Running a 200 HP outboard on small 14 ft Jon Boat

- One of the more crazy ideas we have had of running a 200hp 2 stroke outboard on a riveted 14ft john boat.
After much consideration, we have decided to change our name from 407 crew, to Clapped Out Customs. - Авто та транспорт
I'm so thankful that someone finally did this. I've wondered what it would be like for 40 years. Proud of you rapscallions. Looks sketchy as hell!
I can't see anything that would go wrong. Not one thing. 😆
Same here. I guess it was the kid in me or the redneck lol. Soon as I seen the title it reminded me of wanting to do this when I was a kid.
@@79GOLDENBOYCame here to say this. Thanks.

@@79GOLDENBOYyeah exactly. The place where the kayaks are 7litre big blocks and their cars have motorbike engines.
Guy standing at boat ramp......Rapscallion in boat ...hey Mr can you hold my beer....
You won't even believe if i told you how many times i looked up "big motor small boat" over the years on youtube, and i was never fully satisfied. Until today, when i randomly came across this video. This is it!👏
You got some serious balls. On behalf of everyone on UA-cam, thank you for doing this.
I could see doing this in a V Hull but no way I'd try it on a flat bottom! Kudos on your success!
That is the bravest part of it.
I have seen people put 50HP engine on a 14ft v hull and the twisting from the propeller was so bad that you could not run full throttle...
@@a64738My speedboat has a deep V hull and is just under 13 feet with a 40hp outboard, it handles fine on full throttle (in calm conditions.) With anything bigger on the back I’d be more concerned about the tail heavy trim than the propeller torque.
Only fjj look at hull would be a Carolina skiff definitely not a Jon boat. Seriously didn’t think would glitch wright if the 200 merc . Keep experimenting… and keep a friends close by in another boat 🤭🏹
Could you imagine....guys on a lake in his brand new $50k bass boat thinking he's a big dog until he gets passed by this 😂 😂
LoL any current and you'd be swimmin
You are not going to gain too much speed without a good running pad.
Brand new bass boats are over $100k now.
@@NytronX wow!!! I remembered a Nitro brand new at $20k 20 yrs ago....a $100k,that's insane!
@@silverback8183 well yeah the minimum wage was also like 5.25
My brother and I put a 30 horsepower outboard on a ten foot jon boat and we thought that was sketchy. You definitely took it to another level.
a 30 HP motor on a 10 ft flatty IS extremely sketchy!!!
Why is everyone ignoring dudes comically tiny nipples?
I thought a 25 horse two stroke Yamaha on a 14 foot Jon boat was sketchy…
This like takes it a step beyond fast and furious
That’s standard power
This is just literally taking a sledge hammer to hydrodynamics, and that is awesome!
The indifference to any form of common sense is MAGNIFICENT‼️ 👍👍
Love it, new sub!!!
Dude turned a steering outboard to a tiller outboard!! Respect to whoever held your beer while you made this happen!!!😂😂😂😂
I think you need surface drive (Mud-skipper) jon boat (kit) and it would be perfect 😎
It was in his other hand.
Agreed!
Aint no way he put his beer down
Believe it or not there are some V6 mercuries that come OEM with tiller handles and they're short... I would imagine it would take some balls to do.
Activities that clearly explain why men don't live as long........ Suscribed!

I had a 40 hp evinrude on the same size boat and only had the nerve to open it up two times. Your setup is awesome!
We run a 15 hp on our 10 foot John boat. Gets up to 41km
@@sacredtaquito5178 I've once done 3 knots rowing
We put a 26 on a 10 foot, it had a 4.
When you think your cool until this guy shows up 😂
Would strongly recommend getting a 3 blade prop with a lot more pitch it won’t have as much torque but you’ll be able to give it some throttle without flipping backwards and fearing for your life and if your ever able to run wide open which I highly doubt it’ll be a lot faster. You could easily run a 26p or 28p prop on that boat. Also this is FUCKING AWESOME
It’s got some pitch on that prop by the looks! and adding more will likely not drop torque on such a light hull it’ll probably just kick it out harder on less throttle
adding pitch will add torque not reduce it....
Good idea 👍 now let's talk out riggers 🔧

Life long boat lover here! Even had a small engine boat repair business for a time so I can put myself in your shoes somewhat. That being said I was laughing my ass off and scared for my life within the same breath and I’m just watchin! This is great stuff right here!!
i really enjoyed watching this. when i was young i put an 40 hp on a 14 ft sailboat hull that was damaged in a storm. cut the keel and used 2 one inch marine plywood to make the transom. it used to bob up and down and then jump out of the water much like your test did. i tied a rope from the bow that i could hold on to. watching you made me think back to that. thank you for that. can't wait for your next video.
I ran a 9.9 on a 10 ft jonboat many moons ago and had a blast! But 200 on a 14 ft... that's freaking hilarious😂.
Thanks for doing this and sharing the vids. I can't quit laughing 😆
Seen her on marketplace
After a lot of consideration, we are changing the channel name to ‘clapped out customs’. Felt like this better encompasses us.
More like “cracked out customs” lol
or half ass customs.
Wheres this at? Looks like the lakes near Inverness fl
@@lukechenevert3916 no way lol
I like it you , earned a new sub.
I’d just fill the whole boat with flotation foam that way you can at least tow it back when it flips 😂 shocked the boat structure even held up that long.
Great Stuff.
Lived out my fantasy vicariously through your video! I'm not as young and crazy as you anymore. I'm retiring a 140 from a tour boat and was thinking about putting it on a small boat for grins. I don't need to anymore. Will probably just sell it. 😁
I had a 20 hp Merc. On the same exact kind of Jonboat. It threw roostertails at 25 mph. Almost losing control. Diamond Valley lake California. What a ride. Some of the best times of my life.
Would the boats version of a wheelie be called a proppy? That was insane! Could almost feel the rush!
Here in australia we call it tinny slapping
@@dylanzrim3635 i like tinny slapping you guys really have a term for every ill advised action lol

@@dylanzrim3635 I glanced at you comment and thought it said "titty slapping "...
@@dylanzrim3635 what do you guys call pissing into the wind?
Dude I’ve always wanted to see someone slap a massive motor on one of these small Jon boats, this is awesome
Bravo for having the guts to do this extreme radical setup.
You guys answered my question on how big of a motor I can put on a Jon boat. 😂 Good job
Gotta get the prop shaft higher in relation to the bottom of the hull. You drop it deeper and it’s going to porpoise even more. Don’t need a lot of trim either. Not sure of the clearance on that lower unit, but try running a hub less prop; small eared chopper or lightning ET.
Ideally, if you put a 4-6” jack plate on it to get farther behind the transom, that might help with the porpoising and cavitation as well.
Good job wearing a helmet, life jacket, and having a crash boat with you.
Was already up to the limit, do you really think it's going to pan out in any scenario, guess again.
@@danielschiel7001 seriously lol he's giving advice on running a 200 on a Jon boat. What an idiot
All my life I wondered what it would be like to put a 150 or a 200 on a flat bottom aluminum boat! I I think a Jack plate and trim tabs would make it more stable! Also a bilge pump is super simple to install,
bilge pump wont help that rig son....lol
😂😂
Seriously - deck this lil aluminum hull out in ALL the go-fast parts, we must know what its full potential is!!!
That was my uncle. 150 on his aluminium flatbottom. And nothing would touch it. Id say it was realistically just a "fast as you could handle" boat. Wed run in 2" of water in the flats like nothing. Lol
BEELGE PUMP?
WE DOAN NEED NO STEENKEENG BEELGE PUMP!
LOL! Awesome! I have lived on that same lake as well! I have sold and rented many homes on there...but, both of those houses behind you from 5:06 to 5:15, on the left side are still mine. ....That is, if y'all are in MI. . That's a cool video man!
This guy has balls!!! And he is having waaay too much fun. Proud to be an American!
Potential to be one of the best things I’ve seen done with a boat. You’ve got a new subscriber! Send it!
Awesome stuff. I figured the back of the boat wouldn't be able to float from the weight of the big motor but it handled it much better than I expected 👍
Put a 30 horse 1956 Evinrude on a 12ft skimmer what fun
Voted best boat for sure!
So much fun, thoroughly enjoyed the video.
The 200HP on the Jon boat might be the highlight of that groom's married life.
You aren't driving a boat! Just an engine! This is awesome!
HAND SALUTE to you guys! Totally enjoyed watching your journey with this concept.
The home do it yourselfer rigging & design is always interesting.
Be safe! 👍
Thank you for doing this. You made it real
Awesome experimentation. Engineering in action. Keep up the good work!
This was incredible! Huge fan of your work!
Cool. I put a Merc 50 4 cylinder on my 1959 14 ft runabout . It sits up 3 inches and 6 inches back on a Panther tilt unit. The looks I got on the lake were priceless
I was prepared for this to be stupid and funny, but you guys actually did an amazing job. Great video!
As a safety guy I would usually frown on this but let’s take a second to give these boys some props on engineering and their understanding of physics on the water.
Amazing job keeping it upright. Fun to watch.
Hell yeah! This is the type of ingenuity that I like seeing! Badass build man and keep pushing the envelope! 😃👍👍🔥
I could not imagine a better name for a channel putting up content like this😂😂
Content like this is what UA-cam is for!👍👍👍
Thank you for doing this. I've been curious about it for most of my life.
My friends and I done this 30 years ago with a Johnson 88 and 14ft semi V aluminum boat. We raced cars on Sanibel Island Causeway with it. Est speed well over 60mph and thats with 3 of us on that boat. And yes, if we stopped, down it would go! Had to use the fish house lift to keep it from sinking when the fun was done.
That was so awesome. You guys deserve to be awarded “innovators of the decade”. 😂😂
Fantastic engineering, sir.
I have always wanted to do this! Thanks!
Great mechanical knowledge and a true daredevil. Fantastically entertaining! Thank you!!
Too awesome!! Great build, kickass video , and a ton of fun! Exactly what UA-cam is for… subbed ! Cheers guys 👊🏼
I used to daydream about something like a 45 hp or so on a 12 ft John and just imagined it coming nose up out of the water and flipping but you guys took this to an insane level amd made it work so good!!! We fished a small nitro 17ft years ago and thought going from 115 to 150 would be disaster, now im really rethinking that it may have been just fine to do with the right mods!
I Love it. Yall gave me hope in the younger generation. Yall made me A proud American🇺🇸 I Salute you Gentleman..
That was hilarious. Would love to see you guys fish some tournaments out of it. hahaha.
Man I’ve always dreamed of doing something like this. This thing is SICK!
As an 8 year old child this crossed my mind, it has been a long wait of 5 decades but now I finally have the answer, many thanks! 👍🏻
This boat is riding that fine line between anchor and airplane. That's the exciting zone.
Ohhh yes! We've all thought about it. We all knew it would take a real Florida man to get er done. Good job! I can't wait to see the improvements and more ripping! Looking through the channel now and you guys are killing it. Much love from a little ways down I-4 in Lakeland 🖖
This was awesome. I’d love to see y’all do this with a big sailboat. I’ve seen one video of a sailboat with a big outboard and it looked like a ton of fun, especially when you consider those things are generally floating houses.
Most Sailboat top speed sadly limited by hull area :,(
@@shem7974 you’d think that, but I’ve seen a video on the internet that I haven’t been able to find since I saw it of a massive 30 ft sailboat with a 200 outboard on the back towing a tube around a lake, doing a good 25 knots and swerving like they were trying to capsize it.
Yes, hull speed is a thing, but hull speed doesn’t matter when you have so much power you basically force it into planing.

I always say there's a fine line between what could and what should be done..... lmao😅 I've gota say this invention straddles the line! 😅😂 that said it's bloody awesome and I want to see more! 🎉
I built a tiny 4' x 8' small speedboat with a controls tunnel to the motor of 1/4" plywood with glass cloth and resin over that. 2 cylinder Mercury Mark 20 tuned to 12,000 rpm. Passed a sky boat at max at estimated 72 mph on his speedometer on the reservation lake near Reno, NV. Hit a 2/3 submerged beer can at about 85 mph; got to shore at about 35 mph and sk9idded to a stop. That run was intense.
My type of vibes 🤙🏼 this video will take off! Good job guys 👍🏻
Oh chit, and there he is
I once saw someone put cinder blocks in the front of their boat for counterweight, but they didn't secure them at all. Worked fine until they hit a big wave and it flipped the blocks back into their lap.😆
Super ouch
This looked like a lot of fun. Great video.
Nice engineering job, to get it balanced out to sit right! Laughed my behind off when you launched it hard, and about lost it!! About 1/2 the horsepower would still be ridiculously fun! Good job bro!
We need more of this. Best thing I have seen in awhile on UA-cam 😂😂😂
Nice work! This is how I remember my childhood. Small 11ft "Tinny" with too much outboard and positive trim. Look at the Supa Skua videos from Australia for how it's done.
yeah mate I remember Tricky Ricky Gray from Queensland RIP in his 13ft haines with bombed 70horse yammy that was a weapon
Wow has to be a hell of a ride i love seeing people do things like this.
Damn i love multi-cylinder two strokes! I had an old 75 hp 3 cylinder two stroke that I’d run with the garden hose in front of the house just to scare the neighbors. The sound and smell of a two stroke in salt water is the best.
I once had an 18 ft Jon boat with a 115 hp Mariner outboard on it. Had to put an anti cavitation plate on the lower unit to get it to handle right. Had an 18 pitch power prop on it. Bringing it up on plane was instant. No hesitation whatsoever. I was a commercial diver collecting fresh water mussels. Sometimes we would have hundreds of pounds of shells plus all the equipment. Other than being such a gas hog, it was a great piece of equipment.
Have crestliner MV 1872 all welded with a Yamaha 90 two stroke got from a lady after her husband died for $2500 she hated it and wanted gone I love it
My buddy had a 40hp Yamaha with all kinds of stuff done to it on a 12ft monarch aluminum boat. It would run 63-65 with both of us. It was crazy fast. It was almost hard to stay in the boat.
Those Merc ELPTO engines were such great engines for thier time. Especially that 200 with EFI.
In the 70s I put a 25 horse on a 16 foot narrow beam Alumacraft and got on the Colorado River. Once it got up on plane it was pretty smooth running, scary as hell, but smooth.
Brilliant!! Needed to be done.
Funny as it is you guys do have a good understanding of how things work (or don't)
Well done!
Cut the top speed in half ... i would say the opposite of brilliant or possibly foolhardy
im most impressed with the fabrications to the tiller assembly. everything worked beautifully
That was fun. Thanks for the ride..
You guys are literally wanted all over Facebook I have constantly seen you guys posted on Facebook😂 stay safe don’t let them get you
Looks like Bakersfield CA wants them now... fucking dumb go catch criminals.
I came here from Facebook because the police department is looking for him 😂😂😂
Cool test. When u added the weight at the front it got more stable. This is why I think boat builders spec their boats to the motor size. Cuz the misconception Is if you’d take a big motor an drop it on a smaller boat it automatically be faster.
Well of course it'll be fast, but hull TYPE plays probably the BIGGEST part in a hull's abilities!!
Think about all of the little funnel hulls with F1 merc motors on 'em, and then there's always the little Allison hulls and of course the lil Hydrostream's and Lasers etc..
Prop torque at 5:14. My great grandfather used to build engines for rum running boats during prohibition, and that was a common issue with overpowering small boats. The solution he came up with was to reverse the rotation on one engine, which could be done easily with the I8s he preferred.
My old man used to race boats at Misery Bay at Presque Isle State Park on Lake Erie in Erie PA. back in the 1950's .
He ran a 16' wooden Lyman boat cut down to 14' , I "think" they only ran 10 HP motors; but I have photos of him with just the shaft and prop in the water.
Dude I'm gonna follow you for sure. Anyone crazy enough to try this type of shit out I'm watching and telling my fishing buddy's
In the early 2000's I used to fish 5k yards of gill net out of a 14'5 foot Carolina skiff with a 40 hp Mariner and I thought that was sketchy 😂......Flat bottom boats and turning do not mix. Awesome video brother.
Growing up on the obx ...I know where ya coming from..
Any normal person will say you're crazy as men of culture we appreciate you
Nice job. The more you finesse it the more you learn and the more possibility of becoming race boat builders. You could call yourselves Power To Weight Custom Boats. Wish I was young again.

It sure is!
reapers don’t stand a chance now
Bro i saw the police report, lexington police looking for a man witha 200 hp merc on a 14 foot john boat. Now that I see this, this is amazing.
Definitely needs some serious trim tabs and a jack plate. Like you said at the beginning about the motor sitting too low was a concern and it definitely was. The motor was strong enough to lift everything out of the water and then it gets squirley. I think if you had the prop just below the bottom of the hull it would at least help.
I'd love to see you put a steering wheel at the front along with the throttle controls. Would help balance the weight on the boat and be a lot easier to handle.
I came here to see if someone had mentioned this. They could make the throttle and steering arm extra long so their weight in the front of the boat would even it out.
Possibly maybe.
Goodbye spine
badass cuh
Pathetic
Lol Hell That's probably the fastest a little 14' Flat Bottom boat's ever been on water You probably broke a record I'm glad your ok that could have been very bad Great Video man
This is very neat wow
I love how there is just never even any consideration of putting in a sump pump. Lol
Move the gas tank to the bow to better distribute the weight. I used to own a Glastron (ok, my dad did) some 40 years ago, and it had a 20 gallon bow tank. We also had a couple of 5 gallon portable tanks in the stern for backup (easy to run out of gas when cruising around the San Juan Islands).
Cool test! Thanks for sharing
