- Опубліковано 26 сер 2017
- If your vehicle is overheating due to a non-working cooling fan motor, this video will show the steps involved in diagnosing the problem. Cooling fan motor testing (low and high speeds), relays, harness connectors...it's all here.
Generally, the low speed fan kicks on when the A/C is turned on or when the coolant temperature hits around 200 degrees F. High speed kicks on around 220F.

Excellent video! Big help! However, I wanted to add something to it that I found out in my 72 hour overheating diagnosis. HOPEFULLY, it will save someone else a lot of headache. I spent 3 full days researching what my problem was. 2014 Mustang V6 was operating fine UNTIL I turned on the AC; then it would overheat. I popped the hood and realized that the fan was not running when the engine reached high temp. I tested the fans, relays, fuses per your instructions - everything checked out (SO I THOUGHT). The actual problem was the Fan High Speed relay. It had continuity during testing with 12v and multimeter; but failed under the actual load in the vehicle. SO, I strongly suggest that if you hit a brick wall; swap out the relay with another working relay (in my case it was the relay for the starter). Soon as I swapped it out, the starter was dead; switched back and it was fine. Bought a new relay for $21 with lifetime warranty and I have been good to go! Hope this helps someone!

This is an excellent tip I learned from my old school mechanic neighbor when I was a kid
I tried testing the relay just by switching it with another of the same in my Subaru Outback. Everything was still fine so I figured it wasn't the relay until a couple days later my wipers went out because that's the relay I replaced it with.
What one was it
I have been terrified of my cars overheating issues for years. Your videos are the first ones ever to make sense of it all. I have yet to find my multi meter, but once I do, I will be following your instructions religiously. I appreciate your help more than you may be able to imagine. Fear of things electronic has kept me from trying...and I am otherwise not afraid of much! Thank you so much!
Excellent diagnostic, here ! Clear and simple. 1st, check the fuse ! Also, in a pinch, you can swap the #1 relay with one of the other relays on the same number designation. Swap the two & see if your fan issue is resolved. #1 relay should hold the coolant temp at ~ 190*F, even on a hot day.
In less than 20 minutes, I learned about troubleshooting my car radiator fan. Such an educational video and the presentation was spot on. Great job my friend!
Thank you. Appreciate the feedback.
Well explained with great camera angles. By far one of the best automotive repair videos on UA-cam.
Thank you. Appreciate the feedback.
@CarsNToys so on my 2001 acura mdx, the fans are not turning on and the temperature Guage is reading normal but if I pull the relay out, which I tested and is fine, if I take a test light and connect to ground and touch the test light probe to where the relay plugs in, the low fan turns on. What do you think it could be?
This video has a ChrisFix amount of detail, straight to the point. I like it
Fuck Chris fix! Hate that guy.
@@VGMStudios33 You don't like simple repair videos and wooder?
Ya agreed he's lame
Thank you so much for such detailed information. A lot of videos discuss only one issue assuming that you already know the problem. You have created a step by step instruction to diagnose this issue. Perfect!
Truly helpful video. You cover so much more than other sites, yet in a clear, professional, calm matter. (Thanks for helping us with the electrical wiring diagnostics....) You just earned another regular follower.
Sorry to be offtopic but does someone know a trick to log back into an Instagram account??
I was stupid forgot the login password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me.
@Ronnie Atticus instablaster =)
@Hugo Cristiano thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Hugo Cristiano It did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thanks so much, you saved my ass!
@Ronnie Atticus glad I could help :D
I really appreciate the time you put into this and the methodical way you explain step by step so clearly. I can't wait to get started tomorrow on mine. my Pontiac Montana overheats because the fans don't come on and the connectors to the heater hoses in the back became brittle and finally cracked. I purchased it old but after all the work of putting all those hoses back on, you made this seem like a piece of cake by comparison. Thanks again
Most informative but simple video on this topic that I've found! 👏
You are a Genius MAN...Never seen a video like this before Sir..Thanks
Thanks so very much for the education! I couldn’t think of a better teacher. God Bless you
Very informative and covering all trouble shoots. Thanks and keep it up
I like this guy. I can understand and pay attention to everything and my attention deficit disorder doesn't even bother me.
How do you know
Duh
Excellent job you explained the multimeter operation, I finally get it.
Great video, you explained things so thoroughly and easy to understand. Awesome! Great job and thank you
In older cars you can connect the switch directly to fan/s by using fuse panel so if they don't start (which may happen due to bad thermostat) you can turn them on manually. Hope that this helped someone
One of the best videos addressing this problem. Great job and thanks for your efforts here!
Glad it was helpful!
Very Very Good ! You are very smart ! Very logical and Very Helpful ! You are very good Auto-Professor !

Thank you so much Sir. Just an excellent video tutorial. I am a newbie and absolutely loved your teaching technique with in-depth explanation and visual. I am now your student. Thanks so much again.

I learned so much that could be applied to not only this issue but so much more. You're a life saver for us shade-tree mechanics.
Thank you. Glad to help!
@@CarsNToys if you can show us remote start installation that would awesome, a lot of us would like to know .

Like everyone else said, very informative and very well explained.
Learned a lot. this is what UA-cam is about.
thanks
I like this video. Clearer, simpler and direct to the point.
Hope it helped.
Very comprehensive, step-by-step how-to. This guy is great. I absolutely hate it when other yootoobers post "how-to's" and just point at something something and say, "I took that off, put the new one in, it worked and that's how I did that. Thanks for watching! Ahyuk!"
Thanks, Ruben!
Very comprehensive explanations!
Most helpful description I have ever thank you so much.
There was one little thing, if there is no voltage it is not a shark, it's an open, a short with blow a fuse or cause wires to burn.
It's a tiny issue and it may avoid explnig it.
That said many many thanks, you are the best I have heard at the many hours of searching.
Best wishes

In apresiation I was going to email you a Pina colada from here on the beach ( while watching the topless ladies walking by).
Unfortunately for some odd reason it has been disabled on this planet, work perfectly well on Star Trek 😂
Thank you and best wishes.

Well done!!!!!! thank you very much for the detailed troubleshooting instruction
Thanks for this helpful video👍
Superb presentation. You are a great teacher. Subscribed. Even in cars with a multiple speed Single fan , the low speed function can break early and slowly destroy the ac compressor and then the entire system will have broken parts of the compressor circulating.
I’m so thankful for this video and the time you took explaining everything is great detail!!! Thank you !!!
Excellent video. Thank you very much for this!
He is really explaining very good. Thank you very much

@@CarsNToys With key at ON position, 86 of the C/Fan Relay has 12 volt, and 85 had 1 volt respectively. This relay sits on the engine compartment box.
Now, my issue is that as a test light bulb with its one end connected to 86 and other end to ground, the bulb did not glow. Same case for testing a relay. In both cases, the voltage across each loads is about 3 volt. Why is this happening???
Excellent info. I found the fan resistor was bad and saved me a trip to the shop and an outrageous repair pill, $44 versus $300-$450 shop bill!
Good Job, for this video detailed Explanation.
THANK YOU.
Thanks! the way you explain thing are excellent !
great vid, very helpful, thank you
I've been having a problem with my air conditioning and I been looking at some videos and I did not know that the fan works with the air conditioning but I only have one fan PT Cruiser and your video is so detailed I'm gonna try and check all nam circuits thank you for this good video
I believe that’s what my problem was I just bought this mustang and they had put a new air conditioning in the vehicle as well and they also use this other set up call to Mishi Moto and when I drove the car originally during the day for the first time everything was fine and then when I turn the air-conditioning knob from where it was to the off position is when I had a problem with the car overheating I just got the car today I’m gonna try to switch that setting back to where it was because the way this thing is wired up it should kick on on its own when it gets up to temperature and I noticed when I was driving the car for the second time when this happened temperature gauge really wasn’t going up while I was driving it for the 20 minutes before it overheated
Dude you’re a legend, I am inspired by how accessible you’ve made this, cheers!
Great video! Well done. Thanks!
Dude, you're amazing. Such a straight forward video that even a simpleton like myself can get it; thanks.
On my way out to buy the multimeter.
