Another NOOB just getting started by exploring anything ‘HAM’ radios, accessories, DOs and DONT’s and finding it fairly overwhelming. This and a few other videos, yours and others, are gold mines full of nuggets for us. This is perhaps the most complicated part .. got a new radio .. now what. One step, one video, one new piece of information at a time. Thanks for the assist.
So, at 66 I am dipping my toes into HAM radio and starting on the path to getting my Tech license. This video was very easy to follow for someone like me that has never touched a HAM radio before. Many thanks for this video it made programing my new radio painless and the CHIRP program is so much easier than trying to use the radio keypad.
Not to be a butt...but if you were on the path to getting your Tech license, I hope you weren't transmitting using the radio. To transmit on either the 2 meter or 7cm band, you have to have the license first (or least, to "legally" transmit). If all you were doing waslistening, then OK, that is fine.
I'm really impressed with this video, we tend to think everyone knows all the computer shortcut, like "ctrl c" and "ctrl v" and shift click or ctrl click. I love how you explained every small detail, I'm positive the non- computer savvy people really appreciate it. Well done Josh, excellent video as always. 73, KW4LU
I know right. This has been the BEST video I've watched to teach us newbies how to program our radios. Hopefully he can show us how it would work on a Mac. There is also a device I seen that you can plug into your phone and program. Please review that too.
Thank you for this! Especially the hint about turning duplex to "off." So many throw an absolute fit about Baofengs "because they can be set to transmit out of amateur bands." Well, number 1 - just because the machine can do something that breaks the rules doesn't mean it should be held accountable. I wonder how many of these fudds, lids, and sad hams would blame cars for drunk driving fatalities, guns for murders, and spoons for fatness?! No! It is the person using them the wrong way, not the object itself. And just because out of band frequencies can be programmed doesn't mean they shouldn't be. Be responsible! Turn the duplex to "off!" Think back to your tech quiz! YOU are responsible for your station! Same way YOU are responsible for your car! Just because you "are afraid to drive" (aka, use a Baofeng) doesn't mean you get to dictate that I shouldn't be able to use one when I can use it responsibly and not transmit outside my band privileges! Also, remember, it isn't against any rule to listen to anything over the radio! What gets people into trouble is TXing!
The Bao, because of it's useful properties, is great in a SHTF scenario when you can choose from multiple modes of communication. Don't bash the Bao, embrace it.
The same thing can be said for our Second Amendment right just because you have a gun doesn't mean you can handle that gun irresponsible you're the one responsible for the gun not just the gun Common Sense will tell you again doesn't have a mind of its own it's the person that's operating it the same way with our radios we don't go out of band and transmit when we're not license for it we can like you say however listen to it it's okay to do that irresponsible
Absolutely! It's hard to beat a 20 dollar HT. My old UV-5r died; so I just ordered another one so I can back into ham radio. Apparently the current models are limited to TX on the ham bands. But you can jailbreak them for general TX. I like that it requires deliberate effort to TX out of band. Maybe this will keep people from using these for MURS, FRS ETC. But like you said it's the responsibility of the individual not the radio.
Great video...studying for my Tech but wanted to get hands-on listening on my radio. Watched your video...took a lot of the anxiety of trying to program my radio. Pulled in Noaa...FRS and GMRS (duplex off) and local repeaters.....then flashed a second radio with same profile. Super Easy!
Thank you Josh! Study for my T- test now... just received my GMRS license. Just received my WOUXUN KG-UV 9D plus and starting my journey in Amateur Radio in retirement after having a radio on my hip for my whole career. You're amazing teacher THANK YOU SIR! WHISKEY SIERRA ALPHA WHISKEY 777...
This may be the most helpful video in the history of UA-cam. Thank you Josh! Followed your instructions and (with zero chirp experience) programmed my new uv9d mate. Well done!
Thanks for the updated version. There was only one thing I didn’t see it was the FM frequency programming option. Everything else worked the same. Thank you Dad for his service to our country. USAF Vietnam Veteran 🇺🇸
Wow this is what a newbie (like me) needs to get started! I got my Technician license last week and have met with a few club members . One of them suggested just play with your radio and figure it out. Easier said than done. I feel confident after watching your video and downloading CHIRP and playing with it. I have subscribed to your channel and look forward, with confidence, to experience my Ham!
Thanks for the tutorial and I just can't wait to try it myself. I am also pleased to say that the NEW chirp-next macOS version works fine on my M1 MAC MINI! I may never need to go back to my PC again! John WB5KIC
Thank you, Josh. This was one of the most well-presented UA-cam videos I've seen. You made the information clear and easy to understand, particularly for the new ham user. Your sequencing was logical, personal, and surgically on target. You emphasized and repeated as necessary the most important information as you proceeded through the video, keeping the viewer fully engaged in the process being described. You maintained a consistent empathetic register without lapsing into techspeak. An outstanding presentation. Thanks, again, and keep it up.
Just used the new chirp to program some radios for a buddy. Started the video, stopping along the way so I could perform the steps on my computer and it worked like a charm!
I just got my technician license this week and I was watching your older video for everything Baofeng, and was discouraged when chirp didn't act the way you showed. This one cleared up my frustration due to ignorance of the new program.
This video couldn't have come at a better time! I just passed both the technician's and general exams last night, the VECs who ran the test session invited me to join the local amateur radio club and to help out with an upcoming public service event. I've had a Baofeng radii for a couple of months, but I couldn't figure out how to use CHIRP. I just followed your video step-by-step, and YAY! I'm up and running!! I'll be listening on the repeaters until my license is posted in the FCC database, and then I'll be ready to go on the air! THANKS!!
I like the new version of Chirp. I have RT systems on some of my units but Chirp works well. I sometime become the guy that programs the Newbie's HT. I usually set it up so they have all the same repeaters in the same location on the unit as everyone else. Makes it easier to explain what channel to change to. I also like to use it to program by Kenwood TH-F6A. the program Kewnood provides is really out of date for doing that. Always enjoy your videos. 73
WOW, thank you! I just got my tech and General I have not bought a base yet I am saving up for a good setup so I recently purchased a Baofeng UV-5R to practice what I learned from studying . This video was easy to follow I just opened 2 screens and step by step programmed my radio,.Everyone said getting a Ham License would be difficult its not if you read the book and focus. and people online said that CHIRP was complicated you made it easy.KC1UUD 73 :)
I just downloaded chirp next about a weak ago. works great on windows 11. no problems .easy install /replace old version. some GMRS radios not listed . but for the HT's I have it program's great.I have outher software for my outher HT. both work on windows 11 but not run at same time. just what I do, I got the cables for 2 BaoFeng to make repeater. solved the RF overload. small duplexer . works super . GMRS repeater portable . all fit in ammo box . and the roger beep is on. make Randy happy. 73's
One thing I miss with the new version is the ability to import an already existing profile. I do like that I can now filter for both 2 meter and 70cm instead of having to query them separately. I also like the fact I can now query for only repeaters with FM mode and filter out the digital modes. Although I did notice that it may still omit repeaters that you can use analog FM while digital modes are also being used. My club's 70cm repeater is capable of Fusion and WIRES, but you can still transmit using analog FM while someone is transmitting digital.
...what a great video, Josh! ...i use CHIRP exclusively to program my BTECH UV-5x3...hadn't used CHIRP-next yet, but glad i watched this first...this will be SO much easier! ...will pass this video to others...your visuals and explanations were exactly what the "doctor ordered" to remove the confusion and mystery! Thank you so much!!! 73! AJ4D
Thank you, Josh, for this comprehensive video. I got such a lot of questions answered, and learned how to use functions I had not even known they existed. (I even learned there is Orange County in CA AND in FL.) I am German so please excuse my English. You covered every aspects from finding, installing, und using chirp without repeating yourself - not a dull monent in your video. Vy 73, Jürgen
Glad I watched this. Was definitely doing it the hard way. I found the basic csv files but didn't see that repeater book option. Should save a lot of time
Thanks Josh! The time of this video could not be more perfect. I just received my new Baofeng UV82 last night and will be installing Chirp this morning. W9SYI
Thank you for this! Just ordered an AR-5RM and needed some guidance with programming. I once had a Uniden scanner that I could not program or get to work correctly...I believe this was due to a bad sim chip that came with the scanner. Frustrated, I returned the device. Decided to pick up the 5RM for emergencies if/when SHTF, and for listen only. May consider an amateur license at some point. For now I'll enjoy eavesdropping, and this is a great guide to help me get started. Cheers!
Thank you for this video. One issue I encountered that may not have been emphasized enough is that if you do the programming and your radio does not accept programming - check the programming cable plug into the side of the radio and make sure it is plugged in securely as it can be difficult to determine if it is connected properly and this will prevent the radio from accepting programming.
Thank you for making this video because before when I was using chirp it was by the seat of my pants I learned now I have little bit more control and how to make my radio work better thank you again great video
Hey Don. Been seeing you all over the place as I dive head first into radios. Going to start programming tonight. Hope you’re doing well. (I know you from locks before)
Very well done video! Having been around radios and scanners my whole life first working for the fire department and then getting into law enforcement for a total of just shy of 30 years before retiring I know this isn't necessarily rocket science but for some people just getting into these areas that sure helps to see a very well done and easy to understand video like yours. I watched your video because you were dealing with Chirp Next. I have been getting away with the Legacy version of Chirp for several years now but I just bought the new Baofeng AR-5RM as seen on NotaRubicon. As luck would have it Chirp Next will not work on my old laptop, which is 32-bit. Of course Legacy is not updated so none of the newer radios show up in that version. I ordered a new PC which should get here in 2 days and then I will load Chirp Next and be ready to rock and roll. You helped me get an idea of some of the minor differences between the Legacy version and Next. Thanks for the info!
Thank you so very much for this informative video. We offer all new hams a free Boafeng UV5R and do teaching around a table on Tuesday nights. But using this to help new hams learn about all the other things this low cost radio can do via laptop programming is essential to let them experiment on their own too.
Great job Josh! Thanks for sharing this information. I like this new version of CHIRP. I finally took the dive into the Baofeng world and programmed the radio while watching this video.
Great video, I upgraded my previous Chirp to the Next version, works great, I have 3 UV-5R's , I updated each one's settings and memories no problems. I edited the "Display Message" to a unique name so the radio's can be identified when turned on. as well as when downloading the radio's profiles. Have a great day
Great video, as usual. I ordered the 7-in-1 cable you suggested because I have three radios I want to program. I've always used the manual programing method, but I can't stand the pain anymore and will begin using CHIRP. Thanks again.
Thanks for the Video, Josh! FYI Radioddity now has a cable that works with Windows 11and the GT-5R, BaoFeng PC001 FTDI USB Programming Cable. The previous cable was not supported in Win 11 (Baofeng UV-5R Programming Cable), it uses a Prolific 2303 chip that is old technology that MS dropped in Win11. The folks at Radioddity were very helpful and sent me the new cable at no cost and not requiring me to return the old one. I also had a problem with one of the chargers that came with my 2 - GT-5R's and since they had no new chargers in stock sent me another complete radio setup (without a return) to replace the defective charger. You can't beat Radioddity's customer service! I like this little GT-5R, though it needs the 3800mah Batt Pack to feel right in my hand, its too tiny in my hand with its stock 1800mah BP. I've been licensed since '76 and see no need for a different handheld. 73 mike N4ONL
Thank you for this great info and training. Just got my general license, and beyond excited. 1st radio as well, uv-5r. hope to be on the air soon. keep them coming!
I just used this today and was wanting to ask for a video! Man, TBH, I kinda regret updating; there is still a lot of bugs to be worked out. I recommend sticking with the older “legacy” version for at least a couple more months. It was WAY easier to reorganize channels before. Some software errors when changing settings to loaded station lists required redoing download and going back a step. For now, no bueno.
Wow at how Jam Packed this Video Is ON Chrip Bro you rock I didn't even know you could copy or paste let alone Know you could Use RepeaterBook by location and Already listed Records 14:44
Great video thank you. I am a noob .. I didn’t think was ever possible to be able to even accidentally transmit to police or emergency channels. Good thing you mentioned that setting. I always was under the impression we could hear them on scanners and such but their transmit frequencies was somehow protected.
Cool. I've been using CHIRP for several years. Haven't needed to use it lately so didn't know there was a Next. Looks good. I really like the function you used with the NOAA copy and paste where CHIRP does the correction for the legality and then drops it in. Handy when adding freqs you want to monitor. Appreciate the time to show the new features. 73
Great Video Josh!! Something I always do, in case I make an error, is to ALWAYS save the original or last programmed codeplug file. That way you can always go back to the previous program/codeplug if all else fails.
So easy. I bought 2 UV5Rs (one BF and one Greaval from Amazon. (I got the Greaval cuz it came with all the goodies. Both came with a better antenna.) I did one set up on the computer and was able to transfer it to both radios seamlessly. Easy peasy. So good.
A very educational and useful video! But it might be worth mentioning that the software's units are in km where you mention the radius as miles. So theoretically you'd only be getting roughly 31.0686 miles in proximity. 📻😀
Josh, well done! That was easy to follow and you greatly simplified this step for me. I'm now subscribed and have given you a thumbs-up! Thanks for sharing the knowledge!
In years past I had nothing but problems with Prolific 2303 chips since most of the commercially made cables had counterfeit 2303's, and Prolific put out a driver that would not work with them. I used homebrew cables using the CP2102 chips with good success. I did the UV-5R programming on my own and all of my ham club members. Have not done that for some time and recently bought a new commercial cable using the CH340 chip. I had gone through two other laptops in the interim and my latest did not have the right driver, nor could I seem to find a driver for the CP2102. The CH340 cable worked like a charm. No problems at all.
thank you so much! I don't know, if you know but, I couldn't find My Baofeng BF-F8TD in the "model" drop box in the Chirp Radio file. So, I just used UV5R. Someone said the BFF8td, was an upgraded radio. but still a UV5R. it seemed to work. it uploaded my choices in the repeater book. not when I get my FCC Lic. I need to talk and test it all out. that apparently will be the real test if I programmed it right. lol! Thank you for this vid!
Great video! I learned a lot and will learn more from this video in the future. This was my first time working with Chirp of any kind but this one seems pretty easy to use so far. Again thanks for making this so easy to learn.
Great Video. I just updated to Chirp next. I am now working on updating my programing adding/updating the local repeaters ect. Here is a suggestion for a video although it may take a new tool. Plotting the local repeaters on a map or pulling your programmed repeaters into a mapping tool so that you can have a paper map of the repeaters in your radio. Uses would be Cells down or no service, planning a road trip. There are times it would be good to see visually. Since the repeater book filter do appear to be by distance it would be good to have a way to see. I found that if I look each repeater up on the repeater book app the grid square is there the data is available I just do not see a way to export it and then plot it. I do love your content. Thank you 73 Doug KE8OWD
Great video, good for new users. The only thing I don't agree with is turning the volume all the way up. The volume has no effect on programming. If someone is having problems they may waste their time messing with volume control.
Thank you for this video, since Chirp eliminated the “import from data source” option, it was quite difficult for me to achieve this particular task, again, thanks a lot for this video.
Thank you for the walk through… I bought a Boff-Wang (emphasized)… radio for a scanner, and I think Chirp is going to make it a lot easier (especially with being able to disable the PITT function on police channels). Hopefully it works out. It’s sad when a transceiver is cheaper than a receiver for scanning.
I Love your show. How about doing some demos with/on a MAC. I will be trying the 'new" Chirp very soon and loved the info. "73"s. I would love to chat with you sometime "on the air". Have a good one.
From memory, I think there is an alarm function that you really want to turn off. Otherwise, if you hit the wrong button you could accidentally broadcast an annoying noise.
Yeah, the thought of GMRS and NOAA special ops kicking down my door gives me shivers. This is why I am not so fond of my HAM brothers & sisters (mostly brothers) - the pretentious people. That being said, thanks for the tour, very informative!
Adding my thanks but also thanks for flagging up the "CMD-V" etc for us Mac users. I did find another video specifically using macs but yours was more up to date.
OK, just happened to run across your Channel a little qwhile ago and this sounds way eaier than the other way and having to do a lot of searching for things!

Thank you for making this video because before when I was using chirp it was by the seat of my pants I learned now I have little bit more control and how to make my radio work better thank you again great video
This looks good and very easy. You explain it well and will save us ton's of time and anxiety. Thank you. ;)
I’m glad it helped!
Great resource, was able to program my radio with the local repeaters just following along.
I'm completely new at this and have been watching a number of videos on the subject. This is great content. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Perfect timing. Just got new radio and getting ready to program.
Great video. I probably could have figured it out, but between this, the 60 min video and the subscription to radio reference I have a great start.
Great video.... Glad you picked the radio you did as an example as I am ordering one for fathers day. Thanks again 73's
Thank you. Great vid for us new guys that are still scratching our heads. 👍
Wow at how Jam Packed this Video Is ON Chrip Bro you rock I didn't even know you could copy or paste let alone Know you could Use RepeaterBook by location and Already listed Records 14:44
Glad I could help!
Great video thank you. I am a noob .. I didn’t think was ever possible to be able to even accidentally transmit to police or emergency channels. Good thing you mentioned that setting. I always was under the impression we could hear them on scanners and such but their transmit frequencies was somehow protected.
Thanks for the video. I got my old UV5R working better than ever.
This video is underrated, give this man his dues!
I programmed my baofeng a couple weeks ago and had to install the old chirp to get it to work right.
Thanks, you've shown a few more techniques that I wasn't aware of!
Notarubicon Randy will be impressed!
Getting started into the ham radio in a few days (Christmas) and this is so helpful. Thank you!
Easy peasy. So good.
And the programming cable that came with the Greaval actually worked! Woot!
Just bought 2 fengs and have some old wouxuns too. This sounds dope
What an excellent tutorial! Got it done on my local.
Thanks much for your efforts in making it available. 🤠
Yet the FTDI chip cable has existed all since then and has consistently worked.
thank you so much!
ALWAYS great information. Thanks for your time 😀😀
Great Video.
Thank you

Never mind I found it on the repeater book website that is what i get for trusting my phone. (Wait that is why i want a hard copy in the first place)
Thanks! This video made programming my Icom so much easier and saved me a lot of time!✌️
Newbie here thank you for the tutorial it was a big help. I'll be watching more of your videos so I can get a license to use it!
Chirp next also allows printing a paper copy of the file , good video josh
Great job on this video it was awesome to get me started with my new radio. Thank you.
I really appreciate it.
👍👍
That was a great video Josh, well explained!!! You are an asset to Amateur Radio with your videos. Thank you & 73!! KN6STX
Wow, thanks!
Thanks for this video @HamRadioCrashCourse - saved a lot of time in getting up to speed on CHIRP Next!
Glad it helped! You're welcome!
Just wading into the HAM waters and this was very helpful....thanks!
I did not know they changed chirp. Thank you for sharing.
Got it done thanks to your help. I own a Jank 2000 computer, soooo you can guess how it went. Slooooow😅
A great program even better. Well explained, thanks.
This is the best video explaining how this works. Thank you so much
Thank you for the walk through… I bought a Boff-Wang (emphasized)… radio for a scanner, and I think Chirp is going to make it a lot easier (especially with being able to disable the PITT function on police channels).
It’s the same basic process. I don’t think it needs another video.
Thank you very much for taking the time to make this video
thanks!! great info for the first time radio owner/user.
Very nice presentation, Josh. Thanks mucho!
Sorry the joke flew over your head.
Adding my thanks but also thanks for flagging up the "CMD-V" etc for us Mac users. I did find another video specifically using macs but yours was more up to date.
I’m glad it helped!
Man yall guys have really had your finger on my pulse... I just bought a new Feng
Get the Nagoya NA-771 antenna and you’re set. 😎
I actually got CHIRP to work last night. Wish I’d seen this video first though.
I haven't even watched this video yet but I subscribed last month and I'm so glad that I did!!
Very informative, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
OK, just happened to run across your Channel a little qwhile ago and this sounds way eaier than the other way and having to do a lot of searching for things!
Very cool! I'm going to try this out, thanks for the video!
The techy way to run a powershell script or know the UPB VID/PID of your devic to find a com port.
Sweet! Just ordered my gt5r and HAM test prep book!
