You are the man.... You literally saved me $800 bucks. Thats how much they try to tax me. I took of the fan in minutes and about 30 min to open the housing and identify the cold soldering. Now it works perfect. Thanks again much
Your video was absolutely incredible! You should resubmit it and add BMW, Range Rover, etc.. I am very like you in the fact that I think its ridiculous how they try to burn us with these stupid fan designs! I pulled my BMW fan and popped it open...instead of buying the new one for $700 I re-flowed the solder (after testing with multimeter) and BINGO! Fan is fixed! Thank You Sir!
Thank you! You have saved me a lot of time. I was trying to find the plug wiring diagrams online. I thought the green wire might be the PWM SIGNAL, but wasn't sure. You did a fine job, no thanks to Mercedes. I always appreciate ingenuity. Mercedes wiring diagrams are hard to find and virtually indecipherable to anyone not trained by Mercedes.
Charles Madsen, the first thing I tested was the fan itself. That saved me a lot of time. I ran leads from my battery to alligator clips on the fan and....nothing....there you go.
i know im asking the wrong place but does anybody know of a method to get back into an instagram account..? I somehow forgot the login password. I love any tricks you can give me
@Carlos Cedric i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. I see it takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Mercedes used to use a simple relay (maybe a couple) to control the fans. Of course that was too simple, so now it's a signal modulated control. Why? Because they wanted to save power, noise, and make the fan speed more adjustable. As always, great on paper and somewhat commendable, if you give a da*n. As always, the owners have to deal with complicated systems that by nature, have more parts to become out of order. The dealer guys aren't idiots - they're just part of the whole machine to take your money. Gonna watch the rest of the video. Thanks!
Thank you I have the same problem with my CLK 350. Fan works slow with a c, but does not come on to cool the engine. I did get a used one for $45 from a salvage yard and hope to have it replaced today. I will then check to see if I can fix the one that's bad. Thank you again for a very informative video.
Thank you, you save me a lot of money todas.Looking for a fan replacement for Chrysler Grand Voyager,i found your video, same motor so i try to fix It.Hard to cut plastic case, but after open it, can see a bad soldering in the mainboard so i can repare it easily
Similar setup on my ML55, but with a "remote" fan controller, located on the shroud. I was able to use a blow torch (propane) on the backside of the housing/aluminum heatsink, and the whole logic board assembly just basically fell out. I then replaced ALL of the large capacitors, put it all back together w/ silicone sealant, and it has been working perfectly for over a year now. Mentioning this because this info is NOWHERE to be found on the net.
@@krisperkreme6021 I buy all my capacitors from Mouser or Digi-key (ONLY). I am an MB mechanic and a (component level) electronics repair specialist, so the quality is of the utmost importance to me! Glad I'm not the only one keeping their ML55 alive!
@@krisperkreme6021 Any electronic parts store should be able to get any caps or other parts you need, its all super cheap these things. Unfortunately, many have gone out of business in the last couple years so online is the only sources for some and only is a pain in the ass and more expensive if you don't buy in bulk.
@@kliv-ng6uy You can. But if it's already stopped working, then it will probably need more than just capacitors. In other words, find a new controller.
I pulled my fan last night, and Thank You Jesus, the motor and controlling unit is not cased in plastic, they are screwed together. I think my repair job will be much easier than yours. First thing I noticed is that the motor is filthy and grinds when I turn it, either it is burnt up, or just needs to be cleaned badly; that is where I will start.
Top man, my ML w163 has the same issues with the coolant warning light coming on when the ac is turned on. The cost is £380 for a replacement new and 2nd hand on ebay was around £200.
With the help of this video I fixed a Mercedes CLK350 doing this, Thanks. Always look for cold solder joints near High current draw components! I recently fixed a 65 inch TV (power supply) in this manner.
I noticed the joints are very under engineered for the draw. I would rate them at 10 amps at best and Mercedes somehow deems this acceptable for up to 60 amps.
Wow! Was wondering if you could test (hot wire) the motor with it off the car. Could you tell me the conditions when the fan comes on in the car? I have a 2010 W212 E 550. I am sure with temperature and the A/C. Any other conditions? Thanks! The Sailor.
How did you repair it ... I tried to resolder all the pins on board wich i find weak beep on multimeter and nothing no spin when i connect + & - on connector to 12v battery but i have also 3rd small wire pin in connector ...please i need your opinion
THE PROBLEM ITS PEOPLE DRIVING MERCEDES I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM JUST PAY £498 TODAY FOR THE SAME UNIT. WHEN IM DOING 1600 MILES ROUND TRIP CANT TAKE ANY RISKS . IN TOP ITS AROUND 4 HOURS DISMOUNTING AND PUTING NEW UNIT BACK.
Hi I'm trying to separate the fan from the motor like you show at the end of your video but when I took off the 3 torx screws the fan was still stuck on there good didn't wanna damage it could you tell me if it's just a few push clips holding it in or is there more too it thanks
Thanks for this. I replaced my cooling fan with one from another make of vehicle and then sold my Mercedes Benz off. I want a car that doesn't screw up as I live in remote Australia where a breakdown could cost me my life. No one here wants a Mercedes Benz due to this overheating problem. Silly of Mercedes Benz as they then don't sell other consumables for their cars here as no one will trust their lives on them.
very *wise* of you! Same thing is true in Alaska... if your car stalls on the way home, you can freeze under 30mn. What are you driving now... a Toyota ??
Same for many parts of Canada. How do you guys survive without guns?? They are trying to do the same shit here. You break down on the side of the road, a 600lbs wolf can eat your car and everything in it in under 5 minutes.
I got a new fan for $380 CA so I got the old fan to play with. Found a toasted solder joint in that one corner you first pointed at did the rest in case of cold soldier joints. When I connect 12v to the signal, the fan revs up and then slows down as if it shuts off for a few seconds, and repeats continuously. revs, slows, revs, slows. Is that normal without PWM controller or is there is still something wrong here?
About to attempt this. Can you share the video that you used on removing the fan from the car? I found a couple different ones but none for the 2006 C230 Thanks!
Krystal McKinley remove air intake (plastic) hose leading to air filter box, theres a black metal crossmember that splits into 3 sections, unscrew the 10mm screws that hold middle section, 4 screws total dont unscrew the ones for the bonnet locks, and also unscrew the 2 10mm screws that hold the horn bracket, these 2 are quite hidden behind facing the aircon radiator, there is also 2 black circle/square pull/push screws torx30/40 that hold the crossmember to the radiator, now you should be able to move crossmember forwards loosely only 5-10cm not much but enough. unscrew jubilee clip holding top coolant radiator hose and pull from thermostat housing, and bend it all the way right (maybe u dont need to do that, i did i have 646 220 cdi engine). now fun (and worst part), unclip the 2 upper corner plastic catches at both sides holding the fan slide and manoeuvre up and out. reversal of removal.
Mine works on AC and it does rev up at full speed, but it does not turn on (sometimes it does) at high engine temperatures. It often happens when I turn off the engine and turn it on again. Can it be the same problem, or should I search somewhere else? Also, I got a saved (not current) fault code: 0694: M4/7 (Engine and AC electric suction fan with integrated control) : Output stage
Thanks for showing the wrong way to open the unit so I can go the right way without destroying the cap. If you are not good with soldering you can take the motor in your cooking oven at 200 C for 5-6 min just enough the resolder, worked with my logic bord on my Mac computer.
Big question, to use these PWM controlled fans as old style, only positive and negative, or 2 speed mod with 2 relays, not fit a PWM controller 60A from E-bay.

Next time you want to take apart sealed cap, use a heatgun. It does the job without breaking anything.

Hi: When you "click it to this" at 15:41, which wire at the plug is that solder point connected to - the black or green wire? Thanks!
Can’t wait to go this I’m sure I have same problem ! Thank you !
Come to my country an we will do a good business.

This fan motor has 3 Hall sensors as ML270CDI W163 850Watt fan? Not see schematics anywhere.

well done, seems most cars aim for parts swap for plenty of cash now.

Turn on a/c.
How can you bench test this fan?
I bought one today from the salvage yard for $25
Hi, omg can you help me with one. Because here in Mexico city still we spend almost 500 bucks for one.
My doesnt work i tried like you did, it twitch (move but not spin)...CAN ANYONE HELP ME PLEASE 🤪
Can you do the same with C200
Can't hurt to try if it's already broke. Make sure it's the fan and not a fuse
I just bought a OEM fan replacement from Amazon for $225 with AC cabin filter. Not to expensive. Autozone wanted $445.
Good Job Thanks
