UPDATED Video with more details that I did not mention in this video here: • Tips For Using A Baofe...
Yes, you can use your Baofeng UV5R, Baofeng BF-F8HP and other similar Baofeng radios as a scanner to listen to and monitor police, fire, government, railway/trains, local city services, etc.. Step by step instructions to find what frequencies your local police, fire, emergency, rail and trains, government services and other agencies use, how to program the emergency and government frequencies and channels into your Baofeng UV-5R, and how to use the UV5R as a scanner including how to use buttons like the orange VFO/MR button and the blue A/B button. All configuration and programming is done on the keypad of the UV5R - no cable, no software, no computer needed. Note that the Baofeng UV5R can only receive standard analog radio transmissions and many agencies now use digital or trunked P25 systems - but many agencies still use analog radio systems. Many agencies also simulcast their digital radios on analog frequencies that you can listen to - I show you how to find those frequencies and how to put them into your Baofeng so you can use it as a scanner.

Ham radios don't do trunk system scanning, so you won't be hearing any police or fire activity other than the dispatcher. You won't be hearing any cops or firefighters replies or chatter! These vids are feeding people BULLSHEET! 💩 Hitting dislike for being a Liar!

A lot of law and fire are still using freqs in the 450 and 150 Mhz range in my area. Some of them are even using BaoFengs as extra radios and they program frequencies in them that they are unlicensed to use and they talk on them and have conversations they do not want their dispatch to hear and worry about being recorded for later review, especially if there has been an officer-involved shooting or they are watching suspects.

Not a former Marine: Firstly he didn’t capitalize “Marine”, no Marine writes/types/thinks that word in lowercase… ever! Secondly, he wanted to make sure he distanced himself by stating “former” but still expects that it changes the gravity of his opinion. For those of you bashing on his use of former saying ‘once a Marine, always a Marine’, to be fair, using the word ‘former’ is accepted and is used over against the word ex. So cut him some slack there maybe; but smarmy he is for sure. Likely has chili powder in his drawers and woke up irritated.
After serving 22+ years as an Officer of Marines (16 enlisted/6+ as a CWO), a traumatic brain injury ended that chapter of my life. Despite my background in EW, HumInt, and as an Infantry Weapons Officer ranging from Plt to Div communicating, jamming, locating, and tracing comm was part of life all over the world; still I can tell you that there are folks in the radio space here on YT and the www that have forgotten more than I know. People only say things here on line they’d never say to others faces and it’s pretty pathetic.
@thenotarubicon is one of the most interesting guys on YT in the radio space because he does his own thing, fills an important need to the community, and above all is appreciated (IMO) because he doesn’t take himself so darned seriously.

Between 2 cities getting burned to the ground and our Dam threatening to overflow (all with in miles of my house) I looked into it again. The HAM operators around here and on facebook are so rude and un nice Ive decided that these will be scanners and Ill go to the CB radio like I did in my young trucker years 40 years ago. Much nicer helpful crowd. I dont understand why some HAMs want their hobby to die out with them. I joined a thread on Facebook and I am certainly not the only one to notice that and /or comment on it. Too bad . I thought it could be fun. So I thank you my friend for the down to earth non insultive help. I wish you the best.

To be absolutely fair sir, I dont think this just applies to ham radios, so you arent alone. I joined two facebook groups for seperate games that I enjoy, and one more group for go kart, and mini bike building. The amount of times I have been laughed at for my fun and experience (or even lack thereof and admitting it) and/or the sheer anger at simple questions is unwarranted and sadly, all over facebook and many other websites.
Example. I want to make a go kart with an absolutely unconventional gearing system. I know its unconventional and i mentioned that im doing it because i want to, and everyone laughed at me and told me to do a simpler build. But I didnt want to and they got angry when I didnt want to do it their way. People will be stuck in their own ways. To hell with them I say, and let me have my fun.

Concur with devilsatan2973. The biggest problem with Ham radio I’ve encountered since I got my license in ‘91 was the old goats really were/are very opinionated and more cliquey than high school ever was. They HATED the then-new No-Code Tech-Plus class with a passion. When I inquired about getting involved with emergency preparedness, one of the core aspects of the hobby, I was told it’s reserved for a special few members of the club. It totally drove me away from the hobby. It sort of backfired on them later. They learned I had a complete home machine shop and suddenly I had value. Like he said, don’t mind them. You buy the equipment within your budget. You operate legally, courteously, and professionally. The hell with what the old goats say, because you don’t give them the satisfaction.

Suggestion- set VFO A for channel mode, which shows the "name" ir your description.
Set VFO B for frequency mode to show the corresponding frequency.
Then as you scroll VFO A or B you can see the name/description AND frequency simply by setting both VFO's to the same memory location!

GREAT first vid for me to watch on this thing after browsing the manual! 2 Q's:
    1) If while scanning you seem to hit stations that are all static, will they likely remain that way and thus you should delete them?
    2) Is it a good/bad or indifferent idea to leave the radio in the charger while you use it, even if it is already charged?
    Thanks, man!

Thank you for posting this. I just got my UV 5R, got the longer "folding" antenna, along with the bigger battery, and for my car, Dualband Antenna 2meter 70cm Mobile VHF/UHF Ham Radio (137-149, 437-480 Mhz) Mag Mount Magnet Base PL-259 Connector, 10 Ft RG58 Cable. i don't intend to get a HAM license, as i just wanted it to use at my security job in a big city, where the neighborhood is like a demilitarized zone. So i listen to the local police Prep 1, as well as NOAA, and ambulance services. This is a great help for me as i am outside, and i can / have assisted police in apprehending criminals by keeping an eye out for them running. Also lets me know when the locals turn the hood into little Somolia, thus telling me to hunker down as the bullets fly randomly around. Very helpful. As a retired LEO, i know how to use those "law enforcement" types of radios, but this is totally new to me, and you have been a great help. Thank you.
