Would I be correct in presuming that if the local pd fire rescue, etc., has changed to digital trunking radios, with or without encryption, that this feature is not applicable?
Most of the P25 and similar digital systems have an *analog "simulcast"* of the digital transmissions. Not every area has that though. You can use radioreference.com to check your location. My particular area is rural and we do have simulcast. Encryption and/or DMR transmissions however will not be compatible. The P25 capable scanners can be quite pricey. This is just a cheap & easy way to listen to analog. I would assume in decades to come analog may be phased out completely, but for now this is still an available option.
Chirp allows you to set certain channels to not transmit. I’ve been using my UV5R as a scanner for a long time. My GMRS antenna came in today, a Retivis MA-09… Probably won’t get it up until this upcoming weekend coming up, but I checked the SWR and Power with my BTECH 50V2 base station.
CHIRP is a great piece of software. Connecting a Radio to a PC can be intimidating to some. But it does unlock more potential from the radio. Excellent news on the antenna project. I know you're ready to get that off the porch and up in the air!
Great video, you got a new subscriber. Was wondering which specific Baofeng model would you recommend for only scanning, and also what is your best choice for an antenna? All the different Baofeng model numbers are a bit confusing. Thank you
The 5RM is one of my favorites. The UV5RTP is also very good. The best results for scanning would always be an elevated external antenna with a coax jumper between the radio and antenna. However, that adds some complexity with the need to get a cable from inside to outside. And I would say a simple TRAM discone antenna for an outdoor setup would be best. If you didn't want all that hassle, a Nagoya 771 would be certainly adequate for an indoor setup sitting on a shelf. Hope that helps! and thank you so much for the sub!
That SDR Trunk setup is awesome! But that’s a bit more involved than some of the beginners wadding their toes into the radio pond probably want to take on at first. But that is a great piece of software!
Yes that is true. My area made the switch to P25 a few years back, but they have a simulcast on analog. Many places that have transitioned to digital have also setup analog simulcast as well. But sadly not everywhere. Eventually they will be removed. But that's how technology works.
Do they have an *analog simulcast*? Some areas do. My area transitioned to P25 a while back, but also installed a simulcast link to "repeat" the digital traffic over analog. Some do, some do not. There are other avenues for P25. I will most likely do a video on cost-effective P25 scanning when I have a cohesive easy to follow step by step plan.
@@Commodium i would have to look on radio reference and see but worth a try. and after i just looked no there is no simplex anymore. still ty for the video
Yes unfortunately it isn’t like the “old days” however there are many areas like where I am that have VHF simulcast. So even though the main working frequencies are 700/800 P25, they also transmit simultaneously on VHF analog. This is mainly for covering dead spots in rural locations that 700/800 can’t reach, or for interoperability requirements. But not everywhere will have it
@Commodium I know the agency I used to work for went from 800 to 700 and it isn't that great. I looked in my area. Some fire districts and a couple police depts. Not the sheriff
@@veedreen oh im sure, the higher the frequency the more dependent you are on line of sight. The higher frequency does help to a degree in urban areas but does require much closer spacing of trunked repeaters
Hi, thank for this video. We have Anytone 878 it’s on CPS . So does this Chirp work with our Radios? Don’t wanna Mess Up- my - current - settings. We- do- have several ANALOG frequencies programmed 🤔 KE8ZJN
That ending is hilarious 😂

Your channel is gonna blow up. Always good stuff here. Thank you.
I appreciate that!
Im really enjoying yoir videos, keep it up.
Glad you like them!

Thank you for the super simple steps!
Glad it was helpful!
Would love to see how this is done on tidradio h8 and or h3 using the Bluetooth programming with the odmaster app!
Have to look into that and see if we can put a follow-up vid in the pipeline

Thank you for watching! I appreciate all my viewers!
Great radio
Step one: Buy a HackRF or 3 RTL-SDRs
Step two: Set up SDR Trunk software
Step three: Give the baofeng to the neighborhood kid

This is awesome! 🤣🤣🤣
Debuted two new talents....
I don't think there are any channels in my area that the Baofeng will pick up. All digital 800 MHz.
No unfortunately not. However they may have an analog simulcast. Radioreference.com should have that information if avaialble.
There are very few agencies that are still on analog..

this doesnt work for my area as most now use p25 systems

Yea they have a mess there. But I like hearing what's going on in my area.
This only applies to the area that is still on analog not digital and trucked.
Nope, need either a dedicated scanner or SDR for that. But that’s also explained in the video

Im not sure if Chirp supports those yet. I have seen posts asking for the to add it
