My dad was an outboard mechanic, worked out of the garage or did service calls right to peoples docks. At home he had two drums for running motors. One was a 20 or 30 gallon plastic drum with the top cut off. He had a big wheeled dolly and put a board across the bottom to rest the drum on, so you could move it out of the way without draining the drum. For larger outboards he had a plastic oil drum he cut in half. He swore by running them in barrels over muffs because you could gauge how well the water pump was working. With the muffs the water pressure is often enough to make water flow. It's been 8 years since we lost him and I love hearing all these noises again. We constantly had outboards laying around and people dropping off or picking up their boats and motors. It was all completely word of mouth, he didn't even have business cards, yet we had hundreds if not thousands of repairs come through every summer. He was an absolute wizard with motors. This makes me want to fix old outboards for fun now.
Not really. I know its old video but its retared some of the stuff he does like messing with carbs when the motor is on 45 degree angle rather than flat(90) and he seams to do carb last not first. No point in changing the coils if the carb is still an issue. I only saw a few but he does many questionable things in an weird order
Well, I've changed oil in ev'ry major brand of truck and car. Main thing is... You get some ramps. Do it in the morning. And, while it's draining, find summin else to do. I like working on my own stuff. Garages and shops are a rip off. And, they damage your vehicle by schemes and scams. I know I did it right, but you don't know if they did...
Not many honest mechanics like you around anymore. I don’t own a boat yet and I can’t wait till I do. I’m from Melbourne Australia and I love watching and learning from your work. 👍🇦🇺🇺🇸
I learned a lot with helping my Dad as a kid work on stuff like this. Pretty much everything on my outboard has been tinkered by myself and it feels great! Enjoy these and mostly the boat renovations
Great work and greatings from Norway. Love the way you rebuild and restore the outboards with many reliable years of services left in them. And you are doing more for the environment than the self entitled envirolists ever would manage to do.
Hey man I just want to say I love your content! I just moved to northern FLA and I have been watching your channel since you redid that $250 bass boat. I actually picked up an 87' bass champ to see if i could do what you did. I have some more floor work to do to in and find a motor, but after that I'm hitting the water!
Clearly you enjoy what you do. You mention work, don't think for you it's work. Your patience is telling. I don't own a boat or motor yet I enjoy watching your videos.
You have to be one of the best one handed mechanics out there! 😂 Love the vids, and I really look forward to seeing some more of your boat restoration projects.
Best video I’ve seen you do so far! Really like the outboard stuff. If you would do more slowed down how too videos on all this stuff this channel would be fire!
Wow . You know your stuff ! You seem so comfortable/ confident. Always nice to see someone who loves what they do. I can tell you do by the knowledge you have. Good stuff man.
Sees a dirty corroded screw sticking out of the ground, wait a second that’s a perfect Yamaha 25. Just gotta dig it up and turn the majigger it’ll be just like new.
the older ones run great. I'm loading up on fun projects this winter to sell in the spring summer. I plan to restore em well and provide people a solid motor. appreciate the videos

Highly depends on many things, especially how it was treated. they sold alot more OMC motors than Yamaha back in the day, so more chances of ones being out there that were neglected and blamed on the brand
Jake Bucknall, I know how they’re supposed to sound. On my previous boat I had twin 2001 Yamaha Saltwater Series 2 stroke ox66 engines rated at 150 horsepower each. Those ran buttery smooth all the time. Also I’ve seen him fix lots of small outboard engines that ran buttery smooth after all systems were good.
@@benjigans1419 Yes, I don't doubt that, but that model of Merc 25 that was built between 1986 and 2002 that has a 24.4ci displacement and a WMC carb...they run like that. Benji Gans you don’t have to act like you know everything when you don’t, you’re comparing a 150HP motor to a 25HP 😂 I don’t care what you’ve had on your motor the older Mercs always had a grunty idle.
If you don’t know the history of a marine engine, assume that the impeller is bad. Cheap easy insurance to do it yourself every two years. Number one reason for a boat ride cut short is loss of cooling.
Great motors I had a 15 Mercury just like that I had sold it for six hundred bucks that motor ran on my boat for years. Love your videos I live in Orlando FL and work on older outboard motors too ..! Love your videos keep up the great work .👍

nice motors eric! I have a nice nissan mid 90's 5 hp. 2 stroke short shaft im going to be putting a new waterpump in so i can use it as a kicker this summer on Lake Michigan. My older brother gave me a Evinrude 40hp. VRO 2 stroke. And i took off the lower unit today. Much different than my 1995 Johnson 30hp 2 stroke where the shift shaft disconnects. I had to take off the starter motor to access the bolt underneath the engine block as opposed to the Johnson that you disconnect when you take off the screens on the lower unit.
That was interesting. I found the design of all of them very similar. I had 30hp Yamaha that had 3 cylinders and 3 carbs I thought it was unusual to have and extra carb and cylinder for the extra 5 HP but it did have a lot of power for a little motor.
Info for the first mercury: i think you can actually use normal earmuffs, as long as you put the water intake side on the inlet side and probably remove the prop
One thing I have learned over the course of boat/ pwc ownership for 40+ years is that motors can work like a champ on your driveway, not so much in the water under a load.
Thing about a outboard is they all seem to run good out of the water. As soon as you put them in the water (apply back pressure) they run alot different plus those 2 stroke mercs can have bad exhaust cover leaks that leak into the cylinders. Been working on Merc outboards for years as a certified tech and I can say they are awsome engines.
