens ) .. upon checking the connector ( the harness ) I got 12v+ Red, 12v+ White black, Brown Ground, .. and 00.39 V on the green one ( Suspicious ) .. do you have any idea what is the right voltage for the green one ? .. and where exactly it goes to check from the source ..
    Thanks in advance :)
